Review Highlights
This historic cast iron building is a wonderful backdrop to this chef's vision. His dishes are from locally grown fresh ingredients.
Classic salads are brought up-to-date I had an iceberg wedge with a variation on Russian dressing sprinkled with applewood smoked bacon. The Chef surprised us with a taste of wild mushroom soup and rolls compliements of the house - yummy.
I had their burger which is custom ground meat (sirloin & brisket) on a house made onion bun worth the $16 price tag. My husband had the salmon grilled cheese sandwich and it did not disappoint.
The service was excellent, just looking up got staff attention. There is excellent value here!!!!!
My wife and I held our wedding here, and they did an excellent job for us. Robert Palermo, their Director of Private Dining, is a seasoned pro who took great care of from start to finish. The space was just what we were looking for for our wedding - a classic, urban feel with lots of dark woods, soft lighting, and exposed brick.
Our guests gave rave reviews of the food, and hopefully they weren't just being polite. We served steak au poivre and chicken francese as our main entree choices, and both were hits, the latter especially so with my 4.5-year-old niece, who has quite sophisticated tastes. The star of the meal, however, might actually have been the grilled portobellos. I know, it sounds pretty basic, but these were by far the most tender and well-prepared portobellos either of us had ever tasted - according to Robert, the secret is peeling off the top layer of skin and slicing off the gills on the underside before grilling. Then they're brushed with truffle oil, grilled, seasoned, and drizzled with a sweet balsamic vinegar reduction.
Several days after the wedding, we went back for dinner to sample the fare in a more quiet, relaxed setting, and we weren't disappointed. I had a Delmonico steak that was enormous, perfectly crusted and charred on the outside, and near-raw in the center. My now-wife tried their burger, about which we'd heard a lot of good things, and it was amazing. Made from a blend of short rib and brisket, it was incredibly juicy and flavorful, and also well-charred on the outside, atop a delicious homemade onion bun.
My wife and I move to London to start the next chapter of our lives in three weeks, but we'll be sure to visit City Hall again before we leave, and every time we're back visiting in NYC.

I have waited quite some time to review City Hall Restaurant, much to the dismay & annoyance of both Gia V & Sarita M. I want to say that I've waited this long because I have so much to say, but when isn't that the case, really? So here I am, ready to tell you my love affair with City Hall Restaurant.
Once upon a time in downtown Manhattan, a bride-to-be was desperately seeking a place to get married that would make her guests happy & be true to her taste. Our heroine, yours truly, asked all around for recommendations, only to get names of golf clubs & a myriad of catering halls/hotels in Yonkers, Long Island, & New Jersey... while those places were just fine, I didn't want to get married in them. So I embarked on a mad search through New York Magazine lists from days of lore, in hopes of finding the perfect NYC gem. After many phone calls & emails, most that ended in deep, loud laughs at the price tag of certain venues, I made a list of 3 places, half worried that the list was too short, half satisfied of my detailed vetting process. City Hall Restaurant was at the top of that list.
When Cris M. & I walked into City Hall Restaurant, late on a Wednesday afternoon in August, the air was fresh & crisp, the stone floors & walls were gleaming, aperitivos we're being had at the bar, & the restaurant was abuzz with dapper-looking patrons. The light coming through the large windowed facade was just right & in that very moment, standing by the host, waiting for the special events manager Robert Palermo to arrive, we knew we were in love [pause] with City Hall Restaurant. It had everything we wanted: effortlessly attractive space & old New York feel.
We rented the whole restaurant for our March 1st wedding. We were married downstairs in the Granite Room, a dark & quiet private dining space with a speakeasy-style black walnut bar, wall to wall bare stone, surprising lofty granite ceilings, & a grand piano. Chairs were arranged in rows with flowers, at the end of which stood our padre, my handsome groom, & the pianist. I was next door, in the Rose Room, a delicate & pretty rose-colored private dining room -turned boudoir & waiting room, where I paced back & forth waiting for my mother-in-law to arrive. Cocktail hour was by the bar upstairs, while we, the newlyweds, took some remaining group picture with latecomers. People flowed from space to space so easily, as did the music thanks the wonderful sound system that covers all 2.5 floors.
Now, I know what you're thinking, "Who cares? Tell us about the food"! The menu at City Hall Restaurant is largely seasonal so I had managed to finagle 9 other people to go with me during Restaurant Week in order to try as many things as possible. I wish I could remember what we had, all I remember is dessert (a panna cotta with lemon curd, A-FREAKIN'-MAZING) & the fact that we were all stuffed & very happy! The tasting menu for deciding what to serve at the wedding reception was amazing too. I thought we'd get mini-version of dishes, but no, we got full sizes of anything & everything we asked for, on the house. All this to get to the moment you care about, really: what we actually served.
Here it is:
*Passed Hors D'Oeuvres: Roast Beef Mini Sandwich with Horseradish & Arugula, Vegetable Summer Rolls, Crab Cakes with Spicy Remoulade
*Appetizers: Grilled Portobello with Arugula & Shaved Parmesan, Field Green Salad
*Main Courses: Broiled Atlantic Salmon Steak with Béarnaise, Roasted Long Island Duckling With Dried Cherry Sauce, Steak au Poivre
*Sides: Roasted Rosemary Potatoes with Caramelized Onions
I want you to know that everyone fell over themselves with the deliciousness of their meals. Dessert had 2 parts: a Croquembouche courtesy of Balthazar's & a Dominican Cake courtesy of some old lady in Inwood (I still wish I had gone with Cris M to pick out the groom's cake, it was tasty but not very attractive - dessert reviews, along with flowers, DJ, etc will come at a later date).
After being fully stuffed, we danced the night away as it started to snow & sipped champagne all evening long. It was a truly magical evening. City Hall Restaurant was the perfect place for us. Everything was exquisite from location, to service, to food & drink, to planning & crisis control. What more could a girl ask for?
Before I finish this review, I must say a few words about Robert Palermo, the Private Dining Director: he was THE best at everything, from beginning to end, where our wedding was concerned. He answered all questions patiently & with a smile the first day we met, & everyday thereafter. He was incredibly accommodating in absolutely every way (change of wedding date, no solid head count until the very last minute, no seating plan, to name a few). He EVEN dealt with my mother with ease, grace & humor. Last but not least, on my wedding day, he came to find me during each course, to make sure I ate, & I will be eternally grateful for it!!!

Burger, Fries and Brownies!
the City Hall burger features the Pat LaFrieda blend of brisket and short rib and it makes for an extremely flavorful, juicy burger (which also explains the high price point but trust me it's worth it!).
i had my burger with bleu cheese and bacon, particularly because as the bleu cheese melts, it makes somewhat of a cream sauce on top of the burger, which i love.
my burger was cooked perfectly (medium well) and it was served on a homemade onion roll with fresh cut french fries, perfectly seasoned with salt and paprika. the burger itself tastes like it is charred, which i didn't expect so it was crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside.
the fries were addicting and despite being overly stuffed, i continued to eat them because they were that good - especially when you're dipping them in mayonnaise.
now on to dessert - the $8 triple chuck macadamia nut brownie. this brownie, is hands down THE BEST BROWNIE I'VE EVER EATEN IN MY LIFE! not just one of the best but "THE BEST!" and i needed to capitalize this because the next day my friend also agreed - and neither of us are big fans of brownies primarily because they are always too heavy - and she said the same thing, that it was the best brownie she's ever eaten and she'd go back just for the brownie if she wasn't in the mood for a burger.
so let me describe this brownie, it's filled with macadamia nuts, it's rich and sweet but is very light and not dense, which i really appreciated. and the bottom had almost a sugar coating that made it crunchy. City Hall is truly brownie perfection and was a great way to end the delicious burger and fries experience.
so if you love burgers, fries and / or brownies - head to City Hall asap!
and if you do go and order the burger, check out this coupon for a free macadamia nut brownie courtesy of Burger of the Month Club - though if you don't have the coupon, the brownie is worth $8 - it's that good!

Four of us went to City Hall based on the review from Burger of the Month club (#3 burger in NYC). We didn't realize how fancy it was (the OpenTable reservation should have clued us in) so that colored our review. I thought it was really good, perhaps not worth $16 but considering the atmosphere it's probably about right. I ordered rare and it came medium/medium well, but it was still pretty juicy. Friend said it was too greasy/juicy for her (she likes her buns to stay dry & toasty). Fries came with the burger and they were super good. The onion rings are shoestring style, which I personally don't like.
Not sure if I'd go back again, even though it was a tasty burger. If you do go, go to BOTM's website to download the coupon for a free brownie if you order the burger.
This section of Duane street has one bright spot and that is City Hall, the building practically sticks out, especially in the evening, with it's lighter colors to contrast the surrounding dinginess. City Hall is participating in Restaurant Week and this was high on my list of places to explore.
The inside is even more impressive and inviting. The coat check was unexpected, yet welcomed. I rather liked that the bar area had doors to block out the cold coming in from the foyer. The bar itself was pretty packed so I sat in one at one of the smaller tables with the comfortable seats.
As I mentioned Restaurant Week is happening, so I went with the Prix fixe which consisted of the Maryland lump crab cake, cabernet braised short ribs and coconut bread pudding with vanilla ice cream and a pineapple slice. Everything was very good, though the crab cakes were my overall favorite.
If you're a wi-fi person, unfortunately they do not have a connection at this time. The maitre'd did mention that they are working on getting that corrected.

Met a friend here for lunch around 1pm on a Thursday and we were seated right away without a reservation. The host that day was a super friendly guy, well dressed, and just geniunely nice. He even offered us a choice of seating!
The waitress likewise was a super friendly young woman (am I in New York City?). I'm not knocking NYC waiters, it's just that these two people were unusually friendly which was so refreshing.
Unfortunately the food did not match up to the service. I was disappointed because the menu selections looked so good and the specials sounded deelish. I ordered the matzo ball chicken soup which was okay but nothing special. For my main course I ordered a speical that day which as a sliced steak sandwich with field greens. The steak was seasoned with cumin or some Mediterranean spice and I wasn't expecting that. The texture of the meat was weird and not what you would expect when you order a steak sandwich. The bread was so soggy that it was unappetizing. Fortunately, my friend and I shard a side of frieds and those were fine.
I really wanted the food to be good because the menu looked so good and the service was so friendly. Maybe I'll give it another try and order a burger. I noticed that's what everyone else seemed to be eating as I left the restaurant.

So everyone probably comes here for dinner but I LOVE it for brunch. $13 gets you a hearty eggs benedict with canadian ham yum. All the other menu options are delicious as well. It's pretty reasonably priced considering how nice the restaurant is. If you stay away from the cocktails, you'll get away with a reasonable brunch. WARNING: Stay AWAY from the cocktatils to keep your bill from hurting.....seriously....speaking from experience here.
I also love the space. It's a huge restaurant with beautiful leather seating and abundant space to really throw your elbows and knees out. I could, and probably would have laid down on my side of the booth except for that damn thing called common decency.
Country club space for very reasonable brunch prices in this city. A real brunch treat!

And its nearer a 2 1/2 star. Just not very impressing - includes decor, service and food. You know Odean has smilar fare and prices, but is full and so much the preferred choice. Apparently Bloomberg was there last week - why Mr Mayor?! Not going back.

Ambiance: I liked the lively, wide-open space that is richly decorated and is aesthetically pleasing. I also liked the decision to fuse old-world photographs with modern, chic furnishings.
Coat check: I wouldn't normally have a separate category for coat check, but something unique happened at the restaurant. While my gf and I were waiting to be seated (we didn't have a lunch reservation), the coat check lady certainly seemed fond of my girlfriend. She told my girlfriend how much she liked her coat, dress and overall looks, ha. The way she was fawning over her, i wouldn't have been surprised if she had slipped a card with her number into her coat pocket. Naturally, I didn't mind because her comments were playful and we were all having a good time.
Waiter service: Soon after we were seated by the host, our waiter arrived and asked us if we wanted anything to drink. After we ordered two lemonades, the waiter promptly brought us our drinks. When he brought them, I ordered the steak salad while I do not recall what my girlfriend ordered. We didn't have to wait long for our dishes and a couple of times throughout our visit, the waiter came to our table and asked how we were doing. Overall, the service was quite good and personable.
Food: While the steak was somewhat flavorful and the salad dressing was okay, I didn't really care for the dish that much. Frankly, it pales in comparison to the sliced sirloin steak I had at Macao Trading Company. There were too few steak slices, and the slices themselves were too thin. I just feel that at a $$$$ restaurant, patrons would get a bigger sized lunch dish. While I do not recall what my girlfriend had, I do recall that she didn't think that it was too great.
Overall: While I definitely liked the restaurant's decor and our waiter's professionalism, I didn't particularly like the dishes I tried. In the end, the quality of the food is the most important in my book. Obviously, when I go back a second time for dinner, I certainly could have a dramatically different opinion of this establishment.
P.S. I would have given the restaurant 2 1/2 stars if that option were available. And, if the coat room lady would have walked-out with us, my rating of the establishment would have increased to four stars, ha.

Some of the options on the menu are really good and others are just okay. Been here a few times but the stuff I remember the most was the Chicken Milanese and their Sangria! Yum. I once tried their ice creams and they are pretty terrible. Tasted very artificial, too sweet, and there was freezer burn on it. They do have other good dessert options, so just avoid the ice cream. This place comes with a hefty price tag and people look at you funny if you're not dressed properly so come prepared! Overall, the service was good and they have very nice seating outside. Oh! And I hear the brunch menu is good so I think I'll give it another shot... It does get very crowded during lunch hour on the weekdays though.
Best burger. The burger here is really a work of art. We started out at the bar for some drinks. They have an interesting selection of draft beers. The resteraunt is pretty nice. It was a little fancier than expected, but the decor really adds to the feel. I had the burger with bacon and cheese. We had 6 guys, we all ordered bacon, and they forgot the bacon, but soon arrived with a heaping platter of bacon for us. The onion bun really suited the burger and it was extremely juicy and flavorfull. I am anxious to go back. The fries are great and all the condiments were fresh. Highly recomended.

ATTN! http://www.Restaurant.com
that being said, it's nice here. a bit fancy. i've only been for Resto week lunch since it's near my work. I always covet the tower of raw bar when I see someone who has it. Maybe next time.
usually there is something traditional and safe and some things that are more interesting ingrdient-wise. I had watermelon-mint chilld soup in the summer. some kind of polenta last time. and i think we got complimentary bellinis one resto week. nothing wrong with that!
City Hall (homemade ice cream) [Taste of TriBeCa] - I had 3 flavors, white peach, a variation of vanilla, and a variation of chocolate, the white peach stood out to me most, else just OK
It was really difficult to decide between a 3 or 4 star rating for City Hall, but 4 stars it is for excellent white glove service and space. I often think of this place as the older, more seasoned brother to the Bull and the Bear (although I have no idea which came first). The scene is either power-lunch/dinner or the pseudotrendy except they actually eat. It's not uncommon to see a politician or celebrity when dining here, but they're the least interesting part of the experience.
I love this space. It's got a bit of English parlor charm mixed in with Greek architectural grandeur, but these descriptions speak more to ambiance than the actual aesthetics of the space. Even if you're not thrilled with the food, you can't deny that you're sitting comfortably, leisurely (short e please), and feel like you should have a cigar hanging out of your mouth post-meal, looking at your pocketwatch, and talking about the days of yore or some such nonsense. Yet still not really pretentious... confusing, I know.
The food is great, but nothing that wows. It's three stars all around. The quality of the meats and seafood are all excellent, but the flavours just don't do it for me. Nor is the preparation particularly inventive. Compared to other steakhouses in the city, it's not a real contender. However, if you happen to be in the hood and looking for a non-trendy restaurant that serves more than the chi-chi mini portions, it's a good option.
All in all, for that kind of price tag, it's not my first choice, but it's a damn comfortable place to park your bum and have a nice meal.

burger is ok
I was excited for the idea of ground brisket and short rib
meat seemed old, it was brown and greyish
temperature was correct
bun did not blow me away
overall ranking: B
Went here a few years back on a 4-5 day NY trip. Since it's a steak house, I of course had the steak! We were told they were known for their "DRY-AGED PRIME NEBRASKA BEEF" was the way to go. I ordered up the CITY HALL DELMONICO. It was a very good steak... worthy of a comeback. The sides were outstanding as well. Great ambiance, and as all things in NY are... very expensive :-)
We were headed to the crab feast at the Hideaway, but when we walked in at ten past 8, we were told that they were out of crabs.
HEARTBREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Until we looked at each other and Peter whipped out the cell phone and called over to City Hall to see if they could seat us ASAP. I had never been there, but walked by it a lot, and Peter used to go there quite a bit, and loves it.
There is a lovely outdoor seating area, and indoors is sophisticated and elegant with Moderne/Deco/Mission elements with gorgeous dark woods, buttery supple leather banquettes, slate countertops and money, money, money in the details. The raw bar is beautiful, and the high ceilings and perfectly spot-on lighting created a dramatic space where large groups and small duos can all feel at home. The bar area was just plain elegant--the kind of place where ordering a Sidecar would seem perfectly appropriate.
The menu was streamlined, as befitting the Moderne motif, consisting of simply prepared steaks, seafood and sides. Warm rolls and a crudite platter with sliced raw fennel--a favorite of mine--radishes, carrots, celery, olives (pitted for us!), pickled tomatoes and pickle, pickles came quickly. Peter ordered the raw seafood tower for one or two--the Chrysler, with crawfish, scallops, oysters, clams, king crab, mussels, lobster and more. I ordered the Delmonico steak and a side of creamed spinach. Seasoned perfectly with nutmeg, the spinach was a sophisticated complement to the charred, crusty steak delivered medium rare as requested. Topped with a pat of gorgenzola butter, this steak was easily one of the best I have had in Manhattan. Peter also had a Bunnehaben 12 y.o. OB with dinner, and it went better with my steak than it did with his seafood tower, so I enjoyed it as well.
Dessert offerings this evening included a peach cobbler pie a la mode. You didn't have to ask me twice, even though there was also red velvet cake on there. Next time. The pie was great, although I had to ask them to warm it up more so that the ice cream could melt.
Service was professional, warm and swift, with many people at hand to fill water glasses, wipe crumbs, fold napkins and clear. Overall, a lovely evening, with excellent music choices, stellar food and a top-notch staff. I would certainly come back, on my dime or someone else's. I would consider holding a birthday or engagement party here...it's that lovely.

Into the great wide-open...
THE UP-SIDE: Big, open space with a clean, sophisticated feel. Service was attentive and the meal was delicious. Good place for a business lunch.
THE DOWN-SIDE: Felt too big and impersonal to ever warm up to. However, it does "fit" the area and the business-types that frequent there.
THE SUM-IT-UP: Not my favorite place in NYC, but a nice, classy place with good food.

Great little restaurant with a nice sidewalk patio area. The oysters were fantastic. My filet mignon was perfectly cooked. The monkfish was also delicious. They have a nice selection of wine. The service is attentive and yet not smothering.
Oh, and the bathrooms? The upstairs bathrooms look like they'd be a perfect place to "powder your nose", if you were so inclined. I'm not encouraging it, I'm just saying that it looks like that's what the designer had in mind.

I LOVE this place for lunch. The only time I went to City Hall for dinner I felt like the wait staff was upset I didn't get a drink. Instead of asking me how the meal was going they would walk up every 10 minutes to suggest a drink menu or to see if I changed my mind about having a drink. -The place was more than half empty so i didn't see why the pressure to sell alcohol to my table of 2 was so heavy but at least the food never disappoints me!
For dinner I had the surf meets turf + crab cakes which was good!
And for lunch I never break away from the colossal tiger prawns + basmati rice---A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! The desserts are good too!!
Nice big space that's rarely crowded. Good steaks and an absolutely delicious burger that makes it perfect for an evening when you don't feel like fighting the crowds around the corner at Odeon, Landmarc, etc. For some reason I really dig the pickled vegetable dish they set out on the table when you sit down, makes a nice change of pace from the usual bread and butter setup.
Occasionally you'll have to deal with a rowdy group of financial types celebrating but they're harmless and tend to go to bed early so you shouldn't have that issue if you go later.
Oh, there's also a few tables for outdoor seating that are nicely from the sidewalk by wood planters so that's a nice bonus.

City Hall is perfect for an after work Christmas dinner. It's loud enough that you don't feel awkward and quiet enough that you can have a real conversation. The hangar steak was cooked to perfection, juicy and bursting with flavor. They also have an abundant list of sides, my favorites include the calamari, the creamed spinach, the smashed potatos, and the grilled portobello mushrooms.
If you like seafood, you should get the Highrise of Shellfish, every thing you can imagine on top of a bucket of ice. Share it with 4 - 8 friends.

Perhaps the most under-rated steakhouse in all of Manhattan, City Hall is terrific. Great design which evokes the spirit and achievement of downtown, efficient, knowledgeable servers and decent prices plus deeply succulent Filet Mignon makes this restaurant a don't miss. Highly recommended.

Attentive service, great food, and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. I'll definitely dine here again.
we went there 2 times, both with kids. the first time is a bit quiet, the food was good and the service was not great but acceptable. the second time was on halloween, it was packed and the waiter service was terrible. we had a group of 7 and 4 of them is kids, so the waiter knew for sure the tips will be 18% in her pocket, why gave us the service? we were not ask for extra but just min. service like we asked for bread, as if we were ask for a favor and gave us the look. in my opinion, this over 6 people (some restaurant is 5) compulsory tips system is a big step backward. it totally ruin the good experience that we had with this restaurant.

You just can't fight the urge to scope out your neighbors -- they could be high powered attorneys or even the mayor himself-- at this TriBeCa favorite. Take it from me: The steak is amazing as is the seafood. Wash it down with one of their many top quality wines or, even better, a dirty martini. The leather and wood decor may come off a bit masculine, but take it from me, this place should also be a ladies' choice.

I've been to City Hall several times and whilst there are steak houses of equal quality in NYC - the service at City Hall cannot be beaten! My meal has *always* been cooked perfect first time, every time. Nice decor, unique sides (try the curried onion rings!) and fantastic staff!
This place is a steak house. It looks like a steak house with sleak wood and dark colors. The people there are often 30s and above, in suits eating steak. It's a really good steak, but not too much else to say. Good stand by!
I've been a repeat customer for many years. This restaurant combines "mature" service, with an outstanding raw bar, wine list, and top-notch entrees; nothing experimental, but always tasty. Best for expense accounts. Support what is probably the best restaurant in NYC south of Canal.
3 stars is actually being kind of generous. was here on a sat night with a fairly latge (10) group of young (25-35) professionals. the service we received was so bad it bordered on comedy. really, i expect this kind of service when you are being a loud traveler in a foreign country wearing an american flag t-shirt. 1st, we were given 1 type of (very limited) menu, when someone in the group noticed other tables had a different, larger version. strange, right? then the waiter kept prompted us - addressing different customers - kind of like asking mom for something after dad already said no. he strongly suggested we get the raw seafood starter (2 of course) with the lobster as it was a specialty of the house riiiiiiigggggghttt.... i thought this was a steakhouse. maybe cause each of those starters are like 50$? this prompted and cajoling to order more, and $$ items was pathetic and took away from what could be a nice place. as other reviewers note, the food is pretty good - i ended up having scallops w/ sweet potatoes and spinach nice if a little pricey. oh, also the restaurant was ridicuously hot as in too much heat we asked the service if they could do anything about it - but nope no dice.
so i would give it another shot on someone else's dime or perhaps after a long cooling off period.

i'm a little conflicted by this place. i love the raw bar that has oysters, clams and such, absolutely delicious. but the steak? i didn't think it was that great... felt as though i could make it better at home. i also tried the scallops with sweet potato puree and that was good, i think better than the steak. but city hall is beautiful on the outside and on the inside. i've only been there once so maybe it's just the time i went that i was not really impressed. *shrugs*

Did a Resto Week lunch here. It was pretty good, nothing to like, write home about. Maybe a steak dinner would be better but I'm not sure I want to invest in it.
