Boston, MA
The best kind of place. City Girl is small and unassuming, reasonably priced and most importantly, delicious. The menu is small but packed with essentials--homemade meatball panini, chicken and broccoli ziti, a variety of really good salads and a few soups--all made fresh and with care. It's not adventurous cooking but any stretch, but its a guaranteed good meal.
Tucked in an extremely cozy space right next to Ryles in Inman Square, you could be forgiven for walking right by the place. It can seat just about 10 tables (parties of two or three), which means both that there could be a wait (Sunday morning brunch hours especially) but also that the food is quick and service attentive.
A few tips:
- Amongst Inman Square's potent variety of brunch options, City Girl is one of the best. Everything is 9.50 or less, and there are some amazing choices like the goat cheese, carmelized onion and bacon & egg sandwich with red bliss potato home fries. Amazing.
- Lemon-caper tuna panini on baugette
- Broccoli chicken and penne lunch pasta
- Go often. And a lot. -

When my friends and I are looking for some affordable comfort food, usually we head over to City Girl. The place is small, so sometimes you have to wait for a table to open up, but it's well worth the wait.
I've tried a good number of items on the menu, and my favorites are the fettuccine with meatballs, the fettuccine with proscuitto + peas, the basilico pizza and the spinach and arugula salad. Their rotating specials have never disappointed either. Most of these dishes will only set you back $12, and I've never been able to finish the portions in one sitting.
The sangria is sort of random for the menu, but really delicious too (and for only $6.50 a glass).
I've never been here for brunch, but I hear that it's incredible and any time I drive by on the weekend I see crazy lines outside. They must be doing something right if they consistently drive hipsters out of bed at 10am.
On a final note - the waitstaff is awesome. They're really accommodating and attentive, even when the place is jam packed. I'm a huge fan of City Girl and recommend it to anyone who digs Italian cuisine and is in the mood for a funky yet cozy atmosphere. -

I came here to meet a friend for brunch. When I arrived, I told the host I needed a table for two, and she pointed to an empty one and said we could actually sit right away. However, my friend wasn't there yet, so she said she couldn't seat me until we were both there. This was fine with me-- it's a tiny place so obviously they can't always be waiting for large groups to assemble themselves while taking up valuable table space. So I stood outside waiting for a while as other groups arrived and sat, feeling the rumbles in my stomach grow ever more insistent.
After a while, my friend was still battling the MBTA and nowhere to be found. I guess the host took pity on me, because she ended up letting me sit anyway the next time a two-top opened up. Totally nice and unexpected!
As for the food-- SO good, and surprisingly cheap for what you get! I had the Il Meglio, but minus the prosciutto. The waitress volunteered to add a veggie item in its stead, and I agreed. I ended up with sauteed baby bella mushrooms, which I think was a great substitute.
Coffee was quite good for a breakfast place, and plentiful. The decor is cool, the staff are cool, this place is just generally pretty great. -

This is the place you see in the movies - you know, when the couple is walking down the street and walks into a classic little Italian place - with only a handful of tables and so much character that it doesn't seem real!
I'd recommend going here on a Saturday afternoon - it can be snowing outside - or even just a nice fall day would set the stage. Get a bottle of wine. Relax, have a few bites, spend some time, and enjoy! -

We went for brunch on Sunday. The staff was very busy and efficient. The food was good. I liked my goat cheese bruschetta but my soup was making me very thirsty. I think that it had much to much salt in it. Good thing that the Rosemary lemonade was so delicious.
Attention, smoke alert: we noticed at home that our hair n clothes smelled all very smokey after going straight home from City Girl Cafe. We suspect that it came from the fumes from the kitchen that must have saturated the air in the whole restaurant. -

Pretty solid reasonably priced food in a small setting.
I had an goat cheese egg sandwich situation and hash browns for brunch which was simple but delicious.
Super small space that is pretty eclectic. The staff was quick and super polite.
I would probably come back if I were in the area. -
Review from Kelsey C.
When you first enter City Girl Cafe, the first question you will ask will be: Is City Girl full because it's good or because not that many people actually fit inside? My question was answered after a mere 15-minute wait for a table. My first taste of City Girl Cafe was the Rosemary Lemonade. With just enough sugar to take away the eyebrow-wrinkling sting and a lingering taste of rosemary, this concoction is probably the best legal herbal remedy to stimulate your appetite and prevent the common cold.
The French Toast soaked all the flavor of the vanilla custard and anise without becoming soggy, and the red bliss potatoes were as blissful as their name!
Green means go and the Verde was no exception. Clever use of basil to remind you of the Italian theme, and the two slices of Italian bread are where all carbs go to heaven.
Bottom line: There's a lot of good cafes in this city, but there should be more city girls in this café! -

CP: Everything is really good here. The pizza is awesome. Salad's are fresh and well seasoned. It's a really tiny, cozy space, so the wait can be long sometimes but, the food really delivers. It's worth the wait. Brunch here is my favorite in Cambridge. Again, small space but, the food is really worth it. You can help yourself to a cup of coffee after you put your name in with the host while you wait. Not recommended for large parties, or super cold days as the wait is on the sidewalk out front...
Marzipan: Oh, City Girl Cafe, I nearly froze my feet off the last time I was waiting for an hour for a table for brunch, BUT it was so delicious, next time I will wear boots. You make me wish I could still eat wheat because you have THE BEST pasta. Also, rosemary lemonade? Delicious. And that one time I was there for Saturday brunch and found myself dead smack in the middle of the best '90s dance party - serious win. -

My friends Jodi, Lori, and I were staying nearby City Girl Cafe on our trip to Boston. We were definitely attracted to the place due to reviews and the proximity to Christina's.
Like the eager beavers we were, we arrived at a quarter til opening for brunch, 9:45. The smell wafting out of the cafe was buttery, herby, and we were trying to keep our drool at bay. We were totally excited, as well as starving, although we felt sorta creepy for stalking out the joint like that. However, they duly opened their doors at 10 and we were seated immediately along with another party that had joined us in waiting for them to open.
The three of us each ordered different items:
Lori: the Verde - scrambled eggs with pesto, spinach, and tomatoes.
Jodi: Goat cheese, bacon, and caramelized onion egg sandwich
Lily (me): Vanilla-anise custard french bread french toast.
All each came with a side of roasted potatoes. (yum). Lastly, we discovered that the buttery smell we had encountered while waiting for CGC to open was their asiago biscuits. The three of us each ordered a side of the biscuit with gravy....imeanhowcouldwenot?
The sandwich and the verde were DELICIOUS. However, although I enjoyed the flavor of the french toast, the bread choice was just too tough and chewy for me. I personally did not enjoy how I had to saw through each slice to get a bite of it.
And then there were the asiago biscuits with sausage gravy, AKA crack biscuits with crack sauce. AMAZING. We each did not leave any of that intact. Man..those biscuits...
There were only 9 tables in the cafe, and every seat was taken within 15 minutes. Crazy! However, the service was fantastic, the decor adorable, the food fairly yummy (sans the hardness of the french toast)...AND THOSE BISCUITS...!
Excuse me, I have to wrap up this review to find a napkin for my drool.... -

Came here for brunch with sis+cousin on a Sunday and it was crowded. Had to wait around 30-40 minutes outside which was okay since today was pretty - but it might not be that great in the winter.
We had
asiago biscuits+sausage gravy
-hot, delicious
** chunks of sausage in the generous portion of gravy
** the soft scrambled eggs were the soft-scrambled eggs I've ever had! Normally they can get runny or mushy, but this was gentle, wavy, and delicious.
Monte Cristo
-sweet and savory
-came with potatoes
**Really enjoyed the whole sandwich.. the sweetness of the fig compote with the rest of it was delicious.
Goat Cheese, bacon, onion sandwich
**the goat cheese was not overpowering but made the whole sandwich very fluffy and creamy and delicious!
Orange juice
run of the mill fresh squeezed OJ. It's definitely real OJ, but I'm not a big OJ person.
Cute & intimate interior, interesting music, nice servers, decent prices.
WooHoo!
(seriously, I was in a state of shock at how I inhaled the food and how conversation virtually stopped while we 3 girls munched away.. like BEASTS. Beautiful beasts.) -

Amazing ambiance (cozy, warm and feels like home). Not a huge eating area space, so you might expect to wait in line for a busy day. Not too many gluten-free options but it didn't matter because the current, blue cheese and spinach salad I ordered was fantastic. Sandwiches and pizza looked great too.

City Girl is hands down my favorite restaurant in Cambridge. It might have something to do with them having every variety of carbs on their menu, but either way, I sold my heart to CG the first time I tried their "goat cheese & caramelized onions, apple, arugula on foccacia" panini. It's everything I love between two slices of perfectly toasted bread. Yes, please. I've enjoyed every meal I've had there without exception. Their pastas and pizzas are equally tasty. We also tried the meatball sliders one time, which were delicious! We would have been happy ordering a few more of those instead of getting our meals. Very generous portions and reasonably priced compared to some of the other restaurants in Inman.
If you look at the chalk board in the back, you can see any specials they have, including soups, apps, drinks . They always have a nice selection of beers available. The people working there are helpful and attentive, which adds to the laid-back, unpretentious atmosphere. I usually prefer to go on a week night so as not to feel rushed. They can get crowded quickly on weekends given their small size and reputation for awesomeness. I've heard they're great for Brunch, as well, but have never tried it. -

My friend and I went to City Girl Cafe this morning for breakfast and it was delicioso!
We parked on a meter right in front of the cafe (they are good for only 1 hour, so you may have to step out and put in more quarters to avoid a ticket!)
We met at 10:45am and we only had to wait 10 minutes to be seated. The venue is quite small but the coffee is good and the food is amazing.
She ordered the French Toast and I ordered a dish called "verde", which consists of scrambled eggs with pesto, spinach, and tomatoes, with toast and potatoes. It was soooo good, and her french toast was HUGE and absolutely delish!
I highly recommend this place for breakfast! YUM!!! -

The food is just alright, and now that their prices have gone up and their portions are smaller, I don't see myself supporting this restaurant anymore. I really want to like this place, but I just can't.

I came here with 3 friends for dinner. We do dinner together every two weeks and we had all been wanting to visit City Girl. We got there around 5:45pm and had no problem getting a table. It already smelt amazing as soon as we walked in!
We ordered the antipasto of the day- it was amazing! It had different veggies, cheeses and meats. It the perfect size for something to start.
Then we ordered two pizzas. The caprini and we did a pesto with broccoli on top. Both were so fantastic! It was difficult to decide which kind should be our next piece! Everything was super fresh and super delicious. The service was prompt and our belly's were very happy!
I'll definately go back but for the brunch next time! -

Came here for breakfast this morning after realizing not 1, but 2 other places I wanted to try weren't open. I knew City Girl had gotten good reviews, but I was a little iffy on the name... But after contemplating Cafe Luna or the Friendly Toast, it was decided to try some place new, so, City Girl it was.
The place is fairly small and cozy. I liked the vibe and the coffee hit the spot. The menu is small, but I kind of like having less choices. And there were at least 3 things I really wanted to try so I was happy.
For my meal, I got some dish I couldn't quite pronounce that consisted of focaccia bread topped with 2 eggs, prosciutto , fontina cheese, and asparagus. It came out piping hot with a side of potatoes and a slice of orange. It was awesome! Delicious. The potatoes were good and the flavors were spot on. Was very glad to have stopped in here. It may now be my favorite breakfast place around.Listed in: Best of What's Around (My…, Breakfast

Cute and quirky, City Girl is a great choice for weekend brunch. The place seats about 20, so be prepared to wait (at least 15 minutes). The verde is delicious, as are the roasted red bliss potatoes. The french toast is not among the best I've ever had, but the vanilla-anise flavor was enough to keep me interested.
FYI- their bathroom doesn't have a sink, just hand sanitizer... you can ask to use their counter sink if that is not sufficient for you. -

This is more of a 4.5 star review....
I love this place. I live in the neighborhood and am always trying to recruit as many people as possible to have brunch there with me.
The food is very flavorful, but simple and light for what, at other places, could be heavy and gross. Pastas and pizzas don't leave you in a carb coma and the bruschetta with artichoke pate is amazing! They are also very cool about letting you customize your food. I had really been craving a pizza from a place in the burbs and they recreated it for me to a T. It may have actually been even better!
For brunch, the ricotta with fruit and honey is a great starter or dessert. The sausage and biscuits are delicious and could totally hold their own in Texas, where i had spent many years and consider myself quite an authority on fried chicken, biscuits and such. All of the breakfast sandwiches are amazing. I really can't say enough about how flavorful their food is.
The only downside is how small it is, but that's also part of the charm. A good date spot. Despite how snug it is, people seem to be too into their own food and convos to eavesdrop or care what's going on at your table. This was a huge plus for me after all my time in the North End restaurant scene where your business is everyone elses. Only con is that the wait on weekends for brunch can be a bit long, but it's totally worth it and nothing out of the ordinary for camber-ville brunch spots. -

City girl is great!
I have never had anything that wasn't delicious and very fresh from here.
They have ever changing specials which keep the small menu from getting boring: new antipasto plates, interesting seasonal lasagnas and soups change daily. Good options for vegetarians. Caramelized onion, goat cheese and arugula pizza with a glass of their fresh rosemary lemonade is my favorite combination.
Their salads are big so I find splitting a salad and one of their pizzas with a friend makes perfect portions for two at a totally decent price.
They do have a very tiny dinning area but it feels cozy and European to me. If you can't chance a wait they are pretty fast with take out orders. -

Italian breakfast?! Yes please! As soon as I heard about this place I got my booty over here to sample the goods. And boy were they good. Exceptionally good.
Cute, artsy, hipster place tucked away in Inman Square. If you weren't looking for it you would walk right by. We got there early on Saturday- ok 10:30am but I mean it's Saturday that is early - and there was already a queue. Luckily we were just a twosome and got in pretty quick. Expect a long wait if you have more then 2, it's pretty cramped in there. Actually it's really cramped in there.
Got the breakfast sandwich with spinach and my friend got the french toast. Loved the creamy eggs, soft baguette bread and crunchy salty roasted potatoes on the side. Her french toast was sweet and full of flavor. We usually have brunch to do that catch-up-talk-a-mile-a-minute-thing but we were so busy jamming food into our mouths we barely talked - and that's saying something for us! Best of all our food (which came in rather large portions) and two cups of coffee only came to $20!!!
Be prepared to eat European style with someone sitting right next to you that you don't know. I'm pretty sure I kicked my neighbor a few times simply from proximity. Also be prepared to eat and dash. The place is small so emphasis is on getting your food out fast (awesome) and getting you out fast (bummer) too. Understand that the servers need turn over to make $ but it is brunch and I like to enjoy my eggs and conversations.
Great location, great food, great service with a smile - can't wait to come back and try the other enticing items on the brunch and dinner menus. -

I have a few friends who are IN LOVE with this place. I understand their reasoning - its a cute, friendly, and quirky local spot. The menu is very limited but has very fair (re: cheap) prices. The staff is delightful. There is incredibly limited seating, and lives will form outside of loyal customers who love the food.
I agree that City Girl is great, but it's just not to my preference. -

This place is SO overrated... is what people say when they wake up on the wrong side of the bed before going to brunch. The wrong side of the bed is the left side. True story.
Allow me to contradict what I said earlier, if I may. This place is SO underrated. Well to be fair it's quite adequately rated. I went here for Sunday brunch a few weeks ago and found that the other reviews had prepared me quite well for what was in store.
--THE FOOD straddled the line dividing "tasty" and "delicious" the same way a bike-gang member straddles his Harley
--Speaking of bikers, THE STAFF is comprised of three women, at least two of whom have an array of tattoos. If you look past their rough and tumble outward appearance, they're all very sweet, coming by every few minutes with coffee refills. You should challenge them to an arm wrestling match... I would have, but I got scared. (I'm kidding please don't do this, it's too dangerous... oh, and they're also probably pretty busy)
--THE PLACE is small, as has been brought up by EVERYONE. Knowing that, keep in mind that it will be difficult to seat large parties. I went with my girlfriend and we were seated immediately. Since we had a smaller party we were seated quickly: this lead us to have a small party (in celebration) (small balloons).
--THE ATMOSPHERE is cute, quirky. They're not one of those places that has 100 of the same mug on hand, so if you're drinking coffee, expect your mug to look different from your neighbors. There are various portraits of girls on the walls, many of them with eyes far too big for their faces (what, was the artist high??? I don't understand art. F**k culture.) The size of the cafe gives it a certain coziness that you don't get anywhere else.
Overall, 4 stars. Would have been 4.5 if yelp would have adopted the decimal system like everybody else. -

The coffee's organic here and so are many of the other competing coffee shops, but what places this cafe aside may be the good quality of treats to compliment cofee, all created in house. Classics like banana bread and oatmeal cookies are rendered much more refined, although no much less earthy, by their surprisingly delicate textures. Chocolate choices-most more importantly a Valrhona fudge brownie and also the spicy Mexican chocolate cookie-offer velvety depth. Other standouts consist of thick, chewy ginger cookies, flecked with crystallized bits of sugar, crumbly apple cake, and modest, but effective dark-chocolate-dipped peanut-butter balls.

I love breakfast food, and while I thought this cafe would serve normal/expected breakfast/brunch food, I was so wrong! I ordered the hot sandwich with goatcheese/bacon/carmelized onion and egg. SO DELICIOUS!! the creamy, pungent goat cheese with the fatty bacon, egg, and onions are such a good combo. I also had a bite of the Asiago Biscuits with Sausage Gravy, another yummmylicious duo, and a bite of of the Monte Cristo. That one, is an amazing sandwich.
All in all, I would definitely love to visit again if I want to splurge on some great food. -

Dear City Girl,
If you weren't a girl, we could be having a love affair right now. Having brunch with you some weekends, is what I look forward to. Your goat cheese, bacon & caramelized onion egg sandwich, is making my mouth water right now. I go back every time, and just cannot get enough of it.
Although sometimes I wait 20-30 mins at peak brunch hour to get a taste of your wonderful food, the wait is totally worth it.
Sincerely,
- Priyanka
P.S. You are totally cute and cozy, don't ever change ;) -

I love this place. I would give it 5 stars but you come out smelling as though you've been doing all the frying yourself (read: the ventilation isn't that great, so don't wear anything here that needs to be dry-cleaned and don't go here before going to the movies or somewhere else). Awesome food, okay service, nice place to relax.

So my sister and I live together on paper, but lately, it seems that we're like ships passing in the night. To put it another way, we were long overdue for a dinner/catch-up session, and City Girl is right around the corner from where we live, so we decided to have "girls night" there-- quite appropriate!
I had been here once before, but she had never been, and my first go at this place was pleasant, so......
First, props to the owners/staff, because I know you work really hard to make it such a neat, friendly place to enjoy, and it shows! Even a slight kitchen fire and a shortage of foccacia didn't dampen the experience (although the flash thunderstorm might have if we'd been outside in it!) Alas, the delayed service was actually a convenient excuse to not have to venture out in that.
When the food came, it was delicious; when the check came, it was gracious- the server comped our bruschetta app and our sodas because she felt bad about the delayed service, though again- if we were going to have to wait anywhere, I'm glad it was here.
The decor is kitchy and funky-chic, and reminds me of a lot of places in Austin... so I felt right at home! A true gem in Inman.
Thanks!! We decided this is "our place" from now on-- so we'll be back. :) -

Great breakfast. Got there on s Sunday morning at 11am and had to wait outside for 30 minutes but it was worth it having to survive the cold. I had a wonderful "asiago biscuits with sausage gravy served with scrambled eggs". The only problem, as usually happens in the US, is that the coffee is pretty bad

French Toast - OK
Il Meglio, whatever that means - OK
Girls: 4 girls, 3 of which have visible tattoos, run the place. One of the tattooed girls wears "we can do it" bandana. The no-visible-tattoo-lady mocks about customers.
Place: The tiniest little place, this: 15-top or less. In order to seat groups, city girls, sort of, fly chairs and little tables from here to there. Too much traffic for me.
Product: They claim they make Italian food, however a keyword search for "French" in their brunch menu returns 5 results. Moreover, it says pizza, pasta, panini all around their entrance but their 9 item brunch menu lacks any of them.
Verdict: This is not a place for peaceful Sunday brunch. If you are looking for good-morning-quickie, though, city girls will do the job for you. -

Teeny Tiny. I think my apartment is bigger than this place.
Great veg options, especially for dinner (many interesting and delicious pastas, pizzas, etc.). Brunch is solid as well, with the pesto eggs as a standout. Breakfast potatoes are notable - blistered red potatoes with a touch of fresh herb.
Just expect a wait given the microscopic nature of the place. -

City Girl Cafe, how cute are you!?! Really, you are so darn cute!
The smiley waitress, the art deco on the walls and cute little space.
You made even my tummy smile.
The hubby ordered the grilled chicken panini with bacon on foccacia bread. I think he was cheesing for a good hour after that.
I had the fettuccine with chicken and oil & garlic. Fresh pasta with salty Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top was perfect. It also came with side of foccacia bread. Who doesn't love this bread??
Prices were very reasonable. Paninis at $7 and Pasta dishes from $8-$12.
Located at Inman Square in Cambridge, we were able to get meter parking right in front and it's really easy to get to on the T.
You are just darling, City Girl Cafe :)Listed in: Mama Mia!!

I live nearby & STILL find myself craving cafe girl throughout the week. I can't wait for the weekend, because the food is to die for! You must try the goat cheese, bacon & caramelized onion egg sandwich (only 8.25) that's made on a perfectly toasted french baguette &served with roasted red bliss potatoes. GAH. It's unreal.
Don't forget to get the fresh fruit with ricotta cheese & drizzled with honey as well! So yummy.

City Girl is less than the size of my apartment...and yet, I don't feel like I'm eating with strangers in my living room. Mission accomplished. They always have soup that I want to eat. I love soup. Even better.
The atmosphere it creates makes me happy. It's not totally random art so you're left thinking, 'why have they thrown all this ugly weird stuff on the walls.' It is quirky, but all works.
Every time I've been there I've have great service. Not just good service, but realllly good. If I ask for clarification on something it's met with examples and friendliness, never attitude. They are awesome. Really.
City Girl has been a rendezvous and a cozy little place to tuck away off Cambridge Street. It's been a place for creative, excellent pasta, it has been somewhere to enjoy wine and crisp pizza or soup on a cold night; I have yet to enjoy brunch there, but I know I will when the time comes.
Just go there. You know you wanna.
They don't accept AMEX, but other cards yes...so feel free to bring your plastic if necessary. -

I have not "cleaned my plate" (i.e. licked it clean) in a VERY long time, but let's just say that prosciutto and pea linguini with the lemony cream sauce thingy was irresistible. Ditto the walnut pesto bruschetta. Loved the funky decor for this cozy space, and the casual but knowledgeable waiter guy was fun.
This is a friendly little spot. You should check it out.
