San Diego, CA
It's fast, inexpensive, tasty takeout. Usually, I get the General Tso's Chicken which isn't very spicy but is full of flavor. Somehow they make their food so it tastes healthier than most takeout places, I guess meaning that it's not very greasy.
I recently tried something different and ordered the Mushroom Chicken which was decent but to my taste needed some extra soy sauce. When ordering the combo it comes with a choice of wonton, egg roll or spring roll which are all good. Again, the soy sauce or Sriacha would be my condiment of choice as the sweet and sour for dipping is a little bland.
Most combos will land you around seven bucks and for me the amount of food last me for two meals. It's in between Subway and Ray's and is a convenient location to those in the North Park area. It's not fancy but it's cheap and delicious - just as Chinese takeout should be. -

Ok, I'll bump them up to 2 stars.
It's been a year an a half since I first subjected my unsuspecting palate to the horrors of City Dragon. I've since moved into the neighborhood and drive by it every night on my way home from work. Last week I noticed that they'd updated their decor a bit--gone were the broken booths and dirty floor. They've been replaced with nice, wooden, high tables with stools. Amazing what a bit of paint and furniture can do to spruce a place up. Anyway, I was seriously craving Chinese so I thought I'd give City Dragon a second try.
It turns out that the improvements stopped at the cosmetic face lift. I ordered the exact same meal as last time--orange chicken, chow mein, and spring rolls--so I'd have a fair comparison. They're 0 for 2, as far as I'm concerned. The orange chicken was, again, soggy and greasy, though the flavor has improved a bit. The chow mein--I think it may have been egg noodles this time (although Matt P. insists that they're still serving up spaghetti) but regardless it was unlike any other chow mein I've ever had (and not in a good way). There's huge wedges of cabbage in it that are severely distracting. And the egg rolls, as before, were just meh.
The service was markedly better, though. Very friendly. It still took 10 minutes to get my food--their signs say they cook it all fresh to order, so at least there's that. And it looks like they've added a significant amount of non-meat/faux-meat option to the menu. Maybe that's what they're focusing on now? If ever I am desperate enough to go there again, perhaps I'll give one of those dishes a try, but I don't anticipate this happening any time soon.1 Previous Review: Show all »

i was on my way to the airport to fly either to san francisco or new york to find great chinese food. i was able to cancel my flight after i left City Dragon.
The Pepper Chicken with Rice was so authentic i felt like i was back in Hong Kong. The chicken and vegatables were fresh and the rice was steamed to perfection. I added the vegetable rolls because i had just surfed and was starting. The compliment couldn't have been any better, and 2 veggie rolls for $1.25 was a steal.
City Dragon is here to stay, so cancel your flights to the Far East and forget about San Francisco or any 5 star Chinese Food restaurants. You've found perfection. -

I LOVE this place. They are always really friendly. The food is amazing, and when you eat in the environment is great. I made a big order today that included 12 veggie rolls (which by the way are amazing) and they forgot the sweet and sour sauce. so I called to complain and just let them know and the owner had someone drive to my house to drop off SWEET AND SOUR SAUCE!!!! That is amazing customer service. I live more than 60 block from this place. and they seriously went out of their way for this. They really look out for their customers.

SALTY!!!!! We ordered the General Tso's chicken and all you could taste was soy sauce. It was not spicy, at all, just salty. The beef and string beans was way over salted as well. Egg rolls were standard, nothing special. Fried rice was ok, but the flavors fell flat. Very disappointed, the only redeeming quality was that the food was fresh, veggies crispy and the meat was not over cooked. But none of that really matters when you need to drink a gallon of water afterwards because it was so horrifically salty.
City Dragon, do yourself a favor and either let go of the cook working at 6pm 9/29/11 or teach him/her to taste the food he/she is serving before loading it up with soy sauce. Gross. -

I am baffled about all the 4 star reviews on this place. It deserves 5 stars all the way!
As you drive up it seems to be one of those fast chinese take out places but it is oh so far from that. The food is cooked when you order it (except for the white rice, of course), it is made to your specifications, always perfectly seasoned and nice and hot.
I love that their vegetables are always crisp and fresh and that they have vegetarian options. I just had the kung pao tofu and it was absolutely delicious. The place is always clean and you can look into the kitchen and be assured that there is no gross stuff going on back there.
Best of all, the price is very reasonable! -

I have found my new spot for take out. The hot and sour soup was great, portion size was generous and the service is VERY friendly and fast. I will be ging here for my take out from now on, worth the extra few miles and time.

At first glance I thought this was a ready made fast food type of place, but to my surprise the food is fresh and made to order. I had the Kung Pao chicken combination which came with a side and appetizer. The cream cheese wontons are yummy! Didn't care too much for the side egg roll but the chicken was perfectly cooked and the veggies were crisp and fresh. I also liked the veggie fried rice that came with my combo. It was hard to order one thing because they do have a good selection on the menu to choose from - and everything is a pretty good price. The only bummer was that they don't offer Egg Foo Young as that is my favorite chinese dish and my random chinese food cravings might take me to another place where I can find it.
This is a nice and Clean establishment that you could eat in, take out or get delivery! I was pleased with the take out as it only took 10 minutes to cook up my food. The service is good and the staff is friendly, and it's in a tiny strip mall with a few other food places. But there is plenty of parking! My guess is they do most of the business with delivery. I'd go here again anytime! -

I was very disappointed with the food at City Dragon. With that being said, I understand that this eatery is not an 5 star luxury restaurant, however it feels that they did not even cook the food with any pride or effort. Even the most basic hole-in-the-wall eating establishment should cook the food as if they were cooking for family.
We ordered a lunch special for 4.99 and got an order of white rice with Kung Pao beef. The primary issue was the over salted beef. The seasoning ruined the balance of the other ingredients in the dish. Additionally the onions taste and smelled like they had gone bad.
To offset the over-seasoned dish we thought that the rice could relieve the MSG infused dish. However, this was not the case as the rice was undercooked and slightly raw. Now being Asian, I know that it is pretty hard to mess up rice, as the modern method to cook rice is to use a rice cooker which exactly measures out the ideal cooking time so that the rice will be well done and digestible. Though this place managed to mess that up as well. When you run a Chinese food restaurant, and white rice, a cornerstone staple of Chinese cuisine, can't even be properly cooked, that speaks volumes to how flawed the kitchen staff prepares the food and the lack of effort taken.
We were done for how tainted our impression was of this place and decided to only eat half of the meal instead of all of it. I wish I could tell you the best part of the meal was the end, but again this place begs for ZERO stars when it not only messes up the meal but also the last bite, as my mom found a rock, yes a TINY ROCK in her rice.
You couldn't pay me to eat here again and I'm much safer sticking to the mediocre corporate Subway or never fails me Rays Mexican food both located next door to this unsanitary MSG-pumped restaurant.
If rocky undercooked and salted-up food is your preference, by all means enter at your own risk.
If I could give this place zero stars, I would. -

Was supposed to go out for dinner, but everyone was glued to the tv so we decided to make it tv night and order chinese.
I love that City Dragon delivers. There aren't too many chinese places that deliver...come to think of it, I don't know any that do.
The lady on the phone was very friendly. Ordered the Dragon Wonton Soup, Cashew Chicken, Garlic Spicy Chicken, and the Sweet and Sour Pork.
All were delish. Soup was full of wontons, pork, shrimp, and different vegetables. It wasn't all broth but had a good amount of everything. Cashew chicken and sweet & sour pork were pretty good. Flavorful and the cashews were still crunchy. Probably my favorite was the Garlic Spicy Chicken. Perfect combination of spices and was very crispy.
Must try if you're lazy and craving chinese food. I don't know how far they go for delivery, but I'm glad I'm near :) -

Another year later (over two years now) and Jennifer is serving up the same incredible food, delivery after delivery. Let her know Melissa sent you! We order every Friday night and it's always really, really good. Remember ASK how a dish is made, and customize to your liking.
Our faves, BBQ Pork Fried Rice (the best I've ever had), Sweet/Sour Pork, Kung Pao Beef and a new fave, Garlic Spicy Chicken. Warning, she does use a lot of garlic in many dishes so mention it if you're sensitive.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Normal Heights, CA
I did read the reviews here first, and did wonder about the negative reviews, but the glowing ones were so convincing, I went for it. I live just about 6 blocks away, so my Co-pilot Borias and I trekked on over and for my first try to take home. I ordered the black pepper chicken, asking for white meat. I don't eat much meat, and the typical chicken in some Asian dishes can be kind of scary looking, and not all that appetizing to me. Also got the cheese won tons, and off home we went.
Well, I definitely have a favorite new place to grab some grub to take home, or even have delivered. The pepper chicken was ah-mazing! So good, I ate the whole thing! Just the right spiciness, chicken was perfect, and the sauce was really incredibly good. I can't wait to try some of the other things I almost got before deciding on this item. The staff were so nice and friendly, too. Sometimes I can get a hassle with my Service dog in small little joints like this, but they didn't bat an eyelash, which I appreciate. We will be back. A lot! -

Here's a review that's several months late, but still relevant.
There aren't many choices in San Diego when it comes to delivery. You can have pizza, pizza or more pizza. So I had low expectations when I looked up a place that delivered in my neighborhood. Out of all my options, City Dragon figured to be the most intriguing because, let's face it, Chinese delivery is ridiculously rare around here.
I was pleasantly surprised by the garlic chicken and BBQ pork and their dumpling soup was actually pretty hearty and hot enough to warm me on a cold, rainy winter night. What's more important, you get a lot of food with the $22 minimum required for delivery.
Needless to say, they're not the BEST Chinese food around. But when you're fiending for some Chinese food and don't want to leave the house, City Dragon's a better than average option in a pinch.Listed in: Me Chinese, Me Play Joke...

Holy crap! I am kicking myself for not having discovered this place earlier.... thanks to my trusty iPhone and its even trustier Yelp app, we ended up here on a lazy Sunday looking for some deliciousness.
I"ll admit it, going vegan for 2010 has been one of the hardest things I've ever done.... harder than giving up my dearest woobie when i was 11. However, City Dragon makes it that much easier!
I'd originally passed this place off as a Panda Express-esque sort of place, but thank goodness I was totally wrong!
Their items are wok'd fresh, you can substitute Tofu for pretty much any entree, and the food is cheap! They even deliver!
This is my new go-to spot for Chinese in the hizood! Don't worry Sam Woo, I haven't forgotten you...Listed in: The Vegan Experiment

I wouldn't ever order here again. The people who work here are really nice, but the food is crap. Unfortunately, there is a measly variety of delivery places, so instead of pizza I decided to give this place a try.
Greasy chow mien, no real flavor, just seemed greasy. I got some veggie egg rolls, which were weak, but probably the best thing I ate that I ordered. Since I had to fill the delivery minimum of like $25, I also ordered Garlic Tofu, which was seriously just tofu blocks covered in minced garlic, plain, and also gross, and kung pao tofu, which wasn't anything to write home about.
Perks of this place is that they deliver and they are decently priced. However next time I am feeling lazy and don't want to either make or pick up food, I will correct my thinking right quick. -

Yeah im a fan, but ill make sure to take my own salt.
I loved the food i got the app. sampler, the Eggplant tofu, the Veggie chowmein, and the Mongolian beef. It was all on the bland side. I mean whats a hint of salt to enhance the flavor just a bit. I myself dislike salty foods, but if I am saying that it needs it well man it probably needs a good amount of it..
-Eggplant Tofu not as spicy as i would have liked. i want to see my red pepper flakes.
-Mongolian Beef not as spicy as i would have liked it again if you are going to ask me how spicy.. and i say I LOVE SPICE... please please dont tease me with some little itty bitty spice, thats just not right.
App Sampler- not as greasy as all the fried food i normally get. their sweet and sour sauce is good as well.
For the Most part the service was excellent they dont cook the food till you order it. (that made it a bit pricey about 20 bucks.)
the Chowmein was thrown in at no extra charge, only because i dont like rice. Over all i would go back...Listed in: The BEST! (in my stomach!), The Orient Flavors of San…

It's really a toss up between four stars and five stars. Since I've only eaten the food once, and it wasn't actually *at* City Dragon, I'm going to go with four and try it again for the perfection soon.
A kind man who works for City Dragon (I think I got that relationship right) brought lots of their food to The Other Side during "Say What" Open Mic night this week. It was *delicious*. I am usually pretty neutral toward most Chinese food, but I tried a little of everything he brought, and it was all so tasty. It made me feel guilty for ever eating at Panda Express or the likewise. In fact, knowing this place exists, I may never need to again! (not that anyone ever NEEDS to eat shitty pretend chain food, but you know - it happens!)
The meats and veggies were flavorful and juicy. The rice was perfect. Everything I tasted was perfect. At first I was happy enough to just have free Chinese food on what was going to be a peanut butter and jelly night. But finding it was also really yummy Chinese food was a huge plus.
Anyway, like I said, I haven't ever been to the actual restaurant, but the food is great. They definitely made a good move bringing it in for free tonight because they will be getting my business again and again after that delightful tease of flavor.
Update: I went to the actual restaurant last night, and the people were all pleasant and helpful. The girl at the counter was perfectly polite, and the inside of the restaurant was comfortable. They put my broccoli and beef in a separate plastic bag before putting it in my big bag so i wouldn't leak all over everything else. Much appreciated. -

I have NEVER encountered a Chinese restaurant that uses so much garlic in my life.
Good for some people, I suppose. Bad for me - I'm allergic.
It's one thing if the menu says something along the lines of "Garlic Chicken" - cool, I know to avoid that. But almost everything I have ever ordered from here is slathered in those tiny diced pieces of misery.
As you can see, my reviews of this place have gone downhill over time. It's unfortunate. But when I can only order one or 2 things from the menu, it pretty much sucks. I don't always want Fried Rice. But at City Dragon, that's what I'm stuck with - as I've learned over the past several months.Listed in: Who are the people in your…

I find the food from City Dragon (and I've never had the food AT City Dragon) fairly fresh, well-prepared, and flavorful WHEN they get the order right.
There's a serious problem in the system at this joint.
Language barrier? Maybe. But, I felt so bad for the poor little lady who had to run back and forth between our house and the restaurant three times before we had what we ordered. I felt bad for her because she was a cute little Asian woman who reminded me of my Nana.
Three stars because they freakin' deliver something besides pizza in Normal Heights and because their Hot and Sour soup is both hot & sour. Or at least it was before the delivery fiasco. -

This is not going to be a long, well thought out review, it doesn't need to be. All you need to know is the following:
I'll give them a star for having the balls to serve spaghetti and call it 'noodles'. I shit you not, spaghetti, for real, no joke. I couldn't believe my eyes. The orange chicken was flavorless and greasy. I don't know how you can even mess up orange chicken. Somehow, they managed to make it taste and feel bad in the mouth. I'm glad I didn't order more food there. I won't be going back.
One of the most terrible experiences you could have with food. You have been warned. Recommend this place to your nemesis only. -

I discovered this place when one of their flyers made it to my office in Mission Valley. I must say that their food is good and is very heavy on the garlic, just the way I like it!!
I have sampled most of their dishes and have enjoyed the majority of them. Big props for them delivering food all the way to Fashion Valley when I had a broken ankle.
The owner is super nice and they have only made one minor error on one of my orders to which they were happy enough to fix for free.Listed in: Me likey Chinese food

WOW! I was stunned the first time I ate here... So stunned, that I had to go back and get seconds! For "fast" Chinese food, this place is GREAT, and if you put it on a fancy plate in a restaurant in La Jolla, you would not be able to tell the difference.
So, the cream cheese wontons are so delicious! The great thing about this place is the service. They DELIVER to your house (better than greasy pizza!) and the delivery driver was very kind and courteous, as well as the people who work in the actual restaurant.
Try the vegetable lo mein or the simply crisp vegetable egg rolls... Mmmm! My mouth is watering as I write this.
One taste and you'll be hooked! Highly recommended. -

The BBQ Pork and Teriyaki Chicken is a MUST!!! Totally authentic, delicious and juicy. Excellent with steam rice. You can also request chow mein or fried rice instead but I personally think steam rice is best because it bring out the sauce and its full flavor.
Orange Chicken, Mongolian Beef, Spicy Chicken, Mushroom Chicken are some of the best dishes you can get around here. Hands down, and I actually know people who are addicted. Hey, guys, have no shame, it's all good.
And good news to those of you who are vegetarians.
Everything can be substitute with tofu. All you need to do is ask.
Also, the Dragon Feast is a great deal for 4-5 people. $25 for 3 Large Meat items and 2 large sides... better than KC, guys, but of course some items cost a little more but the portions are ALWAYS GENEROUS. Ain't nobody can EVER complain about the sizes.
Give it a try. Hang up YOUR apron, and pick up the phone.

Based on the other reviews, they seem to be pretty inconsistent with their saltage. When I ordered, they were having a salty day. If they could straighten that out, they'd be near perfect. Great cream cheese wontons, great fried dumplings, good chow mien. I'm a fan. -

Some things to keep in mind before you go-
1. THIS IS NOT CHINA. THIS IS NOT TAIWAN. THIS IS NOT SF. THIS IS NOT MONTEREY PARK. THIS IS NOT EVEN KEARNY MESA. (I have actually had Chinese in all of these locations). Do not expect that kind of "authenticity." As far as tasty, I'd rate it higher than Panda Express but lower than City Wok.
2. It's cheap ($7 for ridiculously huge entree), the plates are huge, and they use fresh veggies and meat.
3. I've eaten there (pick-up) 4 or 5 times. I have gotten a different plate every time, but the best thing I had was the Kung Pao. TONS of cashews and nicey spicey. -

Dear Chinese People:
Why do you hate San Diego? What did we ever do to you? Why do you only send your people who can't cook to our fair city? Looking around my house at least half of my shit is made in China. Don't you think you can return the favor by letting people who can cook set up shop here?
In the end you're only hurting yourself by lowering people's estimation of your cuisine.
I know you can cook because I've had great Chinese food in so many other cities. Are you just fucking with us because you think it's funny? Did we offend some unknown or mysterious Oriental sense of manners?
Please write back, I'd really like to know.
Sincerely,

I dont like to talk shit unless I really feel that its warranted but the last time a friend and I got take out here we took a few spoonfuls, gave each other a look and proceeded to close up the styrofoam box and drove straight into a Wendy's.
I think I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to mom and pop places and I absolutely hate to see food go to waste ( I didnt throw it away but I forgot what I did with it ) but I just could not eat it. It wasnt bad food, it was just bad tasting food. Sorry City Dragon, I wont be back. -

I've had food delivered twice (the second time by accident) and all I have to say is DON'T EAT HERE! I think anyone who rated this highly is crazy...
I didn't write a review the first time because it was so bad that there was nothing nice to say about them....not even one star. But in a starving moment (Saturday night and nowhere to go without a reservation), accidentally ordered from them AGAIN!
The second time I had their food...let's just say...I didn't feel well for the next 48 hours. There was NO WAY that the pork in my chow mein was of good quality. Not to mention that they were spaghetti noodles. Isn't chow mein a type of noodle? You could've fooled them!
Really do yourself the favor and find somewhere else to dine. I have made a promise to myself to yelp-good or bad- to avoid eating the bad ever again!
As yelp is now my permanent reference tool... -

First time and last time I order from this place. Been up most the night ill. Had the Hawaiian Shrimp and Sweet and Sour Pork. I believe the pork was the culprit but I'm not sure. After the 3rd bit I tossed the remainder. I thought the sour was just a description of the sauce as it is with most places, not that the meat was actually sour.
Missing a rally ride today because of this place.

I just finished a super fresh, super yummy Broccoli Beef with fried rice. VERY TASTY. I've also been very happy with their Mongolian Beef, as well as a few others. One disappointment was their BBQ pork --I believe they could learn some techniques from the Adams Ave. Street Fair vendors on this one. Their version is not "authentic" but they have the raw material to revamp this dish to as high a quality as their other dishes.
Hard working, earnest family runs this very needed quick serve Chinese at this location. Ambiance inside is clean and bright, but they could learn a few tricks from the Loving Hut just west of this location -- subtle refinements can make a big difference.
Great value and affordability. A welcome asset on El Cajon Blvd.and they have been at this location for a couple of decades, which says alot.
THEIR BBQ PORK NEEDS TO STUDY THEIR NEIGHBOR, BANGKOK SPICES THAI. Please, MAKE IT REAL BBQ ! ! -

City Dragon is cheap and pretty good. I stay away from the combination dishes because the items for those tend to sit out for a long time, but have them make you something fresh and you'll will not be disappointed. Extra points for the mega-friendly owner lady, even though she forgot to give me both chopsticks and a fortune cookie last time I went in. (I am so demanding extra cookies next time.)

3.5 stars.
Both the GF and I were too lazy to cook tonight, so we turned to trusty yelp to find a Chinese place that delivered to our house, City Dragon came up number 2 on the list.
After reading the reviews we decided just to drive the 1 mile down the street and pick up our order.
The place itself is truly some hole in the wall place sandwiched between a Subway and a horrible mexican place.
Ordered the cheese wontons, orange chicken, and garlic spicy fish after reading the suggestions on the reviews.
Was really happy with the cheese wontons and the garlic spicy fish, was a little disappointed with the orange chicken, not that it was bad, just feel like for what I paid the quality wasn't up to par.
The garlic spicy fish was very garlicy and it was good. Threw some red rooster sriracha on it and was hooked.
Overall, I still need to try the rest of the menu, but I will go back, plus you get tired of only getting pizza delivered after a while. -

The slightly upmarket version of Maxim's Palace, a block or so to the west.
You'll get just about the same menu: combination plate-centric, with the usual fried, saucy fast food: orange chicken, kung pao, mongolian beef, sweet and sour pork, egg rolls, won tons, soup.
City Dragon has a slightly wider range of offerings, and the food is a touch more expensive but commensurately a touch better.
Also, you can get City Dragon delivered, which is pretty much their one killer app. -

I went to this place because I was drawn to their "healthier options"- something that doesn't happen too often with Chinese food. It wasn't bad Chinese food by any means but I would suggest finding another place with cheaper prices. To be honest, it tasted like any other Chinese take-out food but was much more expensive and didn't seem or taste too much healthier.
Also, the service was kinda slow and not the most helpful. Like I said not bad food but I would suggest saving some money and going somewhere else. -

At first I was skeptical about eating take-out Chinese food because I always think it's already been made/prepared and they're just waiting for you to order so they can scoop it. But little do I know, they cook your food for you when you order. I was amazed at the service of the workers there, because I do not expect the best hospitality for a little shop but their attitude was awesome. The lady that owns the place is really friendly and helps customers out with the menu. The young guy that cooks the food is the best chef there. Overall the place is a solid place to eat authentic Chinese food at an affordable leisure setting.
Things to try:
-Orange chicken ( Absolutely the best in town. Prove me wrong!)
