We took our dogs to Coronado beach so they were filthy when we got out of there and this was a great place to get em clean.  Very friendly, helpful staff and the Solid Gold food we usually buy for them was cheaper here than anywhere else we've been so we got a couple of bags b4 we drove back to Vegas.  We'll definitely come here again if we're in the area.

So I have held off reviewing City Dog for a while, I have known the owners for a couple years and didn't want to be bias. SO I will be reviewing pretending like I don't know Chuck & Gary.

The first time I visited City Dog was before Tina & I even had a dog, we were just looking at all the stuff we could buy when the time came to get a dog. After Dieter came along we purchase 99% of his stuff from City Dog. They have a really good selection for the health conscience pet owner. Their prices are reasonable, and we have done comparison shopping on the internet for things that we weren't sure if we could find cheaper. We have yet been able to find better prices for things online after shipping is added in to the cost. The store is a little small, but I have heard they are looking to expand, so they will be able to carry even more awesome products.

They have one of the best food selections I have seen in a pet store. After adopting Dieter I did a lot of research on food since I have heard not so good things about foods you would find at Petsmart or Petco. City Dog stocks Evo, Wellness, Honest Kitchen, and other high end products which are some of the best food you can feed your furry friend(s). They also stock all natural treats, so you can still give lots of treats without the not so good side effects the all flour treats can have.

We have given Dieter a bath here before, but he gets kinda stressed at this point in his life about baths so we decided it would be best to just give them to him in our tub, but when he gets used to baths we will probably take him back due to the pain of cleaning up afterward.

Lindsey does a great job at grooming! I am a professional pet sitter (www.wizardofpawspets.com) and I take a hairy, large, tangled, standard poodle to Lindsey. She always listens to his owner's requests. does great work, and the dog is always happy when he is there. He was miserable at another place so I switched to City Dog. Plus he is always ready when they say he is going to be ready.

City Dog also carries the organic food I feed my own cats. And, it's cheaper than anywhere else I have seen it.

Go City Dog!!!!

City Dog is the best self-dog wash in San Diego!  Chuck and Gary fill the store with beautiful products and friendly workers, not to mention their amazing groomer, Lindsey.

They (people and canines alike) welcomed us when we strolled in door and asked how they could help.  City Dog is a great neighborhood place to buy food and a do-it-yourself wash. It is small and a little busy but isn't life in the city? I haven't washed maddie here yet but next time she stinks I will definitely walk her down to City Dog. The food wasn't more expensive (maybe slightly but not a noticable difference) than at the big chain stores. I definitely recommend this place.  Its right on the trolly line south of market street.

**** a few days after I posted my review Maddie and I went back to City Dog on less desirable terms. She had shit herself. After 8 long people/56 dog years she had never shat on herself and was visibly embarrassed. Poor Maddie had eaten something terribly poisonous and was sicker than a dog (I know, I know). Anyway after some emergency vet care (IV/Shots/Anti-Bs) we strolled into City Dog for a wash 15 minutes before they closed. They were the so gracious and me not to worry about closing time, to take all the time I need.  A vet tech in training, Steph(v)en was genuinely concerned and so helpful.

City Dog is better than OB Dog Wash because for only a dollar more:
-you get to use their hefty blow drier (photo attached) ($3 more at OBDW)
- they have those ultra absorbent towels
- You get a choice of shampoos (Maddie used the green tea/mint)
- Friendly and helpful people

What a great place to have in the 'hood!

These guys are super-friendly, provide excellent service and are pretty reasonably priced, especially for downtown.

They know our dog, Lil' Tommy, by name, and give him great cuts, about every 3 months. We get all of our food, greenies, and Advantage from the boys!

My husband and I take our energetic lab/weim mix to get a bath here. "Wild Man Ace" as I call my dog gets really excited and runs all over, knocking clothes and items off of the racks. The staff members are so nice, straightening everything in our path. Also, they make sure we have aprons, towels, and help Wild Man into the tub (he doesn't like climbing up the ramp). They always check on us and make sure we have plenty of oatmeal shampoo. I really like some of the "resident dogs", a cute pug and a black dog I think is named Zippy. They are so cute when they come over and try to check out what is going on with our Wild Man Ace.
My husband pays ahead of time for a bunch of washes and therefore checkout is very quick and easy!

This is a great place!

I love these guys! The shop is cute and has a ton of great (DURABLE) toys at reasonable prices. The food selection is great - mostly if not all holistic stuff which I am big on. My dog has had a self serve wash there twice. She is a Great Dane and is TERRIFIED of the tub. The staff was super helpful - they helped me load her in and steady her and were really calming and affectionate with her. I also think Lindsay, the groomer, is the best in town. I don't have long haired dogs but I have seen the work she does. She is phenomenal. Check out their K9's and Wine event at the San Diego Wine and Culinary Center Wednesday nights. Lots of fun!

I really want to like this place. For one thing, it's within walking distance to where I live. Secondly, a lot of my neighbors use this place and like it. Thirdly, the owners sponsor a cool event called Canines and Wine almost every Wednesday at the Wine and Culinary Center.

Unfortunately, the two times I have taken Molly there, it's been a miserable experience for the both of us. So, I'm not sure how to handle this review. I think the main difference is whether you are taking your dog to have THEM groom and wash your dog versus doing it yourself in one of their tubs. Everyone that takes their dog and drops them off to be groomed and washed and have their dog's toenails painted loves this place. Meanwhile, us poor schmucks that are too cheap to have their dogs bathed by professionals get the shaft.

Here's what my experience has been like:
Me: I need to wash my dog
Person at the counter: That tub is open.
That was essentially the end of my "service"...Up until the end where I needed to pay, then they remembered I was there again. Sheesh.

They didn't help me get my dog in or out of the tub. Didn't help me secure her in the tub. Didn't offer me an apron which i didn't see they had on the back wall obscured from my line of sight until I was leaving. Didn't check to see how I was doing once. And as my dog made continuous attempts to escape the tub, and was very nearly successful, didn't help me out at all. Molly was pissed because the water temp kept changing on her and every time it went from warm to cool she tried to make a break for it. I was pissed becuase I was getting soaking wet in the process and so was my purse and I wasn't getting any assistance. When I tried to make eye contact to ask for towels, they were too busy re-arranging the pink jackets for purse dogs and socializing with their friends.

So I was completely wet, my dog was completely wet and my Coach purse was wet (read: invest in hooks or shelves for customer's belongings).

I asked to have Molly's nails trimmed. It took all of 2 minutes she didn't like it but was well-behaved. They charged me $10!!! And they didn't polish her nails. Molly's pitty friend Hennessy always gets her nails painted hot pink when she goes to City Dog.  Molly's feelings were hurt (okay they were actually my feelings that were hurt) after we paid to get her nails trimmed for TEN dollars and they didn't even offer to paint her nails. My manicures don't even cost $10!!

Hands (paws??) down, South Bark is still the premier place in service and set up for do-it-yourself dog washing in san diego. But I guess if you live downtown and have the moolah to have your dog washed for you, City Dog is the place to go.

CITY DOG ROCKS!!!

The truth about City Dog is... CITY DOG was voted 1st Place Winner on San Diego's 10News "A-List" for Best Pet Services of 2007: Here, see for yourself:

http://kgtv.cityvoter....

Everyone loves City Dog, it has great service, great owners (Gary and Chuck), a Professional, very talented Groomer - Lindsy. More so, City Dog has "atmosphere" conducive to a successful, friendly, neighborly, very welcoming enviroment.

I love City Dog! I can only report the very best quality of service and staff here. My own personal experience has always been positive.

Surely Michele M. is confusing City Dog with someone else, most likely a low budget speakeasy she visited while attending a Garage Sale, Flee Market or Swap meet on a binge...

This is one of my favorite Dog Washes/Groomers located in the City of San Diego on Park Blvd. in front of the Trolley Tracks.

Chuck and Gary are the owners and are always very friendly and courteous.  I really like doing business with people who are so good with Pets-- and People!  The staff is friendly, helpful, and I have always had a positive experience in there.

My two dogs love it--
Started off with one dog being very "hesitant" at getting in and out of the shampoo/bath area (he was rescued from a shelter and had probably not had this type of experience before).... but now he's really got the hang of it.  The staff was very courteous to help me get him up and down the ramp going to and from the bath-- where it made things a lot less stressful for him.

He's gotten to where he loves the baths so much now-- has really "come a long way -- Baby"-- with this process.

-------------

They host the City Dog Kanine Wine events held at the San Diego Wine and Culinary Center on Wednesday evenings (you may want to call for reservations; because this place books up and is normally Packed).  These are fabulously fun-- and they give out dog treats and prizes for the raffle that they hold there.  Lots of other dog owners and dogs there-- is always a great time!

Lindsey is our new groomer---
She is fabulous with dogs-- and even helped me to get my dog up and down the ramp the first couple of times that I was in there.  This made such a huge difference-- because there was no way that I could have lifted him without that help.  Lindsey is very good with her grooming techniques.  Particularly like the way that Honey Bear looks when she comes home from the grooming.  Lindsey is great!  And Honey Bear always looks and smells totally Fabulous after a great grooming experience!

I highly recommend them!  Great place!

Picture this - Thanksgiving weekend 2005 - two pooches who have traveled with us from Los Angeles and have spent a relaxing weekend strolling around San Diego and lounging at our hotel decide to get rather stinky.  Not wanting to spend the rest of the weekend worrying if these odorous canines are annoying those around them, I asked the hotel's concierge where we could go.  The first words out of his mouth were City Dog.

Leashes on, we walked over to City Dog, just recently opened, and met the nicest shop owners I could imagine.  Dogs were bathed, conversed with and fed more treats than they could have ever hoped for.

Each trip back, if there's a canine in tow, City Dog is on the itinerary.  The self service dog wash is well equipped with a plethora of shampoos and skin treatments and the merchandise available is great.

Long live City Dog - two resounding BARKS from Sammie and Lucille.

If your looking for a damn good dog groomer then look no further, I have a toy poodle and I can't tell you how many bad hair cuts she has had from other local groomers.  The owners are super friendly and the shop has very cool do it yourself wash stations.  Highly recommended!

I love this place!  The owners are so nice & I my doggie feels very comfortable here.  The tubs are nicer for someone who isn't that tall and it's very high tech.  Also, the dryers are included with the wash and it really is a better deal then you would think it would be.

This was a great place to bring that special furry friend of mine to be pampered.  The thing with places like this is that you never quite know what you're going to get.  Trendy posh places tend to bring out the diva in me and I get ready to assume the haughty no nonsense attitude such that the employees only have time for.  However, City Dog was different the moment I stepped in and one of the workers immediately greeted my dog warmly as if we were neighbors and I was out on a stroll.  Next, the groomer was extremely nice and experienced with no attitude and very confident.  I was very comfortable leaving my dog and as promised, 2.5 hours later, my dog came out looking like a rock star with a pink bandanna around her neck.  The place is a little crowded with the amount of people, pets and various items for sale inside and it would be nice to see tables and chairs outside for patrons to relax and sit.  However, Horton's and 5th Ave aren't too far of a hike from the place so I'm very happy with what I can get.  Thanks City Dog!
