The location of City Beach is bad.  You gotta make several turns to get there when you can see the darn building from the street!  The activities are pretty cool, they have rock climbing, volley ball, billiards some arcade games and a huge chess board.

What's unique about this place is there is a bar and restaurant in the middle of the whole joint.  The food is okay and the drinks are decent.  This is more of an afternoon/early evening activity spot.  Don't go there for night life, it's usualy dead even though they have the room for a dance floor and an outdoor lounge.

I knocked off a star because of the location. There's only one way to get in here and if you miss it, you have to turn around. The service is also pretty slow...even though we had a big party...the service seemed to lack both times I've patronized this place.

There are lots of fun things to do though. The bar is a wee bit pricey as are the activities.  We played a fun game of bocce though so that totally made up for everything else. It's a fun place if you have a large group of people. It's even more fun if you have lots of money to spend.

What's up with the food and drinks at this place?  The entree I ordered, they brought it to me semi-cold. And, the drink I ordered, they said, "they ran out."  2 stars for the activities.  Zilch for the food and drinks.

The 2 stars is for the food and service. Sounds like the rock-climbing and bouldering is cool though!

Last night wasn't the first time I came here, and unfortunately it will not be the last. It's located fairly close to where all of my old co-workers work/live, and there's really not much else in Fremont, unless you drive to D&B's in Milpitas, so it's a common gathering place about once a month or so for beer, shots, and the less than desirable food and snacks they serve.

Two words for everything on the menu: greasy and cold.

One word for the service: negligent. (ie you will not get water unless you ask for it, and even after you ask for it you might not get it for about 10 minutes.)

The atmosphere itself is ok, it looks pretty cool because there are indoor volleyball, badminton, and basketball courts, rock-climbing, etc, and it's large enough for you to gather a bunch of people together and get rowdy.

To put it into perspective, this might not be a spot you'd want to take a girl on your first date.

This review is for their activities only.

I came here the first time for HS grad night (wow..) but I recently revisited to try out their activities.

First off, tried some badminton.  It was empty so we were able to latch ourselves to our own court..so empty in fact that we had to ask them to set up the nets :).  There were either lessons or team practice happening at the volleyball nets, so i don't think these are as open to free play.

Rock climbing isn't bad.  I was confused because the difficulty rating seems different than at Ironworks.  The easiest climbs I found were 5.7 but they were too hard for some newcomers I came with.  The harder climbs looked fun, but I had a blast on the bouldering wall instead.

I think this place would be great though for a children's birthday party.  First of all, they have an AUTO-BELAY feature where kids strap in and climb away.  If they slip, they slowly get let down to the ground.  Parents won't need to worry about who belays who's kid :)  The only problem with this system is that if you slip or fall...it's right back to the beginning you go!...and i know if i fall, i wanna get bac right  where i left off!

If you wanna try rock climbing and this is closer to you than Berkeley, than check it out.  There's also badminton, food, pool, and ping-pong to play as well!

ok, so CB has kind of gone to shit in the nearly 8 years I've been coming here (broken up by a 3yr stint in which i was too busy having a boyfriend to climb).  I was one of the original pack of idiots that spent 4 days a week in the climbing gym and it was a lot of fun (like the one time i let 4 of the guys haul me up on a rope to the top of the gym and drop me, hoping they didnt give me too much slack. yeah, poor decision on my part).  But those hey days are over!

Now, i come here once, maybe twice, a week and only to climb.  It's not fun to drink afterward anymore unless you're hanging out with Mike and Rerun. :)

The gym's routes have taken a turn for the worse and it's evident that less experienced setters are the ones putting these routes up (with the exception of RR because he likes to set 5.10s and call then 5.8s just to annoy me) and the turn-over on new routes and boulder problems are few and far between.  The climbs are just getting boring now and there isn't a good solid group of climbers there that you can befriend so they can properly beta and teach you good technique.

Overall, the place could be a little cleaner and they could wash the holds every now and then and steam clean the carpets.  It's starting to smell like a 13 year old boy's armpit.

This review/rating is on the food only, since I had to leave before I could play anything!

We had bbq chicken, caesar salad, potato salad, veggies, chips/salsa, dessert (different combinations of super sweet squares).  The food is just so so... The bbq chicken is basically cooked chicken slathered on with bbq sauce.  Everything else tasted as expected.

As a part of this special event, there were many games offered: pool, foosball, bocce ball, basketball/volleyball (on the same court in the back which meant we had to choose one).  Rock climbing was at an additional cost...sucky.  Overall, this place is nice to have an interactive group event.  Remember to sign the waiver!

I came here for a special event so our group had a catered BBQ lunch buffet.  The food was ok; BBQ chicken, beef brisket, caesar salad, tortilla chips, beans, steamed veggies.

I enjoyed learning how to play bocce ball and hanging out with friends but for me, this place didn't reach my high expectations.

Good place to congregate as a group, though.

------ --------- -- ---- ------------------ ----- --------------- ------
This review is for rock-climbing and bouldering only!
------ --------- -- ---- ------------------ ----- --------------- -------

WARNING to the chicks with 3-inch+ nails: cut them. They will hinder you from having grip! This hobby is not for the girl who doesn't want to build callouses on their hand. The most work out my hands have seen all week is from typing 90wpm on my Mac. So after leaving City Beach, my palms/fingers took on the nice color red and felt RAW!

$7 with college student ID on a Friday night + keep your receipt and you can come back any time for the rest of the day until they close. Surprisingly it wasn't as crowded as I'd anticipated it to be. Age ranged from 5-40ish the night we went. Lots of friendly individuals to ask for advice if you're a little hesitant.

The thought of me hanging 45 feet with nothing but a rope to keep me safe didn't faze me. This place also has different levels (novice - leet) for you to try, but I stuck to the n00bie area.

Seeing as how I've never done this before I felt a bit sheepish about asking for help, but the staff here is more than willing to run you through and give you a summary of how to slip into your harness and hook yourself up to the automatic belay. You can rent shoes here too which are a big help.

I'm not pro and I have yet to be certified, so I have to stick to the automatic belay and bouldering until I can prove to them that I can tie knots which kind of sucks coz I don't even wear shoes with laces anymore (I blame Vans for this).

I felt like those cool girls in The Descent minus the creepy underground people attacking.

There are showers in the restroom with curtains so you can spend an entire day rock climbing, then get gussied up after and head to the restaurant if you wish.

Overall, I had a great experience! I'm coming back here next week or when my body's done being sore.

Suggestions:
- bring athletic/rock-climbing friendly shoes if you don't want to rent
- chalk/gloves for the serious (great if you'll be bouldering)
- stretching is very crucial especially if you've never done this before.
- the harness rides up so don't wear short shorts!

This place used to be more fun than it is now.  For a while it was super busy on weekends and then it got totally dead.   It seems that the crowd has picked up again lately.

They made some pretty big changes for the nightlife here.  It used to be just a place where you can go to play pool and they have the restaurant and bar open.  Now you have to be 21 to get in and it's a semi club from what I've been told.  I never went in for those events.

The place is huge and I think would be more fun just for athletic activity.  They have a rock climbing area that makes it unique to many other places.  They have areas for the rock climbing where you don't need someone trained to go onto and an area where you do need someone trained.  The person needs to know how to tie the knot on the rope otherwise they might drop you and trust me, you would not want that.  It doesn't look that high but when you're at the top and look down, it's pretty high!

They also have some basketball courts that are used for games and sometimes volleyball games.  I came here once for a company event and it was cool how they booked out the place and had it set up.  I don't think I would go back to get a drink these days though.  DNB's seems better.

This review is primarily for the rock climbing experience.

I had a blast the last few times I came here. They have climbs for beginner climbers, intermediate, and for the more experienced climbers. There are people of all ages that come here and is definately great for the entire family. The staff is friendly and it's fairly cheap. It never gets crowded b/c it's a wide open space with plenty of "rock" for you to climb. You don't need to rent anything, just bring a good pair of shoes and strong hands! The harness is provided.

You can also go bouldering.

(rock climbing and bouldering)

I heard how rock climbing gives you a killer back, so I decided to try this place out. As Jaye C mentioned, very friendly staff, you just gotta ask for help and they explain everything to you. We tried rock climbing with automatic belay. It was hard at first but kinda got boring after a couple runs up and down. We tried bouldering. They don't have too m any basic ones but still V-0's were really fun. Next time when I go I'll definitely get some chalk so I don't bust our hands open.

Worth the $7 Friday night just can't stay later cuz it turns into a club. I'm not sure if they have a dress code but definitely not in sweats and t-shirts I'm sure.

WTF? waaaaaaaaaack. $10 cover charge and there was NO ONE inside. Wow. Honestly, what would one expect for the Fremont nightlife? I love the security guard who's all dressed up with a badge hanging from his chest thinking he's the shit and the badge says "security" on it. YOU ARE NOT FREAKIN ROBOCOP, MAN!  Relax.  Save your money and go to a real bar or D&B or something.

I had no idea City Beach existed before I was invited here for a friend's surprise party over the summer.  I was expecting a wave pool or something, from the name...which would have been cool.

As it turns out, our group of about 50 was taking over an entire area of the restaurant/bar that is sort of awkwardly stuck in the front of the huge building.  Then later in the night, it turned into a sort of makeshift nightclub.  They also have quite a few pool tables and tons of other activities (shuffle board, rock climbing, volleyball) which made it seem like a more grown-up version of Chuck-E-Cheese.

I can imagine lots of corporate events in the East Bay being held here because it can accommodate a LOT of people and there is a restaurant, full bar, and TONS to do to keep you busy.

City Beach is an interesting spot, and I'd like to check it out again just to try all of the activities.

I'm giving this place 4 stars based on their potential, not necessarily my experience. I stopped by on a whim last night, while in Fremont for other activities. I guess we chose a bad time to go to City Beach, because there were two events at the time: a Bar Mitzvahs party and a Ultimate Fighting viewing. The place is lame for making people pay $5 each to watch Ultimate Fighting- because any patrons who wanted to eat but not pay $5 were subjected to the extremely loud television behind black curtains in he center of the dining area.

As far as food and service: good enough. We had burgers and drinks, and I guess it's not hard to screw that up. The waitress was friendly and very efficient.

The place looks like it can be a really fun place, if you catch them when there isn't an event (or if you're interested in the event). I'd return, if I lived in Fremont- I'd love to try out the climbing wall, basketball, etc.

bar food is edible. the main attractions are the activities - rock climbing, hoops, volleyball, pool, foosball, multiple TVs playing sporting events, ping pong and more. odd thing is, our group could not rent a basketball court on the spot. we had to make a corp reservation with some coordinator prior to arrival. must be some odd insurance house rule. and it cost $75 per hour to rent it! i don't need to fill my basketball jones that badly!
time to order plate of nachos and WATCH basketball on the LCD television.

Watched a Warriors game at the bar.. too bad they lost.  But they had lots of TVs, but some where on HD and some on regular, but people tend to gravitate towards watching the HD sets, but the audio game from the regular broadcast making the speech and commentary out of sync.  The food was ok, service was good, crowd was cool.  It's kinda funny how it's an athletic center, but they have a bar with alcohol.  Physical fitness and drinking alcohol? Eh, sounds cool to me.

this place is a lot bigger than the one in santa clara.  mainly because of the rock climbing walls.  they also had a big obstacle course and pool tables.  i definitely prefer the fremont location.  our company all got hammered and we were struggling with the wall climbing.

note.  alcohol and strenuous activity do not mix. i think i literally sweat out all the alcohol i consumed.  the food they catered for us was pretty good, though i found myself eating a lot of chips and salsa.

alcohol and fun times.  what more can you ask for....
how about medals?  we got them last year at our event at the city beach in santa clara...so why not at the bigger one?

keep in mind though.  once your face turns completely red from alcohol (sorry i have asian glow), do NOT attempt the wall climb.  it is such a work out...i was definitely not prepared for it.  nor was i ready for the obstacle course following the wall climb.

I'm writing this for a specific event for the south bay. It was for the UFC 71 pay-per-view.

I spent some time looking for bars in the San Jose area that has the PPV event. PPV sporting events are much more exciting in a bar setting than watching it in the privacy of your home.

I went to UFC.com, which listed all the local bars that had UFC 71. There were about five. My main factors in deciding which bars to go to were distance, information, and price.

I believe three of the sites had a promotion on their website to the event. Two of the bars charged a cover for $20. The other one, City Beach in Fremont, charged $10. I decided to take a further look at City Beach, it had a decent location, facility, and an appealing menu. I took my girlfriend to City Beach to watch this UFC ppv event.

The City Beach facility was really cool. It is a big sporting facility with wall-climbing, volleyball, and the place we were to watch the event, a bar with about ten HDTV plasmas. We had really nice seats with three HDTV's within our view.

We ordered city beach (buffalo) wings, and they prepared the wings just the way I like them. With very good hot sauce, and light on the oil. My girlfriend was a little hungry so she ate literally the entire plate of 12 wings. Of course, I ordered drinks, I ordered a margarita and they brought me this pint full of margarita. It wasn't strong as I like it, but the quantity of it really made it worth it. I also ordered a pizza, which was good, but not great.

The UFC event kicked-off and the place was rockin'. The people who came really were into it as it was loud as a real sporting event. By the time the main event happened, there was somewhat of a silence, because you could feel the anticipation of the Liddell vs. Jackson main event.

When the knock-out occurred, the place literally exploded. I pretty much started to jump like a monkey, and started to scream "YEA!!" I high-fived a bunch of random people, and it was just a crazy moment.

City Beach really delivered in this event. The cover charge was more than fair in comparison to other places. The food is priced moderately, and was very good. Actually, after an hour after we finished the wings, my girlfriend asked me if she could have more, lol. We couldn't because the orders took so long, and the event was nearly done. Next time, I probably need to order 30 wings for the two of us.

I'll come to City Beach for all future UFC pay per view events. They definitely won my business.

I miss the older days when City Beach had live music and parties every weekend for the 21 and up!

They had awesome live music like Hayward's reggae band, Beechwood Aged. Or sometimes just a DJ.  It was nice to have a local place to party!  This was about 3 years ago.  These days... it's a lot more quiet, but full of family fun.

We've celebrated my nephews birthdays here.  Rock climbing is always a blast and promotes fun, adventurous exercise!  Sorry Chuck E Cheese, we're gonna do it rugged and go climb walls like Spider Man!

relatively inexpensive place to play some badminton, climb some rocks sticking out of the wall. It feels clean, but it was hard to find the entrance. The food is good, but it took FOREVER for the food to come out. my friends say that its sorta pricey, but if you want the privacy, it sorta helps.

I came here with my friends for lunch and afterwards we had a blast playing pool, shuffle board and indoor vball. I wanted to try out their indoor rock climbing wall but I guess that'll be for another day. This place also offers safety classes so I'm pretty hyped up about taking one sometime later on in the season. For $8 you can play badminton, shoot pool, bball or vball and for $15 you can go rock climbing. Whata steal! I will come back someday ^.^

Most people come here for work for some kind of team-building function.  And, I must admit, that's the reason I came here.  We went here on a Friday after work, just to hang out.  There was probably about 12 of us and we were seated in one table, no problem.  Actually, it was 4 tables put together, but still on a Friday night, that's pretty good!

We had some appetizers and drinks and they were good.  Not great, but not bad either.  Everything on the menu was as what you would expect from any type of bar.

The gimmick at this place is that they have a lot of different types of activities to do.  They have mountain climbling, pool, giant chess, badminton, and volleyball to name a few.  That's why it makes it such a good place for team building.  That is, more-than-drinks kind of team-building.  The price for these activities is a little high, but if you're doing it for team building, then I'm assuming you're going to get reimbursed.  In that case, it doesn't matter.

This review is for the rock climbing area:

I was there w/a rec class from school.  Ample climbing space.  I didn't climb very high....I climbed on the areas where you don't need to have a belay partner.....very chicken I was (going back down), all trying to cling to the rocks & not let go....at least I tried it out though.  And more than once.  More than twice.  More than thrice even.  =)

This review is centered on the services I've exhausted, but overall this facility is quite expensive in all of it's offerings. They offer billiards, a bar/restaurant, indoor rock climbing, shuffle board, indoor badminton, basketball, volleyball and basketball.

Billiards - Last time I played here, it was $10 an hour. While it is a convenience to play here while drinking, or after eating and other activities (climbing/badminton, etc.) The tables have very noticeable wear from dents to old cloth. It might not bother you if you're not serious about pool, but otherwise spend your money elsewhere like Edgie's in Milpitas.

Climbing - The bouldering routes here are graded in a much more difficult fashion. A V0 here might be a V1-2/3 at Touchstone in San Jose. But to their credit, the climbing style here relies a lot on technique, and body manipulation rather than power. You won't see many routes you can just campus here. The top-roping here is cheaper than Planet Granite by 2 dollars ( $17 vs. 15?) but a good tip is that if you're a student, with your valid student ID card, climbing on Friday is only $7. Only then can you consider City Beach a steal.

City Beach is a good place to take the kids for activities and rock climbing.  However, the  only downside is the rude service by the kids at the counter.  If it weren't for the rude service I would give them a 5 star.  They really need to train them better.  They seem to be more concerned about what they are doing in the night rather than who is in front of them.

I had my 22nd (??) birthday here.  Actually, I think there were about  3 of us who had our birthdays really close together.  We closed the whole place down, partied the night away, and by splitting the costs - it was decent price.  I spoke to the manager a few times before the event and city beach was very accomodating.  They had a very helpful staff too.

I haven't been here for the day activities or team building, but I have been to a few night events and it was really fun.  Oh and you gotta try the garlic fries here!

Weird to get to: From Auto Mall, make a right onto Technology, then first left into the parking lot. Directions aside, this place could be a cool hangout! Lots of rock climbing space, everywhere actually: in a huge gymnasium, encapsulating a ropes course, in the basketball courts, and in another dining area. It costs $14 for an all-day climbing pass, but that's not all! You can play virtual bowling, or darts, or human sized chess like Harry Potter. (Just kidding, they are about the size of Darby.) You can also play v-ball, badminton, or ping pong which is $8/hr. OR just eat and hang out at the bar! The crowd is pretty mixed here. It's a pretty cool concept. I just don't feel energized by it. -Matt

This review is strictly for the restaurant at City Beach, as I haven't used the rest of the facility.  We went there last night for a friends' 30th birthday.  It was Cinco de Mayo AND a big title fight, so we requested a table out of the main bar area  so that we didn't have to pay the $20 cover to get in (outrageous).  There were 17 of us, and the vast majority of us all got there together.  The waitress came over and took our drink order promptly, and everything went downhill from there.  She brought our drinks back a good half an hour later.  Perhaps 15 minutes after that she came back to take our food order.  In the next half an hour or so, our remaining friends joined us and she eventually came out to take their orders as well.  And then we waited.  And waited.  And waited for our food to come.  Granted, it was the holiday and the fight, BUT there were not a whole lot of people there.  Certainly not enough to warrant over an hour wait for our food.  But as we moved outside to get to the Bocche ball lanes, our food started arriving.  Or I suppose I should say, everyone else's food started arriving.  Since there were so many of us, I calmly waited, figuring mine was next to come out.  Then, she got to the end of her food running, and asked if we needed anything else.  Um, yeah, MY food.  And food for another friend had been forgotten, too.  She she went back inside and brought out my friends' potato skins.  She told me that my order had been left out somehow, and that it was now in line.  Wait!  Does that mean I have to wait *another* 1.5 hours for my SALAD AND FRIES?!?!  It was not a complex order.  At least 20 minutes later, my salad came out.  She told me that "they had to put the dressing on the side."  Why they had to do that, I don't know, but that was odd.  She also told me that my fries were cooking right then and she would bring them out when they were ready.  I scarf down my salad. And wait, and wait and wait for my fries that evidently take 30 minutes to cook.  So I go inside and try to find my waitress, and run into someone else that asks if I need anything.  Oh, sir, you don't even know.  I told him my tale of woe, and he promised that the fries would be out soon and I wouldn't have to pay for them.  I should think not.  Perhaps two minutes later, my fries arrived.  They were not anything spectacular, so that was a  bit of a let down.
Maybe this place would be better with a smaller group, but the wait for even the main group that was served at the same time was ridiculously long.  The drink I got (a pom mojito) was totally yummy, the salad was tasty, but nothing spectacular (and I just realized that it was supposed to have macadamia nuts on it and it didn't), and the fries left much to be desired, and trust me, I was desiring plenty by the time I got them.  I would have only given them one star, but because they comped my food, the mojito was awesome and since the rest of my friends didn't suffer my fate, I tacked on one extra (and generous) star.
Large parties use at your own risk.

I've been to a team-building event here, and it was a lot of fun! But my review will have to be on food, drinks and service, since that's what I'm most interested in this place for.

The food menu changes a bit, so bear with me. They used to have a wonderful tortilla soup.... it was a meal, and only $3.50 for a big bowl. It was tasty, and had shredded chicken in it. Yum! Their philly cheesesteak was also very good. The service was always very slow, though, so if you're there on a day off, no biggie. Enjoy your drinks and chit chat with friends. If you're there on a work lunch, then try to get the check right after you get your food so you can leave when you need to. Everyone's nice here, but they move at their own pace.

The happy hour has great food, too! Chicken strips with different sauces, chicken wings... good stuff for free! It's sometimes hard to get the bartender's attention (even for me! ... I know!.... wtf?) but if you mess with him enough, he won't forget you after the first time. Usually. It DOES get busy around the bar, so just come with your good nature intact. Know what I mean?

:-) So, the food & drink are good, the bacci ball courts are fun, but they charge like $14 for the bucket of balls to play bacci, where at some places, if you're eating and drinking, the games are free.

Still, it's a fun place to go after work with your buds, and to wait out the rush hour traffic.

I went here a few years ago for a double birthday for some friends.  We had the entire back area reserved, as there were about 40 people in attendance.  I don't remember the food, so it was neither exceptionally good nor exceptionally bad.  We used the basketball courts area and played several games, including basketball, hula hoops contest, and giant sumo wrestling (see pics).

The facilities are clean and fairly bright.  I like the outside dining area; we used that once the summer evening lowered the July temperatures.  I've never come here regularly nor had a membership here.  It was a one-time large group activity and I didn't have the desire to come back.

They have a giant chess board, too!  (see pics)
