We were all quite curious about what visiting a citrus park entailed. It does not entail eating oranges: they may not be offered for sale at all due to anti competition laws. Bummer. The tiny samples of the fruit grown on site were really good. Signs are posted all orver warning of security yet oranges lay littering the ground around the trees.
The volunteers and staff were unable to play the video introduction to the self guided museum tour as they couldn't get the dvd player to work. The history is really interesting and the little pictorial exhibits are cute. A friendly volunteer shared interesting citrus facts with us.
After looking through the museum the kids were looking forward to the gift shop. We learned that they closed at 4 and that they did not accept credit or debit cards. We rushed to a gas station and got cash and got back at 3:40 only to find that they had closed early. The kids were really bummed out. The volunteer apologized but it was pretty lame. They are only open on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays so we won't be going back before we leave.
On the corner of Jackson and Van Buren there is an unaffiliated citrus stand that sells citrus from Bakersfield. We also bought fresh strawberries there.

In 1873, the U.S. Department of Agriculture forever changed the history of Southern California when it sent two small navel orange trees to Riverside resident Eliza Tibbets. From the two original orange trees grown here in Riverside, CA, I bought 25 lbs. of oranges for $8.50 from the Sunkist Center California Citrus State Historic Park Non-Profit Management Corporation's fruit stand located on the corner of Jackson and Van Buran.
The oranges are so sweet, the juice from each orange I have eaten constantly runs down my arm! I gave some oranges to my girlfriend, Deae Mae, some to a family from North Carolina, and I kept the rest of the oranges-still eating the oranges to this very day! Awesome!
The State Park is located in Riverside, at 9400 Dufferin Avenue (at the corner of Van Buren). The address of the office is 1879 Jackson Street, Riverside. In the Arlington Heights - Lake Matthews area of Riverside. The State Park's phone number is 951-784-0456.
I know the contact information is confusing, but hey-this is a very humungous State Park! I hope you will enjoy eating those oranges as much as I have! Ya gotta check out Ranger Rick's crib at the Citrus State Park! Ranger Rick is living large!
