Classic Mill Valley. Old-school 2-screen theater right downtown in "the Village". It's small, so there are only 2 movies showing at any one time, but it's friendly and charming. However, the prices aren't old school ($10), and you're still subjected to an awful lot of pre-movie ads.
I just learned that, after decades of being owned by the same family, the theater was just sold (for a mere $2.5 million ... that's a bargain by downtown Mill Valley standards!) to the fine people/organization who revamped the Rafael theater in San Rafael. A lot of these smaller indie theaters are in disrepair and go under, so I'm glad to see that this one looks like it will survive.
Oh, and don't miss the cool 20s-style bathroom, with its movie-star lights and octagon-tile floors.
I have been going to movies here for 34 years. It is an old theatre that was divided down the middle many years ago, and then nicely updated in the old fashioned style some time after that. Each side is its own theatre. Thus, the balcony on the right side curves one way, and on the other side the other way. The front row of the balcony is cool because you can put your feet up on the rail and you are looking straight across at the screen. The offerings are almost always top notch, and it is one of the two main venues for the Mill Valley Film Festival. It just has a great feeling....and it's nice to be able to have dinner around the corner at the nice regular funky restaurant, Toast, and then walk over to the theatre. Or better yet, if you're a townie, like me, you can walk to town for dinner and a movie.

Extremely friendly employees--it's fun to greet them as you enter. Great food and drink selection (I'm partial to the hot cocoa). Comfortable seats. Good films. Center of town. All good.
I went to see Control, the Ian Curtis biopic. I overheard people in line complaining about the seats in the theater. My seat was comfortable. I had popcorn and Toblerone. Any theater that breaks out of the standard candy offerings is A-Ok in my opinion. They also have baked goods. Brownies, chocolate cake and cheesecake.

How can you not love a movie theatre that serves cheesecake along with the Milk Duds and popcorn?
Still retaining Mill Valley charm, the Sequoia usually shows films that are not your typical Hollywood flick. Charming indeed.

This is one of the only theaters in Marin where you can find a good indie flick. Just recently I saw "Science of Sleep" here, but I've also seen "The Proposition" and "Wordplay" here in the last 6 months...just to give a general idea of what kind of movies they show.
It's an awesome little theater with good seating, excellent snack bar, especially the popcorn, they don't show 15 minutes of commercials and they have a very cool staff. I'm glad we have places like this in Marin.

I went here to see Colors of Memory with a friend, the movie was wonderful and the theater was great. Of course I'm used to the trash Napa gets for a theater. The food items were pricy (but what theater isn't?) and the seats were great.
We did have to go out of our way to get our tickets but that would be due to the fact it was a film festival and not the normal round of movie showings.

In terms of movie theaters I have always prefered the large megaplex Cinemas with 18 different movies playing at one time where the seats lean back far and mold to your back. Mill Valley has this small theater that doesn't really have the standards or dimensions of megaplex theaters. They do, however, play awesome movies that you can't find anywhere outside of the city.

So cute! The theater I was in had seats that were angled slightly, but it worked... nice, clean, helpful staff, and in the cutest neighbourhood around. $6.50 matinee shows (before 6). Lovely.

Terrific neighborhood theater. Good popped corn! The best thing about this place is they are walking distance from my house.
