Mexican restaurants tend to group up and I'm not sure why. It is because they are afraid to hang out by themselves? Are mexicans typically are more social people? Do their suppliers only deliever at specific intersections? I have no idea the answer to these questions but there's a new mexican hole in the wall mexican restaurant right next to Taco Taco and Cilantro. And, hopefully, it'll stick around for awhile.
My girlfriend and I were headed to Taco Taco when we stumbled onto this place. The menu looked attractive and it was empty inside so I decided to take a risk and go in. While there, two other tables filled up with mexicans (which is always a good sign). Service was attentive, the menu was your typical tex-mex food and I was disapointed to find out that they charge for chips and salsa. GROAN. Chips and salsa are to mexican restaurants what bread is to french - it should just come. Le sigh.
We ordered guacamole, a burrito, a hard taco, and beans. The hard taco was great - it retained its shape and wasn't destroyed while being handled. The burrito was delicious but not spectacular. The pico de gallo was good though. The guacamole was delicious though the guacamole at Guacamole in Astoria is better (and cheaper). The beans were fairly typical.
I like these kinds of restaurants because they remind me of the food a mexican mother would make if she was just serving a non-special lunch to her family. Or how I imagine a mexican mother would cook. And it probably would be the mexican's nanny and the family would be very middle class but, still, in my day dream, this is the kind of food that would be served in a mexican family. I don't care if it is pure fantasy.
The decour of the place comes straight from an Oriental Trading catalog and they know it. At least the TV was on univision and the music was in spanish. That gives the place that extra special touch of class.
