Growing up on the east coast I didn't know what Mexican food was until I moved to Texas. Still today I am not sure I know what Mexican food is. I guess I like some Tex Mex.  I have tried dozens of Mexican restaurants in Austin and Round Rock. I don't know why but we seem to end up at Chuy's more than any of the others.

The decorations are great and in Round Rock lots of people have put pictures of their hound of love on the waiting area wall, some cute bark barks I admit.

The only item I don't like about them is if you are going during lunch or dinner on a weekday or any time on the weekends. You almost always have a long wait unless you are the first groups to arrive.  On the weekend larges groups of soccer or little league baseball teams arrive with what seems like thousands of kids just ready to chow down. Maybe this is a sign of cheap food or great food or both. The waiting area where they have the free chips and salsa is so full most of us end up waiting outside, very hot this summer.

When you do get seated the tables, booths are really close together and sometimes you can't pull your chair out due to the other table already seated next to you already has the space but you manage and go on. So get to know your neighbors, have a laugh can be fun.

All the above may seem bad that that is part of the charm.

The wait staff tends to be young and do their job very well; many have tattoos of various sorts over their body even the females. Trying to figure out what drawing the have placed in various parts of their anatomy is fun, makes you wonder what you can't see!

I like their light chips and dip especially the jalapeño sauce. I don't like real spicy food so I order mine mild.  I like the burritos and enchiladas with queso sauce and beef fajitas. My foolish friends like their Mexican food extra spicy, they cry sometimes it's so hot but they love it.

So it's a fun place, relatively cheap, good food, beer and drinks are fine, if you are one of the few that has not tried one of the many Chuy's in the area try 'em you will like 'em.

You can always buy a keep Austin weird T-shirt of various colors.

Will I go back? Over and over and over .............

Yelp is my only hope for salvation. I am going to confess my eating sins in the Church of Yelp, have my soul washed clean, and then wait for judgement day when I can swim in a sea of roasted chicken burritos. The burrito was quite literally a 6" x12" fried piece of heaven. Plus chips with ranch and queso. Thank god it was lunchtime or I would've added a 1200 calorie margarita to the already tipping the scales calorie intake.

Chuys gets four stars. It takes a special kind of restaurant to inspire the kind of blind devotion. Its a hot mess of delicious food, velvet elvis, huge margaritas and jalapeno ranch sauce that people would just as soon bathe in as eat.  It loses a star for its lack of healthy options and for its retarded parking shortage.

Now to go find some reverse lights and a backup beeper for my ass.

I grew up in Round Rock (but haven't lived there for 8 or so years). My family would drive into Austin several times a year to eat a Chuy's because it will always remain one of Austin's best places to eat (regardless of the size of the chain).

Great menu (it wouldn't hurt to change it up a bit), excellent drinks and happy hour.

Creamy tomatillo, creamy jalapeno and hatch sauces are good enough to drink.

I have been in this area for over 20 years and Chuys is one of the places that I take friends to eat when they come in town.  You must try the FREE "creamy jalapeno" which is an additional sauce for the traditional chips and salsa.  I would recommend trying to avoid the main dining times around lunch and dinner.  Try to go early or expect to have a wait.  The beef fajitas, chuychanga, or chile relleno never disappoint.

I am going to confess something very strange, I love this place but am not crazy about the entrees. Maybe it's that I haven't found the perfect item yet but I am going to keep trying. What I do LOVE are the following... the creamy jalapeno dip, the queso and the Mexican Martini's! I could live on all that alone. The atmosphere is great but this is a very popular joint so expect to wait, especially on the weekends. The staff is always very knowledgeable and the service is generally very good. We go several times a month. They have a special menu they put out for the "green chili festival" each fall for a few weeks. I have found some great items on there but they are usually only around for that short time.  I am also very happy with the kids menu.

"It's for tourists." "You're so cliche." "Go to (whatever place) on (whatever) street for real Mexican food." You know what? Bite me.

I was introduced to Chuys in the River Oaks area of Houston a loooong time ago. Loved it. It was one of my go-to places. Moved to Round Rock and began hitting the Chuy's on Barton Springs. They built the one in RR and we have been going almost regularly since it opened. I love it. Wife loves it. Kids love it. We got the shirts to prove it.

I really like the steak burrito and the chicken sopapilla. We gorge on the chips and salsa. I am all about the Hatch chile salsa by the bowlful. Wife and oldest son drink the jalapeno ranch. Youngest son insists on having multiple bowls of their deluxe tomatilla on the chips and everything else he orders. Pour the jap-ranch on the rice! MMmmmmm...

Chuy's is not "Mexican" or "tex-mex".. It is it's own thing. We call it Chuy-mex. And we love it. Trendy overpriced food snobs "on the cutting edge" can go pound sand. This place is good and fun and reliably delicious. It's always on top of the list for our out-of-town guests.

So there.

you want super authentic? head elsewhere. you want a homey mexican restaurant vibe? keep movin'. The wait is usually ridiculous but hey! that just leaves more time for chips, outside conversations and margaritas-while-you-wait that don't really count since you haven't been seated. I would deal with a lot of kids and suburbanites to pour jalepeno ranch all over...everything on my plate. and my friends plates. and the chips. GO NOW.

My sweetheart and I eat at Chuy's 2-3 times a month. Sometimes only for happy hour when we eat out of the trunk. Yesterday I ate the Mexicob salad. Very fresh, filling and had just the right amount of twang with the peppers and creamy jalapeno. My wife and I took home our favorite desert. Tres Leches. We decided to split one as they are pretty large. It was hard to keep her from eating more than her share, even though we marked it down the middle. Both were very good hot summer day favorites.

Pleasingly clean, professional courteous staff. The prices are average and I ordered the Chuychanga (Chimichanga) and Spinach enchiladas a la carte. My order came with complementary chips and salsa which I wasn't impressed with. I found the food pleasant, typical TexMex, but not extraordinary. We ordered it togo and I was really pleased that the manager came out and offered complimentary drinks for our delayed order. Tonight was my first visit and I'm not sure about the history of this place but I don't recall seeing it out of the Austin and surrounding areas.  If you like TexMex and you want a family friendly environment with great service, I would advise this place. I'm still looking for authentic mexican rest. however.

I don't understand the celebrity attraction to this place.

What Chuy's is good for:
Mexican martinis and free queso
What Chuy's is bad for:
Everything else

Normally, I'd give a joint like this 2 stars, but they get an extra point for the free queso.  Go to get drunk and gorge on liquid cheese.  Leave without ordering a meal.

Why do people love this place again? Maybe I have to go to the original Chuy's, but I've been here a few times and have given it a number of chances, and I just leave unimpressed.

The decor is fun, but the food is just ok. There's always a long wait and the ONLY time there wasnt was when my husband and I came here at 10:30pm for dinner. It's just not worth it to me when there are better tex-mex places around. Maybe I just need to go to the original.

Anyone who loves garish displays of Elvis, '65 memorabilia, and fresh salsa will have a great time at Chuy's.  Food is excellent, portions are 'Texas-size,' and waitstaff is attentive.  Up for some fun?  This is the place.  You're welcome.

I went to the Chuy's on Barton Springs on my very first visit to Austin for the novelty of going to the place where one of the Bush sisters got in trouble for under age drinking.  I didn't enjoy the food so much, but the environment was fun.

Now I live here, but am stuck in Round Rock during the work day.  Though I find Chuy's to be over rated, it is nice having that piece of Austin in Round Rock.  It took me forever to find something I liked until I tried the Rio Grande-carne gisada enchiladas-no sauce for me, just melted cheese.  Since I never eat the rice, I started ordering it ala carte-making it one cheap meal.  (Smaller meal makes me not feel so bad stuffing my face with chips)

The one thing I have fallen in love with at Chuy's is the creamy jalapeno.  Be sure to ask for it!  I've gotten over the addiction-needing it weekly to stay alive, but still love it.  I've also grown tired of the carne guisada enchiladas.  My new Chuy's meal is the taco salad with beef fajita and beans instead of guacamole.

Go to Chuy's Round Rock to escape Round Rock, enjoy a Texas Martini (maybe that's what they're called at Trudy's), look at the pictures of all the dogs in the bar area, and be prepared to leave smelling like Chuy's (sometimes a deterrent for me).

As you can tell from other reviews, eating in this restaraunt is awesome.

I'm making a list of people we used for our wedding, and since we love Chuy's so much and wanted to share our Texan love with out-of-state guests, we got the Round Rock Chuy's to cater our rehearsal dinner.  They did a fabulous job of making it easy to order, easy to pay, easy to rely on, and gave great, fast service.  The food was just as good as if we had been there in the restaurant, and gave us a nice Texan styling to our rehearsal dinner.

My favorite part is their jalapeno ranch dressing, which they call Creamy Jalapeno.  You can request it from your server for dippin' chips if you haven't had it.  They sent with our order an entire styrofoam cup of it.  I was tempted to drink it, but abstained.  Barely.

I love this place, especially the Round Rock location, because they have my dessert-margarita pie, which I was disappointed to learn on a recent trip to the 183 location that they do not serve it there.  Basically it is a key lime pie, but the crust.... coconut, almonds, and buttery goodness...

For all the locations, I love their creamy jalapeno sauce, as well as anything with chicken.  It is so moist and flavorful.  The chicka chicka boom boom enchiladas are the best, and the chicken tostada is a close second.  Not to mention the big ass bean burrito with the deluxe tomatillo sauce.  There are some enchiladas I like as well, I think they are called Southwestern, they are stacked, with green chile sauce, chicken, and cheese.  I am getting hungry just typing this!  And if you go for happy hour they have a free nacho cart while you wait...  mmmmm... I want a margarita now (try The Dot)....  and to think, I live right around the corner...

Update: Chuys 183 has an awesome chicken-stuffed deep fried avacado on Wednesdays.... yummy...

I used to hate this place until I ate the chicken fajitas.  I don't even like chicken from restaurants because I always get some nasty gristle chunk that makes me lose my appetite.  However, they use all white meat and make the tortillas from scratch.  Love it.  However, the wait is so unbearable that I only go during the most random of times like Tuesday at 2 pm.

ok... i am going against the grain on this place... It is fair at best. Service is always with an attitude and the food is average.  We went for lunch last week, had a waitress that would not cracked a smile if I came in there in a clown suit.  They are very proud of the food price wise.  The only thing i think is really good is the Jalapeno Ranch chip dip. Again it is still the run of the mill mexican food place.

A Round Rock version of an Austin institution.  This Chuy's has some of the same vibe as the original, but with a bit less funky, and a bit more kitschy.  It's clean and cheerful.  I like it.

The service is awesome, in a relaxed, fun way.  They will make you feel right at home. The food is good, especially if you like queso, which you can get on everything.

There are places you can get better Tex-Mex food, but for the combination of good times and tasty eats, Chuy's is hard to beat.

So I met my family out here about a week ago on a Friday evening, and quite frankly don't see what the big hype is about Chuys. Maybe it's just the location, but everything just seems too cramped. We had a wait that was shy of an hour, which i didn't mind, as we were able to chill on the front seating area and relax for a bit. I had to go to the bar a couple of times to get refills on drinks, and this was were things seemed to be wrong. Granted its a Friday after everybody gets out of work I know a bar is going to be busy. But the table section that is near the bar seems too near. IN the sense that it leaves a narrow path to cut across from the entrance to the rear of the resturaunt. So regardless if you are just trying to get to your table or find a way to get a drink at the bar, this area just seems not smartyly designed. Then there was the waitress that really didn't seem to care. With 5 of us, we got seated in the rear, car themed area, on a booth, so 3 of us sat on one side, and I was kinda off the edge to give us 3 a little bit of room. Well, makes me wish I was sitting on the inside because our waitress, and I say this w/no disrespect, but was overweight, kept on rubbing herself on me. I don't think she was trying to do it on purpose, but sometimes when she would pass by and stop right next to me to allow a server to go through, she came a bit too close and bleh, jello. And the even worst part, no apology whatsoever. The first time I let it go with the thought that it was an accident. Second time I tried to scoot more in without putting my parents at a discomfort. Third time I said "Excuse me" and she just turned around unaware. Honestly I think being slimmed by Slimer from Ghostbusters would have been a better feeling. Luckily, I had someplace to be for a friends dinner party and left early, but ya, my Chuy's experience was no where near what I always here about this place. Normally, I would have given this a 2star, but going to be nice and give it a 3 because I didn't eat any of the food which I hear is worthy. But next time, I will be trying one of the different locations and make sure I dont sit at the end of the booth...

Anyone that gives Chuy's 5 starts should be ashamed.. To me it is just a run-of-the mill, ubiquitous, boring Tex Mex place that has the usual boring dishes like Fajitas.  If I was from Alaska maybe I would be thrilled to eat here, but living in Austin you can get fajitas at the gas station, post office, anywhere.. Come on people, surely Chuy's isn't 5 star....What would Fonda San Miguel be then?  Tied with Chuy's? I bet people just get hammered on Margarita's and then remember some good feeling, not sure what..
