Great place for fruits and veggies. Lots of produce, much of it organic, and all of it quite tasty. You can also get lots of different spices and breads here. It's also relatively inexpensive, especially compared to grocery stores. They also get bonus points for carrying the delicious Annie's Asian Sesame salad dressing.
Good little neighborhood market.
This place used to be AWESOME. Now it's over-priced and yuppified.
When I was a kid I used to stop here on my way home from the school bus stop up the street. My mommy would always get me some kind of snack and the Greek couple that owned the place knew us by first name.
Now the only good thing about this place is that it hasn't 100% changed the way it USED to be.
Still, it's the closest produce store to my house, actually, the only produce store in Noe Valley (unless you count Safeway, blah).
Church Produce recently changed ownership and remodeled, and now carry organic produce as well as all the conventional produce they used to carry. Prices have gone up, but the prices used to be like Chinatown prices, so prices are not unreasonable, and the market is cleaner and brighter with new coolers and fresher produce consistently.
i like the new owners a lot, too. They are very friendly and welcoming, whereas the old owner was a little unfriendly to me. They kept the really cheerful, helpful produce guy who worked for the old owner, too.
Though I pay more now, their organic produce is very good, so I still shop here a lot. Plus they carry the only whole wheat tortillas I have ever liked - they are worth going out of the way to get. The granolas are good, too, and you can get reasonably priced big jugs of olive oil. Also I like the new coolers and now buy their eggs and perishables, whereas before, I didn't think to, as the coolers were kind of funky and beat up. Good neighborhood produce stand/small grocery store - really good selection and you are supporting a nice local business when you shop there.
Just recently moved to the Outer Noe area to realize that Church Produce can pretty much take care of my regular shopping cart. The selection of vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy and other deli products is unique. 5 start for a wonderful convenience store!
Nice neighborhood grocery store. Lot of organic produce. Also conventional. Not as cheap as Chinatown or Mission, but way better than a chain grocery store. Small place but well stocked and clean.
This block of Church packs the 1-2 punch with Church Produce and Drewe's. Church Produce doesn't only have great fruits and veggies, but also canned items, pasta, salad dressings, etc. The prices are great and they let me use my credit card... which is always always much appreciated. Love this place!
This place is Really great and you can't go wrong here for Fresh produce. They Have great other goodies. Highly Recommended!!!
I go here all the time -- fresh produce and almost anything you would need in a pinch. They extended their hours to 8 pm which made it way mroe convenient to stop by after work.
I rented an apartment in Noe Valley for a week and this was one of the neighborhood groceries. It is efficiently packed with almost anything you need to prepare a good vegetarian meal (there are some meat products, but not much). There is also a nice selection of bread, cereals, and other tasty treats! Highly recommended!
A business can best be judged by how it serves its community.
When the Mikey Tom was forced out of business (when was that - '05??), Church Produce rose to the occasion by offering organic juices and produce at reasonable prices.
When Pomi (the pomegranate/tea mixture that used to come in thick, reusable glasses) first hit the market, Church Produce offered their product at prices comparable to corporate competitors' like Safeway and Ralph's.
I shop here often and with pride. The aisles are narrow, but the produce is fresh; and the prices are more than fair.
Employees might appear indifferent, but they are hard-working, kind, and helpful.
And, despite its diminuative size, the store turns a high-volume of goods. Quality product at competitive prices from a privately-owned business.
Keep on keepin' on.
PS - This market has recently been renovated, with the addition of open-front refrigerators, cured olive bins, and colorful, produce-themed artwork.
The little market that could!
This place is jam-packed with useful items and stuff you didn't even know you needed. (Ajvar anyone?) I can count on this place for solid produce at decent prices. Great tea, grain and canned food selection, too.
Not as much De Cecco pasta as there used to be before they spiffed up the place, but so much other good stuff. Fresh herbs, greens (kale and dandelion and collards? nice!) and dairy are strong suit. Oh, and the bread! And the cereal. Nice long hours, too.
Wow, what can I say about this place that other has not already have? They offer a good variety of produce and fruits, and it's 3 blocks from my house. I go here probably at least once or twice a week, and they just finally re-did the inside of it to offer more stuff (including an olive bar-classy). It's a bit tight in there if there are a lot of other shoppers (popular after work, so be warned!).
Bring cash or ATM. Visa/MC only , no AMEX.
I love this place. They are super consistent, which is something I appreciate in every aspect of life, but especially in a grocer.
The women who work there are really nice.
They have an excellent selection of Acme breads, pastas, crackers, spices, dried fruits and nuts, canned foods, dairy, all sorts of little jarred things and produce, of course. Not to mention the prices are fantastic. You can get practically all your groceries here and it's so much quicker than trying to get in and out of that horrible Safeway that is near by.
Excellent grocery store in Noe Valley that carries all kinds of things you'd never expect - like dried tortellini and pine nuts.
Even better after the recent remodel. Decent prices. 7$ min for credit card!
I have a giant crush on this place.
My sweet baby took me over here. It's about 2 blocks from her house, which is about 1 block from Safeway. So worth 1 extra block, or even 10 extra blocks!
This place is not only adorable, but it's CHEAP! $1.49/lb for both peaches and nectarines, when they were $2.49/lb. at Safeway! I love small businesses, but I think I had always just assumed they were more expensive than the big grocery stores since most large businesses are the devil and muscle cheap prices out of their suppliers. Normally it is worth paying those prices for the quality of the product and service you receive at the smaller places. That is true here, but the prices are actually better too!
They also have great cereals, pastas, grains, spices, condiments, breads, etc.!
I'm in love, and I find myself trying to think of things I need just so i can come over here! Love it. Definitely check it out! Not just produce!
This place has always been wonderful, but mid-2008 they got a new owner and some much-needed renovation. Great improvement, lots of good dairy in the new dairy case. There's tons of stuff hidden all over the place -- I keep finding more great things! And they sell PG Tips, which makes my English hubby very happy -- he only needs to walk around the corner. Makes him feel very at home.
On top of all the great selection, the gals who work the registers and the guys who stock are all sweet as pie. Really friendly, nice, helpful. Lovely smiling people who I enjoy seeing on a regular basis :-)
This is a great neighborhood grocery - it reminds me of a bodega in NYC, minus the random electronic equipment for sale and the lottery tickets.
They do have a pretty full selection of produce and some fancier items (dried gourmet mushrooms!), as well as fresh bread and canned goods. The staff here is super friendly. Their seasonal selection of fruit is quite good - my tree ripened peach was one of the best peaches I've ever had!
If I'm working in the 'hood and I can't make it to my regular grocery store, I'll pick up a few things from here since they're open till 8pm every night.
Great Store.
Yay- this place is such a gem. the prices are unbeatable and they have everything you could want. if you cant find it... ask. there is so much hidden in this tiny space that you would be amazed. the employees are very nice to boot.
This place manages to stock everything you would actually want to buy from a Safeway (with the notable exceptions of tp and wine) in a teeny-tiny neighborhood corner store with fantastic prices.
And for all the mentions of produce past its prime, 2 things: 1 - the greens are always the freshest of the fresh, which counts for a lot in my book, and 2 - I appreciate that they will sell produce through its life cycle; have you eco-minded noe-valleyians any idea how much produce Safeway pitches to keep that certain look about the produce stands? Ridiculous. So you really have to go in to Church Street the way you would a farmers' market, expecting that some of what you had in mind might not be at its peak that day and graciously choose what does appeal.
Nicely done CSP!
Amaaaazing produce and Acme bread.
Where else can you buy 2 gorgeous, perfectly ripe bananas for 39 cents at 8:30a when you're baking banana bread and realize you have no bananas?
A pint box of fresh figs for $2.49?
Lord have mercy!
Love this place, you can find ANYTHING you want, just ask, and somehow they have it ( in such a small space )
Fresh head of romaine lettuce is like 80 cents!
Great veggies and fruits, and everyone in there is so nice.
I love to come here to get fruit, veggies and nuts. The prices can't get any better either. They also have a selection of chips, bread and other yummy stuff. The people who work here are nice and very helpful.
I will travel all they way here just shop here for goodies.
I reccommend this place to everyone.Who cares what part of the city you live in.
Another neighborhood market I used to frequent (this one when I lived in Noe). It's a gem. Particularly good for a stop after the Alemany Saturday farmers market, when you need to round out your market haul for the week's cooking.
I love that I can walk my pal Grendel to this place in less than 15 minutes, tie Grennie up to the meter post (he is a dog after all), and find all the veggies I need for dinner at a great price. If I'm cooking with meat, and I usually am, I walk a few doors down to Drewes Bros.
In 45 mins, Grennie's had a walk, I've gotten some exercise, and Hubs and I will have a nutritious meal in, well, about 3 hours. I love to cook but I do it real slow.
This place is great! It looks teeny tiny, but it's packed from floor to ceiling with an amazing assortment of dry goods, produce, bread and other tasty treats.
It's great if you need to run out and grab something quick. If you're looking for something specific, though, they might not have it at that time. The organic bananas you saw last week may be gone and you'll have to hunt elsewhere. But everyone is friendly and they have a decent selection.
Don't pay attention to the person who gave this place one star. This place is great- awesome selection of produce that is well cared for along with a plethora of food you want like imported italian gnochi and canned tomatoes, pickled goods, quality middle eastern and indian "instant" food, granola, acme bread, large selection of kettle chips, strong cheddar cheese, several greek and french feta's, wide selection of nuts, good olives, and much more!
There is a reason why all the firemen in the area (several different units) come here - because its healthy and good.
3.75 stars
Convenient market to have in the 'hood. Produce, dairy, Casa Sanchez salsa!, fresh bread, and other foodstuffs...
My only gripe is that the fruit is a lot of the time overripe. So the reasonable prices mean nothing if I'm not even going to buy it.
I know I write 5-star reviews. This is the old, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all," gig. Bottom-line: I review only the places I love with sincerity.
I love Church Produce. They are seasonal, local, and cheap. The owner even once lent me bus fare when he realized I was short. The women working there know their stuff and everyone takes pride in bringing food to the table.
A nice neighborhood place that makes me proud to be a part of the neighborhood.
i happened upon this cute little corner market on a rare ride on the J Church. needing to get off at 29th, and a bit on the thirsty side, I ducked in quickly to find a refreshing beverage and was surprised at the cheeriness that greeted me inside Church Produce. i dunno, it's the kind o thing where you can just feel happy vibes everywhere. makes me look forward to another rare occasion and J Church ride.
What an incredible little market! It's such a gem. When I moved into the neighborhood I was sad to have left my favorite little market in Berkeley, and dare I say, this one is even better! It never ceases to amaze me how you can walk in wanting just about anything (coconut milk, mango chutney, just about anything), and they have it! Those of us within walking distance are so lucky!
Maricon NOT welcome!! I just returned home, after overhearing the owner/husband stand right next to me and say in a very low voice to a worker stocking the shelves, and pointing to a man checking out..."maricon..."
DEFINITION - Maricon
Latino English and Spanglish
1) Derogatory term; crude word for a gay man used by straight men and women to insult gay men or to question the masculinity of straight men. Comparable to faggot.
Shhhh...everyone, stop telling the world how great this place is. It's already hard enough to navigate and I'd rather the entire city NOT discover that they can get basically everything they could possibly need to cook just about anything in about 200 square feet at the end of Church street.
I admit, I originally turned up my nose at shopping here... but I was clearly wrong to do so. This little storefront is packed with fresh, good-looking produce that Safeway would only dream of acquiring. The prices are easily 1/2 to 2/3 cheaper than the supermarket, and without the excess packaging that accompanies produce from Trader Joe's. I also love the selection of imported goodies -- because even white yuppies need fish sauce.
Maybe I wouldn't be so hard on the place if I hadn't just come from the Alemany farmer's market, where I was able to get beautiful plums for like 40 cents a pound, but this place was a disappointment. Particularly because I've been there at least twice before to pick up the fixings for fruit salad at a friend's home around the corner. However, this time there were fruit flies (I'm guessing, but it seems logical based on where I was) flying around the produce. There's a good selection of stuff, and the prices are good, so they may get one more shot, but it will only be because I'm in the neighborhood, not for a special trip.
I really like this place. I like coming here sometimes just to see what's new. I like being surprised, like buying something that I didn't have in mind when I set out on a neighborhood stroll. I love that they have bagged dry fruit that they sell very affordably by the pound. I love that they have BBQ Pirate's Booty. I wish they sold more of what I needed, so that I would never have to go to a large grocery store!
this corner market is essential to the Upper Noe neighborhood! go in the late afternoon, and see patrons loading up canvas grocery bags with fresh veggies, fine cheeses and Acme or Semmifreddi's bread (delivered daily!) An interesting array of teas, sauces, packaged goods and European-esque pantry staples. Not heavy on organics, but superior to the alternative- Safeway, four long blocks away.
It's how I like my produce: fresh, nearby, and surrounded by pushy affluent people in trendy glasses.
I've been shopping here since I was still in stroller, and I love that they recognize me. It's small, but packed with tasty fruits, veggies, and all kinds of other healthy items. I would still shop here if I had to drive across town.
Having this place down the street from my house makes me feel like I live in Europe. I can find a fantastic recipe at home and then get anything I need to cook it right from this tiny corner store. Every time I go in I'm amazed at how many different products they have, from basics like breakfast cereal and flour to fresh basil and imported cheeses. More than anything else, I appreciate the friendliness of the owners and cashiers . . . they're the best!
