We have been here twice, the first time I had the Oyster poboy...wow was there a lot of oysters in there..too much that it made me feel queasy afterward. The second time, I shared a chowder and seafood feast; the portion was very large as well. Although you get a lot for your money with this place, I think they over serve you with too much food.
Instead of feeling good after eating, I end up feeling sickly with the heaviness of the food in my belly.
The two times we visited the Grotto it was not busy so service was good.
I've always had good food here.
The service is on and off but we know that going in.
I don't hesitate to go order inside and I'm not afraid to just go up and pay my bill if they don't come pick it up. If you need help just flag someone down but don't whine about poor service when you know the service is poor.
It is a bit pricey but you get what you pay for.
I have been coming here since I was a little kid so I tend to overlook the horrible service and dirty table cloths/silverware (yes, I asked for clean silverware) considering the seafood is absolutely TO DIE FOR!! I am a huge seafood fan and this is one of my favorite places to go. Always fresh, always delicious.
We started with the fried calamari and oyster shooters. Calamari - delicious! Oyster shooters - not so delicious. I personally didn't care for the sauce. Each of us ordered the pan-fried snapper. I loved it. My friend...not so much. Her words..."I like my fish with a little flavor". Now, what always keeps me coming back is the clam chowder. Yum yum yum!! Probably the second best clam chowder I have ever had, first being Grandma's special homemade clam chowder of course. ;)
Sat outside in the wonderful sunshine, listened to the waterfall and country music in the background. Sounds serene doesn't it? Well, the Grotto is located on the corner of First St. and D Avenue which is a VERY busy 4-way stop. So, needless to say, not very quiet and serene. Lots of trucks/motorcycles, honking, exhaust, etc.
Definitely not high class, prices are a little high, indoor seating is cramped. But I do enjoy the great food and laid back feel of the place. So, if you enjoy seafood as much as I do, give it a shot.
Oyster shooters!!! Yum Yum Yum, oysters rockefeller, pan fried oysters, oyster stew, - just call me Bubba Gump oyster style!! There is nothing like sharing shooters with a friend. Me likes seafood and although the service is crap (why I give AOK), the food is good and worth the time it takes to wait for it. I have always enjoyed curing my seafood craving by coming here and they did it again. My friend & I split the seafood medley (great for couples), which was worth it.....The food is pricey, but....fresh and yummy.
So from the looks of this place, and from what people said, it was suppose to be fantastic. It was just okay. Won't be back.
The food isn't bad, and some of it can be good. The scallops are quite tasty. The fish and chips, so-so. Fries, yuck. But I agree with other reviewers--they are incredibly disorganized. Often out of food, and one time we spent half an hour waiting for someone to fill the soft drink dispenser. The waitresses seem to have no idea whose table they are serving so you just end up having to walk up to the counter to get anything. And don't get me started with the parking situation. So you start off frustrated and it never gets better. It's just not worth going there.
I love this place. I walked in, looked around at the pirate decor and thought, yep this is where I want to eat. I grew up in Snohomish but hadn't been back for at least five years. Not much has changed. It is still a sleepy little town and as such, you can't waltz in expecting big city service. There was no one there to great my partner and I so went up to the kitchen counter. The two young guys behind the counter gave us menus. There was some confusion when we tried to order from them but soon after the waitress arrived carrying milkshakes from the soda shop across the street. That is the kind of town this is. Anyway, she was very sweet and made sure the cooks had our order down correctly. We ordered the Half Captain which is fish and chips and one of everything. EVERYTHING. Friend oysters, clams, calamari, salmon, and a few others. The seafood was very fresh and tasty. They could really step it up a notch with their french fries, but other than that it was a great deal.
When Chucks first opened way back in the day it was really good. I have been there maybe 2 or 3 times in the last 3 years and each time there we say we will never go back. It's pricey, not very good, the service is horrible and it's just down right dirty. The last time The Hubs and I were there we made a promise to each other that we would NEVER RETURN.
1 week ago. Sunday late afternoon and hot out with one big table outside full (about 6 people) all other tables open. We walked up and stood there not really knowing what we should do. Seat ourselves or wait. No signs with instruction and wait staff was busy talking to other people standing around. Finally after about 5 minutes one of the young girls with the very low cut t-shirt and push up bra said "sit anywhere" OK, we can do that. Lets see........which dirty table should we sit at??? So we sat down. We were there about 15- 20 minutes and finally I asked one of the scantly dressed waitstaff wondering around if we needed to go inside to order. She said "oh nobody has waited on you?" UUUUUUUHHHHHMMMMMMM no you were standing there when the other girl said take a seat anywhere. This annoys me! Wait staff 101! Know who just walked in and where they went .
So we are sitting there at our dirty table looking at food all over the ground wondering if this was a good choice or not. While sitting there with plenty of time to asses the filth we also notice a guy in the middle of the seating area with no shirt on, super hairy, looks like he just got off work at the dirt farm standing and chatting with a couple people. I'm thinking OK, they are getting ready to go, that's good. It's really a gross sight while waiting at a resturant.
We finally get our drinks and the table wiped off. Now for the order............"oh we are out of that" "oh we don't have that today" We finally asked "what do you have?" Fish and Chips was about our only choice. Why don't you call it Chuck's Fish and Chips???? We were told that a soccer tournament was in town that weekend and they were out of everything. UUUUUUUUHHHHHHHMMMMMM Restaurant 101 again............find out what's going on in your community and order accordingly!
So we are waiting for our order, also waiting for my brother to join us. He was meeting us there to drop off something but we don't' know if he is eating or not so we ordered. While waiting The Hubs and I noticed that dirty no shirt guy was gone but then we saw him walk out of the kitchen and starting to clean tables. ARE YOU KIDDING???? An employee with no shirt??? PLEASE! YUCK! It's bad enough that I'm looking at the wait staffs boobs and bellies now this??? We should have gotten up and left at that point. My brother gets there walks up and is stopped by scantly dressed waitress and she says "you can't sit down we are taking to go orders only" He told her he was meeting us and proceeded to set down. SHE NEVER once came over and asked him if he wanted anything. Not even something to drink. RUDE
We got our fish and chips. They were pricey, mediocre, and not worth the trip. We ate and asked for our tab so we could pay and go. We were told by the waitress "I gave it to you" We told her she didn't give it to us that's why we were asking for it. She proceeded to stand there and argue with us and looked on the ground and under the table. Finally she left and came back and said "oh I found it in my pocket"
To sum it up........If you are looking to get pissed off, annoyed, be treated poorly, grossed out , have mediocre to poor food and pay out the nose.............you should go to Chucks. If that's not what your looking for you should find some where else to go.
Would have gotten 4 stars if the service hadn't been completely wretched. My date and I sat outside for a half hour before our order was taken. There were 2 waitresses and there were about 7 tables of patrons so... not really so much mission impossible. But the scallops were awesome once i got them, and the salad was decent as well. little watery, but still good. pricey yeah, but it's pretty decent seafood. Date had fish and chips. The chips were the crinkle cut frozen little bitches you get in the freezer section. I deliberately changed my side order to the salad after seeing them come out for another table. Glad i did. There were little shrimps on the salad. Little shrimps are good.
This place is really over priced! But if your willing to overlook that detail it's fun to grab a bit after a long hard day of antiquing. I personally would only eat here in the summer, as the inside is dirty and cramped.
Chuck's is a friendly place. The fish and chips is one of the better values, get the large and share with a friend. 6 pieces with lots of chips for 16 dollars. The chips could be a bit better as RJ mentions but the service is fast and friendly. We'd go back more often if the inside of restaurant was a bit spiffier.
Yup...its a bit pricy, but honestly I've never been to a seafood joint that is low dollar. Chuck makes a damn good chowder. Excellent. The fish and chips is top shelf. He needs to work on the "chips" part of the meal though. Frozen types. Kind of mushy and occasionally a bit uncooked. It seems when Chuck is cooking the end result is a much better. Good salads too. CHucks puts out a decent menu and if you can get by the fact that you're sitting in an old former gas station eating a 50 buck dinner-for-two then you'll walk away pleased. Its a seafood greasy spoon,. No candles, white linen or fine crystal..but sanitary and very good eatin'.... Although the floors could use a mopping once in a while. Live outdoor music during the summer too. Chuck likes a party.
This is a very original restaurant. Converted from an old gas station this is not just a place to dine, but also a place to purchase fresh seafood. Their prices are a little steep, however, the portions are a pretty good size and the seafood is REALLY fresh. I think its defiantly worth the price.
