What really ceases to amaze me is the attitude that people have about this museum: "It can't be THAT great... its in Norfolk!"
That is, until they actually go: "WOW!!! Its like being in NYC or Paris!!!"
What many people don't understand is that, while the Chrysler is a smaller museum in a smaller city, it has a collection that is envied around the world. It loans out pieces year-round to museum around the world. And beyond that, where else can you see 4,000 year-old Egyptian artifacts, Tiffany glass, and modern art all under the same roof? It gets even better - as of September 2009, the museum is now FREE!! Not just on Wednesdays anymore!! You no longer have any excuse NOT to go.
The Chrysler also has exhibits that change throughout the year. They range from photography exhibitions by local artists to paintings from around the world. So go to the Chrysler. Go again in six months. Go every time there is a new exhibit you want to see. Go when you feel like taking a quiet afternoon to walk and think. And while there may no longer be an admission fee, they still have a donation box. **hint hint**
The only bad thing about this museum is that is probably has too much to see in one day, and that is not really a bad thing now is it.
I've been coming here for years, and keep coming back because it never gets old, in part thanks to their rotation of exhibits.
I have seen them setting up for wedding here, and I bet it was a nice ceremony.
Check it out!

This museum is a jewel! It took me 3 hours to explore every wing and floor in this grandly massive building. With over 30,000 objects and collections spanning more than 5000 years of history, you do need to kill a full day here in order to see everything.
My favorite is the Impressionist Gallery which displayed works by Monet, Degas, Renoir, Rodin, and Cezanne. I was at first disturbed by the lack of glass panels protecting these paintings from random vandals, but I'm glad I had the opportunity to view these artworks so up close. I couldn't have done this at the Metropolitan, Smithsonian, the Getty Center, or the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
I fell in love with the cafe on the first floor. It looked so romantic & cozy I decided to have lunch there myself. The menu has a fine selection of tasty gourmet sandwiches, salads, soups, pastas and desserts. The best time to go is on a weekday afternoon when it's empty and quiet.
This museum is gorgeous. I love the open courtyard that invites me into the collections. Be sure to walk through the entire museum your first time, because there is a gem at one of the back rooms upstairs. A bust of the savior carved out of marble by Bernini when he eighty years old will take your breath away! Other favorites include Frederick Childe Hassam's "At the Florist," Franz Kline's Zinc Yellow, and John George Brown's "Waiting for William."

We had our wedding here and it was fantastic, very old Norfolk. The staff is friendly but the rules for weddings get a little tight. Other fun things are their Thursday night parties in the summer and winter, Cool it and Warm it. Great mix of art here.
I love this museum for the arts. The museum has so many neat alternative arts, the Egyptian collections, the glass art, and many others. If you have nothing else to do in the Hampton Roads, treat yourself a day at this museum, then have a dinner on Colley Ave.
Beautiful place and an hour is not enough time to see everything. I like how they have a little bit of everything from Egyptian to glass exhibits. And there are rotating exhibits. I wish I could go back. My brother who lives in Norfolk says he is going to go there regularly now that he knows about it.
We are so lucky to have a museum like this in Norfolk. The courtyard is beautiful, with a fragrant garden in the spring. There are tons of amazing pieces inside as well. Be sure to see the Tiffany glass, the Andy Warhol stuff, I love the African masks and the Egyptian room as well. My favorite piece has to be the Diebenkorn.
My favorite place to play hooky. Wednesdays allows for the frugally minded to enjoy Hampton Roads largest art collection. Wednesday nights are for jazz lovers. The museum is a great date. Just on the edge of Ghent, it's minutes from downtown. Go on Wednesday for free... if you're not impressed, you've lost nothing. If you are, leave a donation.
