With so many good places to eat in Dover we neglected Third Street Grille for at least 2 years. But recently we came back (mostly to verify our previous impression).
Lemme tell you: it got ever better with time. Nice place, very good food, friendly service. And in opposite to my 2008 remark (too few customers) it was 2/3 full on a regular mid-week night. I was pleasantly surprised. Maybe it's not quite good to recommend it for special occassion dinner, but for everything else it's just perfect.
We will sure make next visit much sooner than 2 years, I guarantee.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I'm downgrading my review. I've been to Christopher's a couple of times lately and often the food is just not up to snuff. The pasta is overcooked or the chicken piccata tastes flat and has like six capers on it. It's still a decent enough place and I like the atmosphere but the food is just okay. If they were in Boston or New York, I'd have to give them no more than 2 stars but there are only so many place to eat in Dover, NH.

I have been a fan of Christophers for a few years. I love it there. I have been very happy with the servers, and the menu. No matter what I' in the mood for, I can always find something I like. Their mac & cheese is wonderful, especially if you ask for it extra cripsy on top, the steak is seasoned perfectly and cooked just how you ask, (even for my mom - who ordered it well done). My husband and I enjoy the french onion soup (it beat the one we tasted at the Ritz), especially on a cold night. They have the best french fries in Dover and wait until you taste the warm bread with special flavored butters.
I love good food and this place always meets our expectations. -

A couple of weeks ago we stopped in at Christopher's for dinner. We had become regulars there and have always enjoyed the food, the staff and surroundings. But on this particular night let's just say, I hope it was simply an off night
The restaurant was not busy on that particular night, yet it was almost 15 minutes before we were greeted and offered a seat. We asked for a table in the bar that was empty, but needed to be cleared after the prior guests. The staffer indicated he would clear it for us, then disappeared into the kitchen not to be seen again. He was clearly annoyed as he left... no, he was rude. We finally moved to hover over the table as more people were coming in behind us and we did no want to loose the table. It was another 10 minutes before the bar tender finally came over and cleared the table. In all it was somewhere between 20 to 25 minutes before we were finally able to be seated. Again, the staffer never came back by us again.
There were other things about this particular experience that bother me, but in fairness it could be that I was simply annoyed from the poor behavior and customer service to open, and simply this soured me for the entire meal.
As I said, we have been there many times and had many wonderful meals there. We are quite familiar with most of the staff. Many recognize us and we know many of them by name. I know this particular waiter by name. However, I won't mentioned it here. Suffice it to say that was as poorly as I have ever been treated at a restaurant. Hopefully it was just an off night, but I think we will give Christopher's a break for a while. Too bad. -

Does Christopher's sound good on paper, or from a first glance at the menu? Absolutely. Does the actual food or service meet those first glance expectations? Not a chance.
I keep trying to give Christopher's another go. The location is convenient, and the ambiance is very nice. I have friends who will take a date there, or go there for special occasions for dinner. And on their recommendation, I go back, and am always disappointed. My mother and her friends are big fans of the portabella mushroom sandwich, which has always looked good when I've seen it ordered. I've just recently branched out into mushrooms, so maybe I'll give them one last try.
The first time I ever ate here, I got take out for lunch, a cup of their clam chowder with a tuna melt on a croissant. The tuna melt wasn't bad, pretty good in fact, but my chowder came with someone's very longggg hair mixed in, making the whole thing rather unappetizing. Upon bringing my take out BACK because of this, instead of offering to refund me for the product, they simply gave me another cup of chowder, which happened to be the last thing I wanted at the time.
I've returned for dinner and lunch on other occasions, and have always found the hosts and waitstaff a little on the condescending side. Maybe it's because I'm a t-shirt and jeans kind of girl, and it might be helpful to be a wee bit more dressed up when you go in, but just because I'm wearing jeans doesn't mean I don't have the money to drop on a nice dinner. I appreciate good food, but I think Christopher's thinks a little too highly of itself for the product that they put out. -

We went here the other night and we had a great meal. You can either sit in the dining room or the lounge. We went in the dining room. The lounge had cafe-like seating and was nearby the bar. The lighting was very nice and the tables are spread out far enough that you're not eavesdropping on people's conversations--made for a nice date.
I ordered the Steak Diane and it was really, really edible. The sauce was a little bit salty, but I ate it anyway. My fiancee kept trying to steal some of my gravy. GET YOUR OWN. The funny thing is I told him to order that in the first place but he didn't listen.
Our waitress was nice, polite and attentive. She asked if I wanted more bread, and with a sheepish grin and my mouth full of bread, I nodded yes. I couldn't help it--there was this strawberry cream cheese like spread and it was delicious.
Just be careful on that step on your way out....you'll kill yourself!
Oh, and the parking lot across the street was free after 5 or 6 PM, I can't remember which. -

Dover, NH
An excellent restaurant in a town where it can sometimes be challenging to find a nice, sit-down dinner place with a little character without paying out to ears for the pretense that sometimes comes with it. Their filet mignon is always cooked just the way you ask, and has never failed to be smooth, buttery, and fantastic accompanied with onions & mushrooms and their chunky mashed potatoes. The servers are always friendly, attentive, and honest if there is going to be a glitch.
A definite go-to spot for a nice, honest meal. -

I'm impressed at how Christopher's has managed to substantially differentiate itself from the Seacoast restaurant crowd by filling its menu with just slightly tweaked restaurant fare. Everyone has chicken...but with pecans or boursin? That's pretty cool! The food has been consistently good; a minor annoyance is that their beer list can get out of sync with their taps. Prices and service don't detract.
The dining room is hidden from view on the street; it's a lot bigger than it looks. -

My Boyfriend I have now been to Christophers on two Saturday evenings. The first evening we got there with only about 30 minutes until they stopped serving, our waitress was so sweet and did not rush us at all. Even though I'm sure she was ready to go. We both ordered from the grilled seafood portion of the menu and were very pleasantly surprised by the larger than average portions! There were 4 scallops per skewer (2 skewers) fresh veggies and hand cut sweet potato fries, unlike I've ever had. The food was delicious! We went back this past Saturday, our very sweet waitress was there again and remembered us! We again got the calamari and then split the grilled shrimp and the grilled scallops. All of which were amazing! This place is quickly becoming a favorite!

Christopher's holds a special place in my heart as a favorite local restaurant in Downtown Dover. Service at lunch has been quick but non "rushed" making it a great place for a quite and well done business luncheon. The dinner options are wonderful with attentive service.
The menu is very broad in its selection and I've yet to try many items but the dozen or so times I've been has always resulted in me being very pleased. The price range is very reasonable for the quality, originality and presentation of the food. Since price is sometimes a relevant matter, I will say that this is to be viewed as a fine dining establishment with a comfortable environment and moderate price. An extremely good value.
My only criticism of Christopher's to date is one that can be easily remedied by the time that many of you may read this. That is, I feel that the wine list can use a better selection in order to truly complement the uniqueness and quality of this restaurant's wonderful offering -

Overall, Christopher's was a good place. Right off the bat, the server told us there was going to be a twenty minute wait before they even took our order (which was true, but in their defense, there was a party in the main dining room) but they were very courteous and kept letting us know that they were going to be with us shortly. Once the food came, it was delicious and decent sizes.
Only thing I was a big fan of was the fact that I asked for three refills on my Iced Tea and it wasn't until I got the bill that I saw they charged me per glass... Other than that, great place! -

A decent place to eat in Dover. This is not to be taken lightly because there are VERY few decent places to eat here. The menu is not large, but that's usually a good sign as they do what they do very well. If you want the clam chowder, be warned, it is thick and there seems to be a lot of bacon grease in it. It is not white, but grey. Also, I have developed a strange affinity for it. The steaks here have always been cooked exactly to order and are generously cut. They need larger glasses for sodas and iced tea, but that's not much to quibble about. If you are hungry and in Dover, you won't do much better than Third Street. You can, however, do a lot worse.

I loved this place. We went there for drinks last weekend and we decided to come back for dinner. FIrst off, they have a great martini list, which my wife certainly enjoyed. The place looks class, but not pretentious. The bartender and waitstaff were friendly. So we came back with her parents for dinner. Everything was reasonably priced and the quality of the food was fantastic. My steak was cooked perfectly. Others at the table ordered fish and had no complaints (which sometimes is just as good as praise). The side items were great and everything was presented well. You can tell they use fresh ingredients and actually take pride in their food. I'll definitely be going back when I'm in the area again.

Fine food at a reasonable price. From their online menu, I was expecting steak and seafood. They had that and more. My family enjoyed their steaks and seafood; I enjoyed a well-prepared beef stroganoff. The wine list has variety and is well priced. The servings err comfortably on the side of plenty, not so much that everyone took home a doggy bag, but more than most of us could eat. The service is friendly and efficient and the surroundings are attractive. It's a place I would happily return to.

We love Christopher's. The grilled salmon is my husband's favorite and I love the pan seared scallops. The bruchetta is a great app. Decent beer selection (some off season) and good service. The reasonable prices, casual, but nice atmosphere keep us going back.

Another great addition to Dover. I was happy when it replaced the prior BBQ joint. Menu is nice offering different choices then you would usually find in a Dover eatery.

Food is always good, beer selection is great. Service is usually terrible (slow and forgetful). It doesn't stop me from going there, but I always go in knowing that I'll have to ask 3x for a beer, or wait 20 minutes for someone to remember to take my order. This is for the bar side only; have never eaten in the dining room.
