A UVA classic and definitely one of my fav's. I'm SO glad they have the new location on the Corner (although, I totally found it worth it to make the trek downtown for a good slice :). I do NOT do the pizza thing... or the burgers thing, or anything else on the Corner, for that matter, besides here and Basil. This is good pizza. It's sooo far from authentic, it's crazy, but they found a niche and they are workin it!
The main reason I like this place is because you get flavor and nutrition without feeling weighed down because your pizza is more crust than anything else. They have a nice thin crust and come with a wide variety of toppings from fresh basil and fresh mozzarella to pesto, artichokes, and even avocado. This place is great and will always bring back great memories :)
Clean, great location, great prices, and fast, even when there's long lines
Docking one star because sometimes you have to add some extra umph with garlic or hot peppers, but it's never gross and tomato-ey sweet like most pizza joints and never ever greasy.
Man... I spend four years at UVA and never tried this place. Boy! I sure did miss out on some good pizza. I tried mushroom pizza, pizza with ground beef and bacon, and pizza with basil, mozzerella, and tomatoes. All were great. Thin, crispy crust and fresh ingredients.
I was really sad to see how Downtown has changed. A lot of restaurants have moved out. I do not know how I feel about the more expensive restaurants taking the places of the mom and pop places. I am glad that Christians is still around.
Even though I haven't eaten here in 2 years, Christian's is the best pizza I've ever had, period. Too bad it's a 9 hour drive from my home. I have dreams about these pies.
Ravioli with pesto and spicy chicken on a crispy thin crust with a hint of corn meal hit the spot at Christian's on the mall last night. Four stars for quick friendly service, clever toppings, and great prices. Five stars if the toppings had been fresher. I'll definitely go back!
Located smack-dab in the middle of the downtown mall, Christian's was a nice find to satisfy that ever pestering hunger craving I perpetually possess. The pies are displayed quite invitingly at eye level -- well for a hobbit. Great marketing scheme nonetheless.
I found these beautiful slices to be all right. Nothing spectacular but decent. We ordered the buffalo chicken, spinach and sausage, sausage and pepperoni and sun-dried tomato and artichoke slices. They were good but the buffalo chicken didn't exactly taste like we'd expect. It was just...different. The crust, however, was absolutely tasty! Thin and really crisp. That was perhaps the highlight.
The slices were a bit pricy -- between $3 up to $4 a slice. They were average sized slices, but I am comparing them to a NYC slice where they're monstrous in size for the same price.
This is not the best pizza around I imagine. But when you're constantly hungry like me and needing to satisfy that craving, this place will do.
Stellar location, clean as a whistle and swift with their delish pies, Christian's really exceeded my expecations for a pizza place with such proximity to a college campus.
Loved the variety of pies you can select from by the slice (I'd say there were at least 10 options warm and ready to go- clearly I got a meaty one and a veggie) and they fire up a 1/2 and 1/2 large pizza rather quickly, too. Yum and yes.
Excellent slice of pepperoni pizza. Thin crust, great sauce.
So many pretty pizzas! Colorful and yummy. Choices are abundant and it usually takes me a couple minutes of me pressing my face close to the glass to figure out what I want. They are always patient as I decide. I love the fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil, and the avocado one is quite delish too.
It may seem chaotic at times with the long lines but I've never waited more than 10 minutes to get through the line. They opened a Christian's on the corner which has the same pizza but somehow just isn't as good as the one on the downtown mall. The downtown mall displays the pizzas oh-so-prettily which always makes me want to eat a whole pizza. But fortunately or unfortunately, one slice is always big enough to fill me up.
This was the only place my dad wanted to go every time he came to pick me up or drop me off at school. Awesome variety of pizzas by the slice - and it's cheap, to boot. Lines move quickly, and seating is rarely a problem. Best pizza in Charlottesville, hands-down.
I've lived in a lot of places in the US and abroad. While nothing compares to the authentic Italian pizzas I had during my two and a half month stay in northern Italy, Christian's is very good. Much better than the delivery chains (Papa John's, Pizza Hut and Domino's) with a better variety. My favorite is the avocado, feta and tomato, but I also like their others, like chicken parmesan.
Generous, fresh toppings, crispy crusts, sauce that enhances rather than overwhelms the flavors of the toppings, fair prices and great taste. Christian's is my pizza parlor of choice in Charlottesville, VA. We usually frequent the Hollymead location, which doesn't have outdoor seating, but outdoor seating is available at the Downtown Mall location.
Christian's, my favorite Cville pizzeria, ended up being my favorite lunch+study place during a busy final semester.
I like Christian's for a number of reasons. Location: It's right on the Downtown Mall, which is my favorite place in Charlottesville. Décor: It looks really nice, lots of light wood and flyers advertising cool stuff coming to town. Beer: They offer a decent selection of bottled beer (domestic and imported) at pretty low prices. Service: The service is adequate; the lines can get long but they move quickly. Layout: A patio out front, and an enclosed foyer creates little nooks to the left and right which are semi-private. You can always find a place to sit.
In fact, if there's one thing about this place that's not quite up to par, it's the pizza. Sure, the slices are big and cheap, but they're not great. I think a lot of people are enamored of the gourmet specialty slices, but a first-rate pizza place needs to make a plain slice that's first-rate, and Christian's doesn't deliver. I like thin-crust pizza, but Christian's takes it too far: The slices are super thin, without enough sauce or cheese. There's nothing to sink your teeth into. I don't DISLIKE the pizza; it's fine - just nothing special.
Christian's is a solid 4-star pizzeria, not five. I've met people who've gone nearly breathless trying to convince me that Christian's is the best thing ever -- and I mean, it's good pizza, but it's not manna from heaven, folks. Calm yourselves.
It's pretty hard to find an open seat during prime dining hours, the line can grow to fairly long lengths, and it's a cash-only kinda place... so get ready, or prepare to make a detour at the dumpling place next door instead.
So many choices, all are delicious. Best pizza in Charlottesville.
Christian's is good. Their pizza has flavor and it's also located smack dab in the middle of the downtown mall, which makes it all that more appealing. [I prefer the Mellow Mushroom, though.]
One of the kind of annoying things is that they don't take credit, so bring cash. [As someone who rarely carries cash this can be a hindrance.]
And here is the other reason I like Christian's: http://www.flickr.com/....
It's pretty.
Here's the deal: Christian's is delicious. It just is.
Are Luigi and Giuseppe in the back of Christian's exercising their birthright to deftly toss and twirl a pie to perfection and artfully smear delicious goodness atop its supple surface? Not so much. If you're a pizza purist, Christian's counter of heretical pies may elicit a scoff and a raised eyebrow or two. I must admit, I have a tendency to snob it up when it comes to food that ought to be respected as traditional in nature. But I'm growing, folks, and Christian's had me at avocado.
I like the pizza they have some very interesting slices
A well lit and flashy joint in the heart of the Main St, Christian's Pizza is known for its imaginative pizza toppings, large portions, and hearty calzones.
Then I stepped inside to see for myself.
The hype did not let me down at all. Sure, the pizza slices were large and terribly greasy but they were tasty and that's what matters most to me. To get the full experience, I sampled their Tomato Basil, Pepperoni, and their Steak Calzone. Nothing was overwhelming, the red meat wasn't too gristly, and the service was standard (i.e. efficient and polite enough) for the industry.
Say what you will about other unique Pizza establishments along the east coast and throughout the so-called Pizza Meccas of America. Christians has Charlottesville's gourmet pizza market covered nicely.
Yeah, I feel ya. But avoid the sausage calzone... 2 words: gristle fest.
But, if i crave a slice, i head to Casella's.
Doesn't hold a cnadle to Escape from New York on Haight back home... But altogether, a decent slice shop...
Big selection of pies to choose from, creative toppings (avocado!), cheap price, quick-moving lines, great place for dog-lovin folks to gnosh with pooch in tow (on the patio). Place seems clean and kept in good repair.
They do seem to have a tendency to over-crisp your slice, though. Other than that, it's all gravy.
a lot of diff choices here. the pizza is really good and there's no where else where you can get really good slices like this. i think i went here every time i was on the downtown mall, which might help to explain the good old freshman 15
Having lived in big cities (NYC, SF) where you can find some of the best Pizza out there, I have to say this place is really good. I'm madly, deeply, truly in love with Christian's Pizza.
This joint has the best pizza in town. I love the avocado & tomato pizza. This crust is crunchy, and the cheese isn't too greasy. I frequent it because it's close and good.
Christian's has lovely sweet tea and an astounding variety of pizzas. The slices are huge, and the toppings include everything under the sun. I can't remember if they have both deep dish and thin crust, but I do highly recommend the thin crust ones.
This pizza place on the Ped Mall totally reminded me of Antonio's in Amherst, with inventive toppings, including avocado and constantly rotating, fresh new 'za's that were all tantalizing. The East Coast has superior pizza. Period. The crust was just right, though the sausage was a little on the fatty side, and when you have a fountain you should give refills! Would be hands down the best pizza in San Fran.
Pretty good pizza with lots of topping choices and creative combos that seem to work. I really like their thin crust
