Bellflower, CA
Chris & Pitts occupies a sweet spot in the price/quality matrix. Generous portions of meat, overfilling quantities of average-to-really-good sides, in an unpretentious atmosphere, at unpretentious prices.
This is my favorite Friday night gluttony. The type of meal you get the night BEFORE you start your diet. The added bonus? Bones for the dogs! They love me for it. The Porterhouse is HUGE and has always been perfect. The ribs are large as ribs go, sometimes a few on a rack were a bit overdone but overall good.
There is a huge back room; I've never had to wait for a table. Huge parking lot in back too. In front, there is a fan blowing the kitchen's hickory smoke goodness into the parking lot. If this is a trick to get your stomach rumbling, it is very effective. Good for families and casual dates; you should have the sense to not wear really nice clothes to a BBQ place. They don't skimp on the napkins here.
I'm sorry to see that some of their restaurants have closed; I will be distressed if this one is ever gone. Keep doing what you're doing, Chris & Pitts. -
Review from Julie L.
Come here for the meat, don't expect anything else from the interior of the restaurant, the sides and the service and you'll come out a happy camper. =)
Meat is a definite 4 stars fo' realz! Everything else was just part of the experience before you can actually eat the meat.
I came here to meet an old coworker on a Friday night. This place was poppin'! We had about a 15-20 minute wait for a party of 4. The interior is no frills. It reminded me of a ol' skool diner with big booths, burgundy plastic cushions, and old wood paneling. There is a big room in the back that seems like it is cafeteria style seating. Like my bf says, it has a "trucker stop" atmosphere. DON'T wear anything nice, this isn't the place for it. :P
The menu is quite extensive. They have a lot of different options, from steaks, ribs, chicken, sandwiches, appetizers, soups, etc. I could look at it for hours, especially since they have huge pictures of what you may get. They also have daily specials everyday for about $7.95. My bf and I split the deluxe combo for two ($32.95) and the portions here are GINORMOUS. The combo was like a 3 course meal. Very worth the price! We didn't even know it came with dessert! Each one of us could choose an appetizer, share the entree (with our own separate sides), and then choose a separate dessert. For the appetizer we got a salad and soup (chicken and rice), our entrees came with a full rack of baby back ribs and half a chicken, and for dessert we chose an ice cream sundae and the cheesecake.
Meat: DELICIOUS. The ribs had tons of meat on it and was nice and tender. It was smothered in sauce so roll up your sleeves and make sure you have a lot of napkins! The chicken was good too, but I preferred the ribs. The chicken wasn't as moist. The sauce was sweet and tangy. Everything was flavored well.
Appetizer: The soup was surprisingly good. We got the chicken and rice and it was tasty. Although I didn't see too much chicken. Salad was standard, like it came out of the bags you buy at the super market.
Sides: Fries were undercooked, limp, discolored and bland. :(
The baked beans and the corn was better. But wasn't too memorable.
Dessert: I'd skip it next time. The cheesecake was served to us frozen! And the sundae (I ordered strawberry) was just vanilla ice cream with strawberry syrup. I was hoping for strawberry ice cream.
Service wasn't too great. Our waitress got our drinks and then disappeared for a long time and we had to flag someone else down because we were ready to order. She passed by our table multiple times too and she didn't even bother to stop by. I wouldn't come here expecting great service next time. Just get your food and eat up! Small parking lot in the front, big lot in the back. This is a good option to go to if you want your bbq and nothing else.
Thanks Alex M. for your recommendation. =) -

Oh Chris and Pitts how I Love Thee!
My Husband and I tend to go every other Friday for the Specials, which are awesome!! I usually get the Top Sirloin Steak special and my Husband gets the Broasted Chicken Special...seriously the broasted chicken plate can feed both of us!
If your counting calories or watching what you eat, this place is not for you!
This place is truly a landmark and I really wouldn't know what to do if C&P were to close down...OMG, I don't even want to think about it! -

Great food, great portions, good price, friendly setting, plenty of parking, and sweet/helpful staff. This place is great to come on any special occasion or when you are just craving steak for a good price. Through your diet out the door when you first step into this marvelous place, you won't regret it ^_^

Yes I've had lots of BBQ lately but I was craving it again...afterall it has been a week or so since the 4th! LOL! Been here couple times now & both times loved the food. I had the BBQ Beef Ribs. I always feel like I'm a Flintstones cartoon when I eat there though lol. So big and juicy! Its finger licking good!!
Not a huge fan of BBQ sauce on top of ribs, my preference is more of a dry rub. Its the way I make 'em and my gf Pam does. FYI, hers are so good! Regardless, sauce or not, theirs is quite tasty :) Whole plate with baked potato is $17 so not bad, not for weekly consumption but great for once in a while indulgence. My bf had the NY Steak special w/beans and potato's for $15 and he said it was thick and juicy. He even had leftovers! My leftovers were still good the next day :)
The place leaves a lot to be desired (very old) but I think it just adds to the casual, comfy vibe you get when you walk in.
As a side note, I like their coke too. Not all restaurants know how to make good Coca Cola :) -

More 3 stars than 4, so I'll round down. Came here on a mission. Originally we were supposed to eat at the Anaheim location since we had gone to Disneyland that day. That's our usual flashy itinerary for out-of-town visitors. Disneyland, then Chris' and Pitt's for dinner. You gotta scrimp after all that you spend getting into D-land.
Much to our dismay, the Anaheim location is CLOSED! We took the extra 15 mile trek to Whittier and discovered that the two are pretty identical. Old interior. Sticky booths and chairs. Cheesy looking menus. We were stoked!!
Sat for about 15 minutes completely ignored. Pretended to look at the menu over and over again even though we all knew what we wanted. The waitresses could be heard whispering "Is that your table? That's not my table. Who's going to serve that table?" Sheesh, like we were the plague.
Enter Judy, the angelic waitress who saved the day and fed us! She was middle-aged and looked like she smoked at least a pack a day. Mumbling under her breath, "God damn it! Just help them already. What's the big deal?"...she blurted out a "Hi, I'm Judy." No smile. But I liked her anyway for actually acknowledging us. She threw down like 35 wet nap packets, 18 straws, and 50 napkins on our table, without regard to how many people were there (4 adults, 2 kids). She came back with Gigant-O cups of water and promptly took our orders.
The salad is what I look forward to the most. Iceberg lettuce and ranch with crushed saltine crackers. Pretty much what a 8 year old would make if you asked them to make you a salad. But, O Lord. That Ranch dressing is good. The t-bone steak, porterhouse, and prime rib that we ordered were all deliciously gluttonous and tender. Along with your meal comes your choice of potato and beans and a toasted french roll.
The kids' meals were a fantastic deal at 2.95 each. One ordered bbq chicken and the other spaghetti. With that, they each got a drink, a salad, beans, fries, and an ice cream for dessert. Even an adult wouldn't be able to finish that!
The food isn't the greatest, but decent considering the prices. And with lots of leftovers to take home, you'll feel like you came to the right place. -

You don't find them like this anymore. Best Pitt BBQ anywhere. Try the baby back ribs or BBQ Beef Sandwhich.
Slow cooking, well prepared using a good recipe makes the difference.
Affordable and very high quality too. -

I only gave them 3 stars because I had there Pork Chop Dinner the other white meat. The plate overall was o.k. but the Pork Chops were grilled right, cooked through, but lacked flavor was disappointed with the flavor. I still like them but will think twice before ordering this plate.

Best steak for the price anywhere!! You gotta get the "baseball steak" and get it butterflied. It's AWESOME! It's like $19.95 for an amazing steak with salad or soup and two sides and garlic bread. You can't beat it.
Or you can go to Ruths Chris and pay $200.00 for a steak that tastes like burnt butter and pay for your sides individually. And sit around a bunch of uptight A-holes.. what ever, it's you choice.
Try Chris' n' Pitt's!! -

I used to HATE steak.
Until I entered Chris and Pitts. This place is the shiznit! I always get the same new york steak meal. You get a platter of food that's impossible to finish on your own. You also get a bucket of ice tea (soda is available as well). It's a family friendly environment where anyone with some bad ass kids can have them cry and no one will bat an eye. (You know the ones I'm talking about!) This place is always full of people! They have truly captured the meat lover in me Foreva!
If you don't like chris n' pitts then you don't like real BBQ.
My only gripe: their chicken sucks!!!!!!! It's really dry and tastes just like wood. But if you like wood then you'll love their chicken. -

My BF's family has always said that this place was da bomb so we went for his mama's b-day to celebrate & so that I could see what all this talk was about.
Personally this place is OK. It's a bit run down & the service is eh ok. The food itself tastes pretty good but you leave feeling a bit unhealthy to say the least. They just pile the BBQ sauce on all things meat.
I might go back again but sadly Chris' and Pitt's is not da bomb for me. -

BBQ galore!! The food is great, but sometimes the service sucks! =[
If you love BBQ & steaks, you should come here!! I love the beef ribs & prime rib! super delicious! Ribs are never overcooked like most other places. The portions are huge, like for a caveman! I'm guessing the only reason why the service sucks is that it gets packed and the waitresses get swamped, but the food makes up for it! =D -
Review from Albert W.
Lots of food, low prices and so-so quality. Better than any of the chains like claim jumpers but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. Sauce is sweet and tangy. It's similar to Sweet Baby Rays but more watery. I'd go to Bludso if you want good bbq.

Review from Jackie B.
It's pretty basic barbecue. It's really nothing to write home about. But I'll probably go back just for the fun of it.
I ordered the baby back ribs with a baked potato. The potato was a little underdone and the ribs were kinda cold! How'd that happen?
I did like the blue cheese dressing, which other reviewers have remarked on. The salad was just the right size, too, considering the massive amounts of meat to come with the main course (for the average customer there). Also the sodas are gigantic.
What I'm going to go back there for, however, is just the spectacle of the place. My dad clued me in on the history of Chris and Pitt's on the drive there. Owned by a Greek guy in the days where almost all the burger joints in the area were owned by Greeks. There were more stores around, but they've since closed down (I'm thinking of the store in Downey). I like the big booths, the dark atmosphere, the older servers who've been there forever (probably), the funny gigantic menus.
All in all, it seems like a good place to go with the family.Listed in: What Can One Do In Whittier?…

Since I didn't eat any red meat, I have to say I found this place lacking.
The sides were alright, but nothing special, and certainly nothing delicious.
I'm sticking one extra star on my review because that blooming onion thing is not only delicious, but BRILLIANT!
They also gave me half a jar of salad dressing for a tiny salad. And a HUGE 1 liter cup of soda. Too much. too too much.
Won't be going back, i like my dining establishments to be a bit classier.Listed in: Thanks, but no thanks.

I was hoping Cris and Pitts was open while I was at the Firestone close by but they were closed. The last time I was here which was earlier this year I enjoyed some baby backs ribs and it was nice and savory, hmmm how I want some right now.
This place has been here for as long as I have come around. Not a fancy place at all but it serves up good meals for cheap. -

When i pass on to the afterlife i will ask where the nearest Greasy Pitts is... I love this place and have been coming here for many many years. Service is just OK but what would you expect for the price you pay? Kids can be kids and no one really cares and beef ribs with no added sauce rocks.....

My wife and I love this place. Steak & Rib dinner with a pitcher of beer hits the spot every time. They also have a great $7.95 dinnner special menu (Try the broasted chicken). Best BBQ in town! Oh, and don't forget the Onion Rings... Thank you C&P!

I love this place!! I've been coming here with my family since I was I child. I mean I was little baby eating Chris n Pitts steak while in a high chair. I can remember my dad giving me little pieces of steak and I would just suck the steak juices out (since I had no teeth). I've been there so much that the older waitresses remember me as a child!
Well as an adult, I still love the place. They have great steaks AND what I believe is the best blue cheese dressing EVER!!! You can't go wrong with their sirloin steak, baked potato, and salad with blue cheese all for under $10.00.
Now the atmosphere, a little old school and the area the restaurant is located not the best, but I've never had a problem. The waitresses are good, sometimes slow, but they tend to get really busy. If you are ever in the area give it try!
Tip: When/if asked where you like to be seated, ask to be seated up front. The seating in the back area seems to be a little slow.Listed in: Hole-n-the Wall Favorites!

Review from Sandy K.
I came here for lunch, the interior is nothing fancy to look at but the food is decent. I opted for the lunch special, a quarter of BBQ chicken and 1 pork rib. You also get your choice of one side and soup or salad.
The salad was OK, what made the salad was the thick blue cheese dressing. My chicken was OK but the pork rib was Flinstone size ginormous with a smoky flavor and really meaty. Fries are decent and I tried the BBQ beans which were tasty.
I would return here in the future and lunch is very reasonable! -

Vintage independent ...OOHHH YEAH! Its been here for years, but don't take it for granted because I was deflated driving by their Anaheim location and to see it gone, with a wretched for lease sign in window. It makes me feel right at home just knowing they are still churning out good food without corporate interference at the Whittier location.
Great Value, Good food, great portions, fresh crisp salad, homemade delicious dressing, nice variety in sides. Steaks are served in a hearty, rustic plate-wear reminiscent of the good ol wild west! Good time for sure. -

Dear Daddy, i write you, in spite of years of silence.
you cleaned up, found Jesus. things are good or so i hear.
this review, of eatings, awakens ancient feelings.
like mother, step-mother, your son is drowning in the flooood!!
It used to make me so proud. i used to sit up as tall as possible in those leather booths, so i could be grown up, like my dad. those huge plastic cups, tanked with Root Beer, so big it took two hands to move 'em. Massive, billboard-size Menu's, with tiny print, and pretty pictures. Dad taught me what a steak was. he showed me how to decipher the code. "New york" "Porterhouse" "Sirloin" "T-bone" "Baseball" "Prime rib" it all seemed like a bunch of mumbo-jumbo at first. as i was just a wee lad, dad would order for me. i would tug and chomp on my overcooked Sirloin with pride, and every once in a while dad would slip me a morsel of his bloody mass. as i grew, and no longer had to stretch to sit up high in those booths. i learned the ways of Beef. gone were the days of "well-done" replaced by a knowing response "Medium-Rare, Please". i had become well versed in the implication of the steak knife. it was almost a rite of passage, to finally be given the freedom to order my own steak. it was as if i was being given a final shove out of the nest, and time to fly.
Dad always called it "Pitts". he'd make an announcement, on special occasions when there was enough fund-age to consider going out to eat. he'd call upstairs to us boys and say "c'mon boys. we're going to Pitts". Steak was that little thing that made us feel like we were wealthy, even if only for one night. loud conversations were had. the resonate sound of my dads booming laughter. it's all still so fresh in my mind, even though the last time it happened was more than 15 years ago.
Bar B Que? what the hell was i thinking? this used to be THE place. there was no other!..of course, i was 11 at the time, and knew no better. i have a son of my own now, and i have taken steps to ensure he has no such delusions. however, i am not one to disturb tradition. so when my boy was all of 9 years old. we came to "Pitts" and had steak. wood-fired, served sizzling on a searing hot cast-iron plate. yes, there are lots of other hoity-toity places to get a "Better" steak. but i am here for my son, because i know how much it meant to me, with my dad.
in the years since, i have proudly watched my boy become more and more aware of his food. first taking little bites of my steak, then slowly weening off the A1 sauce. we come to Chris and Pitts because they have great steaks at prices that dont make me cringe. BBQ? yes, they have that too. im not going to say its phenomenal, but it gets the job done. the food is simple, hot, and timeless. who could ask for more?
this place gets 4 stars because it will always hold a place in my heart as a point of awakening in my food-loving life. i can look back at these humble beginnings, and know that i am now a better chef because of them. -

Whittier, CA
The best thing about having a delicious meal is having enough leftover for ANOTHER meal. I love two-fors. And Chris' & Pitt's gives you just that: two meals for the price of one.
I had the bbq chicken with garlic bread and mashed potatoes covered in gravy. Now normally, I'm not a gravy girl. And had I known they were going to smother them in gravy, I would have asked them not to. But I'm so so glad I didn't. The gravy is incredible! And poured over my chicken, mmmmmm.....
This is the only location that I've ever been to and it is so old school and cozy. I bet it hasn't been redecorated in decades but that's part of it's charm. The service was friendly and attentive.
Thanks to Chris' & Pitt's, I'm now a gravy girl. -

Chris' & Pitt's has always been a great place to have dinner with the family, especially if your hungry!
I cannot stop thinking about that crisp salad with saltines, and the so many great choices of dressing. They must be house-made because you will want to order them all-at-once.
A full dinner can get to be a reasonable price, but You get what you pay for. Tender Steak, Juicy Ribs (Hawaiian Style Too!), foil-wrapped baked potatoes and a Large Milk is a serious meal. For serious Men only.
All-day every-day specials and a drink means about $10 and your good to go. Two Sides and an Entree is more then enough food for me on most visits.
Lastly, a great deal on dinner for the kids. $2.95 for their meal and an awesome Ice Cream sundae deasert.
Did I mention the cold Milk? How about the Chocolate Milk?
Enjoy! -

This place is kind of a dive, but have always had great baby back & spare ribs and a very decent steaks, everything came with great service from my waitress. They have sweet old lady waitresses and a couple of young ones. I also had a pretty good char-broiled cheeseburger. I have had bbq at Robin's, Gus's, & Wood Ranch, considering the price I will go here any day of the week. Their blue cheese dressing on the salad kicks ass. BBQ is really for meat eating people not vegetarians. The only other BBQ is Famous Dave's in Long Beach - yeah you'll pay more.

This place es la bomba! Love this place, though there portions are big. They have great pork ribs! There beef ribs are pretty good as well. They have a great ground sirloin steak you have to have with grilled onions on top. Love there beans and garlic bread.
Usually go here once in a few since its by work, but I have to mentally prepare myself, since there portions are huge and so good, I usually finish all my plate. Then come back to work, and im in food coma. LOL
Actually this one, and the one in Bellflower are about the best ones Ive been to.
Usually all there entrees include two sides, salad, and garlic bread, so you'll have enuff eats. You could even share a plate. :) -

Holy Food Coma!
Chris' and Pitt's restaurant is down home BBQ cooking at it's finest. Decided to try this place with a guest that was from Texas. Evil me for bringing sand to the beach!
The Texan guest was down to give the place a try out and judging from the amount of food that he ate, I would say that he approved.
We were actually in a group of 8 people. We ordered 3 combo plates which were designated 2 people per plate. According to my guerilla math - 2 times 3 = 6. We had 8 people. 3 of the people out of the 8 eat like ravenous pigs (including myself).
Wait so according to my calculus, we ordered enough to feed 6, yet we had 8 people including 3 voracious bastards.
Doesn't sound like we would be satisfied - but our platoon couldn't even finish the dessert that we had no idea was included with the meal.
Included with the combo were some monster beef ribs, pork ribs, chicken breasts complimented by salad, baked beans, garlic bread, fries, corn on the cob, and yes the dessert that we couldn't finish off.
The meat slid off their respective bones like butter and their proprietary BBQ sauce had me rudely licking my fingers.
The combo cost $30 each - But each can honestly feed 4 fairly light eaters. Great bang for the buck, impressed a man from Texas, and caused our fearless group of 8 to become completely useless at work for the rest of the day. Grrrrrrreat! -

This place is interesting. Nothing special.
-Everything is very fatty and greasy.
-They like to give a ton of dressing so if you don't want soup salad you may want to ask for dressing on the side.
-The fries are pretty good and the onion flower was pretty good.
-BBQ chicken was cold and dry (not sure how that's possible)
-Ribs were pretty good
-BBQ Beef/Steak thing was super fatty and not great.
-Lots of "interesting" people there.
-Half the staff is friendly and quick, the other half look like they are on drugs and cell phones most of the time. (seemed like the younger skinner ones kinda sucked).
-They seem to only have a one person bathroom for both men and women (really weird for such a huge resturant).
-Good for large parties.
_Prices are decent. -

OK, I don't think Chris' and Pitt's deserves even three stars, but their ridiculous way of turning their name into a possessive might merit that extra half-star, which ends up getting rounded up to a full star.
I haven't been here since high school. I don't eat meat anymore, so I probably wouldn't like this place now. It's kind of dirty. Always was, always will be. The sauce is pretty good. One of my friends in high school loved this place.
Beyond that, I don't know what to tell you. Um, it's red meat? -

It was hailing yesterday at the Cabazon Outlets. I'm exhausted, cold and hungry. The boy and I are heading back and home and he pops the question. That question I've been longing to hear all day..."what do you feel like eating?" I look at him and say, "I want to eat somewhere cozy." He said, "Chris n Pitts" and I smiled.
I love Chris and Pitts. The service is perfect. It's always the same waitresses who have been working there for years and love it. The place itself is full of warm coziness and the smell of yummy bbq. The food is always great. Definitely get the half rack of ribs. Yes, the portions are huge but so what? It's not like I'm on a diet...oh wait. oops!! -

I am 60 years old and have been eating at Chris & Pitts (Downey, Whittier, & Bellflower) since I was about 5. I have had the prime rib, baseball steak, steak and ribs combo, steak and chicken combo, ham beef pork & ribs combo, spareribs dinner, baby-back rib dinner, and much more throughout the years. C&P is the best BBQ value in Southern Cal and always brings back childhood memories of my Dad, who loved the place as well. The sauce is the best around. I recently gave a bottle to a friend in Kona, without commenting about it. She responded that it was the BEST she had ever tasted. I then gave her a gallon I had bought at Smart & Final. I now live in Washington State, but go to C&P (at least once) every time I visit SoCal. Don't expect fancy, but on Friday and Saturday evenings, expect a wait in line.

So this place is a local favorite and many of my friends love going here, but not me. I've had better ribs at Apple bees if you want my opinion. Their BBQ sauce taste like an over powered tomato sauce and the baked beans look like they came straight out of a can. The location is pretty run down but I don't take a star away from that cause that is what a rib shack should be like. My biggest concern is all the hype for this place and no follow through. So go ahead and give it a shot and see if it suites your families taste.

My friend is totally going to hate me for this, but I don't like their food at all. I've only had it once, and it wasn't at their restaurant, so I can't say how all that is. I had it at the aforementioned friends' wedding... see her review below. (cringe at the thought that she's going to hate me).
I thought the BBQ sauce on the chicken was good, but the chicken was really dry and the rest of the food was too heavy. The potato salad was okay, but really lacking in flavor, the garlic bread was really my least favorite and I couldn't even finish the first bite, but the baked beans were ok. It's hard to mess baked beans though. It would have been good to have some veggie options. The people serving were really nice though!
Sonya, please don't hate me. I still loved the wedding! -

choices) and a baked potato. The soup of the day I chose was the chili. I was also told that the chocolate
milkshakes here were amazing, and they were. Order one.
The food isn't necessarily the best thing to put in your body, but that's not the reason you came to a BBQ place.
This place is all about food that tastes great. The decor is like hardcore 70's western, which I think makes it
unique. I noticed that a lot of people who reviewed did not like the way the place looks, but they were clean when
I went there and that is the biggest issue with me. If they're clean, they could look like they were from the
1800s for all I care.
The customer service here is probably the best I have ever seen in a restaurant in the Los Angeles area. My wife's
stepfather has been coming to this restaurant since he was a kid and the same people still take his order. They
even knew what he was going to order before he ordered it. That's what kind of place this is and I recommend it.
Come in, order what you want, relax and be happy.
Chris' and Pitt's made me a believer today.
