I used to come here a lot before I discovered Park's BBQ, but Chosun is definitely a wonderful choice for upscale korean BBQ.
The restaurant has a great setting, especially the outdoor seating. Great meat, my favorite dish off the menu has to be Galbee Jjim...it's SOOO good as an alternative to BBQ. Most of their Galbees are delicious, I also recommend the raw beef and the codfish soup!
4 stars because of the price... it's a little pricey for korean bbq, even if it's high-quality.
This is my favorite korean bbq restaurant in town. Known for the "old school" feel, the waitresses wear the traditional korean gowns while serving. Good side dishes, their meat is very well marinated, but the portions aren't large. If you're looking for plates and plates of meat, an all-you-can eat might be for you.
Oh, lunch specials are pretty good too!
Craving Korean BBQ
Hungry for some short ribs and marinated beef!
Obviously, this was the "chosen" one
Staff cook your meats for you
Upscale, modern, clean, indoor and outdoor grilling
Non-Koreans and Koreans alike come for a refined experience!
So last night my bro decided to treat us out to dinner!! Wooo hoo!! He's always craving k-bbq so of course we decided on Chosun! :) I've been here before and enjoyed the cooking and eating action!! Luckily traffic wasn't bad on the 10 fwy and we got there in about 30 mins! We found street parking around the neighborhood.
I LOVE...
- The indoor/outdoor seating and grilling tables
- How your clothes don't smell smoky after eating!!
- The staff: very attentive, changes the grill frequently and cooks the meat for you!!
- The 8 side dishes and the bowl of salad! mmmm
- When someone else is paying the bill :)
We ordered:
+ Chosun Galbee ($28.99): marinated short ribs... not much a fan =\
+ Bulgogi ($23.00): thin slices of marinated beef.. MY FAV! :D
+ Bosot Gui ($18.00): shitake mushrooms... it was ok. nothing exciting about mushrooms :(
+ Job Chae ($15.00): sweet potato noodles, beef, and veggies... YUM! :)
If you've never been here before...
* Free street parking after 6pm or Valet (not sure how much) will do
* Come early or expect to wait a bit, especially after 7pm
* If you're not with a big group, you might be sharing a table with another party. Long tables with grills on each end. It can seat about 8 people comfortably.
* Order your meat(s)... and the plates of meats can be kind of small. So you usually have to order at least 2+ to make it worth the visit. Staff will start the grill and cook the meats for you, but you might have to finish cooking the meats.
* Your bill can easily reach over $100 on just 4 dishes.
Thanks bro for dindin! :) It was delish!!! I want to try the rock cod soup and bibimbob next time!!!
First time i went here the food was so good; however, I forgot the name of the place and where it was. Finally, I went again last week; same friends too us. AGAIN, food and delicious. Had a lot of raspberry wine along with the food. So tasteful. Cold noodle dish and beef bulgogi are great together.
What can I say? Greatest Korean BBQ ever. Used to hit it up years ago in LA in their previous location. If anything, the food is better. The service is still friendly, waitresses understand English well but don't speak too much of it. If you love KBBQ, beware - you're never the same after CG.
Although my lovely girl and I had the namesake Galbee, I think the bulgogi is actually tastier if less tender. Therefore, we'll have to go back!
* Hey, haters: did you know? Korean BBQ doesn't have to be smoky, divey, or Korean-only to be good.
* The half outdoor/indoor seating is a real treat, especially in LA. But people smoke out there, so heads up.
* Get the kalbi. Use the bulgogi for filler only.
* Absolutely perfect panchan.
* If you're feeling really hungry, get a seafood pancake, cold noodle dish, or kimchee stew.
Since Koreatown is my sales territory I decided to try out different Korean BBQ spots while I have the chance to. This , by far, is my favorite.
1. Service is so good! Servers are so nice and helpful
2. I've tried a lot of their food (introduced to me by my Korean friends) and there is nothing on their menu that I don't like.
3. This is a 2 times a month lunch spot for me.
4. Quality!
You think being Korean, living in LA, I would have already been here eat that....BUT not the biggest fan of Korean BBQ! I finally had a taste of their meat last week...and I have to say it wasn't bad. The portions, in comparison to other restaurants, are small but it allows you not to overeat and the meat is actually savory...
BUT I give Chosun an A++ for not having me smell like a soy sauce, teriyaki and meat induced stench I always get at other restaurants, when leaving the joint. Maybe it was the advantage of being seated outside. They change the grill everytime a new meat dish comes out...which is nice as a charred grill will even induce more smoke which can make you smell like a BURNT soy sauce, teriyaki and meat.
And If i was to take a newbie to Korean BBQ I would take them here so I can ease them way into korean dishes as the staff can speak english and are polite.
This place is just my kind of place - strong ethnic food, beautiful surroundings (maybe too beautiful - I'm a simple guy), great decor, good portions, not too expensive. Why not 5 stars? I don't know, this is what I gave it preliminarily on my iphone before I actually filled out the review, and I guess the fact that I haven't been jonesing for the place in the 2 weeks since is a sign that it's only a 4 star joint.
Very good food, tasty, spicy, great variety, nice lunch menu. Really, it's good. Perhaps not great, but very good.
I got the galbee chicken, or something of the sort, but I had preferred spicy, not sweet. They insisted it's not done spicy, but they willingly brought me the hot paste that goes on the spicier food, so that solved that problem. My lunch partners got the spicy seafood soup, which was very good as well, and the bul kogi pork, which you can never go wrong with.
I really like the unlimited Korean appetizers they bring, especially the kim chee (I'm a big fan). There were other little sides that were great as well.
All in all, I've been here several times, and never had a bad experience. It's not the greatest Korean BBQ I've ever had, though, so it only gets 4 stars. But, you will never go wrong here. Sit out on the patio for a really nice experience
This was my first time in Koreatown so Anna L. took me to Chosun Galbee for lunch. I was so excited because I was looking forward to Korean bbq.
They have long booths where two parties can sit on either side. I ordered bulgogi - thin slices of marinated beef in their special soy sauce while Anna L. got the chicken bulgogi. The beef was just tender and flavorful. The lunch plate came with other accompaniments, most of which I couldn't finish. Anna L. ordered a plate of red leaf lettuce, both of us making a burrito with the meat, rice, noodles, and kimchi. The banchans were plentiful but I was hoping that they would have the bean sprouts. The kimchi was really good and the sweet, fermented rice drink nicely ended our meal.
Prices are reasonable for lunch and the service is pretty fast. In the bathroom, they have a mouth wash dispenser. I would suggest taking advantage of it especially if you've eaten the kimchi!
This has been a family staple over the years, usually when we have big family gatherings when everyone is in town and ready to grub.
It is unusually big and modern for a korean restaurant, but I guess that is why many people come here? Even non-Koreans.
I think the mouthwash in the bathroom is genuis! After a meal of korean bbq and kimchi, something has gotta tame that dragon breath that's impending... If you have had korean bbq, then you know EXACTLY what I am talking about. There will be no snuggling up and smooching for awhile, unless you are a gluten for punishment.
Jen S pretty much summed up the review for the food. Here was my two cents. Valet parking is a plus, especially in Ktown.
I just came back from having lunch with my sisters and her bf. We only came here because our favorite korean restaurant has shut its door. We were so disappointed. That was the only restaurant we went to that was consistently good. I suggested Chosun since neither of my sisters or her bf have been there. Now that I think about it, I have never gone back to this restaurant on my own. That says a lot....I don't really like the food that much here.
I've been to this restaurant several times and have never thought highly of this restaurant. Yes, the quality of the meat is good but taste wise, it's not that flavorful. I like my Korean BBQ meat either flavorful or accompanied with a great dipping sauce. It didn't fulfill any of those requirements. We ordered the marinated and non marinated galbee. We also ordered a dish of job chae (sweet potato noodle with beef and vegetables). I love to eat job chae. The job chae tasted pretty good. It was a bit oily and consisted of mostly onion. I was a bit disappointed by that. For $15, that was not worth it.
They do have great side dishes. We probably had ten side dishes. I liked their fish cake, rice, pancake, pickled radish or daikon, and potato salad. We refilled it several times. Soft drinks are not refillable.
It is a nice venue and service was very good. They're well coordinated with their ear pieces. The moment you request something, they get it to you right a way. They're on top of things. There's both indoor and outdoor dining. They have a couple of rooms to accommodate large group. Its more pricey than other Korean places ($29-$32 plus per plate of meat).

One of the best korean bbq in town!! Try the soju!
I could've sworn I'd already reviewed this place. It's just one of those restaurants that I've been coming to forever and ever and that has never once failed me. In over ten years, I have yet to find another Korean barbecue joint that clearly tops Chosun.
The food is excellent. The quality of the meat is absolutely prime, and the rice is the best you're going to get in Koreatown. Banchan is plentiful and top-notch, as are all the accompaniments for the barbecue. Don't be afraid to stray from the grilled meat either - the naengmyun, the haedupbap, and the bibimbap are also good choices.
I actually prefer going to Chosun for lunch. The value is hard to beat and the place is a lot more manageable than at dinner time. I tend to get either the kalbi or the dak bulgogi lunch set, both of which come with japchae, battered fish, salad, rolled omelette, glazed sweet potato, and half an orange. It's plenty of sides to an already plentiful amount of meat, and all of it is tasty. A refreshing cup of shikhye rounds out the meal.
Service is excellent, with all servers polite and efficient in their traditional Korean hanboks. The restaurant space is open and comfortable, not swank but very nice, and it's great for large parties. Valet can be a little disorganized at peak hours, but that's the only drawback I can really think of.
Overall, this is one of the best Korean restaurants in town, and one of the only restaurants in Los Angeles that I visit several times a year. If you've had enough of AYCE and find yourself hankering for meat that's a clear cut above your standard fare, I recommend you stop looking and give Chosun a try.
If you're looking for good Korean BBQ go to Chosun Galbee. The quality of meat is fantastic and the servers are attentive (they cook the meat for you too). I recommend trying the Chosun Galbee and Bulgogi along with a bottle of Soju (okay, and maybe a Hite too). Ask for a plate of lemons and try squeezing it into your Soju - it makes it a lot easier to drink and taste better.
So, instead of going across the street to the "other" place, spend an extra dollar on Valet, and a bit extra on the food because I promise that it'll be worth it and you won't leave smelling like you just jumped into a BBQ pit!
Great Korean restaurant for non Korean people!!
service is good, food is great. little bit pricey.
but i love it!!!

If you want some yumbolicious NAENGMYUN (cold buckwheat noodles - traditionally a N. Korean dish), Chosun is the place to be.
It's a bit of a drive from the OC, but when apah (dad) wants the best naengmyun, you know we'll be making the 30-minute drive out here for a bowl of cold and refreshing beef stock and perfectly cooked noodles.
Get your own bowl in either the soup or bibim (mixed in spicy pepper paste) variety for $11.99.
Oh...if you can, be sure to bypass the $2 lot parking (valet only) and park on the street.

YES! I serendipitously nabbed the 300th review for CHOSUN GALBEE!
Everything about this place is… Read more »
This is the place where we gather three generations of big eaters on Friday afternoon and eat like medieval Kings. Get a table on the patio if the weather is good so you don't go home smelling like steak. The shrimp is our favorite.
This is still the nicest korean BBQ place in town. The quality of meat is superior compared to other similar places with I've tried.
However, warning lately is they have been very pushy. We over ordered the last couple of times we were there. The last time, we ordered kimchee caserole, fish caserole, fish soup, and chap cae in addition to the BBQ meat dishes. Our server kept saying we need to order two of each dishes even though we told her we thought one was enough. We ended up taking home one fish caserole dish and one chap cae dish. The prior occasion she pushed us to order extra galbee and we also had to take a lot home.
So just be firm and say no if your server pushes you to order extra when you think it's enough.

I've been to Chosun before and remembered the kalbi/galbi being pretty good, so tonight I met a friend there again for dinner. I decide not to order the ribs and orderd the tongue.
If you're adventurous you should try tongue; though I wouldn't recommend it here. I like it sliced really thin and then cooked very well till it's almost crispy. Dip it in the salt and oil sauce and it's honestly one of the best things you'll ever taste.
Unfortunately, the cut at Chosun was thicker than I liked so it was hard to cook it the way that I like it, so I was a bit disappointed. They do so well on so many other things so it's too bad this wasn't better.
My friend ordered a black cod with spicy sauce and it was perfect. The fish was tender and melted in my mouth.
We've been going for years. The food is amazing and I'm enjoying reading the recommendations of others - next time we go we'll try some new things! Only thing I wouldn't try again is the chicken bulgogi.
Best Korean restaurant I've been to yet!
So far, this has been my best experience yet at a Korean BBQ restaurant. There is a bar when you walk in and both indoor and outdoor seating. Opt for the outdoor seating instead of sitting inside, it has a a massive steel canvas canopy that covers the length of the building comfortably. It is however smoking outside, although no one was while we were there. There's also two large party private rooms outdoors. This is a big place with a contemporary atmosphere.
For two people, I suggest ordering 1 or 2 dishes; with typical Korean BBQ the amount of options that come standard with your meal are astonishing, like Green Salad, Kim Chee, Jalapenos & Garlic, Potato Salad, assorted sauces and toppings. So plan on bringing an appetite and a little room for the authentic Hite beer. We ordered the Chosun Galbee Beef and the Tiger Shrimp, both excellent. I've been to other restaurants where you cook it yourself at the table, but here the servers do it for you tableside. Adjusting the temperature and flipping the food when necessary.
We celebrated a birthday, so we had ice cream for dessert with a candle. And yes, the servers aren't opera singers but they do sing happy birthday nicely. All-in-all, a great experience.
Came here for a friend's birthday party, so I didn't really check on the prices and I heard it's pricey... let's move on to the food ratings.
We ordered:
- Spicy Pork
- Bulgogi
- Loin
- Tongue
- Big meat (I forgot what's that somehow :|)
I might say, the food tasted great and the best part, it's a full-service restaurant, the waitresses cook the meat for you, even flipped our meat when it's about to be done. What more could you have ask for? and the Banchan... yummy, the fish cake just delicioso!!!
Valet parking is available, although I found parking on the street easily, so no complain there and yeah I would definitely come back here once I figure out how much they actually charged for what we ate ;)
Best. Frikkin. Korean. Ever.
The setting is super zen and awesome.
Service is stellar.
The whole shebang rocked my world.
The side dishes (fish cakes esp) were just fresh and wonderful.
The tiger shrimp were like minilobsters.
I mean it's like 5-star everything at 3-star prices.
It blew my stepdad's mind.
If you want "quality" Korean BBQ at Koreatown, this is the place to go. Just for your reference, any Korean BBQ House that offers all-you-can-eat is not quality meat. Do not believe those meats are bargain. They may look fresh, but it is not. Chosun serves USDA premium meat that you find in a well-respected steakhouse.
I come here whenever there is a company dinner or when I want to impress Korean BBQ to my non-Korean friends. I love coming here to eat during lunch. They provide variety of Lunch Special dishes which is not listed on their website. They have a galbee combo which comes with short rib cubes and other small Korean side dishes around it. Combination is also served with rice and warm seaweed soup. The only down side to this platter is that it costs roughly $20 with tax and tip. It is a bit costly for a lunch menu, Just swallow whatever the price comes out and imagine that if you come here, you are at Arnie Morton's of Koreatown. This place also attracts many professionals during the day.
The service is excellent here. The waitresses are dressed in traditional Korean dress and they are very polite to their customers. Korean restaurants are notorious for having lesser respect to non-Korean clients.
Love the atmosphere. Love the food. Love the service. Love the authentic korean mood....
Decent lunch special. Comes with a ton of food, but it is all pretty average, nothing blew me away, but I would go back.
Ask for the beef broth tea - it's the only place in the US that I've seen serve it and it's really good.
Easily one of my favorite Korean BBQ places I've been to. I've been coming here for years.. before it was even this super fancy shmancy place!
Yes, is it a bit on the pricey side, sure. But as others have said earlier... it's worth it and you really get your money's worth in terms of quality and atmosphere/service. Definitely more of an 'occasion' restaurant, even if that occasion is going out for a nice Korean BBQ dinner with friends. Super clean, modern, and spacious. The kalbi is exceptional and they are pretty generous with the banchan too!
Maybe not the best choice for budgeters and those on the run, but if you've got the time, the occasion, and the money... stop by Chosun!!!
Pricey! However, you can't get any better than this! Great service, quality meats!
yes. this place has some of the best quality meat in all of ktown. very fantastic!
Recommended: Your fave choice of meat.
The best korean bbq place i have ever been to. It is pricey, but worth every penny for that special occasion. I wouldn't really choose this place to go to if there is no special occasion or if i am not eating out with a picky person. I would go to a different korean all you can eat place. This place is not all you can eat, but after ordering two plates, you are pretty much finished. You can really taste the difference in the quality of meat. I never thought i would have said that about korean bbq, because it is usually pretty good by itself. But you can really taste the difference here. btw, the ban chans are really good there too. great quality!! So this place is worth the try.
The servers there are not the nicest in the world, but what do you expect from an asian place. you don't go there for the service, you go there for the food. :)
Parking isn't that bad especially if you go early. i had parked on the street and it wasn't at all a far walk. so arrive early if you don't want to valet park.
I also recommend sitting outside in the patio area. it is beautiful!! i love it out there.. it is calm and has the right amount of light and you don't have to be inside the restaurant. so it is nice and romantic.
Lastly, of course the alcohol. they serve wine there, yes! wine.. hehe beer, other types of alcohol such as soju and bek se ju..so whatever floats your boat, choose it and drink..eat...and be Merry!! ;)
This restaurant is beautiful inside. Coming from Chicago where the Korean establishments are undesirable in look but tasty nonetheless, this place blows them all out of the water. I've been here 3 times and I wish that I could live next door and eat here every day of my life. (BTW, I'm NOT even korean).
The Kalbi is marinated to perfection, not too sweet and not too salty. The garlicky goodness is in each bite. The pon-chon are good and the quantity is even better. I've had the daeji bulgogi, and the chap chae. Both were quite tasty although for some reason daeji bulgogi is not as tasty as bulgogi or kalbi. I love the pig, but stick to the ChoSun kalbi.
I wish that someone would transplant it to Chicago soon...PLEASE??
Since I went on my company's dime, it's easy for me to say this was some of the best Korean BBQ I've ever had.
Had I been paying, I would say this place was a tad on the pricey side but had some of the best banchan.
After the uneventful and aggravating KBBQ Festival in KoreaTown, my friends and I came to Chosun Galbee to eat, something that we surprisingly was not able to do at the festival. (We had stood in line for an hour and a half for Flip's BBQ only to be told that they ran out of meat and that it would be at least another hour before they can have everything ready! Screw that!!!)
We ordered a lot of food for three people: Chosun Galbee (obviously), Bulgogi, Daeji Bulgogi (Spicy Pork), Job Chae (Noodles), and Hae Mul Pa Jeon (Pancake with seafood).
The food came out rather slowly and it took them forever and three requests to bring me sugar for my green tea. But when the food finally arrived and the meat finished cooking, it was worth the wait.
The meat was extremely flavorful and awesome. Especially the Daeji Bulgogi which was impressively spicier than I expected (usually restaurants ease up on the spices for a more Americanized taste).
The Job Chae was not any different from other places I've tried - I think I like it better when it's cold though because the noodles don't break so easily. So it was kind of frustrating trying to use chopsticks on the hot dish when the noodles kept breaking up.
The Hae Mul Pa Jeon tasted better than I expected although my friend, who's a huge fan of the "pancake thing" didn't like it all that much. I liked it because the taste was subtle which seemed to enhance the taste of the seafood. If I didn't feel like I was ready to explode, I would've eaten the whole dish.
Although I wasn't very impressed by the service (it annoys me when servers in Korean restaurants come by and cook your meat for you because they usually do so in an insulting manner), I must admit the food was pretty good here. I don't know how much the bill was since my friend took care of it but it was probably a little over $100. The portions are relatively big so order wisely.
The best korean BBQ restaurant in the US.
Start with their "Seng Kalbi" which is BBQ ribs without the marinate. This has to be absolutely fresh otherwise the meat will go "gamy" after a day.
Then move on to their signature dish, the marinated Kalbi. The marinate is their specialty and it is their secret. No other place can come close to their marinate.
Korean BBQ is cheap these days everywhere in Ktown.
There is no reason for anyone to pay so much for it anymore, as much as they charge at Chosun Galbee.
However, I did not pay for the meal so commenting just on the food, it was a very good, but not exceptional Korean BBQ.
A very lovely and comfortable atmosphere. Beautiful bamboo walls and the exhaust fans work so well over the grills that i was actually cold on a summers night. It's super kid friendly. The waitress actually hugged and kissed my daughter. She had to give my daughter a squeeze every time she walked by. The service was A++
The chicken was excellent. The short ribs were not so great. The meat tasted inexpensive and greasy. Both portions were on the small side. I also wasn't crazy about the side dishes. Almost everything was just a little too spicy. Some were very good though. I don't know what it's called, but the white pickled radish that looks almost like pasta was incredible. Not crazy about the onion pancakes or the jalapeno pepper looking stuff with garlic on it.
This wasn't my favorite Korean meal, but the staff was so incredible that I will go back. Next time I'll try the black cod casserole just to do something different.
This is fanciest Korean BBQ I've ever been to. Atmosphere is nicer than Woo Lae Oak. You can sit outside underneath their modern architecture. I really enjoyed my lunch here on a hot summer day, underneath the shade.
I shared the Chosun Seng Dung Shim Gui (Agnus prime sirlion steak B.B.Q.) with my boyfriend. The hot grill was buttered before they threw on our steak. Yum! The meat was of good quality.
Panchan is your standard affair, but done well. I wish they had rice papers or radish slices though.
It's a tad on the pricey side, but worth it once in awhile.
If you're willing to splurge on some Korean bbq and/or have some guests who have never been exposed to this type of food, Chosun Galbee is a good bet. I've been to this place twice and I have had good experiences both times.
The most recent trip was for a birthday. We called to make reservations. Our wait wasn't too long, we got seated about ten minutes upon arrival. They gave us our own room. The establishment is very clean, grand, and modern. You can tell the investors put a lot of money into the place.
The food was good. The quality of the meat is excellent. I particularly enjoyed the beef tongue. Very tender, not chewy or tough at all. The kalbi was also very well marinated and delicious. I wasn't too impressed with the chadol baege. The bul go gi was decent. I also ordered the hwae do bap which was really good. I think a lot of people on my table enjoyed it.
The service: more than we can ask for. We almost practically never had to cook the meat. The waitresses were always in our room, cooking all the food and making sure everyone was getting their portion. Whatever we asked for, we got pretty quickly. I feel bad sometimes going somewhere with so many of my friends because sometimes I feel like we're a rough crowd. Surprisingly, the service here was very, very good. We tipped them well for it.
So, if you are willing to spend a little more for some quality meat at a fancier place, then Chosun Galbee will be a good choice.Good time, great food!
(Our party: 14 people $500 tab. Pigs!)
We dined for a friend's birthday here. We were about 15 people deep and were able to reserve a little private room. It was nice. If you are dining with a large party, I recommend you call in advance to reserve.
This place is not AYCE, so you will be paying by the dish. It's a little more on the expensive side. The quality of the meat and dishes are a little higher than some of the regular Korean BBQ places, but not high enough to warrant the price. What you're basically paying for is the service, which is superb. My favorite meat dish was the cow tongue. I can't tell you how many plates we put away.
A lot of the times, when you eat Korean BBQ, one of the charms of eating at a place like this is being able to cook the meat yourself. If you don't already know, they cook the meet for you, which at first I didn't like too much. As the night wore on, I began to see how efficient and convenient it was. No long moments of no meat. It just kept coming. She was good. A guy can get use to something like that. Totally spoiled now.
I would recommend this place if you're looking for a nicer Korean BBQ joint, especially if you're taking someone you want to impress.
