I say it's not that bad.
A pretty Japanese girl with big boobs greeted us. A+++++++
She also was very attentive to our needs.
The sushi and other things we ordered arrived promptly and it wasn't bad. I'm rating it more for service than food. The food wasn't bad. I'd call it on par with good places around San Diego, however, I think their unagi was especially good.
It's VERY affordable and definitely worth it, especially after you attempt to go to Sushi Deli 3 and they are packed.
Having never been to the original, I can't really compare the places, but this one is much closer to my job so it's perfect for lunch. The parking lot is meh, but the area near the restaurant isn't terrible if you are there early enough. I have a feeling things are about to change though, Ross is going to open up and that quiet little side of the lot (furthest from Mitsawa and Starbucks) will be hit.
The service at this place always makes me giggle a bit, there are just so many people running around and I'm never entirely sure which one is my waitress/waiter. But, they always get the job done quickly and efficiently - all I can really ask for on my lunch break. Well, that and pretty good food at a pretty cheap price. They've got that too, so I'm golden.
The combo deals are the cheapest thing around - they've even lowered their prices recently. A crunchy roll plus chicken katsu is $4.95. But wait, there's more! You get rice, salad and miso soup for the same low price! Same goes for the teriyaki chicken combos. Mmm!
Mabo Ramen is delicious as well. I loved telling my mom I had ramen for lunch and her wondering why I didn't buy "real" food only to find out I had fancy, real ramen not that stupid 10 cent college food. It was a huge bowl, too and about $7, I think.
Gyoza only comes fried and that was the one bad part of my time at Chopstix. I liked it and all, but I wish steamed was an option. I just feel like the fattening dumpling is healthier when it's steamed. It's all in my head, but sometimes that's all it takes.
Either way, I'll be back at lunch time to enjoy the warm soup on a frozen day at the office. Mmm mmm good!
Either Chopstix location is a good compromise spot when half your group wants sushi but the other half would like something cooked. They have both needs covered with a moderately wide selection of rolls and nigiri as well as the standards of noodles, teriyaki, and katsu.
I have had an occasional bit of meh sushi here, but the mehs are far enough between that I don't worry about it much when I inevitably come back. However, I'm more likely to be eating the hot dishes at Chopstix: it always gets into my regular rotation for cold-weather udon cravings.
Prices are low, portions are large, and Too has much better lunchtime parking than One.
Seriously crunchy roll teriyaki combo is the greatest thing ever. I eat here like 3 times a week. Think I'm addicted. Great price and great portions. Nice place to go to lunch or quick dinner. Low key atmosphere and have never had a bad experience.
I was craving Japanese food and remembered this place used to be a Samurai Sam's, so when I popped in here for lunch, I expected it to be more fast food-like, but I was happy to see a cute neighborhood sushi bar/restaurant. It was pretty busy, but the hostess directed me to the counter so I could order to go.
The staff seemed polite enough, though distracted since it was busy. I ordered a teriyaki bowl and wanted to try their sushi, so I got a California Orange to go (California roll with fresh salmon on top). I left a tip for the counter staff and took a seat. They had quick to-go service because my order was ready within minutes.
Was it the very best sushi I'd ever had? No. Was it adequate? Sure, it was alright. It was definitely better than I anticipated and to their credit, would probably have been even better if I'd eaten it right there at the sushi bar. I would order the California Orange again.
The teriyaki? Eh... I've had better. I am weird about my teriyaki, though. I am not a fan of dark meat chicken. It's not the taste, it's the texture... it gives me the heebies. Some places cut the fatty/gristle-y/tendinous bits off, some don't and just chop the chicken in a frenzy. This was one of those places. *shrug* Different strokes. I prefer my teriyaki all white meat or trimmed up a bit more.
The rice was slightly mushy, and the veggies, what I could find of them, were alright. The sauce was good, but I don't think I'd order the teriyaki bowl again. Maybe something else teriyaki... but not the bowl.
The prices were right and I would eat here again. Maybe once I try more things I can kick it up a star since so many folks seem to like it, but all in all? A-OK.
Our friends wanted to come here instead of hitting the nearby Santouka... what a mistake. I ordered the tonkotsu chashu ramen... The chashu was thick, dry and very tough, while the tonkotsu broth was oily, overly salty and had barely any pork bone flavor. The noodles were pretty standard but were clumped together in the bottom of the bowl. The hard-boiled egg was likewise pretty tasteless, though I liked the bean sprouts and the red ginger.
Should've gone to Santouka... My taste buds were decidedly unimpressed and afterwards, my stomach didn't thank me either, as I had the runs for the rest of the night. *gurgle*
This is the best, most affordable lunch spot in the area. It has become my go-to place for lunch meetings or to pick up a quick bite. The portions are ample and the service is beyond quick. The staff is friendly and attentive.
Their lunch specials are extraordinary affordable and huge portions. I always get the crunchy roll, chicken salad and edamame combo. It comes with miso soup and never disappoints.
Chopstix Too a pretty great place to come for a gathring. The food is tasty, fast to make, and cheap(It only costs 5 dollars for Miso Soup, Rice, A Salad, 8 Pieces of Chicken Katsu, and 3 Crunchy Rolls, definetely something I recommend) the service is somewhat nice. I just always see this lady with a frown face on her all the time (just smile:)
All in all, a pretty good place.
I love Chopstix Too! When it's too busy at Mitsuwa, I just cross the plaza into Chopstix Too and order my sushi. The combination lunches/to go are a great deal as well.
Similar to the original "Chopstix" but this place has more combo meals, bowls, and sells teriyaki.
Like the first location, the food is delicious and reasonable, but the service is lacking!
I give this place a great rating! I've tried a lot of stuff on their menu and it's pretty good food for the price, there mother resteraunt ChopSticks is a great place too just older and a different atmosphere.
I'd recommend this place for inexpensive Japanese food! The staff is very nice as well :)
Yumm! Love the crunchy roll and the curry bowl. Very affordable and fast!
Chicken katsu and crunchy roll combo (half order of each) for like $7. Rice, miso and salad too. Will definitely fill you up. Really hits the spot. Just great.
Ramen is okay -- in fact one really can't complain -- but really you should just walk over to Santouka.
You cannot beat the Chicken Katsu and Crunchy Roll combo for lunch. I mean its like 5.45 and you get a lil salad with your crunchy roll and chicken katsu. Amazing. Plus a key for the single men out there. The servers are all eye candy! Love it!
I would highly recommend them for a quick lunch. Call in the order ahead of time and youre golden.
This place is okay, been here a couple of times for lunch with my dad.
Good deals for lunch tho... but besides that the sushi is EH. I've had
better, it gets busy during lunch hours but doesn't everywhere? I prefer
Chopstix numero uno better :]
GREAT JAPANESE FOOD FOR CHEAP!!!
1st of all, don't come here expecting fresh sashimi. This is place serves yummy COOKED food.
I have never had any problems with the waitresses. They are always so nice and super friendly.
Here are my two favorite dishes from Chopstix Too:
- Mabo Udon
(udon is perfectly cooked, not too hard & not too mushy. Mabo is sweet and thick. It goes very well with the soup.. overall a great flavor!)
- Chicken Katsu & Crunchy Roll Combo $6.95
(comes with chicken katsu, 3 pieces of crunchy roll, salad with japanese dressing, rice and miso soup)
i apologize to those stuck up snobs who think Chopstix Too is too cheap for you. Unlike you morons, we got monthly mortgage / rent / credit cards / student loan / health insurance / home insurance / property insurance/ auto insurances / property tax / SDGE / water / cable / HOA / & phone bills to pay and we appreciate great food for cheap.
My first time here. I came here with my boyfriend around 8ish, barely anyone there, no wait or rush. The lady was really rushy (if that's even a word) but i thought she wanted us out & in. we ordered, got the crunchy roll b/c they had a special going on. i got the chicken curry & my bf got the chicken teriyaki with crunchy roll (good deal for a decent price)
the lady didn't bother to ask if we had anything else in mind & her voice just seem like she was in a hurry or something.
yeah, the crunchy roll wasn't what i expected, the eel sauce just killed it for me & usually rolls would come with 8 pieces? but it came with 5, but it was pretty big. but the eel sauce just killed it for me.
my chicken curry wasn't so bad, came with miso soup & salad. the miso soup was different & salad had no sauce, but they hand you one on the side, which is different from any other Japanese place. my boyfriend's chicken teriyaki wasn't so bad :)
the younger looking waitress was way more better than the older lady. she was nice for the other half.
but, the food here is cheap & pretty decent. :)
3 stars for the food - cheap and satisfying. (Ex: chicken katsu + crunchy roll for $6.75, although the rolls end up falling apart.)
5 of my friends and I came here around 8:45pm. I know and understand that they close at 9pm, but even if I came at 8:59pm, I expect and DESERVE polite and friendly service just bc I am a paying customer. Half of our party arrived a few minutes earlier, and honestly 30 seconds after the second half of our party came, the rude ass waitress/owner/hostess comes up and seriously goes "WHAT DO YOU WANT? ORDER NOW LAST CALL." Um.. do we not even have time to look at the menu? And is that screeching voice necessary? I know she doesn't normally talk like that bc I've been here countless times, and she's pretty soft-spoken.
We get our food, and about 5 minutes after we eat, the same angry waitress/hostess/owner comes and slams the bill down on our table. We continue trying to eat, but the whole time she's pacing back and forth and walking from the kitchen to our table, around our table, and then back to the kitchen. Obviously I'm not stupid. She just wants us out of there. But whatever, we ordered. We deserve to be able to enjoy our food. Yea, well the whole time she kept asking us if we were done. Oh yea, and once someone in my party asked for a box, she brought out boxes for ALL of us. It already irritated me that she was trying so hard to kick us out. And at that point, I think it was only 9:15pm.
So after she gives us all boxes, she comes up (still in her screeching voice) and tells us we need to pay NOW bc she's closing her register. Okay, that's fine. But she said it in such a rude and condescending tone, which isn't fine. We decide to split the bill four ways, and I go up to her with three cards. I hand her a discover and say "I'd like to put--" and she interrupts me and goes "NO DISCOVER HERE". Um.. okay. So then we get the card situation figured out, and when I'm about to split the check between the last card and the cash, she tells me with this rude ass tone that I need to have both the last card AND the cash there. I didn't think that was necessary, esp. since when I had the cash, she still didn't know how much belonged on the card and how much was supposed to be paid in cash.
Anyway, Chopstix Too can kiss my service goodbye bc that lady was SO RUDE. If that's how she wants to treat her customers, I will gladly take my service elsewhere.
ps: Don't take their food to go.. unless you want a really bad stomach ache.
Celebrating a friend's 21st birthday is always special and great food, fun, an plenty of alcohol is always on the menu. With TGI Fridays off the menu of b-day venues, I met up with the group at Chopstix Too.
First things first, and it was time to drop some sake bombs with the birthday girl. The staff was a bit cross when we lined up the shots because they were afraid we would break our glasses, but we did them anyway. The only thing to follow up the first round with was the second! Since it was the first drinks the birthday girl had since she turned 21, she decided to take it a bit easy, an see how she felt after some grub, so on to the dinner.
I started with the spicy crab roll, which was likely actually the artificial variant, "krab". It was OK an had a nice spice to it, but was a bit on the boring side and wasn't very well made. My chicken katsu combo came with the crunchy roll and was served with rice, miso soup, and a really bland salad. The chicken katsu was tender and crispy and I always enjoy the crunchy rolls. Their miso soup was very boring and I'm not even sure why they include the salad since it was undressed and barely edible.
We never did order any more alcohol that night, but I think that everybody enjoyed their dinners. I used to have trouble finding something to enjoy at the other location, but fortunately this one offered the combos that gave me everything that I could possibly want (and even some I didn't) for a very reasonable price. If I'm ever in the mood to switch up my Tajima lunch diet, I would definitely consider Chopstix Too as a decent alternative.
Food: 7/10
Service: 6/10
Price: $
Atmosphere: 7/10
I've had better sushi elsewhere.
My friend and his two other friends who I know as well decided to have dinner here one night.
I guess he's been there A LOT.
It's cheap for the most part.
The teriyaki chicken was good.
The service was quick.
The cheap-o rolls during their happy hour were alright.
It wasn't busy when we went, but more people were coming in.
Not great, just alright.
This is by far one of my fav places to go for lunch. Cheap and fast... and easy.. Just how I like 'em.
I usually get the #1 Combo. Soup, Salad, rice, chicken, and sides of shrimp carrots broccoli all deep fried.
It mu mu mu makes me happppy.
Affordable but average, almost painfully so. I left feeling a little unsatisfied. While the portions were fine (for the price) and the service was hospitable enough, the food was just okay.
And okay in the way of, "Ehh if I just went to Mitsuwa or any of the other Japanese markets in the area, I could whip up something better than this, and I'm not even a great cook." But they try.
Affordable Japanese food- come here for your ramen and chicken katsu! I've always stuck with those standards, and I've never been disappointed. Sometimes service can be surly and slow, but at least the prices are good and the food is delicious. Nothing creative and nothing new, just good homey Japanese food at a decent price.
I prefer this location because the parking is easy and it's less crowded. I'm not sure if it's the exact same menu, but they still have my ramen!
Being a student, sometimes good Japanese food can be tough to come by. This place not only has good food and great service, but the price is great as well!
I usually do not order sushi at this place (don't know why, I just never have), but I do eat the ramen that they have here. The Champon, Chashu, and the Mabo Ramen are wonderful. The udon with the mountain vegetables is great too. They also have great deals on all of their combo meals.
Lunch can get busy but the service is always quick. Dinner is much more quiet so I recommend coming here then.
Like its "mother restaurant," this Chopstix has great portions.
Every time I have come here the people have been very friendly.
And YES! To all of the other people who want to know, Chopstix Too is related to THE Chopstix on Convoy. They both have the same friendly owner!
I like to come here for lunch every now and then. Lunch combos are a good deal. Like others have mentioned, the lunches come with miso soup and salad and usually a few rolls or something depending on what you pick. Food comes out quick and hot.
They have a sushi bar but I haven't tried it. They also have a few televisions up on the wall showing sports. The place is pretty small and seems well suited for quick, casual meals.
This place is probably one of my top faves spending money on. Its so cheap and yummy and worth every penny. i always go here with my bff and they know me very well that right when i walk in they say my order. thats when you know you go there way too much haha. i always order the chicken katsu and crunchy roll but the best part of the meal is the tempura miso soup, so flavorful but not over powering. the reason why i didnt give it a 5 star is because you see a sushi bar but you never see anyone making sushi there,&sometimes the avocado is slightly brown in the crunchy roll so you dont know how long its been sitting out because they probably make a ton a day cause its included in almost every meal.
I didn't eat that much here, but I did get the jist of the place and thought my review would be helpful :)
The eating area is small, but it's nice/comfy. There's a tv to watch sports too :) I split an order of the crunchy roll (which is on sale right now btw, only 5 dollars as compared to 8 :D) with Wilmar D. and it came out pretty quickly The rolls are pretty big and they were decent, although a LITTLE bit blander than what I'm used to (maybe because I opted out of the spicy mayo topping).
The waiting service was pretty good. They were quick to take our orders, and the rest of the food for our table came our relatively quickly. They were also quick to take away our plates.
I think something random (but important to me! :D) to note is that they have really good water. I have eaten at a good amount of places around san diego to know that most of them have crappy water. L&L has nasty water. So does Los Primos off of Mira Mesa Blvd. (Just to name a few memorably disgusting water samples). But their water is really good here :) I don't know what they do to it, but props to them!!! :)
I'd come back, I'd like to try more of their food and I had a pretty good initial experience :)
Hella good food and even better with the price. I always get the #7 combo. It's the miso soup, chicken katsu, crunchy roll, steam rice and salad for $5.xx.
The quality of food is the same as what you pay for. The quantity feels like its more than you paid for. Does not reflect a true Japanese restaurant. Has some American twists. All in all, will always comeback for quick, cheap, tasty food.
The cheap prices are alluring, but the food is horrible. I got the chicken teriyaki figuring you can't go wrong with that dish. The chicken was questionable and I couldn't eat all the meat, it was either fatty or weird looking, I dunno. The sushi is somewhere between sucks and ok, however grocery store sushi is better than this place though. Service sucks too, they skrewed up more than 1 order at our table.
Chopstix Too is really close to the office, and it's a favorite lunch spot for me, my husband, and my dear friend. As the other positive reviews indicate, the food is good, fast, and cheap. One time we did come between 12 and 1, and it was not the case, but in many cases, we sit down, someone goes to the restroom, and the miso soup and/or entree is already at the table upon return. We've only ordered from the lunch combo menu in the back (of the menu). The items used to be numbered--my usual was the #9: edamame, miso soup, chicken salad (green salad with chicken and crunchy noodles), and a 5-piece crunchy roll. The soy salad dressing is one of the condiments already on the table. Sometimes, I've ordered the mixed tempura combo (shrimp & vegetables), which comes with miso soup, rice, salad, and a 3-piece crunchy roll. I may be imagining it, but I think the sauce on the crunchy roll has gotten spicier in the past year.
We had been to the original Chopstix on Convoy for years, for the ramen. Just went there last night. We go to that location for the ramen, and Chopstix Too for the lunch specials. I don't go to either place for the sushi though.
I've dined at many types of different Japanese/sushi places, from low-end to high-end, Korean-owned/managed, Japanese-owned/managed, hole-in-the-wall, neighborhood, traditional, trendy, in San Diego, San Francisco Bay Area, LA, Tokyo. I remember tasting authentic Japanese food in LA at a place called Okada as a kid in the 70s, and I think I had my first taste of raw sashimi in Manila in the 80s. I appreciate variety. Honestly, I don't normally associate wonderful, fast, and courteous service from a lot of Asian restaurants. I've had some of the best Japanese food/sushi at a place with terrible service, but I still go there, and the service has improved over the years.
I go to Chopstix Too because of the great value for the price, and the check total never disappoints.
After being a devotee of Chopstix for nearly 20 years, I was excited to hear about Chopstix Too opening up. The basic difference between the two is that Chopstix Too has less emphasis on noodles and more on sushi. That being said I really don't like it, its OK for lunch if I worked in the area but given the choice I'd always opt for the O.G.
Chopstix Too is much more of a quick-service type of restaurant. Although at both you can get table service at Chopstix they're a LOT nicer and more efficient, at Chopstix Too it just seems like they don't care. Their grand opening specials are a great deal too; I find it hilarious that they've had them for oh, ever since their grand opening was so long ago. A huge star off too because my bf picked up lunch for me once here and I found a hair in my sushi roll. I understand that things happen but ew since then I just can't bring myself to go.
I often come here during lunch because the food is inexpensive and FAST! I always get the same thing -- the #7 lunch special with no rice/extra salad. That's miso soup, chicken katsu, rice and/or salad, and a crunchy roll -- all for under $6!
To me, the food is "Americanized Japanese" cuisine and for the steal you are getting, I wouldn't expect anything more. Its always crowded during lunchtime so beware of that.
I go once or twice a week. Huge fan of the Specials on the back of the menu and the fact that the TV is always playing sports. Good place for a quick meal, very casual, and efficient.
Sushi is okay, I have definitely had better, Ramen and Udon are what I go for when the mood strikes. The crunchy roll is so freakin addicting!
Highly recommend the lunch/dinner specials;includes rice, salad, miso soup and crunchy or california roll. You choose your entree from Katsu chicken, Terriyaki chicken or Tempura combo. Gyoza ( potstickers) was not that good and Ive ordered it twice.
Overall not a bad experience If you want your bill under 10 bucks with a full meal and a drink.
The only thing that irks is the lack of a Sashimi platter. Wheres my delicious Sashimi?
i always get the special chicken katsu and crunchy roll. ooo good. For the price, it is so affordable! There are other specials! If you togo the order it will be a dollar less but you don't get the soup. The service is always nice. Everyone on staff isequally nice. I really like it here!
Japanese food just ain't my thing, no matter how well it's prepared, and this may be a 5 star place for aficionados of the cuisine, I just wouldn't know it.
I've been several times, as a tag along, and have eaten most everything on my plate on all occasions, but here's the scoop.
This place is cheap.
The tempura is bland (but it's supposed to be so I am told)
Service is friendly and fast.
It all tastes like soy sauce to me, or teriyaki.
The spam roll is interesting, but doesn't have a moment of enlightenment that comes with it. It tastes like sushi in the end.
The chicken teriyaki, is good, but teriyaki doesn't really do it for me, at least the chicken is cooked through.
The sushi rolls are colorful and creative.
The place is clean, and has comfy seating.
There's a strange table with literature of events and stuff at the entrance.
Not much to say on this place. I'm told it's good by true fans. I just don't get it.
I love the food, but due to under staffing the service leaves much to be desired.
You might recognize the food and staff from Chopstix 1, but the menu actually has more to it then the original. A sushi bar as well as dinner combinations. The ramen/ udon/ soba variety isn't like Chopstix 1, but for some reason they offer Champon, which is freaking awesome.
I don't know whether to feel bad for the waitresses or not. They are severely under staffed and I've been there on days where all seats are full and one waitress is all they've got. I've also been there on days when only 3 people will be in the place and it takes 15 minutes for them to take my order. :( That and the fact that I've been there a few times and was seated then several other groups are seated after me and they are served before I am.
I'm guessing that being a regular at Chopstix for about 15 years holds absolutely no seniority at Chopstix Too, even if it's the same wait staff from back in the day.
The food isn't your standard Japanese fair. It's very Americanized, but sooo good. The prices are insanely low for a combination dinner and I can walk out of there for under $10. Unlike Chopstix, the new place allows you to pay by credit card no matter what your bill is, (Chopstix 1 requires a $10 minimum charge). For people like me, who never carry cash it's great. The tastes are the same as Chopstix. Same miso, salad dressing, mabo, curry, etc. The crowd isn't as bad, but since they lack servers you'll actually be waiting longer. I don't know if they have a lack of servers because they don't get enough business to hire more people, or if it's just because no one wants to work there, but unfortunately the lack of staff brings their 5 stars to a 3.
UPDATE:
The staff is now full, with four waiters/ waitresses instead of one, but keep the three star rating due to the removal of items from the menu with nothing added. :(
The lunch specials are the best! 5 bucks and some change can get you salad, miso soup, rice, crunchy roll, and chicken katzu! What a deal!!
Their chicken katzu is really good! Their crunch roll is okay nothing great but not gross. Its definately good for the money. :)
Good place for a quick lunch. Don't expect the best sushi or service. But the food average and the service is quick.
For $7 I had one of their lunch combos. Miso soup, Crunch salad, California roll, edamame and a drink.
It ended up being more than I could finish.
By the look of the menu, it doesn't seem like they specialize in specialty sushi rolls. Almost all of their combos come with a California roll, which is hardly sushi. I would stick to their combos or Katsu plates.
I wasn't sure about this place at first...
1.) The name made no sense. Is this related to the other Chopstix on Convoy? The food seems to be entirely different.
2.) It's cheap...I mean "hey I'm in junior college" cheap.
The food however, is pretty good. Much better than a dorm room cafeteria, but much worse than Nobu's. So if you're hungry, want good food that won't give you the runs - this is it.
I've tried just about everything on the menu, and here's my rule of thumb when I go here.
1.) Don't eat the raw sushi. Not that it's bad...but I'm just really picky about my raw fish.
2.) Cooked rolls are good. Crunchy roll - good. Salmon Skin roll - better.
3.) I like the way they put tempura crunchy stuff in the miso soup.
4.) Sesame chicken salad - good.
5.) Teriyaki anything - good. You have to be an idiot to mess up Teriyaki.
6.) Ramen - decent.
I eat here about once a month - overall, I like it.
