Here's the deal with this place: it's hit or miss, unless you know who to ask for. I happen to know that sherry's really good at what she does...see if you can get an appointment with her. Or just tell them exactly what you want done, when you're making an appointment, in the most severe and particular tone you can manage.
I paid $20 here to fix a bad haircut that cost well over twice that much.

The reviews are so polarized on this place I was hesitant to go in. However I needed a haircut and since my hair grows fast I decided to give it a try.
I am pretty satisfied with my haircut. My stylist Crystal listened to what I wanted; but also used her own judgment to make my hair look better. I will definitely make sure to get her again after hearing some of the horror stories about this place.
The one interesting thing they do is charge different rates for clippers only ($10), scissors only ($20), and a combo of both ($15).
Cheap, quick haircutting place. Helped relieved the haircutting sticker shock I encountered upon my move to Philly. Now $15 is considered cheap and not the norm (or expensive with a coupon).
I've never had a wait (planned accordingly) and never requested anyone. I'm a guy, and have a pretty easy haircut, so I can't speak of overall skill levels, but I've never been let down after 3 trips (knock on wood).
Also, the "man hater" at the front has always been nice to me.

I used to get my haircut here years ago by Peter, the old manager. he was always great. before him, I tried several others there, and they were terrible.
Went there recently and had my hair done by Brooke, and she was amazing, did a great job, and was very nice and chatty.
The 2 stars are for the nasty, angry, short haired, man hating, blonde girl at the counter. I watched her treat 2 women very nicely, then she treated me like complete crap for no reason, and when I left I smiled and said have a nice day (nicely), she said "Yeah what the fuck ever". Really classy. Once Brooke moves away, I'll be going to supercuts, where I can get better service, just as good a haircut, and a shampoo for the same price.

My hair is straight, fine and apparently really easy to cut. So why spend $45 for a trim just because it falls into the 'long' category? With this in mind, I set out for the Chop Shop after work one Wednesday evening. I only had a 15 minute wait in the small waiting area with tons of magazines.
Then it was my turn with the stylist (didn't catch her name, darn) who gave me exactly the cut I needed. I pointed out my layers and angles, and she kept them intact while trimming everything. She wasn't extremely conversational, which is a big plus for me, as I like to spend haircuts zoning out instead of giving my life story. My hair looked wonderful afterward and I was only out $15 plus tip. I would definitely recommend this location to anyone with equally easy-to-cut hair. who is short on time and money.

A guy's hair cut is a tricky thing; only douchebags and Uncle Jesse care enough about their hair to pay for an actual salon but using clippers is a sucker's way out and not everyone has friends with edward scissor-hand like skill, and chances are the local barber's shop only knows one hair cut which everyone gets no matter what they ask for.
The Chop Shop has the benefit of being very cheap ($15-20 depending on how nice your stylist is). Going in, know you have a chance of getting a really terrible hair cut. But we're men; our hair grows back pretty quickly and if we really hate it we can wear a hat or just not shave for a few days and go for the grungey look.
Of the year I've gone here, I've had maybe 2 bad hair cuts. Those aren't bad odds considering the number of bad hair cuts I've had in my life. I always ask for a scissors-only cut, and sometimes I'll get a stylist who is confused about what to do with side burns. But I can trim side burns on my own, and anyone with a general knowledge of how to handle curly hair is preferable to some of the people I've dealt with at far pricier salons.

Because my friend was going to Chop Shop come hell or high water I went with him anyway and got my beard and hair styled. The stylist screwed up my beard. I wanted a strip going right down my chin, and he did that, but it's crooked. I mean it literally is off center on my chin. My friend's mohawk was also off center, in the back area it veers off by about 1/2 an inch. These stylists are amateurs to the extreme. There's a reason it's dirt cheap, people...Do NOT go here!

5 STARS FOR STYLIST B.Z.!!! (ONE SHORT OF FIVE STARS FOR THE BUSINESS BECAUSE THE YOUNG LADY WITH THE SHORT BLONDE HAIRCUT AT THE FRONT DESK IS A BIT "QUICK" JUST SHORT OF RUDE.)
OKAY!... Glad I got that off of my chest, whew! Well my fellow Yelpers... my Mom actually got me into the Chop Shop (YEARS AGO) believe it or not. She keeps a really close cut like the old Halle Berry, but with naturally tight curls & she's finicky about her hair so, if it's good for her, I'm up to check it out!
I MUST say that my stylist B.Z. is a phenom with the scissors & a great guy to chop it up with, no pun intended! (Okay, okay... a little pun intended.) ; ) He was there for me from a quick trim & shape up to the time when I wanted to go for it, boosting my bravery to take off about 4 1/2 inches from the back, I adored that Rhianna cut, pre-Chris Brown drama/horror: http://s.bebo.com/app-...
I even brought my boyfriend there although he has two sets of clippers at home which he has excellent precision with as he keeps his head bald & shapes up his beard & keeps it low.
I would recommend talking to a few of the stylists & ask who is great at such 'n' such style, who has worked the most with my texture/type of hair?... You DO have that right to ask folks! Personally, I have THICK hair & I've had stylists sigh with frustration when they reach down in my hair to get a feel for it. It's not an "easy head" to work on from what I'm told & from what I know as I typically relax & style my own hair.
I have spent up to $200 (and 8 grueling, painful hours) on a hair session getting micro braids, $180 (and an hour and fifteen minute delay past my appointment time) trying out getting some sewn in tracks (to give the back more length as I'm growing my hair back out), $120 on a wash/blow dry/curl & who would've known that a $9.00 relaxer kit put in at home followed by a $20 trip (it's $20 because I specifically request B.Z. plus tip) to the Chop Shop would be the answer that I was looking for?!
Forget the overpriced salons, bypass the stylists who start to work on walk-ins while you sit fuming mad in the land of the deferred, "under the dryer" only to have to be made to feel like your stressing your stylist out when you speak up for yourself... RUN, DON'T WALK PAST the DOMINICAN SALON #2 on Broad St. (don't worry, you'll be tempted to run or speed walk to your destination regardless) who made a 12 o' clock (yes, noon) appointment with me and ***WASN'T EVEN OPEN AT ALL*** AFTER I HAD WAITED IN THE FREEZING COLD FOR AN HOUR AND 15 MINUTES... I WAS INFURIATED & JUST GAVE UP & LEFT ANGRY MESSAGES SAYING I WAS GOING TO BE SURE TO SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE. THEY EVEN HAD THEIR ORANGE, METAL ROLL DOWN GATE PULLED DOWN & LOCKED!!!
Yes, so if getting a rate increase that brought my total to a bank breaking $20.00 plus tip while getting seated quickly, being on on of the most fun & ridiculously convenient streets in Philly (cough, cough... Whole Foods & their awesome garage... cough, cough), & getting a "casket sharp" haircut is wrong... then I won't dare wish to be right! ; )
In short, ask for B.Z. & you won't be led astray! ; ) P.S. The super funky cool chickadee in the back with the highlighted dred-hawk & buzzed sides with the militant looking boots is sweet as cherry pie & also did an excellent job with a trim & shape up when I did an unexpected drop in & B.Z. wasn't working that day. Bueno suerte!

Tons of bang for the buck - I've had good luck with the chop shop. $10 has bought me cuts that were awesome and a few that were not as awesome but still cute.
I think you'll do fine if you go in with a strong idea of what you want: this is a place with a HUGE volume of customers, so they don't have a lot of time to lavish on your hair. If you're seeking that kind of attention, creative artistry and inspired hair, choose your stylist carefully and tip well - or go to The Alley or AmMo. This is the kind of place where you need to bring a picture and a verbal description of what you want. And once you find a stylist there who fits, request them next time (it's worth the extra $5). For what they are, I think the chop shop does an incredible job. They consistently turn out good (and at worst, mediocre) hair for a ridiculously cheap price.

I needed to find a place that was able to give me an edgier cut than I was used to. After doing some research and printing out oversized pics of the perfect bangs and style, I stepped foot into the Chop Shop. The counter person was very sweet and all the stylists were busy with clients so the wait was about 10-15 minutes and completely bearable.
Upon my sitting, I showed the stylist (and I use that term loosely) the way I'd like my layers and bangs to be cut. Long and wispy in the front, light in the back and my bangs were to sit side sweeped BELOW (please make note) my eyes.
She started working a razor on my layers. Then grabbed my bangs into one hand and in one swoop took off about two inches. Now two inches of hair is not alot, but when you're dealing with bangs, even a quarter inch too much, is fatal for the 'do. I blurted out "What the hell are you doing?" My now shaggy, uneven bangs sat mid- forehead, half an inch ABOVE my eyes. Don't you know you're supposed to pace when cutting bangs!!! Not only that, I told her I had curly/wavy hair and that alone should've red-flagged the whole bang fiasco before it had happened. Arrrrrrghhhh!!!!
I had to wear a headband and clips for almost a year to keep those bad boys tame. Never again. Her name escapes me, but she's white, about 5' or 5'1", really skinny, like crackheadish almost, with reddish hair. Avoid her like the plague.

I'm cheap by nature. It may be my jewish upbringing, who knows. For once, my frugality has actually gotten me something of quality! I was drawn to this place as they advertised haircuts for 10 dollars, plus it looked a little edgier than my tried and true hair cuttery. I walked in and asked how long the wait was, and to my surprise there was none. My stylist did a very good job(better than mentioned hair cuttery) even though she spoke little english. She did mention loving John Lennon, and that was good enough for me. And then I went to pay, and gasp, horror, it was 15 dollars! I felt like it was worth though, and will probably end up coming back.

I've been here a half dozen times at least and have come to the conclusion this place will do for a cheap-ish quick-ish walk in decent hair cut ($35 plus tip for women's wash/cut/style). I think my husband's cut was like $10 plus tip. Right now they're remodeling & it looks pretty dumpy, but at least now they have a waiting area in the front of the shop. I've never requested a certain stylist & Ive had some that were better than others, but one consistant thing I have noticed is they all give really good massages while shampooing. They also don't over do it w/ the chit chat. If you're looking for a posh place this isn't it. But you will get a decent cut.

I've been going to the Chop Shop for almost two years now. While it took me some trial and error to find the right stylist for me at the salon, I've been getting my hair done by Krystal for over a year.
The prices can't be beat, I've never had to wait for more than 10 minutes before being seated even with no appointment, and my stylist is really accommodating and willing to experiment with me (which can be a little scary sometimes, given my experience pre-Krystal).
Definitely check it out if you have nothing to lose.
$20 for a great haircut that took 20 minutes. Didn't include a shampoo or blow dry. Didn't include any conversation. The notorious front-desk girl (cute blonde with boy-cut) was pretty charming. She almost agreed to hold a customer's 5 month old baby, then caught herself and said, "Uh, no, I've got something, uh--not that I don't like kids, maybe another time. Not today." The place is perfectly dumpy and jammed with people ranging from edgy to average, 7 years old to 50-something, but mainly in the 20s. If you're pretentious or high maintenance or neurotic or just achingly narcissistic, this probably isn't the place for you.

Today, I got a haircut that only cost 10 bones.
Before I went, I read the reviews on here... most of them aren't that encouraging... but I decided to go for two reasons. First, I'm super cheap. Second, I haven't been happy with a single haircut I've had pretty much ever. So I usually cut my own hair... which I'm never happy with either. And, because I'm never happy with haircuts, I hate to pay a lot of money for them.
I went in with low expectations and no plan. I said, "I'm tired of this soccer-mom cut... I want something more fun that I can hopefully still put in a ponytail". And you know what? That's what I got! Literally. This happened. And at the end, she even pulled back my hair to show me that it would still pull back.
Fortunately for me, I was born under one of the stars that has straight, fine hair, so Linda was able to do the standard hipster cut (quickly) and have it work. But she did it all with a razor (which i wasn't expecting out of the Chop Shop) and did it well.
If you have a lot of hair (or hair that requires a lot of attention), this probably isn't the place for you. It is, however, a great place for men, it would seem.
This was the first time I have been happy with a haircut in years, and it's probably because I went in expecting to hate my $10 haircut. But you know what? I'm happy as a clam. And for only 10 bucks... it'd be worth it to go back just to have my bangs trimmed between cuttings.

Wandering around south street, trying to decide where to get my first haircut in Philadelphia, I came across the Chop Shop. $10 you say? Count me in!
I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, but my cutter did a great job. He listened to exactly what I wanted done and never veered off. We even had a great conversation about video games! How about that?
Within two minutes of walking in the door, I was placed in a seat, waiting for the haircut to commence. It seems like they have a pretty large and friendly staff at all times. The interior is clean and doesn't resemble some of the cheap/skeezy hair joints. I'm sure some people have had horror experiences with terrible cutters, but I can only speak for myself. I'm a simple man and I require a simple cut. This place gets the job done.

As everyone else, I had heard a lot of hit-and-miss remarks about the Chop Shop. However I lucked out and my first appointment there was with Kate.
Kate is amazing. I can tell her what I want to do with my hair and ... well, she doesn't always do it but she does something way cuter and close to what I suggested. Some people might not be okay with this, but I love it.
I had been trying for a while to go from long hair to short hair. Every time I went to a salon I would ask for a "boy haircut." I even started bringing photos of men -- that guy from Smallville -- as examples of how I wanted my hair. I always received horrible bobs. Boy haircut does not = 20's style bob. So I would grow it out and hope for a better stylist next time.
Kate was the only one who listened to my pleas... and then didn't cut my haircut like a boy, she cut it like a low-maintenance girl. For the last year I've been going back to her and letting her do her thing. Each time my haircut is perfect and grows out really well.
Kate is the best!
One suggestion: I wouldn't recommend going to the Chop Shop on a busy afternoon because your haircut might be a little faster and ... well, maybe not their best work. Understandable, right?

I have been going to the Chop Shop every 1-2 months for over two years now, and almost every time I have had a different stylist. Twice I walked out disappointed in the cut, and twice I walked out feeling like I had a really great cut. That should tell you something.
Chop Shop is the kind of place you go to because you like spending $10 on a haircut, you always forget to make appointments (they take walk-ins and they're open seven days a week), and you're not particularly picky about the result. Being that I have very short hair, I know that even a just-OK cut will grow out in a month or so. In the meantime, I rub molding cream in to mess it up, so no one knows how just-OK that cut is anyway. For someone like me, Chop Shop is the obvious and practical choice.
If you ARE picky about your hair, though, I would say this place is not for you. Otherwise you risk getting someone who spaces out while they snip, leaving you to fix it yourself at home.

Close your eyes and take a deep breath, think whatever thoughts put you into a zen state, and then speak to the receptionist. At best you may feel welcome in your quest for a good haircut, but there is the distinct possibility that you may be jarred out of your state of tranquility by the bark of a cute tom-boy who deignfully takes your name. However, the stylists are uniformly pleasant and some particularly good. You should be able to find someone you can stick with here and it's a great value!

A $10 hair cut is nothing to scoff at. However, as Nicole pointed out, The Chop Shop used to be a different animal than it is today. I've noticed in the last year, they give "speed hair cuts"
For $10, you get a walk-in... for $13, you can request somebody. (A little brothel-esque, right?) I don't know... I just learned that after 15 minutes, you better be happy with what they've done... or you'll get a sigh that will feel like a blow-dry.
I always speak highly of The Chop Shop, especially to those that don't look/ask for much in a cut. They have one of the best deals nationwide, and it's ten times cooler than your uncle's barber shop or a Bo-Rics/Hair Hut. But me myself, I have personally taken my business elsewhere... and I don't think they miss me, and I don't miss them.

I've been coming here for a long time. It's open on Sunday! I've settled in to one barber -- Monique -- who gives me a great haircut, fast, every time. Call ahead and make an appointment -- much better than waiting (and I have waited as much as 45 minutes.)
I value the speed aspect. I've had people get lost cutting my hair, and it's always stressful. Great place to people watch.

You can take a gamble when you come here, as you would expect from anywhere you can get a $10 haircut. but for every haircutter that could do a better job, there's usually 2 cutters that do a amazing job. so all you have to do is make note of the cutter you like and arrange appointments with them from that point forward. that way you take care of any problems you may have with this place.
Overall the staff is extremely friendly. and you can't beat a haircut place that's open 7 days a week.

I like going to the chop shop for a basic trim & reshaping of my lil side bangs. I wouldn't really trust them in giving me a whole new look. AWESOME for shape-ups, BAD for crazy new styles! :)

I go to the Chop Shop when I'm strapped for cash and starting to look like a shaggy dog. They are capable of either butchering your hair or doing a great job, it just depends on what star you happen to be born under. You can get funky, bright colors or just a regular old hair cut from newly licensed hair professionals many of whom are on their ways to better places--even to open their own salons.
Don't expect much in the way of frills. Back in the day you had to ask for them to wash your hair before they dug the scissors in. There's nothing worse than walking around with the fiberglass feeling of hair shards digging into your neck and chest, so make sure they brush you off! They are now offering nail and waxing services. Again, proceed with caution.

How I long for the days of a $10 cut. And $60 highlights. Sigh.
My two most dramatic hair moments involve the Chop Shop....and in good ways.
The first time I went to the Chop Shop was after I dyed my hair red. My boyfriend at the time convinced me that deep red was a great color for me....so I gave it a try. And you know what, he was right! It was a great color for me. For three days. Then it faded to this awful orange. I was horrified an immediately tried to get it back to normal but at the time I didn't know you can't go from red to blonde. (silly, silly, girl.) Luckily my hair was salvageable and I have the Chop Shop to thank!
Fast forward a year. I go in and see a different stylist who literally chops my hair off. At least 6 inches.....I went from below shoulder length to a bob. Up until that point the thought of short hair like that horrified me.....but it looked SO good. Now, another girl may have had a panic attack right then and there in the chair but I didn't. I'm glad the stylist pushed the envelope and took a chance. But of course it may not work out like that for everyone.
It's called the Chop Shop so if you are a high maintenance guy/girl who needs to broaden your artistic horizons and impress your friends with a new do every month this is not the place for you. IF, however, you want a consistently good haircut done by a friendly stylist for a GREAT price, then step inside. I've been getting cut there since I moved to Philly and would recommend it to anyone not in the first category.

The only place I goto. It can be hit or miss, but its 10 dollars, and even the misses aren't bad.
If you find a hairdresser you like, you can always make an appointment. I prefer to roll the dice.
I don't know of many (if there are any at all) places in the city where you can get a haircut for $10. For guys, it's not a bad option at all--haircuts for guys are usually pretty straightforward and take about 10-15 minutes. Just like any other place, it's possible to get a bad haircut, but even if you do at least you didn't blow four times as much money at a salon. The good news is that once you find someone there you like, it costs just a few more bucks to request that particular hairdresser.
This place will get a lot of mixed reviews on this site, but I think for $10 you get a decent cut. Sometimes the place can be a bit crowded (on weekends), and you can end up waiting for a bit. Obviously the place has something going for it if sometimes you have to wait for a haircut, right?
Just tried them for the first time the other day. The haircut was $15 which was a bummer since they still have the $10 sign up but they did a good job and the hairdresser I had was really friendly and nice. I'll most likely be going back.

ick. i have been cutting my own hair for over six years. occasionally i'll let a professional make an attempt. i have a bit of salon phobia. unfortunately, this time i chose the chop shop.
i work around the corner so biking home i decided to stop in and see if they had time for me. the counter girl was sort of rude but they were also pretty busy and i was delighted that they actually had a slot for a walk-in.
i didn't expect anything fancy since the most available stylists are usually the worst/newest. there was a girl working there that dressed like boy george. she was finishing up someone's mohawk when i came in and i was semi-hoping i'd be next in her chair. unfortunately, i got seated in front of a woman with a very traditional haircut who also happened to speak poor english. i made it extremely clear what i wanted. no crazy changes...basic trim in the back, clean up the bangs and keep most of the length. i repeated myself a few times just to be sure she got the idea.
SHE USED CLIPPERS ON THE BACK OF MY HEAD!!
my beautiful, piece-y, edgy hair was ruined. the hair that i am asked about at least twice a week. just yesterday someone stopped me on the street to see where i get my hair cut (when the answer was still that i do it myself).
why was my haircut $15 instead of $10? why is my hair four inches shorter than ever? why did i not tackle her for the clippers? why did i ever decide to go back to a salon?

In plain English this place is awful. Way too long of a line for a $10 haircut that will pretty much ruin your day. I understand that you pay for what you get, but I would suggest buying a pair of $10 scissors closing your eyes and chopping away. Who knows, maybe one day you will work at the Chop Shop. Saving some cash and going to an actual stylist would be ideal

I gave this place three tries, and the messed it up 2 outta the 3 times. the last time I was there. She was so busy chit chatting that she took a whole chunk out.. HOW? She was thinning my hair out, and rather then grabbing a pair of thinning shears, she grabbed the regular ones and just lopped it off.. Don't be fooled by the $10 hair cuts.. Their $10 for a reason.. You get what you pay for kids..

Ok, ok, I admit it. I am awful at "being a girl". I don't get my nails done, I get an annual pedicure, and I have been wearing the same black eyeliner/mascara/lip gloss makeup combo since college. I don't keep up with current trends, I don't wear high heels, and I refuse to spend more than $20 on a haircut. This is where the Chop Shop comes in. Before I went into the Chop Shop, I assumed that I was going to be destined for a Supercuts-esque hair massacre. I assumed that the stylist would be prone to whipping out a Flow-bee when I told her I wanted something "funky" and "different". This was thankfully not the case. I have been going to the Chop Shop for two years and always get compliments on the haircut I get from my number one stylist, Kate. She is a pro when it comes to weilding the thinning shears and razor with skill. As long as Kate sticks around, I refuse to get my hair did anywhere else.

the stylist i go to when i am chop shop bound deserves 4.5 stars on her own, but since this supposed to be cumulative, wellll......it gets 3. whenever i would go in, without picking out a stylist, i would come out occasionally....well, pretty grumpy.
now?? i go for audrey. she's awesome possum, and is a fantastic colourist. woot to her!!!
A haircut as low as $10 at a trendy choppery seems like a good deal but they chopped my hair to bits. I have curly hair and too much of it to be cut well in 15 minutes. I went twice and then I had to go to a different place.
while this place has the cheapest prices for a cut, their skill and knowledge basically sucks. they might do a good job for guys but they definitely dont do a good job for girls haircuts.
