Everything looks delicious here. I have tried their soups and burgers. Yummy. Warning thought, the burger that has avocado in it can get extremely messy and soggy.

Oh and its cash only. Oh well.

Choice...Choice Market...how conflcted I am about thee.

Choice undeniably has the best food in the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill area.  But it comes at a price.  Not just the actual cost--which I'd argue is proportional to the extremely high quality--but the tiny bit of my soul that they steal each time I walk through the door.

Hyperbole? Perhaps, perhaps not.  In many ways, they're the only game in town.  In an area where there are virtually no other alternatives for the same, let alone even one fancy, NYC/Williamsburg style gourmet deli or half-decent supermarket--they have ridiculously good prepared foods, coffees, muffins, scones, pastries, cakes and breads.  They have truly beautiful little salads (a Nicoise with lovely new potatoes, for example) meats, sandwiches (a delicious mozzarella panino, among many others) that are dead ringers for their "Little Italian/French" village counterparts.    The menu is impressively diverse and inventive, drawing on Country French and other European influences, and throwing in one-offs like Fish Tacos from time to time.

So what's the problem? For starters, it's unbearably overcrowded nearly every single moment of every single day.  Walk through the door to find it empty one afternoon? Look over the tantalizing assortment of cakes and pies, the fresh seafood, the day's specials written charmingly on the blackboard above, blink for one lil' second--and the place will be mobbed.  You'll be jammed against the wall, the door, the counter people shouting out names of those who have phoned in their orders, the service people coming up from the basement with large bins of ice, produce, who-knows what else, hordes of neighborhood moms with kids in tow crashing in, barking dogs parked out front.  And that's on a good day.  And the ordering process--I've been there 50 times but still can't seem to get it right.  Do they change it every day? It's like an SNL skit.

Seriously though, even the most ardent fan will admit that Choice Market has a horrible overcrowding problem, made worse by the large, haphazardly populated communal table that takes up more than half of the floor space of the room.  These seats (when you can get one) despite the cozy smattering of newspapers and magazines, aren't terribly comfortable, and, seeing as they land you either against the a) door b) assembled throng waiting at the counter and c) the wall, generally involve some sort of compromise between space, volume, comfort and sanity.

That Choice can't be blamed for their own successes is a point that's clearly open to debate; that they've done almost nothing to alleviate the situation is beyond dispute.   To make matters worse, there seems to be a very high rate of turnover with the help at the cash-only counter; this tends to slow things down considerably, and clearly instills a sense of frustration and impatience among the few veteran employees who are there on most days, shouldering the majority of the burden.   Thus it would be unfair to say that the service isn't good--they do seem to be doing the best they can in a lousy situation, and occasionally "attitude" creeps in.   (Granted, Choice has recently opened a nearby market around the block, which is almost never crowded, and takes credit cards, but it lacks the main items that folks visit the original location for--the full service coffee bar, prepared dinners, etc.)

Generally, I'll avoid an extemporaneous trip to Choice Market, and have reduced my encounters to the following: a strained, awkward phone order (the person on the other end clearly rushed and exhausted) and a commando mission where I walk in the front door, head down, huddling for cover while I await my name (yes, shouted), pay my bill with nearly exact change, and hustle home, hopefully before my (delicious) food gets cold.

Is it worth it? I don't know, but I keep going back.

Never had a problem with attitude here.

But I do have a problem with the fact that CHOICE MARKET IS A TEASE!!

I was so thrilled to find this new lunch option. They offer a variety of scrumptious sounding sandwiches, breakfast options, quiches, soups, etc. My brain went into overload thinking about the possibilities. For the trial order, I decided on a steak sandwich with chipotle sauce, avocado and otha great stuff. Fresh squeezed orange juice sealed the deal. The woman who took my order for delivery was fabulously nice, and it arrived within half an hour.

I smelled like chipotle sauce for much of the day, and the steak wasn't in small enough pieces for easy sandwich bites, but I was truly happy with my food.

ONE WEEK LATER

"Hi, I'd like to place an order for delivery."
"Ok, what's your name?"
"Briana"
"What's your phone number?"
"718 555 4898"
"What's the address?"
"Building __, Brooklyn Navy Yard"
"We don't go there. Sorry."

Ok, ok....so choice isn't perfect.  The space is too small, there is only one table and the ordering process can be confusing (do you order at the register? do you order at the counter?  What the hell?)

BUT...that being said, I really, really enjoy the food - and I always get it to go.  Their breakfast sandwiches and french toast are amazing. The made food on the counter is perfect for stopping by for grabbing stuff for dinner on your way home from work or for a nice little picnic.  I particularly like the collard greens, mashed potatoes and beet salad.  The shrimp doesn't reheat that well, but the salmon is good.

It's good for what's in the area, and for what kind of place it is...but it's also just good.

(I also love all the francophones)

I live around the corner from Choice Market and was very excited when it opened up (years ago there was a hair salon in that spot).

They have great pastries and a welcoming environment, and it's a great place to sit outside and people-watch.

I only give it three stars because the dinner food is just ok, the space is a small and it is quite expensive for a take-out place. I had to cut down on my number of visits there after i ordered 4 items and paid almost $30.

I honestly don't understand the fascination with this place.  I think it's totally overrated. I've their pastries and hot chocolate and they tasted just like if I'd gotten them at any other coffee shop, nothing special.

The lines are ridiculous and the sitting is non-existent.  Also, their service is not great.  Those employees need some motivation and reminders that they work in a service job and therefore need to be friendly and polite.

Great place.. i order takeout frequently.. I highly recommend the burger.. I usually go to 67 ..but when going for something more gourmet.. Choice wins.. I love this place.. esp the fries.. I am anxious to try other things..
Only downfall.. over priced sides.. ie.. The broccoli - 1/4 lb for $2.80. which is surprisingly equivalent to 3 florets!

And this is cash only :(

The food is pretty tasty considering your other options in the immediate area.  However, it's constantly crowded, and the wait can be a bit of a deterrent.

Best for takeout as there's a ton of douchebags sitting on the benches outside and not eating anything.

People, this is Brooklyn, not California. The sandwiches are fabulously good and reasonably priced (even more so when you consider what they would cost in San Francisco...sigh...). Okay, so the coffee sucks, and the space is small, but the food, the pastries, the salads...oh my. And this is Brooklyn...not the gentrified Brooklyn, mind you, but the Pratt Brooklyn, so thank God for Choice.

Ordinarily, I'd claim that any complaints regarding service at Choice Market are unfounded.  Fellow customers are the more likely nuisance here.  But then during one visit a couple of weeks ago, I experienced the clusterfuck you may read about in some reviews below.

One woman behind the register was calling for the next order for cooked food, a second back by the kitchen area was simultaneously doing the same.  The random mass of patrons couldn't figure out which way to turn, and this time, I couldn't blame them, as I was equally befuddled by the staff's absence of coordination.

Then, a third woman asked for my order, I hadn't seen her in Choice Market for quite some time, and wouldn't have expected to ever again.  Normally I don't give a second thought to a random face from the past, but this one may posses the most beautiful voice I've ever heard.

I attempted to order eggs of some sort, and was alerted none are served in the afternoon.  As that was to be only the appetizer for my lamb sandwich, I managed not to be unduly dismayed.  I deftly changed the other course to the chocolate croissant and added on my usual large coffee.

After fixing my coffee with a drop of skim milk and another of whole, I inanely contrive questions to ask the siren, simply to hear that lovely voice again.  Perusing the sandwich menu, a not too outrageously foolish question pops into my bumbling mind.

"Hey, I just wanted to make sure you put my order in for the LAMB sandwich, not a ham sandwich, right?"

"Yes, I did."

Such an enchanting voice, I could sit at that communal table between the tyke eating his crayons and the chick with the four eyebrow piercings and listen to the calls of lattes and cappucinos for hours.  But since the weather is fine, I instead take my cup of coffee and bag of foodstuffs and head out the door.

I have a great secret for takeout here, but I just can't share it because it's mine.  It's mine, MINE, MINE!

The lamb sandwich, while not as good as I remember, still satisfies, the leg of lamb sliced thin, a lamby flavor, the fixings pleasing other than the overly thick slice of summer squash.

Sandwiches at Choice are quite good in general, such as the skirt steak and the chicken salad, the biggest complaint being too much or too little of the accompanying sauces.

Croissants, muffins, scones, tend to please as well.  On a rare occasion the almond croissant is a bit...erratic, but when it's on it's the best available baked item.  Coffee is fine, though getting on in the afternoon it can be a bit rank, time for an espresso or such then, just something that's made fresh anyway.

There's a great selection of delicious and healthy veggie side dishes as well, choices like sauteed collard greens or roasted root vegetables or brussels sprouts.

Have I thrown away any remaining shred of credibility by extolling as delicious the brussels sprouts?

Some of the meat or seafood items look like they might be good too, I don't know why I never end up grabbing a nice balanced meal for dinner.

On my next visit, I order a plain croissant with my coffee.  The Voice attempts to bestow me with another chocolate croissant.  My delight in her appearing to remember my past order is ludicrous, especially since it was obviously a simple and excusable error.

Someday I must get this woman to burn a CD of her reading something; something I can play as I'm drifting off to sleep at the end of the night.  I don't care whether it's fairytales or poetry; back issues of The Economist or Miriam Toews.  I just want to listen to that perfect voice send me off into sweet oblivion.

At least that would be an improvement over the dumb white-noise generator I bought from Radio Shack.  I'm bored with the train and the ocean settings and after a while in the background of the "stream" setting is a mumbling fuckyoufuckyou.  In "wind" mode, if you listen long and carefully enough, it would appear there's an undertone of you'reanassholeyou'reanasshole.

Those lowly paid laborers at the electronics factory are sinister bastards, aren't they?

Choice has remained solid since the day they opened.  The owner is committed to making this place a great experience.  Fantastic pastries, cookies, & cakes!  The breads are great also, though are usually all sold out by early-to-mid afternoon, which is a bummer if you're looking to pick one up on your way home from work.

The sandwiches are delicious & humanly-sized (as in, you don't have to save half of it for later because it's huge), the soups, which change almost-daily, are very tasty, & the sides (greens, pastas, meat dishes) are fresh & great, also.  The beef burgers are amazing, as are any of their breakfasts.

Service can be really slow sometimes, regardless of whether or not there is a line (& the line can be really, really long), & some of the staff have attitudes that should be ditched before ever considering a job focused on customer service.  This costs them a star.

Excellent coffee, too!

To the dude who once stood behind me complaining that the pastries/cakes looked like they'd been bought at a store:  walk by Choice at any point at night & you'll see that they're in full swing BAKING AWESOMENESS.

Wow people sweat this place.. I came and had a sandwich.. A roast beef pannini.. I can only judge the place on this sandwich and it was a three at best..

Roast Beef indicates roasted beef, not some dry pot roast.. Served on ok bread, there was something almost inedibly salted in the sandwich. I  thought to myself they must have mistakenly spilled salt on my sandwich.   There was arugula and tomato.. The sandwich had to be eaten immediately because it melted with all the hot mayo and cold tomato juices.

I would not get this again but, other stuff looked good.  Coffee was horrible,.

The cramped room and rather long line for a Wednesday at ten in the morning may put some people off, but clearly it's just the price of admission into one of the most committed eateries to be found in Brooklyn.

Converting an ancient deli into a bakery, without losing the original deli capabilities, is quite a feat. Pre-packaged salad, along with prepared pastas, fish fillets, roast beef, and veggies, are all the first things to see from the end of the queue.

Once those who have made it to Choice ahead of you have shuffled along, and the cupcakes and tarts and sweets have passed by, there's still some exceptional coffee and baked breakfast items to take with you.

An egg sandwich with bacon, goat cheese, tomatoes, and eggs on perfect grain bread grilled to perfection. Such a breakfast sandwich, which in what is probably a nod to the place's history, is the size of a traditional deli sandwich. Along with a smooth and sublime chocolate croissant, along with a strong iced Americano, this place, as Ferris would say, "It is so choice."

Extremely affordable breakfast sandwiches: an egg & goat cheese sandwich on a regular roll, a small latte, a croissant, and a chocolate croissant were all together just under $10.  Amazing croissants, and I would recommend getting your breakfast sandwich on olive bread.  The first time I ordered it with goat cheese, it was minimal; but after that, the cheese was spread out and plentiful, so it may have been a fluke or may depend on who is working.

Overall, cheap and delicious food.  Downfalls: It doesn't take that long to get your food, but there is nowhere to wait, so it feels like longer; it is cash only; it is totally disorganized-- you're supposed to order prepared food at the far counter, but often they don't take it, so people are all over the place. It's worth trying it, thought.

Oh France, I'm so glad you've invaded a corner of Clinton Hill/Fort Greene! Choice Market is one of those places that has their off days, but I won't stop going back. The breakfast items are delicious - bacon, cheddar and egg on a croissant! The whole sandwich is flat-pressed to deliciousness. The omelet is a ton of food - home fries, a salad and a big piece of focciacia (?) with it. Their sandwiches, burgers, and baked goods are also delicious.

But, like I said - they do have their off days. I got a turkey burger instead of the beef burger I so craved (and they were closed by the time I got home and realized it). The strawberry cake I tried was slightly off in flavor. It's a small cafe (and there is some wait time) but I personally love the atmosphere. And I've never encountered the attitude some comment on. They've always been incredibly friendly and cool... But they're French, what do you expect? ;)

I will not be silly about this place because it would be too hard.

Choice exemplifies exactly what a cafe should be in every respect.  Insane food, excellent coffee, fast counter service, excellent atmosphere.  The staff are french or of tha persuasion, so that philosophy definitely works its way into the way things are run.  I can't recommend it highly enough.  They can do no wrong.

It should get six stars!

Choice is really very special.  It's one of those places that you love so much that you wish they could expand expand expand.  I haven't been to the new market they opened, but I'm sure it's a pleasure.

The food is outstanding.  Best BLT I've ever had.  We often get a whole chicken and some random sides... never end up paying more than $20 and it lasts for another lunch and dinner.  My pup loves the biscuits... he even recognizes the bag and goes bananas when I walk out with it!  The service is spectacular considering the tight quarters.  There is a genuine love that resides in this place... you can taste it.

Two things I don't totally love... mushroom scones (and their scone texture in general) and the new sushi thing.  I forgive them... there are about a million other wonderful things they serve that two misses aren't even worth knocking a star.

I love you, Choice... see you Sunday!

i go to choice at least twice a week, often times more. i just love it. LOVE IT!

i mean, what's not to love?

1. the staff is super-friendly. i befriended one guy over a free macaroon (like, the best macaroon of my life), and another lady (she may or may not be the owner) over samples of pasta salad. they all wear 'do rags and speak french to each other, charmingly.

2. there's always good music on that makes you feel like you're transported to the caribbean or jamaica or brazil or some such lovely place.

3. THE FOOD! dear god, the food is amazingly delicious. the grilled skirt steak sandwich, the turkey burger, the pan bagna, the chicken salad sandwich, even their pre-made salads and, of course, the pasta salad, are so tasty that your stomach, albeit stuffed, will smile for hours. i've yet to try the fish or roast chicken or macaroni and cheese, but they're always quite tempting as well.

4. the dessert case is the most beautiful display of baked confections ever. every time i go, i want to buy an entire pear brulee cheesecake, but am stopped by my better judgment and fear of the cellulite that should form should i open that dangerous floodgate. the red velvet cupcakes, however, i have tried and are wonderful. in fact, i don't think there's anything at choice i've had that i didn't love.

5. actually, i take that back...the coffee i don't love, but i don't hate it and i always get it anyway because...i don't know, maybe i'm just a sucker.

yes, it's always crowded on the weekends and most weekdays, but the wait, though long, isn't bad. there's plenty of good people-watching to be had and the ambiance is just so nice that you're not in a rush to get out of there.

The problem with Choice is that it's actually too amazing for the neighborhood.  Hipsters and such basically rape it everyday, fawning all over various coffee drinks and omelettes and flaky whatnots, pushing strollers through where the strollers cannot fit.

Yes, when it opened I was very pleased.  I still am.  Mostly because I know if I'm going to a dinner party or something, there is finally a store close-by that has decent bread.  That and the occasional cookie.

But Oh My God you would think it is the ONLY store for a 15 block radius.  It's like the running of the fucking bulls in there.

Does no one cook anymore?  Have you not seen a steak before?  Truly you will pay $6 a pound for Roasted Potatoes?  Didn't you move to Brooklyn so you could have a kitchen?

I know, this is just a pet peeve of mine.  Everyone talks about what a foodie they are, yet no one cooks.  Or if they do, it's to impress people.

Don't even get me started on "brunch".   My badly cooked $9 omelette (although most places have terrible omelettes) took forever and we ate standing around outside.  Some people don't mind this, I find it infuriating.

But, like I said, it's a good place to pick up great bread, or maybe something sweet, but not in the morning.  No Way.  They shouldn't even have a table in there, really.  It's silly.

I can't even write this review in a coherent way.  I'm going to have to come back to this one.

And, they don't have a toilet for customers.  This pisses me off beyond words. Gasp!

I wish I had tried more of their cakes and breads before they stopped allowing people to squeeze through the kitchen to use their bathroom.  Because I'm not going back...for a while. Out of principle.  I know it's a health department thing and they would probably happily continue to let us tread our grimy feet through the food prep area.  But, but..they... they just have to do something about it!  Or at least express a modicum of regret when you tell me I'm just going to have to hold it.

Honestly, though, I had a breakfast item once - it was waffles or french toast - I think waffles, with fruit, and it was soggy and blah.  Not even memorable enough to remember what form of breakfast dough!

5 Stars for:  The beautiful displays, and real good coffee.

I don't always go here, because I am constantly running behind schedule and they take a bit longer than other coffee places.. but that's because there is usually a line because it is soooooo good!

Their coffee is my favorite in the neighborhood, hands down. They have the good soy milk for you to add to it as well (lots of places have either none or some gross kind), their pastries are scrumptious.. pretty much everything they have here is really really delicious.

But like I said before, you do have to have the time to wait in line, and there is not always a place for you to sit (1 beautiful family style table inside, a couple of comfy large benches outside).
Did I mention it is really beautiful in there? I like it.

This place will make your mouth water, just thinking about it. I feel like a kid in a grocery store checkout line when I'm approaching the till....."oh this looks delicious, oh that sounds good, I think I'll get one of those for the road, oh gee I forgot about these....." - when all I intend on getting is a cup of coffee.

Choice is what its name implies - full of choices. You can't go wrong here, whether you want fruit, pastries, breakfast, lunch, dinner....the selection is always overwhelming, in a good way. The staff is always working hard too, if my order takes a little while, I know it's because they're busy and not slacking off. Delicious - worth every penny (and they don't charge too many pennies).

Add stars for providing soy milk at their coffee-doctoring station......that balances the 2 stars I would've taken away because their coffee isn't very good.....I think maybe they brew their coffee after having brewed tea through their machine? Who knows, but the coffee does have a weird minty taste from time to time, and is a bit watered down---it's scalding hot too, be careful unless you want those dang burned bumpies on your tongue!

Choice Market - certainly one of my first choices for food in the area, but the name implies that it is a market, which I don't think it really is, but maybe I am wrong.  What Choice Market is, is a lil corner store that serve breakfast lunch and dinner and assorted snacks.

The store itself has a warm country store atmosphere; rustic wood community dinning table included.  Too the left is the register and many bakery items: assorted cookies, muffins, cupcakes, and what appears to be fresh breads.  Straight ahead is a deli case filled with fresh main courses and sides ready "to go".  And finally to the right are the coolers; one for drinks, and one for salads.  Also to the right is that large table.

I have only been a few time and sampled a few things, but Choice Market is a great place.  While I have never been blown away with anything, I know it will welcome me after a long day when cooking isn't an option and the comfort of my couch is what I need.  I think they deliver too.  I may try that soon enough.  I like going personally though because seeing the options that day is half the fun.

The one unfortunate thing is that service is similar to a country store too, slow, and a little unreliable.

Chicken - good taste, a bit what?  Dry.
Macaroni and Cheese - OK but I think they must use sour cream, not my fav.
-Green Beens - great taste, cooked right
-Cupcakes - A bit dry and a tiny bit bland but flavors and frosting are pretty on point
-Lemon Meringue - Not my fav.

So far the foods been fair, but I'm keeping the 4 stars cause...well...whatever, I can.

Update: I'm takiing away a star - they're now down to one - because, well, they're just so damned stupid there.

In case the owners of Choice are reading: please find employees that can move faster than someone swimming through glue, and please find folks that understand the meaning of "multitasking". That is all.

Oh, and the quality of the food is slipping pretty badly, too. No more Choice for me, even if my pals really, really want me to go.

-----original review------

The food and baked goods are the best in the neighborhood, if you can deal with some silliness...

The service is super slow. The crowd is irritating on the weekends - hey parents, don't wheel your Hummer-sized stroller into a small space, OK? Don't count on seating either inside or out.

Also, they only deliver when they feel like it. They only take credit cards when they feel like it (I'm serious!)  So, despite what it says on their menu or website, assume that you'll be paying cash, and that you'll be taking out. They lose a star for being arbitrary :)

A good choice during off-peak times, or when you're in the mood for some chaos.

It's very impressive for such a small place to provide the output that they do - every time I've gone in, the place is a rotating plethora of customers, constantly packing the place to the gills.

I've noticed though, that in their haste to serve all of these people
- My lattes are consistently WAY too hot, and I can't take a sip for quite awhile before they cool down.
- It's a half hour wait, on average, for hot food.  And sometimes it isn't even that hot.
- The cakes are a little dry, as if they'd had too much oven time, or could use a little more syrup soak.

I feel like if they maintained a much more truncated menu, they would be putting out some of the best food in Brooklyn.

Oh my god, I want to get one of everything; I'll have one of every scone, muffin, croissant, roll, pie, tart, bunt cake, pastry, bread, yes, please.  Their made-to-order savory fare of omelets and brunchy stuff is quite nice though you will be hard pressed to find a table or chair to enjoy it at, but if you are patient, something will free up.

This joint is cute and bumping and could be a tad more efficient in the service department, though its charm would probably suffer as a result.  Accepting credit cards would also be really convenient.  Who carries cash around anymore?

But the secrete awesomeness of Choice Market is that after 5pm, muffins, scones and croissants are all $1!  Freakin' amazing and still very fresh.  And their 80 cent rolls of pecans and raisins are lovely.

God this place is amazing.  You just have to go there and try it yourself.

The pastries.  The coffee. The red velvet cupcakes.  It can be a bit too "parental" with all the yuppies and their strollers trying to be hip but other than that, grab a seat and enjoy.
