CASH ONLY, fyi - for you review skimmers.
Speaking of 'skim', its the kind of milk you're gonna have to start putting in your lattes after sampling the MANY incredible pastries offered at Choice (some of which are offered at Choice Greene around the corner). I can't even lie about it at this point - I'm addicted. I have blissful dreams of savoring their macroons; how they packed a million-dollar taste into a one-dollar treat is beyond comprehension. Their fresh baked cookies (chocolate chip, and the chocolate brownie) caused a relapse of my choco-holism. They also make two of the best muffins around: the lemon ginger is zesty and delicious, and the blueberry crumb is ree-dick-you-luss.
But this isnt even their strong suit; the prepared foods are outlandish. I'd like to rave about all the side dish fixins, but I must admit I havent even 'scratched the surface' in this regard - I've been busy satisfying a Pavlovian response to their sandwiches and burgers. Holy hot mess, Batman!
--that being said, do yourself a favor and GO THERE. just. go. there. now.

This place is overpriced, overrated but worst of all is the staff. They really go out of their way to be rude. It's almost like they are trying to out do each other.
Go next door to Urban Vintage for better coffee, pastries and vibes. -
Review from Sandy J.
I've tried other dishes/items, but haven't gotten around to writing an update until now. Their burgers were good, but very messy. They also come with fries.
I love Love LOVE their SALMON SANDWICH! That's pretty much the only thing I order now, since I've tried the rest.
Everyone has a preference of their favorite though. My one friend still ONLY orders the veggie burger. One of my other friends only gets their BLT and another that cannot get enough of their chicken panini. So, you can't go wrong with any of their sandwiches.
Downfall...I am not a fan of their brioche and was a bit peeved that they charged an extra dollar to change the bread. Cashiers are still asses and their line system is still chaotic during peak eating times.
They also give you a discount for muffins and croissants after 5pm.
If I was rating the entire experience (food, service, vibe, etc.), I'd really give them 3 stars. However, since I'm in love with the salmon sandwich, I'm willing to overlook their flaws.Listed in: Good Brooklyn Eats

Beware: this is not 'fast' food- it's a LONG wait after you order, and rarely you'll be able to sit. But the coffee is very quick, unlike Urban Vintage around the corner.
This place has GREAT coffee ($1.50 french pressed coffee and $1.75 espresso), and the food is not too bad. I've had a mozzarella panini, which was fantastic. But the most recent order, I had a veggie burger, which came on a stale bun and with a weird, curry-like mayo which just didn't quite work.
Unlike other reviewers, I found the staff to be pleasant, friendly and pretty darn funny, if slightly aloof.
For now, I give it 4 stars. -

It's very convenient for the neighborhood, and the selection is great. But I can see why they got a B rating. I watched a cook walk out from behind the counter, hold the door open for guests, stood outside and talked, went & got some precooked wrapped chickens on a spit from storage, open the front door again, go behind the counter, and start making food again. All this with the same pair of sweaty latex gloves on.
Also the old pastries sometime take on the flavor of what has been cooking in the kitchen.
Lastly, attention to detail could be better, found roots and vines still on my potatoes, feathers on the chicken, and grit in the vegetables.
Overall nice place, but they need to clean up their act, and attend to details. -

I'd pop this up to five if buying food hear wasn't so financially painful. This place has amazingly delicious everything. Turkey burger? Get out of town.. we're talking legitimate amazingness in your mouth. A $2 large coffee seems market, that I can handle on my way to work/class, but the $9 panini that is oh so delicious and would make me feel better if I only forked over $7... that'll keep me from eating here too much.
I'm a huge fan of their quiches, I would say I'm at addict status at this point. Breakfast? Solved. -
Review from Steve N.
My first visit was a revelation. I had a veggie burger take-away. The price was less than $8, and it was unlike any veggie burger I had before. The one quality best for this review was that it had the savory messiness of a beef burger. The side fries were fine, too. The second visit was take-away from the ready-to-eat case, a bombay chicken salad, chickpea side salad, and a coffee for $14. The bombay chicken salad was excellent with a wonderful sweet mustard-y dressing. The chickpea salad was a revelation. I had never considered this serving style. The chickpeas were cooked where a little crispness remained. Carrots, celery, and yellow bell peppers added to flavor and crunchiness. I think its a good value, and finally met and maybe exceeded Eatzi's in Dallas as a place for ready-to-eat food.

Wonderful place for great food and coffee. The baked goods look like they were cut out of Martha Stewart's magazine. We've had two great breakfast here so far. The quiche and the market breakfast.
The quiche just might be the best quiche I've ever had.
The market breakfast, is an a la carte style you pick and choose what you'd like. It starts with eggs and kaiser roll.
The house coffee is great too. -

I've been going to choice for years! It certainly had never failed my expectations when it came to the food. I LOVE their paninis and burgers. It is kind of expensive, however the food is worth it, you'd definitely be full from their servings. The dishes that are premade at the front, i usually don't order them since they are EXTREMELY expensive in my opinion, but the occasional hanger steak really solves my cravings.
As for the C in the health inspection, i don't think i'd really mind it too much, since i do see them cleaning and making fresh food by 4-5am. Not like they wipe the food on the floor before giving to the costumers .... So...it's aite. haha -
Review from Erica T.
Choice currently has a C from their most recent health inspection.
One of the violations: "Evidence of mice or live mice present."
I live around the corner from Choice and used to be a regular. The C in the window, an insane turn off. I don't mind waiting a while for a sandwich to be made, but definitely not at a C rated establishment.
C is for Choice, B is for Boycott. Congratulations Choice on making it on the boycott list. When you bring your letter up, I'll be back. -

Had the BLT and a Latte!! BLT was AWESOME!! There was sufficient BACON and the lettuce and tomato was FRESH and the rosemary dressing was delicious! Panini was toasted to perfection. The latte was rich, smooth, hot, creamy and delicious!! Although the "market" is small, the crowd was pleasant and friendly. The customer service was good-they greet you with a smile and with manners!! I will be back....SOON!!

In my opinion- one of the top cafe's in Brooklyn period! But they're now so popular they have more than one location. Stick to the one in Clinton Hill. It's where the magic happens!

Pros: excellent egg sandwiches, to-go salads, fresh pastries, & coffee. Good atmosphere.
Cons: overcrowded, cash-only, unpredictable staff (could be lovely one day, then rude and abrasive the next) and in my experience the food--besides the great stuff mentioned above--has been sub par.
Invaluable addition to the neighborhood and a great morning spot, but could be expanded and improved in many ways. -

A friend said they heard they have the best Blt in the city and well, i love bacon! So we made the treck out to try it for ourselves.....
It delivered! Everything from the bacon itself to the bread they use to the Rosemary mayo (amazing!) hit the spot big time.
Plenty of other items on the menu that i would love to go back and try as well......
I like the atmosphere here too..not much seating, a big table you can share with others which forces conversation....i'm a fan! -

There is no way to get food from this place without waiting at least 20 minutes, though it's usually closer to a half hour.
I vowed to stop going but walked by the other day and saw that there was absolutely no one in there - "surely it couldn't take longer than 5 minutes to get a sandwich," I thought. Well, 20 minutes later when I asked if they had made any progress on my sandwich - "the lunch special" - they seemed confused and then realized they had made the wrong thing - some sort of pasta dish. Instead of apologizing and trying to get my order made quickly, they kind of laughed and bickered amongst each other. By then a bunch of other people had come in and my order somehow got demoted to the back of the line. If I hadn't already paid I would have walked out. Instead I had to wait another 20 min. Close to an hour for a sandwich when there was literally NO line! I've gone through the trouble of retelling this because it's the norm - not the exception at this place.
The food is quite good though, I should say, if you're ok ignoring their recent C rating... Maybe just grab their croissants, which actually are amazing and should only take, oh, about 10 minutes to get. -

I went in once than turned around once I saw the "C" inspections rating in the window. I walked by again a week later and decided to eat there anyway because it had such a long line both times.
Ok the C inspection is really bad but the burger was like the best thing Ive EVER had. Also the desserts are really good. -

I don't understand previous reviews regarding the service & staff. Maybe I just came on the right day because everyone & everything was fabulous. If I had one complaint it'd be the place is a tight squeeze. I ordered the waffles and sat at the long single table by the window, between a cute couple and a women reading the day-old newspaper. The waffles were tender with a crispy edge and practically melted in my mouth. The staff was nice, personable and had a familiarity with a few of the people coming in. It's a great place to get something to eat but have a plan b for where you'll eat it.

Armed with a recommendation from Jonah L., we set out to grab breakfast at Choice. It was a chilly and ridiculously windy morning, but a little inclement weather wasn't going to stop us!
The place was packed when we got there (somewhere on the early side of noon on a Saturday), but we managed to get our order in relatively quickly. The bacon, egg & cheese on a roll was highly recommended, so we each opted for one of those. We rounded out our order with a couple croissants (regular & chocolate) and some coffee. There weren't any seats available to eat there, so we opted to get our breaky to go.
Everything was outstanding! The egg, bacon & cheese on the roll is amazing, and comes out super-crispy (it's pressed panini-style). The croissants were buttery pieces of heaven, and the coffee was pretty damn good too. Definitely worth the trip. If lived in the neighborhood, I'd make Choice my go-to breakfast place!Listed in: NYC, Fool!

Update- July 2011: Do they really have a C health inspection rating? Unacceptable. I'm removing two stars.
--------
April 2011 (3 stars):
I'm actually leaning more toward 2 stars, but I'm feeling generous today. I must have gone during peak hours (about 8:30 on a Wednesday night) because this place was packed. Like, people-stepping-on-each-other packed. I'm fairly new to the neighborhood, so I guess there's not much else to choose from around here, huh? (Maybe they should change their name to The Only Choice Market.)
The wait was pretty long I guess, but I don't really mind waiting, or rather, wouldn't have minded waiting if it weren't for all the other people right on top of me. I was going to eat there but I ended up hauling ass back home as soon as my order was ready because I wanted to breathe again.
On another note, nothing here is vegan as far as I could tell. I ended up getting a veggie burger and even that wound up having cheese on it--a not-very-pleasant surprise for me. (In their defense, the chalkboard menu did say that the veggie burger had cheese on it, but it was kinda scrawled in this itty bitty handwriting and I thought it was part of the description for another item on the menu. Oops, I was wrong.)
So, in summary, this place was fine, I guess, but I surely wouldn't go out of my way for anything they have to offer. -

Delicious sandwiches but beware the cupcakes
I love the sandwiches here -- every one I've had is amazing -- but today I splurged for a vanilla cupcake, from the very far end of the case, near the savory food items. I took it home, and alas, the icing tasted like salmon! They're definitely keeping the sweets too close to the savories, and the flavors are mixing.
I also love their homemade bread -- but, Choice guys, $14 for a loaf of 7 grain? Seriously? Even if it is longer than your average loaf (but the pieces are also smaller!). I don't mind splurging $7 for a delicious BLT once in awhile, but $14 for a loaf of bread feels insulting, especially in this economy.
All coffee beverages, however, are subpar.
That said, it's worth the wait for a sandwich. -

When ordering food, always order directly from the kitchen. The counter can really only handle coffee and pastries, and have completely forgotten my food order before. The kitchen is clearly high-minded in its ingredients, but it is incredibly slow for an upscale neighborhood cafeteria.
The mac and cheese, and burgers, are terrific. That said, I've waited 20 minutes just for pre-cooked mac and cheese to be warmed up, and 30 or more minutes for a burger. I've also had the chipotle chicken and the stuffed rotisserie chicken, and both were okay. The large coffee for only $1.75 is mostly what keeps me coming back. -

Unfortunately this place has made it onto my boycott list. Overpriced, slow and very confused service. Even their dog biscuits suck. The coffee and pastries are good but not worth the experience. Their cakes are overpowered with alcohol so stay away unless you're into that kind of thing.

The crowd wasn't too bad. Orders were taken quickly. Wait time for food though... long. The bacon, egg and cheese on a bagel was OK. Not great. A bit greasy. Bagel - just ok.

Food was ok. I didn't feel their cooked food menu was that great. The flavors and textures didn't seem to blend well. E.g. hearty meats with delicate breads etc.
In addition, service here is horrible. Expect to wait at least an hour for your order to arrive, no matter how much you ask for your food. A lot of the staff members also have a bit of an attitude problem. So watch out for that.
Beware of anything custom made. They don't seem to care and there's a good chance they'll screw it up.
If you really need to get something here, I would recommend the pastries as they were good and inspirational and didn't require a long wait. -

Moved to clinton hill back in november and was I introduced to choice by my girlfriend shortly thereafter. This place reminds me of some of my favorite neighborhood spots from where I used to live in chicago. Decent selection, reasonable prices, and a distinctively hip (but not hipster) feel.
For breakfast, I've only had the croissant sandwich with bacon, egg, and cheese. Very simple, but perfectly done. Not overly cheesy or buttery, but rather a great combination of ingredients. Friend who was visiting from out of town raved about the omelets, but I haven't yet sampled.
On the rare occasions that I go for lunch, I always get the salmon burger. The flavor is fantastic, with a nice slice of ginger sitting right underneath whatever mayo/aioli concoction they dress it with. Only (slight) drawbacks are that the lettuce and tomato seem to get in the way of the goods (but I don't like lettuce and tomato on ANY sandwich, so I'm hardly impartial, and I can always ask for them not to put it on, right?) and that the bun, while flavorful, could be a little less dense. Fries that accompany the burger are okay, but certainly nothing special.
For dinner, mac and cheese is a must. Quite possibly the best I've ever had. Bechamel sauce is very well done, with just the right amount of nutmeg. Also, it's tasty enough that you don't feel like you need a ton of it. The serving size is perfect.
Salmon is typically a little too done for my taste, but even still it's well seasoned. Meatloaf special that they sometimes have is fantastic. Tastes a little sausagy, which helps keep it interesting. Wouldn't recommend the beef though (can't remember whether it was prime rib or filet). Too tough and didn't taste like a quality cut of meat.
Overall, very happy with the offerings at choice and glad that it's just a 5-minute walk from my apt. -

Brooklyn, NY
The best thing about this place is not: the luscious freshly baked cakes, the light and fluffy pastries, the freshly ground coffee, the to die for lunches or even the fact that it opens (when a bakery is meant to) at 6am....nope. The best thing about this place are the bad ass Brooklyn lbj's (little brown jobbies- birds) that bathe in the dogs water bowl and saunter over, TWEET TWEET TWEETING their demand for their share of your spoils.
If you like savoury food you must try the Ham Croissant (basically a Croque Monsieur) which is the best one I have ever had. Their chocolate cheesecake brownie is amazing and their cupcakes are off the chart good.
Basically I love this place and have started coming at least once a week on a Saturday or Sunday morning. -

I like to walk to Choice, grab a coffee and a BLT sandwich, and walk back home knowing I am about to enjoy unparalleled deliciousness and decent coffee.
So yeah, I like the BLT quite a bit. The chocolate croissant was good too, though not as chocolately as I was expecting. I also tried a coconut cookie of some sort. It was OK, but that's speaking more to my passive view on coconut, not the ability of the workers at Choice to make a scrumptious treat.
I like the French accent on some of the people here, but I took French in high school so I might be biased. -

So I had this place on bookmark for awhile cause brooklyn is like another country to me... But alas, i had the chance to roll through and there it was. Choice Market 3.4 miles away as shown on my crappy 3GS iPhone....
I can see why there are so many mixed reviews. The time I went was mid afternoon on a Saturday. After the hustle and bustle of the morning brunch crowd i suppose. I didn't have to wait on line. What took me time was deciding on what to get. The menu boards above provide a smorgasbord of selection. To make it harder, there are pastries and meats displayed all over the place to make the decision even harder. I can see that if the place was busy that there would be mad confusion and frustrations. There is only one communal table that seats about 8 - 10 and some seating outside. I think it's more of a takeout spot.
We ended up getting the Salmon burger with fries. It was good but not spectacular. Like a big salmon cake. The fries are okay as well.
The honey glazed ham panini though was not really good. First it's drenched with honey mustard and the pieces of ham are just too thick and fatty. The drenching of the mustard makes the lettuce too moist and not to my liking.
There seems to be lots of other items on the menu that I may like. The chipotle roasted chicken on display looked delicious. I had to get one of the pastries to go so i went with the raisin danish. Looked really good on display but expectations were not met. It was quite bland and doughy....
I doubt I would be back since Bklyn is usually not on my radar and this place is not worth a special trip back. Heck if I saw a line or crowds, I think I would just bypass it all together. -

Nothing like good, hot soup on a blustery day and Choice's carrot ginger soup definitely did the trick and was a steal at 3 bucks, along with a nice little roll. I'm quite certain they mistakenly gave me the large size cup rather than the small--my soup had to have been 12 ounces, but would gladly spend the money for even half the size.
Unfortunately the chickpea salad I got was pretty bad. The chickpeas themselves were undercooked, not quite to the point of in-edibility but, almost. Also the vegetables/dressing mixed in with them had started to go off; i.e. the salad must have been many days old. It's a shame because the flavors were otherwise good. I was starving, ate half the package, and then lamented I did. If it weren't blizzard-like I would have walked back and demanded a replacement. Note I believe the same packaged salad I had was also available by the pound. There are a variety of salads, vegetables, grains behind the counter in glass bowls, sold by weight, many of which looked great. I would imagine that those are fresher than the salads that are packed in the refrigerator case.
My sister lives in Clinton Hill so I'm sure I'll be back to try their goods again and will avoid any of the already packaged salads then. -

This was the first meal I ate upon arriving in New York City. I had the mozzarella panini with fresh tomato and basil and it was scrumptious. Definitely recommended.
The place is small and the only seating is a large table surrounded by some chairs, so you'll end up sitting with random strangers. My boyfriend and I just barely beat the lunch rush and we managed to get two seats next to each other.
All of the pastries looked very, very good as well.
I'd probably offer up 5 stars but it's cash only, which is always a bummer for me. -

I despise this place. Rude staff, even ruder patrons and mediocre food and coffee at best.
BUT - I hope this place stays in business and thrives for a long time though because it seems to be a mecca for this kind of person and that means they all stay corralled in one easily identifiable and easily avoidable location.
Hands down the worst coffee shop in Fort Green. This place and the people who love this place are everything that sucked the coolness out of Fort Green. Oh yeah, there are no "hipsters" here...there are however a bunch of trendy young white people who act like because they read the arts section of the Times and live in a condo in Ft. Green they know a thing or two about something. All they really know about is how to act rude, pretensions or arrogant because they think that's how real New Yorkers are. Personally I can do without the post-modernism ideals behind your personalities. I like real people.
If you wanna skip the attitudes of the staff and customers and see what a real coffee shop in Brooklyn is like - then walk 4 doors down to URBAN VINTAGE. These folks know whats up. -

Unfortunately Choice Market is not up to par. It has great food but poor, poor service. Long lines of waiting, hungry people shouting, hostile workers, occasional French glares, and coffee supposedly brewing when you really should already be on the subway five minutes ago. It is hard to believe that this market/coffee shop is constantly buzzing with business, when it takes about two hours to get a tomato basil sandwich. On top of the impolite workers, long wait, and brewing coffee, you get your daily pretentious-untrendy-unhip neighborhood 30+ art fools. Next to their chai latte, croissant, and powerbook, you notice their New Yorker, misc philosophy texts, and the ocassional yappy dog. BON APPETIT!

Don't let the long lines (they deliver? - bonus!) or too-cool-4-school hipsters deter you =----- THIS PLACE RULES!
Breakfast? Don't wait in brunch lines to pay $18 for eggs at sit down places. Come to choice and get a bacon, egg, & cheese on a roll. Roll, you say? Sounds lame? No, it's panini-toasted and perfectly crispy. Sit outside in the sun and watch the artsy hipster parade of Pratt students, while the projects across the street add authenticity to their "we're not in Park Slope anymore" sense of superiority.
Pastries? Cakes? Macaroons? Check! Yummy, pricey, do it.
Savory? Besides the yummy burger and salmon burger, you can get lots of their gourmet little by-the-pound selections behind the window. Which can be roasted brussel sprounts, hanger steak, fish selections. You'll think you died and went to hipster heaven. -

My go to items: Chocolate chip cookie, double chocolate cookie, brownie, pear cheesecake, tres leches cake, burger w/ fries, chicken panini, buffalo wings (when they had them), and mac n cheese. There are a few other items I can't think of at the moment but everything I have had I have enjoyed thoroughly and introduced many others to. I RARELY ever go there in person I get delivery sometimes 4x a week so it pisses me off they don't remember my name/#...other than that, I have no problems w/ this place AT ALL. In fact, they're amazing.

Never had a problem with attitude here.
But I do have a problem with the fact that CHOICE MARKET IS A TEASE!!
I was so thrilled to find this new lunch option. They offer a variety of scrumptious sounding sandwiches, breakfast options, quiches, soups, etc. My brain went into overload thinking about the possibilities. For the trial order, I decided on a steak sandwich with chipotle sauce, avocado and otha great stuff. Fresh squeezed orange juice sealed the deal. The woman who took my order for delivery was fabulously nice, and it arrived within half an hour.
I smelled like chipotle sauce for much of the day, and the steak wasn't in small enough pieces for easy sandwich bites, but I was truly happy with my food.
ONE WEEK LATER
"Hi, I'd like to place an order for delivery."
"Ok, what's your name?"
"Briana"
"What's your phone number?"
"718 555 4898"
"What's the address?"
"Building __, Brooklyn Navy Yard"
"We don't go there. Sorry."

Choice Market literally owned my soul for a few years. Why you ask? Personally, there is always a good reason to stop in at any hour of the day whether it be a scone and tea in the morning, or a yummy BLT with rosemary mayo for lunch, or to grab something sweet like a few French macaroons.
However, the only thing I detest is the spotty service. It's far too inconsistent from day to day. One day they're really friendly, other days I feel death glares penetrating right through me. One day my order takes 10 minutes, another day the same order takes 45. No worries though. Like a sore scab that I keep touching, I will keep coming back. Choice Market is that good.
P.S. Please bring back your Tres Leches cake.
