It's amazing that this place is so tiny yet I always find what I'm looking for. Excellent selection of vegetables, pasta and assorted goodies. Their prepared sushi is killer, and most of their products are local or from independent companies. Their bread selection is also very awesome.
I don't eat meat but even that stuff looks good here.
There are two distinguishing features of Choice Greene which are the appeal to me. One is the moderately priced fish counter. The other will go unmentioned in this review. Other than that this little shop is mainly suited for window shopping.
It's the kind of place where you'll find a $9 jar of pasta sauce from some not yet up-and-coming celebrity chef or a $7 bite-sized bit of shade-grown fair-trade chocolate from Ecuador picked by under-employed dwarves.
You can get a full meal in a restaurant in Ecuador for two bucks or less, but ship an ounce of candy to the US and promise to donate 10% of your profits to some fake Indian tribe and suddenly it's "fair trade" value is $7. Fair trade for whom?
I think I once actually paid $5 for a stick of Irish butter in here. It didn't even claim to be organic or cage-free or to donate 10% of their profits to Dublin orphans, but I still bought it. Yes, I'm an idiot.
The most offensive item they've ever sold in here was $4 single-serving cups of yogurt from Iceland. Didn't Iceland's economy recently collapse? Were all those articles I read written by psuedonyms for Jayson Blair? Am I the only one who thinks it's unreasonable for a nation to expect to restore their entire GNP via a few cases of dairy products?
Maybe I'm just bitter because when I went to Iceland, it was with a girlfriend in tow. A country with so many Miss Universes per capita it makes Venezuela look like a land of Broom Hildas and I go there when I'm involved. Have I mentioned I'm an idiot?
Iceland is in the middle of nowhere and there are like, 9 available guys on the whole island. And the women there have already plowed their way through and then dumped each one of them 3 times. The ones they ever wanted in the first place, anyway. Could there possibly be a situation more rife with women starving for fresh dick?
Guys, I implore you, if your woman ever says to you "let's go to Iceland for our next vacation," find someway; anyway to change her mind. Otherwise you're entire trip promises to be abound with exchanges such as the following I had with that petite brunette former girlfriend.
"New York is SO much more interesting. All the women here are the same! They're all tall. And blond!"
"Yeaaaahhhhh."
Well; almost all the women in Iceland are tall and blond. I saw the two most savage women in my life being denied entry to a club there. They were average height and dark haired, of course. I almost might have been afraid for the bouncer if not for the resigned smirk on his face.
Which pretty much said, "Yep, just another night in Reykjavik. All the women here are tall, blond and stuck-up. Or psycho and wish they were. I've gotta get off this isolated wasteland if I'm ever gonna get laid again."
Thankfully that yogurt appears to have been pulled from the shelves. I guess even the biggest uber-Brooklyn-libtard has their limits. Just catching a glimpse that stuff out of the corner of my eye as I was carrying my sea scallops or stuffed branzino to the register couldn't have been too good for my blood pressure.
It probably makes little sense that I'm pleased to have Choice Greene in my neighborhood. The produce isn't exactly cheap and as mentioned it's often past its prime; when the greenmarkets are done for the season I may get my veggies from the supermarket. I'm not a cheese eater so that acclaimed cheese counter isn't much use for me. And I can hardly justify buying much of anything else here at the prices charged.
But when I see Choice Greene between the hole in the wall deli with all its long-time resident patrons and the tattoo parlor; pardon me, tattoo gallery, somehow it...belongs.
Perhaps the gentleman who ordinarily works the aforementioned cheese counter, but on one lovely spring day rang up my king salmon and ruby reds, summed it up best. As he handed me my change and receipt he said more or less the following after I answered fine to his how-are-you-doing:
"Yeah, it's a beautiful day, and all of Brooklyn is out there for us."
Yep. Exactly.
Whatever Choice Greene may be, it's got Brooklyn written all over it. And Brooklyn is a fine place to be.
God bless America's 4th largest city.
I already gave Choice Greene five stars, so there's not much to improve -- but I wanted to revise my opinion of the sushi, which I had said was too generous in the fishy to rice ratio. I'm totally in love with it now and don't know if my taste changed or it's changed. Either way, the fish is so fresh and the combinations are super delicious. I mean, the chef is from Blue Ribbon, so I guess it's to be expected, but I'm loving the spicy tuna, the salmon and avocado, and any of the sashimi. Plus, they make this ridiculous cured salmon which you can buy raw or already cooked that just upped my addiction to their fish stuff. I love.

Took me 15 minutes standing in line to purchase a baguette for $2.75.. Yikes.

expensive would be the first thing that pops into my mind grapes.
As an avid cook who lives nearby, I was totally excited when CG opened. It started off a little rocky and seems to have gotten worse, not better. The cheese and charcuterie are great to have in the neighborhood, and the fish is usually pretty good--even though they often screw up on cutting portions (any fish guy should be able to cut a six- or eight-oz piece of fish, IMO). The bread is decent as well. Everything is priced on the high side (sometimes way too high) but I understand it's a small neighborhood shop.
The produce is an abomination. Why do they even have wilted produce on display? And the pricing makes no sense--they pre-package items and post signs for the price per pound, but the packages themselves do not have a price tag. Going to pay is like Russian Roulette--you don't know what the tab will be.
The pricing is also really, really weird--one day corn is $2 an ear (ridiculous!), and the next day it's $.50. They were also recently selling some kind of fancy Icelandic water for $8 A LITER!!! Why bother?
Bottom line, no one seems to be in charge, and save for the young, very sweet cashiers, the staff turns over constantly.
I really hoped I could count on Choice Greene so that I could avoid the nearby awful grocery stores as much as possible. But sad to say, produce and other items at the Pioneer are often better than Choice Greene. So what bugs me the most is that it's not one-stop shopping--not even close. I'm still hoping they'll get their act together.
Sampled some Choice Greene goods at a friend's place and had to visit for myself. Amazing cheese and meat (for affettato) selection, friendly staff, lovely produce and (although I did not try it) a well groomed fish counter.
I was so excited to see salami from Molinari & Sons, a legendary Italian deli I great up on in San Francisco, hummus from Williamsburg (the Pinoli is so good) and bread from Il Forno.
Another notch on the ole Brookly belt for me, and I will be back for more!
I think I'm in LOVE.
SCRATCH THAT. I KNOW I'm in love!
Choice Greene is finally open and I'm in looooooove.
It's a tiny little grocery, with quality essentials like imported teas, fresh flowers, fresh fish, fresh veggies, and the best part??
A CHEESE COUNTER!!!!!!!!
Not only was the cheese selection tremendous, the prices are reasonable and the recommendations were outstanding! I left happy with a wedge of Navet (French sheepsmilk cheese) and a wedge of Prima Donna (a hard, sharp kind of gouda/parmesan/hard cheddar, hard-to-place cheese) and both are AMAZING.
I love Cheese and love Choice and I love LOVE!
Friendly clerks, helpful recommendations, and an assurance that they plan to carry a bunch more stuff and to keep checking back...
I can't believe it's right around the corner in MY HOOD!
Should I gush some more?
I walked in, browsed and walked out. I was underwhelmed. The prices are high for produce and it isn't a one stop shop. It is definitely a cute little place though.
They do have a good cheese selection. I would normally head to the Bedford Cheese Shop but now I can walk over to CG, which is awesome. Oh, and you can buy bacon buy the pound, which is cool.
The fish didn't look all that great and they were selling cajun seasoned tilapia for $10.99/lbs which is just outrageous.
Cute little store so wandered in. It's one of those places which you may pick up special something that you'll never find at Met Grocery albeit at a price.. But what got me excited was the fish counter. The guys had free samples of a Spanish Mackerel marinated and partially grilled. Amazing and worthy of being served in an expensive restaurant, not as a freebie at the back of a store.
Ended up buying some Monk-fish and squash to make a curry and wasn't disappointed. Seems to help fill a large gap that exists in these hoods.
Love the cheese selection and the meats - check out the duck pate, smoked duck, chorizos, bacon and the fish is fresh and outstanding. Thanks for opening!
Hey Choice Greene, I really love you. You are staffed by lovely people and fill a crucial niche in our neighborhood. I just want to get that out there.
But recently the produce has been going downhill-- fruits and vegetables well beyond their prime. Your produce offerings are part of what make you such a great store, so please continue to maintain the freshness of your stock!
After visiting Choice Market, we strolled by Choice Greene and we were curious, so we too a look inside. And wow...what a cute little grocery place! We didnt buy anything, but it was still nice to look. They have many different kinds of cheeses, and cured meats, ie chorizo, bacon, etc! They also have a fish counter in the back, which also had alot of interesting choices. Definitely will have to come back and buy some ingredients to make a homemade meal :)
