Keeping my rating, but giving an update:
Went to Castro Theatre to catch the last inglorious Basterds...had dinner then went to Chocolate Bar for some drinking chocolate...
...only to find that it closed down. Owners are hoping to open a business in Amsterdam. Now where am I going to get drinking chocolate in the city?!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Mimi L.
New signage was up last week so 'Chocolates on Castro' is no more. A long bench, tables, and chairs were added. On a chilly Friday night the store had lots of customers. What caught my eye was the sign for Belgian waffles.
Hallo, gaufre! Hola gofre! Translation: hello to real belgian yeast waffles with crusty beaded sugar. The texture is so much different than the waffles we call Belgian at IHOP. They were my obsession in Spain and I've been stalking the Waffle Mania Truck man since he surfaced in the bay area. Here they are made twice daily in the morning and afternoon. Mine wasn't the freshest but it'll satisfy my cravings for sure. They're a little small but for $2 a good deal for a sweet snack. They can be chocolate covered too.
I didn't get a chance to try any chocolates. The majority of the chocolates look homemade and range from $1-2/piece. A little steep for me since I like to do my own chocolate creations at home and wouldn't pay money for a chocolate-dipped store-bought Palmier or stroopenwafel. But the small case at the end of the counter had the fancier looking chocolates and truffles.
I did have the $4 hot milk chocolate which was like drinking melted chocolate. Delicious unlike the powdery stuff they usually have at cafes. They still have the frozen chocolate dipped bananas. I'll be stopping in here a lot more now. -

I went here for the second time today while waiting for the 24 to arrive.
I bought a milk chocolate pecan turtle (chocolate/caramel thing) and it was very good but honestly, I did not think it was any better than See's candies. I know, that is a low blow, but it is my honest opinion. To top it off, it cost me $3.75 for one piece. It was probably half the size of my palm.
I must be missing something - maybe the belgian waffle is the big hit here. I will go back since I walk by all the time and give an update. -

If I could give them 6 stars I would. I had the best Iced Mocha ever at this place, and I can't wait to get back for another.
As a fan of dark chocolate my eyes lit up when I was asked if I wanted milk, dark or extra dark chocolate in my Mocha. Needless to say that's the first time that has ever happened to me, and let me tell you the mocha was just fantabulous. I also was fortunate enough to sample some of the chocolate treats at this establishment. Had I spent any more time in this place I would have left looking similar to Augustus Gloomp, chocolate smeared cheeks and all. -

After a looonnnngggg unsuccessful 2 hour journey in search of a crepe, we ended up back where we started on Castro & 18th. Barely able to walk, we told ourselves we'd just get our sugar fix from the next place that offered anythingggg sweet, which just so happened to be an adorable little chocolate shop called Chocolate Bar and Cafe.
We had dinner plans with some friends on the other side of town at 8 (yes, we have dessert before dinner on a regular basis), and it was coming up on 7:30 already so we needed something pretty quick and easy. Well, my 2 friends that i was with aren't huge fans of chocolate...at least not as much of a fan of it as i am, so they weren't too thrilled to be getting something here. Until they saw that they offered homemade raspberry peach frozen yogurt. And OH MANNNN was it good. I had a few bites and i immediately regretted not getting it myself. It was suuper creamy and had little fresh bits of peaches and raspberries in it. It was delicious.
I ended up getting an iced dark chocolate and it was quite good, but i gotta say i kinda wish i ended up getting the extra dark chocolate cuz i could have handled it being a little more on the bittersweet side. Oh well, next time. I love that they melt real chocolate into the milk and don't just use syrup or powder. So it really tastes like you're just drinking really rich, melted chocolate over ice. Mmmm.
It's quite heavy, and definitely not light on the calories, but in my opinion it's worth it. Just pace yourself and walk it off afterward. -

I stopped in because my friend and I just wanted some tea. Most places I've had hot chocolate at just watered down the chocolate till it tastes like chocolate flavored water... Not this place... (a nice surprise for me). I'm a dark chocolate lover so I had the dark hot chocolate. It's probably one of the best hot cocoas I've had in a long time esp. on the cold SF summer eve I was there.

I stopped in for a Mocha the first time and just kept going back. They don't use syrup, they melt the real deal. You can choose from white, milk or dark chocolate. All are made with two shots of espresso and your choice of milk, and whipped cream if you like. Honestly, if you are getting one go all the way full fat and whip. Just claim it as desert and treat yourself.

Wonderful hot chocolate...and the sisters who own the business and delightful. A delightful place in the neighborhood to sit, sip, and visit.
