Best gluten free dairy free Vegan Chocolate Beet cake Ever!!! My son has food sensitivities so it makes finding pastries and cakes he can eat a little tricky. When I found chive and saw the variety of gluten-free dairy free options, I was thrilled to see their chocolate cake on the menu so my son and everyone can eat the same dessert for special occasions. It was a crowd pleaser, and I will definitely be ordering my cake from them again.

we love an all vegan restaurant. i was glad to find something in the area with so many vegan options. and once i saw they had a vegan banana pudding I was in.
Unfortunately the food didn't hit as hard as I was expecting but it was still good. My mom ordered a salad which it looks like they pull from the premade section upfront. her carrots were moldy so we ended up splitting my dish. the girl working at the counter gave me a free dessert which was so kind of her.
i got the soul bowl. fried artichokes, mac n cheese, collards, sweet potato, and coleslaw. The fried artichokes were good and a cool concept. The collards desperately needed some seasoning/salt but the slaw was realllllly good. the banana pudding was good but the whip cream was little too salty.
at the end of the day I will always support an all vegan restaurant but I do not think chive would be my first choice in the future. I am open to trying other items though.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 13, 2023Updated review
It's a bummer when your favorites change. I was craving the sweet rice bowl (no picture this time) and hunny artichoke appetizer that I ordered two weeks ago. The sweet rice bowl - the rice was bland and the sweet potato portion was small. The hunny artichoke was a huge disappointment. They're normally quartered and have a nice crunch. The artichoke hearts were not quartered so when fried, the batter doesn't stay on and it's soggy. When I asked about it, I was told, "that's how they come now." Sure, but why can't they be quartered by staff?

When your food is ready, they'll bring it to your table. Water is self-service. Food comes out in take-out boxes. I ordered the sweet rice bowl (Sweet and Spicy Rice, Roasted and Fried Sweet Potato, Pickled Cabbage, Sesame Sweet Glaze, Sesame Seeds, Jalapeno Hummus, Cucumbers, Roasted Carrots, Scallions, Cilantro, Citrus Cream) and fried artichokes. Both were amazing! You gotta give it a try. It was very loud inside and it's hard to have a conversation.
Apr 6, 2022Previous reviewSo glad their dining room is back open! You order at the counter and seat yourself. When the food is ready, they bring it to you in carry out containers. We ordered the fried hunny artichokes, cubano, and fried artichoke bowl. The fried artichoke was perfectly cooked and the honey mustard was delicious (I took the rest home!). The cubano appeared very simple but it was full of flavor. The bowl was delicious and filling. Overall, it was a lot of food for two but my hollow leg was empty. Can't wait to go back!

Chive Kitchen was the first all-vegan restaurant I ever tried & even now, 7+ years & many other vegan restaurants later, it remains my favorite. I tried it when I myself was vegan, but even now as a non-vegan, I often find myself craving it. I first discovered Chive Kitchen at a VegMichigan event where Chive Kitchen's head chef & founder, Susie Silvestre, was doing a cooking demo of their chili.
Surprisingly, my favorite dish at Chive Kitchen to this day is their Michigan chili. I've personally always hated chili and was very hesitant to try Chive Kitchen's, but the moment I did, I was transformed. Their chili is one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted & ever since then, I've tried to try other place's chilis as well & they all fall SO short. I highly recommend you try a cup of this the next time you dine at Chive Kitchen. It's so scrumptious & I even brought it with me on several camping trips to heat over the campfire on colder events, which really hit the spot.
I don't understand how they do it, but the food is so incredible here! They take making food to a whole new level. I really want to encourage everyone, whether you are or aren't vegan, to leave any qualms & whatever prior (mis)conceptions you have about vegan food at the door, & try this place because you really shouldn't knock it until you've tried it.
Chive Kitchen is always doing special events as well & incorporating new & tasty dishes into their menu on a rolling basis. Every time I place an order here, I see new items on the menu that sound so good, I salivate just reading the description or seeing the pictures. Honestly, after writing this review, I'm craving Chive Kitchen again & will probably be placing an order online immediately after this. :)Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jeff M.Bloomington, IN2555Dec 9, 2022
Not vegan any more, extremely overpriced, and the food is mediocre at best. My girlfriend paid $11 for a measly portion of potato pancakes. My sweet rice bowl ($17.50) was okay, but there are SO many restaurants in this area with much better food--Seva, Aahar Indian, La Marsa (Middle Eastern), etc., whether you are vegan like I am or not.
Oh, also, unless there is some very good reason why you can't stay open past 7 pm, it's absurd for a restaurant to close this early. Lots of people can't even get to a restaurant before about 6.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0Business owner information

First of all, Chive at 33043 Grand River in Farmington is open as a vegan deli. Not sure where you get off saying that we are not serving vegan food there. Please let me know where you got this assumption from?
Over priced? Its called costing. We pay for over priced ingredients and formulate our mark ups. Inflation has been trying to snuff us all out. Prices are on the menu so you can always choose to not dine somewhere after looking at the prices.
Second I am sorry that you did not like the latkes and thought there were measly. Did you say anything to us? We would have rectified it for you.
The Sweet Rice Bowl is very popular. I am sorry it was just ok for you. Again let us know what could have been better. Constructive criticism is always ok.
And no those other restaurants are not better than us. We are all good, we all have our special offerings and we all have our struggles and our style. Maybe Chive is not for you and that is ok. Can't be all things to all people. We just had our seven year anniversary so I guess we are doing something ok.
And yes there is a very good reason that we close at 7pm. When you own your own business you can close whenever you want and I promise I will not care. We close at 7pm because I work 80 hours a week. My ankles at the end of the day literally cannot hold me up anymore. We prep from scratch. I don't want my team working over 45 hours so we make it where we have time to come in, prep, work service and close down the kitchen. To close our kitchen down properly and get ready for the next day it takes 1.5 hours.
I also wanted to create a business that my staff can go home at a decent time and be with their family. Including myself. What is good for me, is good for my staff.
We also stay alive by catering. After covid we converted more of our efforts to catering and event planning. So most of the time behind the scenes we are preparing for catering orders as well as organizing large scale events.
My greatest apologies that we cannot be around to satisfy what you think we should be doing. Here is to wishing you have perfection in the new year. May you be every single thing to every single person that has a multitude of expectations of you.
I don't expect everyone to like us. And if we mess up we try to fix it. Hands down we are not perfect. Integrity is huge for me. Since you seemed to have questions you can feel free to contact me directly at suzy@chivekitchen.com and I am always here so you can catch me in person since you missed me last time you were in. - 5795382644Dec 5, 2022
The food is delicious and the dining room and bar are really cute. It's not full service and food is served in carryout containers, but the staff is warm and welcoming, the drinks are fresh and cold, and the vegan faire is delicious! They also have a great selection of mocktails and wine. You just walk in and sit where you'd like and then order from the bar. They give you a table number and you pay up front when you leave. We had the pineapple fried rice and the fried artichoke bowl - both were so flavorful and delicious. I also had the minestrone soup, and that was hot and freshly made as well. Everything tasted great and I love the location - I will be back frequently, and especially when I am in the mood for a sandwich - they have a huge menu of those. Be aware - the menu is a little carb-heavy - I was thinking I might ask in advance if they could make cauliflower rice for me next time. I can't wait to return.

Love that they are open again. They have such a fun cocktail menu. I enjoy the tofu banh mi and seasonal cocktails . I am also a fan of the local beers and cannabis water you can get in the fridge . The staff is always friendly and the patio area is cute too. Great healthy option in downtown Farmington.

I haven't ate too many vegan sandwiches, nonetheless a vegan Rueben - but this was AMAZING. If I didn't live all the way in Texas I would come here at least once a week so I could try their whole menu.
The people were so friendly, which just adds to the great food. They had deserts and drinks as well!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mariko I.Plymouth, MI34129245Feb 1, 2022
A vegetarian/vegan's dream!! I'm so grateful that a good vegan restaurant is here in this area.
Pros:
Good prices
Good quality
Fast service (no-contact pickup)
The artichoke po-boy is delicious (and huge!). It reminds me of a Big Mac.
Cons:
The jalapeño burger was a tad bland for my taste, but still pretty good!!
I can't wait to come back and try more of the items!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - CJ S.Detroit, MI09Jun 7, 2023
