came here with the boyfriend's family... the garlic rolls are steamy and delicious and absolutely decadent. they taste so bad for you, probably are, but are just SO GOOD FOR YOUR SOUL. taking garlic bread to a whole new level.

had the crab artichoke fondue as a starter.. and it was so delicious. i love gooey cheese.. and this was great.. not too overwhelming.. the toasts it came with were crunchy and super tasty on their own.

me + boyfriend's brother both got the kona crabs. he got it spicy chili style and i got it ginger/scallion style. his was just steamed with chili sauce on the side, but mine?! ASIAN STYLE AND SOOO PERFECTION. i was sharing it with everyone and everyone was a fan. DELISH!!!

sidenote: boyfriend's awesome dad got steak envy and actually got a piece from a neighboring customer and we all had a bite. delish! boyfriend got steak envy too.

which comes to the bad part of the night. boyfriend was NOT happy with his scallops. he got sauteed scallops but they were BREADED!!!! :[ who BREADS scallops?!?! breaded scallops in general should be an offense.. but at least fried is understandable.. but sauteed?!?!?! :[ sigh... scallop fail. but from what he says the scallops were cooked right on the inside.. just flavorless due to the breading... it didn't look too appealing to me tho, too much sauce...

the cheesecake at the end of the night was really good :]

I have to admit, I do not usually like fish but I have never had a problem here and we've been coming here for years.

I would have given it 5 stars except on more than one occasion we have had a waitress who will not let you order unless you order in a specific order, HER WAY. Even if you try to state exactly what you want, unless it was in the order she wanted, you had to start over. No problems with any other wait staff.

I enjoy it even more now that it is all non-smoking.

Just like Bob Chinn's but on a smaller scale.

How they're alike:
Mai Tai's, garlic rolls, and casual atmosphere.

Different:
The garlic rolls were the same in taste but different in shape.
They don't serve Hawaiian (strawberry) lemonade
They don't serve guava juice as well.
Waiters are not wearing colorful shirts and didn't see anyone waitstaff wearing shorts.
Smaller selection on the menu but still big portions.
Crab legs came out whole not cut into pieces already.
No special Bob sauce.
If you ordered crab legs you were provided a bib, the metal crackers and a plastic one as well.
They have a Monday night 16 oz crab leg special for $19.99 which I believe Chinns in Wheeling doesn't have anymore.

I wish they served the strawberry lemonade, but I guess I'll be trekking out to wheeling more.

Everything was great.  My server was very descript about the menu.  And those garlic rolls were amazing. The fish was very fresh and flavorful.  I had it served blackend. I don't remember his name but he was a bald , Hispanic man.  But I will be back to have him wait on me again.

All the stars are for the fish, which is, without a doubt, as fresh as I have ever experienced in the Midwest. I'm not as much a fan of the garlic bread as everyone else. It's just some plain rolls dipped in garlicky oil, so if you want flavor, you'll definitely get oil all over you. Otherwise, if you're trying not to make a gigantic mess in front of your mom's suburbanite friends, then you have a pretty tasteless plain roll. My mom said the MaiTai was just ok. I was the DD so I didn't try it. The calamari was delicious and had a good kick to it. The fried shrimp was just ok. Maybe it was what I ordered or maybe I was put off by the service/ambiance/kids running around. I am definitely no fan of the 'burbs, so I highly doubt I'll be driving all the way out here just for dinner. If you're in the area, though, would be worth it to have some fish, fresh off the plane.

Mai Tai's to DIE for! Seriously, don't order a pitcher unless you brought a DD to take you home.

My BF and went here when I was craving an end of the work week Mai Tai pitcher one spring evening. We were both really hungry after work so we went ASAP- early bird special style with dinner at 5:30.

The service was okay but nothing special. I think because it was early and we were young that the server felt it was in her best interest to deal with the elderly patrons over the whippersnappers. Nevertheless, We were fine with the so-so service since we'd already gotten our Mai Tai pitcher and were well on our way to intoxication central.

For food, I got a pasta dish and so did my BF. My dish wasn't memorable, as I'm a vegetarian, but it wasn't bad either. My Bf got a lobster & crab au gratin that was phenomenal! He loved it, though it did look a bit oily. I tried some of the potatoes and they were melt in your mouth delicious. And though everything was good, the prices were a little high for what it was... and what it was, was no Bob Chinn's in Wheeling, unfortunately.

The atmosphere is seriously lacking and again, just so-so service.

Oh, shoot! I almost forgot about the Mai Tai's- deadly! I wore heels and I had to tightly hold on to my boyfriend's arm to get out without stumbling. To say I was slap happy would be vast understatement. Thank God my BF has a high tolerance. We got home and passed out within 10 minutes still in our clothes, me with my fake eyelashes still stuck on.

So, though we weren't even able to stay awake until 8:30 that night, we'd had a good time and as an extra bonus, woke up the next morning already dressed and ready to go out again.

Went there on a saturday night with my husband. Was seated right next to the stand when you first walk in the place. Food was good, and the service was good. But there were these two young girls I guess they were the hostesses. They ruined our dining experience my husband and I could over hear thier conversation. I want to tell you it was disgusting and uncalled for I really can't go into detail but it was bad. I will never return to this establishment due to these two disgusting foul mouthed girls.

I ate here for the first time this weekend and loved it. The garlic rolls are yummy! I was interested in the Ahi Tuna and the waiter explained all the ways it can be fixed. He offered great explanations which allowed me to make a great choice. My non-seafood loving husband had a steak and pasta. The steak was not steak house quality, but it was still good, cooked perfectly. The pasta sauce was very good. I am looking forward to going back.

My family and I have been to Chinn's a number of times since my last post; last night made for at least the 8th visit. My mother got her traditional mussels with alfredo sauce (a dish I often order as well), BUT she told me on the phone this morning that they made her sick late last night. NO! Where will be our go-to for mussels now? I'm reluctant to order them again from a place that caused illness, even though they were fine on other occasions. (She had not eaten anything else all day, she said.) The search begins...

On the more positive side, my father greatly enjoyed his chargrilled halibut (he said so a dozen times during the meal). I was feeling crabby (ha) and ended up with the "Ex-CRAB-aganza" (normally snow crab is my thing, but they did not have it on the ever-changing menu that day), so this was a mix of Louisiana blue crab claws (lots of tiny, meaty fingers), several dungeness crab legs (least amount of meat for the most work) and some chunks of king crab legs (sweet meat, but studded with prickly remnants of spines on the carapace that made it hard to deal with the shells). All tasty, but overall, I still prefer snow crab.

Our waiter, Steve, was professional and quick with refills and shell bowl evacuations.

I'm sure we'll be back to Chinn's, but we'll probably have to find our mussels elsewhere in the future.

The restaurant is not very impressive the prices do not match up with the value of the experience and the food.

The food was good and the service was very good as well.  Better than red lobster and the fish was fresh.  I would probably not want to go back anytime soon however It was a decent dinner.

My dinning companion ordered a fish and got ill for a couple of days.  I would not come here again not a very nice eating environment either.

Delicious seafood in the suburbs!
HUGE crab legs were full of flavor.  We do not like the buttery sauce so we asked for some lemon juice and soy sauce.  Thanks to the kind server, we were able to enjoy in our way :)
I forgot the name of fish, but the grilled Hawaiian fish was so wonderful...

The seafood gets delivered in the same way (the same plane) as Bob Chinn.  They are not affilated but the owner is the same or something (according to the restaurant staff).  No wonder what they do is so similar.

I actually like this place better.  Bob Chinn in Wheeling is way too crowded and too loud.  Plus, Naperville is close and we can shop and have drinks @ bars afterward.

Bob Chinn should really talk to whichever family member is running this place because it was just a terrible experience.   My group of ten were seated right away, drink orders taken and brought quickly.  It was all downhill from there.  Our server came around after ten minutes and asked if we were ready to order.  I said "Yes, I think so..." to which he replied. "OK, I'll come back later."  Whaaa???  After another 15 minutes we had to flag him down and he finally took our order.  I ordered the soft shell crab dinner, which consisted of 4 soft shell crab prepared either sauteed or tempura fried.  I asked for two of both styles.  The fried portion of my meal was fine.  If it was salted right after coming out of the fryer, it would've been really good.  It was okay.  The sauteed crabs were drowned in butter.  Apparently, I ordered butter in the shape of crabs because butter is all I tasted.  I didn't finish those.
Two others ordered the surf n' turf which came with a filet and crab.  The crab came out first, one leg on a plate by itself.  It was room temperature and extremely salty according the two people who ordered it.  Crab that is salty like that is a sure sign that it isn't of the highest quality.  This place was charging us a premium for the crab and my friends absolutely did not get what they paid for.  The filet came 5 minutes later on a large platter.  Why the crab couldn't come out on the platter at the same time is beyond me.  The filet was so ridiculously small I wanted to laugh...but I didn't because my friends were not amused.  The surf n' turf here has got to be one of the worst values I've ever seen.  I've had the surf n' turf at Bob Chinn's in Wheeling and I have definitely gotten more crab and steak for a similar price.  There were other mix ups with our orders that shouldn't have happened but I think I've made my point.  Chinn's 34th St. Fishery is riding on the reputation of Bob Chinn's in Wheeling but not putting forth the same effort.  Not even close.  I can't recommend this place at all after my groups experience.

I had the best tuna steak of my life here (super, super rare -- the stuff of my pescatarian fantasies).  Love those garlic rolls too. Yum.

Warning: not a date spot.  There's not much ambiance, it's on a weird strip of Ogden surrounded by car dealerships and everything you wear will stink like fish when you leave. But if all you're interested in is fresh, delicious seafood then have at it.

My entire family are crab leg fanatics! I have traveled many a miles and last year found the diamond in the rough for crab legs.

Chinn's has the VERY BEST CRAB LEGS I have every had for a few reasons;
- They are almost the size of my ARM!
- The taste is superb. I do not even need butter.
- The price! Who can beat their Crab Crackin' Monday special???

I do not know what people on here are taking about when it comes to the service. We celebrated my mother-in-laws birthday last night, 8 people and a baby, the service was FANTASTIC! Had our crab legs just as we were finishing our salads. For those that have had poor service; next time you go - ask for Rich, he rocks! (Was good with our baby and had such a good sense of humor he actually made us laugh several times over. More importantly was on top of EVERYTHING!)

I don't know if people just never eat out much around here or what, but in my opinion, when it comes to Chinn's you get the most for your money!!! It's hard for me to go anywhere else, I know I would pay twice the amount and get less.

I am so excited to be back in the Chicago area the first weekend of December 08. This restaurant is one of my two favorite Naperville-area seafood restaurants to visit. I've just read over the full first page of reviews and am pleased to see that they are mainly good. The only people who complain are those who are sensitive to shellfish. Lucky me, none of my people are!

I'm fully anticipating the bisque, those garlic rolls and a Mai Tai! Yum, this place rocks! I'm not giving it five stars only because the ambiance is a lacking a bit; and in the past the service has been a few hairs short of perfection.

Don't let the name fool ya - it's not anywhere close to the Bob Chinn's everyone knows and loves.  I would not suggest going here!

For a seafood restaurant, they should be well aware that many people in this world have food allergies - particularly to shellfish.  My friend, with a shellfish allergy, ordered pork chops.  Surprisingly, she was getting an allergic reaction to her meal!

We told the server, and she had ZERO sympathy and seemed to put the blame on her for not disclosing her SHELLFISH allergy when she ordered a MEAT dish!  Not only was the server unsympathetic and uncaring, but the manager seemed uncaring also!

And get this...they admitted that THEY DO NOT CLEAN THEIR POTS/PANS/GRILLS ONCE until the end of the night!  Talk about disgusting.

So...I would never eat here.  They could clearly care less if you die in their restaurant from eating their food.

In Summary...
Food:  Mediocre
Ambiance:  Crappy
Service:  Slow (took 20 mins to get the check, another 15 mins for them to process the check)...busy for a Friday night but still...
Employees:  disgruntled maybe?  unhappy?  who knows...
Cleanliness:  what?  they have to clean stuff?

Overall experience:  sad and disturbing  :(

My rating would have been much better if they had been even slightly sympathetic to the allergic reaction that was happening at our table (which sent my friend to the ER at the hospital, by the way), and also if they cleaned in their kitchen.

No more Chinn's 34th in my life again! I got extremely sick after the dinner, copy cat of Bob chinn, but the quality wasn't that high compare with it, last time I had my dinner with my boyfriend, I ordered some fish from their today's special, taste wasn't that bad just too oily, after the dinner I got diarrhea that night, sick for two days! I bet its from the fish, they got one star because their service was outstanding, but I would never go back again!

The food here is 5 stars.  The pricing and atmosphere are 3.  But, what do you expect for FRESH fish daily in a place that is 1,200 miles from the closest salt water.

The 3-star atmosphere is crowded and noisy, with paper sheets over white tablecloths.  You get cafeteria silverware and a stack of paper towels for napkins.  No fine linen here.  Don't let that stop you.  They make up for it with food quality and quantity.

The service is excellent.  Sometimes it is flamboyant and maybe a touch sarcastic, but always good and fun.  The wait staff is professional.

When you walk into the restaurant you will see the updated bills of lading for the fish that was freshly flown in from across the USA.

Garlic rolls.  Decadent.  The only rule is that your spouse has to eat them too... or you are sleeping on the couch.

The menu is printed daily.  The shashimi tuna is first rate.  Grouper is moist, flakey and flavorful.  My wife loves the shrimp.  I normally try the specials because they may have some unique fish that day.  Ask your waiter and trust them.   If you want something special that isn't on the menu, just ask.

Sides:  I love the spinach and Asian white rice.

I grew up on the East coast.  Fresh seafood was the norm.  This is the only place that comes close to getting that freshness and quality in the Naperville area.  (I would chose it over Catch 35)

I have eaten here at least a dozen times and it is truly one of my favorite restaurants.  (This is the place that taught my midwest wife to love seafood.)

Rumor has it that the guy who owns this place is the nephew of Bob Chinn (Bob Chinn's Crab House), ergo the Mai Tais.

I've dined here a few times and found the food to have the same qualities as Bob Chinn's in Wheeling, Ill., but slightly less pricey... And that works for me! Plus it's a much shorter drive. On a recent Saturday night visit, the restaurant floor was packed with eager diners so my mother-in-law and I ordered a couple of drinks (a glass of riesling and a very strong glass of the signature mai tai) and sat near the bar until our table was ready. The hostess gave us a lobster-shaped pager that lights up to notify you that your table is ready.

When seated, we were greeted by our server who was very friendly and courteous. We started off with cups of creamy homemade soups (lobster bisque and Boston clam chowders) and the famous garlic rolls. The portions are so generous that we could have shared a single cup of soup. Then we ordered our entrees... jumbo shell-on shrimp, insalata caprese and oriental-style Hawaiian ahi tuna. The insalata never made it to the table for some reason but we had plenty to eat. When we let our server know that we would like to cancel the salad, he was very apologetic. Moments later, a food runner tried to bring it over as a comped dish, but we had refused it at that point.

Overall, the food and service is good.

If you'd like a side order of an emergency room visit with your pork chops, try Stanley Chinn's on scenic Ogden avenue.  Although shellfish allergies are common and dangerous, that doesn't hold back the cooks at Stanley's (not to be confused with Bob's, but if you happen to think it's Bob's they'll still take your money).  Oh no, they mix everything thing together and as my wife Lisa D. explained, and the results are heart racing.

Other than the danger factor, the knockoff Chinn's is great if you love rude service and below-average seafood at above-average prices.  But it's the little added touches that really made me realize that they don't go the extra mile for you at Stanley's, like the yellow gunk on my Chinn's beer glass.

So head on down to Chinn's and grab yourself some fishery and some Kimberly Clark paper towels!  They'll roll out a fresh paper tablecloth for ya and make you feel like you're almost wanted, until you go into anaphylactic shock, then they really turn off the charm.

One of my favorite restaurants in the Western Burbs -- not fancy, but consistent.  It is a VERY casual place right out of the 1980's.  The seafood is flown in fresh daily.

The shell fish and semi-exotic fish are really wonderful.  The salt-and-pepper calimari and the rolls (melted in garlic and butter) are also very good.

If you want to loud, casual place this is the spot.  It is kid friendly and has terrific Mai Tai's.

Obviously there are not many places to get fresh seafood in the Chicago suburbs but this place somehow manages.

There's this weird non-association pact with Bob Chinn's Crabshack in Wheeling even though the 34 St restaurant has a similar menu but condensed Crabshack version.

What can really rock your boat though is a pitcher of Bob Chinn's Mai Tai's and some lobster or King Crab. They can cook the lobster either steamed or broiled. Broiled being best. The addition of the fresh baked dinner rolls covered in melted butter is a messy sin but are you expecting to keep clean while shelling your lobster ?

The food here is really really good. However, I hate eating at this place. The first time the waitress pretty much ignored us and the next few waiters/waitresses we've had there weren't much fun either.

So we usually just carry out an order. I usually get the mixed seafood one.. uh, the exact name escapes me. But the scallops, shrimp, breaded fish, etc. are all very good. My mom says its fresh but I have no judgment on that cause I don't really know.

--EDIT--
Okay so my parents took me to the Bob Chinn's fishery that's up north and I changed my mind about this place. The food THERE is phenomal, and here..slightly less so. So minus 1 star haha

Awesome Mai tais!  Did you know you can buy them in massive quantities to go?  Yummy!

The food is great here!  My kids like the stone crab claws and I have loved anything I've eaten here.  I have NOT had any landlubber food.  Come on, it's a seafood place, get the seafood!

This place can get packed on the weekend, but if you go early it's easy to get a table.  They have a lobster tank when you walk in the door which is great amusement for kids.  The bar is pretty small, but it is a bar - somewhere to sit and peruse the menu.

More on the Mai tais - we found a boxed Mai tai mix at Binny's Liquor Store that was made in Wheeling and it tastes just like these!

It's really a 3.5 star for me but hopefully when I come back next time, I can bump it up a star.

The fish is top notch, so food over all is a solid 4 star.  I had the Hawaiian Walu which is like a seabass and I had it chargrilled and it was absolutely hands down yummy.  The rolls are good too, six hours later, garlic still lingering in my mouth.  I also had the spicy seafood gumbo.  It was not like other gumbos I've had, but it was good.

The service was alright.  While my guy was nice, but I expected a little prompter service since I was on my 1 hour lunch break and that I was your only table in the restaurant.

Overall, this place focuses on food, as the atmosphere is just more about having fun and enjoying your company and the food as opposed to fine linen.  I am looking forward to my next visit and hopefully I can add another star!

OK, the fish was great. But did it have to be that pricy? I mean for a casual diner atmosphere (with a hole in my seat) and cheap paper towels, the cost of my meal was equivalent to what I would pay at Shaw's. It must be really hard to get good fish in Naperville.
Still, the place was PACKED on a Wednesday night.
And a lil' advice, don't waste time on the crab, it wasn't worth the money.
And the signature Mai Tai? Waaaay to sweet- like fruit punch. Save your $ for a glass of wine instead.

The only reason I am giving this place 1 star is because there is no option to give zero stars. Or negative stars, for that matter.

We went as part of a party of 8 to celebrate a friend's birthday. Out of our group, three of us had sensitivity to shellfish, so we each ordered something outside the category: one guy got a steak, one girl ordered the ahi tuna, and I had the pork chops. You'd think I'd be safe, right? WRONG.

After I had finished my pork chops, I noticed that my bottom lip had started to swell up (this started to happen when I'd eat shrimp, so I stopped about 2 years ago). My husband went to find the waitress and manager, and they were very shady. In the space of about three minutes, the manager told him that "he didn't know how that could have happened," and then confessed that it "might" have happened because everything gets cooked on the same grill, and the waitress then admitted that the grill doesn't get cleaned until the end of the night. (I'm not an OSHA expert, but that sounds like some kind of cross-contamination violation to me.) Then they both started becoming very defensive, claiming that I should have told them about my allergy in the first place so it could have been avoided. I suppose this is true--however, instead of showing any sign of concern or apology, they basically just acted like it was all my fault and I was an idiot. And I ordered the frigging PORK CHOPS, not the lobster and shrimp medley--I didn't think I had to worry about the sanitation in the kitchen.

A few minutes later I went into anaphylactic shock--my throat was closing up, I was shaking uncontrollably and my hands and feet quickly went numb. This had NEVER happened to me before. I had to be rushed to the emergency room of Edwards Hospital, where I had to be treated with an IV cocktail of steroids, Benadryl, Adavan and an anti-nausea drug. And now I have to carry around an epipen for the rest of my life, just in case.

Obviously my shellfish sensitivity had turned into a full-blown allergy without me knowing it, and I was doomed to have this type of reaction someday. But it never should have happened after eating pork of all things. I've eaten at plenty of restaurants that serve seafood (heck, don't almost all restaurants serve at least one kind of seafood?) and I have never had anything even remotely like this happen. Moreover, the utter lack of concern and defensive attitude on the part of Chinn's 34th just makes me shudder in disgust.

Other complaints: overpriced for the general quality of food, the Mai Tais were overly sweet, and the service was extremely slow. And my friend who ordered the Ahi Tuna? Her lower lip started to swell up as well, but luckily she had a Zyrtec-D on her and was ok.

I'm a big fan of Chinn's on Ogden Avenue. Whenever I get that taste for fried something- I love coming here and ordering the fried jumbo shrimp- they are so good.  Not the healthiest option but if you don't care about that or feel like splurging even more- get the coconut fried shrimp- delicious!  Service is great, and my only complaint is that there is too much garlic on their garlic rolls- you smell for days, so I always ask for plain rolls and they are very accomodating!

Being a big seafood lover, I have to say that this place is better than the original Chinn's restaurant ( still a great restaurant, too).  I think the price is pretty reasonable given that it is daily fresh seafood place.  My favorite is the Bluepoint oysters, Yummmm...  The best part is the casual dining experience.  When you're eating with your hands, with melted butter falling off your fingers, it's nice to have one of your old t-shirt and jeans for the occasion.  If you're ever in the area, it is highly recommended to check out.

My favorite thing about this place is you can get the freshest seafood ever and still be in a casual environment.  The bill for my friend and I was around $100.  And I didn't have to dress up-I went in a track suit!  Other people were wearing t-shirts and jeans...It is very laid back and comfortable.  A great place to sit back, relax, and enjoy a great meal.  The wait staff is very friendly and knowledgeable.  I had the jumbo stuffed fried shrimp and it was out of this world.  The steamy garlic rolls are great, too.  Amazing desserts...

Everybody loves this place! The pre-dinner rolls with garlic sauce is great and the menu is varied - but the common element being seafood. Our out-of-town customers love this place and return frequently. Anyway, I've tried about 6+ different items on the menu and they are all fantastic. However I have a favorite now and am stuck on it - so I'd recommend the Singapore noodles.

The meal was of great quality. The price is through the roof! I can get the same quality at less than HALF the price. Plus the staff was poor. They can bite my California Roll! :(

Had a nice meal at Chinn's with excellent service by Nate.   Food was good and plentiful but not great per se'.    And the atmosphere is casual.  Items on the menu were a bit pricey but the quantity was large.   The crab legs were huge.   Good eats but nothing terribly special about the place.

YUM, the crab here is amazing.  The atmosphere has been reviewed enough, so I'll just say my husband thinks the raucous atmosphere later in the evening is due to the Mai Tais.  The service the last time I was there was some of the best I've ever had.  (Rich was the server's name) and the food is always so good.  If you look in the tribune on Friday maybe, (not sure about the day) you can find a coupon for 16 oz. crab for $19.99 on Monday night, and you have to bring the ad in.  The Mai Tai was also noteworthy, have two and make it a party.
