Review from Shannon P.
Portland, OR
I love this place, I've been coming here for years. The food is consistently average, sometimes ok...sometimes good, and yesterday actually pretty good. But it's great for the relaxed atmosphere and what it is, which is a neighborhood Chinese food restaurant serving unpretentious food good for all types of people, including families. The waitstaff are almost always friendly and prompt and the eating area is large enough so you won't feel crowded or trip over people even if the place is full.

We ordered take-out on the recommendation of a neighbor. Never again!
The staff was definitely friendly but the food was definitely the worst Chinese food I have ever had.
We ordered Kung Pao Tofu and some Egg Foo Yung. The Egg Foo Yung was decent--though it smelled an awful lot like greasy french fries--but the Kung Pao was horrible. It says it is supposed to be spicy, but it wasn't in the least. The tofu was shriveled and dry. Gross. Dry, crusty white rice was served with it, as was some kind of mystery peanut gravy that I guess was supposed to go on the dish. It didn't help, either way. There was little flavor at all to this dish besides grease. I can't say enough what a waste of money this was.
Maybe if you are wasted, this place is ok (I had only casually drank 2 beers prior to eating). Maybe if there is someone else in the kitchen cooking...??? I don't know that I would give this place a second try, unless I had a money-back guarantee! -

Drink, Drank and Drunk. Every time I am here I am drunk.

Well I guess I have to be drunk to enjoy this sad food. The
General Taos Chix and Mongolian Beef were terrible and bland. I've had spicier mild food. The pork fried rice was lacking but the service was friendly. -

Every morning after visiting the Chinese Village, I wake up in a panic - usually wondering aloud to my hubs if we even ate that delicious food we'd ordered at the bar, that I had been looking so forward to. The response is always, "yes, you ate the hell out of it and then passed out on the couch." A trip down the stairs confirms the story. 2 plates on the table with chopsticks and a fortune or two laying around. This is a testament to two things: 1. they poor a stiff drink - you definitely get your money's worth. 2. the food is good; it's not gonna change your life, but it's definitely tasty, reasonably priced chinese food to soak up some of the would-be hangover. We probably eat it way too often - I just wish I could remember.

My fave place to be eating Chinese food. They have great karaoke and they have awesome bartender too!

Review from Leah H.
It is finally time to knock out this review. Hinfsl Villag (or so reads the deteriorating carved wooden arch in the bar). This is somewhat difficult for me to review. I suppose the best way is to list it. Here it is!
What Hinfsl does right:
-STRONG cheap drinks. $2 wells on lady's night and gentleman's night (I know what your thinking - "there are gentlemen at the Chinese Village?")
-Awesome bartenders. It doesn't matter what night, they are all great.
-Karaoke three nights a week. I don't really see why anyone wants to go there when karaoke isn't going on. The KJ, Nick, is one of the best!
-The patrons. No, they don't really do this right. But if all else fails in the night, people-watching always holds some degree entertainment.
The things that make me want to never go back:
-The patrons. I'm not gonna lie, I'm just waiting for the night a knife-fight is going to break out. The drunks get TOO drunk and the hookers and John's flock to the video lottery. The whole scene there is rather questionable.
-The food. Sure, I've never let the food here reach my mouth. But that is because I have standards.
-The....looking for the right word...err...sleaze? factor. I don't know how else to put it. I just feel kind of dirty after spending a night drinking there.
Meh. I'll go back again I'm sure. And then I will feel dirty again after leaving. And so the Hinfsl experience goes. -

They totally remodeled the bar since I was last here (um...it's been awhile). They did a pretty nice job and it really improved the old ashtray smell that was built up from the time they opened a million years ago until the smking ban. They are making better drinks and the service has always been good. And I think the food quality has also improved a little.
I've come to the realization that I will probably always come here for basic Cantonese-style Chinese food. I've tried to move on and try other restaurants but Chinese Village has the best damn sweet and sour chicken on the planet! I cannot give it up! My hubby also thinks that their fried shrimp is really good. So every 6 mths or so we will probably be sneaking in to chow down on fried goodies.
I'd like to give the place 3.5 stars, but I rounded up because of their friggin' sweet and sour chicken.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Portland, OR
Okay, I've finally taken the plunge and eaten the food here in the dining room. I'm pretty sorry. We had the pot stickers which are really good and I've previously had those as well as the egg rolls. No complaints there.
It all comes down to the sauce that was on the food we ordered. Kung Pao Chicken and Mu Shu Pork. The sauce in both cases was super sweet. Kung Pao usually has some kick to it in the heat department and it was completely lacking. No peanuts in the dish either. They were nice enough to substitute out the celery for broccoli though. The veggies were all super fresh and crispy. It was that stupid sauce coating everything, and it was pretty thick sauce as well.
The Mu Shu has plum sauce which is always sweet, so that was okay. It was the sauce on the mixture which made it completely unrecognizable that it was Mu Shu. In fact, come to think of it, I've never had Mu Shu with a sauce on it. Everything was so finely chopped up into cubes and placed on a bed of cabbage too. It was very weird. I'm used to it being all shredded and larger pieces well mixed up. The pancakes were super thin, more like rice paper so they fell apart the second the filling was put inside. It was pretty frustrating to eat. We both had one pancake each and abandoned it all.
We packed up the Kung Pao as leftovers and left the Mu shu there. Then when the bill came, the waitress took half of my fortune cookie with her! It was super crisp and fresh too, so I was totally bummed out. The entire meal felt super rushed, we weren't in any hurry since we had an hour to kill before karaoke started in the lounge. She kept asking if we were done. There wasn't a lack of seating in the room, half the place was empty. Her tip was dwindling with every time she asked.
I've learned my lesson, I should have stuck with my first instinct about the food here. It looked and smelled greasy so I should have known not to try the main dining room. Oh well. Now I know, and you do too!
I'll always sing karaoke in the lounge, that'll never change. Those are good times happening there!2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Review from Don B.
The bar is currently under construction so... well... this is a review of the bar that's currently operating out of the banquet room.
Chinese Village is one of those classic dingy Chinese/American places that lines 82nd Avenue (aka The Avenue of Roses). The sign is a classic neon which has seen better days. From the outside, the place is a bit run down, and in this case, a pretty good barometer of what you're going to find inside.
Driving down 82nd on a Sunday evening, we decided to pop in and check this place out on a lark. I've always wondered about it... the parking lot seems busy on your average Friday/Saturday nights. Unfortunately (or possibly fortunately, based on reading some of the other reviews on here), the bar was closed for renovation, but a helpful temporary sign directed us to a bar operating in one of the large banquet rooms in the restaurant.
The restaurant itself is fairly small, with some booths and tables and your classic heavy Chinese decor. There is a medium sized banquet room to one side, and a large one in the back that currently plays host to a temporary Chinese dive.
The clientele is what you'd expect for a place like this on 82nd. Classy. The little Chinese bartender lady was nice, offering up some special "no-so Jell-o" shots in honor of the Super Bowl. Not-so Jell-o? They put too much alcohol in so it didn't set. $1 for a semi-liquid yet still viscous shot that pretty much tasted like cough syrup. Oh yeah. Time to party.
We each grabbed one of these nasty/snotty-textured cups and a Tsingtao and proceeded to play some Megatouch while one of the patrons played an assortment of country, metal, grunge, and... Paul Simon(?!) on the juke. A quick scan of the room indicated that they'd had a little superbowl party there only hours earlier, with the remnants of a classic dive bar buffet on a table in the corner consisting of some empty bags of ruffles and a crock pot with some cooked hot dogs in it... at a Chinese restaurant/bar. Awesome.
So we downed our not-so Jello-o shots, drank some Tsingtao, and played some boobie photo-hunt on the Megatouch and communed with 82nd Ave. It was magical.
No food was consumed so I can't comment on that, but I can say I'll definitely be back to check out the new and improved and remodeled bar when it reopens. This could make for some good, cheap, adventurous drinkin'. -

This is the undisputed king of the Americanized Chinese food place plus seedy Chinese bar in Portland. (Only since Hung Far Low moved).
But if its late night and you want a drink and Chinese food this is the place.
The BBQ pork is well prepared if a bit tough. The Americanized egg rolls are oversized and stuffed with all the wrong things wrapped in a thick wrapper. But the best egg foo yung slathered in brown gravy lives here.Listed in: Best Americanized Chinese food

I didn't eat here, just drank here. They have Slayer on the jukebox! slayer! This place is a hidden gem. Well maybe not hidden but I don't live here so hidden to me I guess. I hear the food is good too. Cheap drinks, great jukebox with lots of metal on it. I have no idea who put all the metal on the jukebox but that rules!!

When I first moved to Portland, I was given the advice "don't ever go to 82nd ave. if someone asks you to go to 82nd or higher, you always answer no"
I wish that I listened to my friends more often.
I was with a large group last night and we sat in the lounge section of the restaurant rather than the restaurant section of the restaurant. The big difference between the two was that the lounge was dark, loud and had a distinct musty basement smell.
We scoped out a large round table and two small rectangle tables in the middle of the room. My least favorite feeling in the world is being sticky and that round table made me sticky. Before our food even came out. I knew that nothing good could come out of this night.
Carly and I split the kung poa tofu, meatless chow mein and spring rolls. The spring rolls were fine (it's hard to mess up deep fried, right?) but the other two dishes were just awful. As a girl who loves bad Chinese food and can recognize bad Chinese food, I was shocked at how awful it was. Carly was spot on when she said "it tastes like they cooked everything in water instead of grease. I miss the MSG".
I don't think that anyone was too happy with their food considering how much food was on the table when everyone was done.
The two things that redeemed the place and earned the two stars were:
1) the waitress--she was adorable, patient, and called me by my first name (she had my card) as if we were old friend.
2) the clientele--we were on 82nd ave and were treated to booty dancing at 8:30 at night by a "is she/isn't she a prostitute" grinding on a 40ish year old man and a man who could be her grandpa.
Thanks Avenue of Roses for existing and just being you -

I was on a Tiki tour tonight, I walked out of this bar. It was the smelliest place I have been to. It was Tiki twenty years ago, now it's just "iki". I will never return.

Wow, I've been hearing a lot about how good this place was so I was really excited to give it a shot. Bummer, I was completely disappointed with the food. I got three different styles of dishes so I could get some variety and try the different styles and not a one of them was flavorful, everything was really bland. Definitely won't be going back and might have to think twice about taking suggestions from a few of my friends who recommended this place.

After adjusting to the severe stink of cig smoke, this place will then freeze you out. The food, while in huge quantities, is nasty. They fry EVERYTHING! As you break the crust of your overly fried egg roll, you can savor in the yelling and screaming of all the meth heads trashy kids that seem to enjoy this place. Never again, never, never, never.

Truly terrible chinese take out. I have to say that I am a vegetarian so perhaps the meat choices are better. Uneatable.
