I consistently have solid food quality when I come here. I have been there for their lunch dim sum, and also dinner with larger dishes. All of the items I had there were pretty decent, you can tell this place has been around for a while so they are able to get all the dishes right.
I remember going there one time and ordered the Beef noodle soup, I complained that my noodle had no beef in it when it arrived. The waiter went back, and brought out a plate of beef shortly after and dumped it into my noodle soup. I thought that was pretty funny for some reason, it was not funny for the rest of the folks at my desk. I guess they were trying to make up for my complaint, but the method they went about doing it was less than ideal. Nonetheless, I would continue to go back because the food is consistently good.
Food = good. Selection/variety=left wanting more.
Service = Mandarin preferred. Everything else is a struggle. For both patron and restaurateur. (And from what I've heard...Taiwanese-owned, so some of the food choices lean that way too....like ice-cold dishes of veggies and pickled items on the dim sum cart...)
Dim sum prices = moderate.
Decor = screaming 1980's especially with the speaker in the ceiling that's about to fall... trust me.
Oh yeah... they charge gratuity automatically with parties of 4+. WTH...
I am going to say that if I dislike someone, and wanted them to suffer during a meal, this would be the place to do it, and I would not have to do the dishes later either.
Overall, China Stix is one of the best Chinese restaurants in Santa Clara. The prices are reasonable, the food is very good and the staff does what would expect from a family run mid range place.
I prefer going there for lunch or doing take out over doing dinner.
This is on my list of great Chinese places to get lunch. Lunch is reasonbly priced and the portions are mammoth. Really, you get your entree, noodles, rice, salad, and either an eggroll or a piece of fried chicken.
Dim sum here is solid. They have a pretty good spread and it's all the appropriate temperature.
The dining room is bright and clean and the staff Is friendly. Combined with good-tasting food, these qualities have made me a repeat customer.
We come here for lunch on occasion and the food is always pretty good. It's not my favorite Chinese place, but they do a good job. During lunch they have both lunch specials and Shaomai, which are normally very good. What I like about it the most is that you can get in, have a good meal, and get back to work in an hour; depending on where you work. Don't expect 5-star eating, because this isn't what this place is all about.
About the Shaomai, the selection isn't huge, but it's good. They can be a little slow to bringing it around at times, so don't be afraid to flag staff down and ask for it, once they know you are going to have it, they tend to be pretty good about getting it to you.
I came here several times w/ MJAA for banquet, so I can't review for an individual diner's experience, but I can write about the quality of their dishes.
-- my special love here is their "pumpkin w/ ground meat"... you have to order this one when you come here for a large group dinner. =)
-- and their sweet sticky rice dessert s/ red bean paste is excellent as well, it comes in a pineapple shell. SWEET!!
They have ' "Egg Foo Yang" on their menu!!! I have not seem a 'real' Chinese restaurant has Egg Foo Yang on their menu. That should have warned me not to expect authentic Chinese food here ...
- Honey walnut shrimp - there were exactly 6 walnuts, yes, we counted ;)
- china Stix Tofu - decent spicy but the portion is so petite
- sweet & sour fish Chinese style -- at least that's what we thought we order, there was no S&S but just fish over veggies; our waiter told us that's what S&S fish is... hum....
- Onion stir fried Lamb - this was ok not too gamy
I can get pass the American Chinese food, but can't with the service. The waiter was MIA the moment all the dishes arrived, and didn't show up ONCE afterward. Other waiters and bus person were nice and refilling our water etc.
This place used to be my go to Chinese food place. Their combination chow mein is pretty good. My other favorites are wonton soup, honey pecan prawns, chicken potstickers.
Unexpected. Unassuming. Unobtrusive.
Never one to eat Chinese food when sober, I was befuddled when the bf's parents announced that we'd be having a taste of China in the land of Korean bbq and kimchi. What's more, the place is difficult to find, nestled in a dilapidated parking lot friendly with a lonely Mervyn's.
China Stix, however, is that proverbial book that you should never judge by its cover. The secret of the Stix, is to order nothing you know and everything you don't. This meal took my tastebuds into the land of the delicious unknown!
Things to devour!
- Sauteed shrimp in crispy noodle nest and lettuce cup
- Twice cooked fresh white fish tossed in a succulent spicy sauce
- Earthy soup with 8 herbs, goodies, meats, and more!
- Spiced pork filled steamed pumpkin!
- Braised napa cabbage in savory umami sauce!
- Dessert: Sweet rice, dates, red bean paste stuffed pineapple!
The service was leaps and bounds from Gary Danko, but the tea pot was always full and piping hot and the timing of the 8 dishes was impeccably timed!
Just remember to eat outside the box at Stix!
China Stix is really good at what they do. They serve both "americanized" Chinese food (sweet and sour pork, chicken chow mien, broccoli beef etc.) but they also provide more authentic dishes (cold meat platters, peking duck, pork spareribs in gord,) The dim sum is tasty, they serve the warm soy milk with Chinese donuts, which I really like.
Last night we came here for fathers day with the families. There were 10 of us total, and we tried the fathers day special for the night. They brought us out 10 to 12 dishes including a couple deserts. The food was really good, and everything was prepared well. No complaints. Just plain solid!
Nice service
I usually go for dinner
Tofu, Sparerib are pretty good.
We had our wedding reception/banquet here 3 weeks ago. My only complaints are the English name, and the view from the outside - not the greatest. However, the people here are extremely nice, including Frank, the owner, and the banquet manager (his name escapes me at the moment). They have been doing this for over 20 years, and they are good at what they do. They kept the place open longer than usual for us, and they set up the room exactly how we wanted, including a projector and dance floor.
And the food! We liked it. It's not rock-your-socks-off, but Chinese banquets usually aren't. We enjoyed the food, and they didn't charge us ridiculous prices just because we were having a wedding.
All in all, I liked China Stix, and I would have my reception there again. We had so much fun at our reception, and the people at China Stix helped make that happen. Plus, they dealt with our countless visits and questions. Way to go!
Mouth is on fire! Hot damn! haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa....ot!
Sitting on couch, legs under me (ya know, Indian Style), and eating some Mongolian Beef. Wait, sorry...the lights are off, and I am watching a movie too. Got it pictured? Well, then...a bite into a pepper and feel all the little firecrackers (seeds) go off in my mouth. Daaaaaaaaaaang.
I just happened to get one spicey pepper...but, it didn't matter...the mongolian beef was good once I ate a fortune cookie and drank down some tea.
Anyway...They are so happy here!
Pretty good food to-go. I ordered mongolian beef, prawns with veggies, hot/sour soup, and they gave me a free small chicken salad.
Mongolian Beef was pretty good.
Prawns, not so.
Hot/Sour Soup was regular.
Chinese Chicken Salad...just how I like it.
It is easy to pick-up food here...we'll be back...but, maybe only when my mouth cools down. Where's the rice?
Just went there for dinner tonight. We ordered a set menu with 6 dishes and one soup. A church friend gave us a coupon so that we got additional free lobster as well. :) All the food tasted really delicious, and the service was also fast and great. Highly recommended!
First thing I noticed about this place during dinner that I didn't see during dim sum is that there were a lot of white people eating here. To be more specific, there were a lot of white senior citizens eating here. You know what they say, when there are a lot of white senior citizens, they usually know where to go to eat for the best value...
So we wait, for about 15 minutes, and at first they sat my family in 4 separate tables. Then my uncle-in law (Chinese) came in and told off the staff. And just like that, they busted out the 2 jumbo tables to seat us all together. I guess this restaurant seems to know their customers well... hehe!
This place is fairly cheap. We ordered the Shanghai steamed dumplings, kung pao beef, walnut prawns, beef chow fun, sui mai, shrimp har gaw, steamed spareribs and some other stuff I can't recall..
The staff here is very friendly and service on the spot as our tea pot and drinks were refilled consistently. I would defiantly come back and try some other stuff as we were already too stuffed beyond recognition..
Pros: Plenty of parking, friendly staff, quick service, good value.
Cons: Gets crowded during lunch hours and for dim sum on weekends.
All i can say is GAG ME WITH A CHOP STIX!!!
I've had better Chinese food at MR. CHOWS chain restaurants and that is not a compliment people.
I haven't yelped in a very long time but this place made me want to that's how disappointed I was!
So it didn't look busy and I was on a lunch but it needed to be quick and the food was quick which i had a bad feeling about.
I order the combo plate. It came with lemon chicken what looked like look long fried batter sticks that had no flavor and the lemon sauce was some gross sticky stuff. The fried rice was mushy, the chicken salad was made with old iceberg lettuce, the chow main was soggy and very plan with some old green onions and the soup was some thick stuff that tasted like MSG . The highlight was the 1 fried chicken wing that was the appetizer. I had odered some pot stickers separately that weren't that bad.
Not worth 13 bucks. The only reason they got 2 stars was because it was fast and the service was good.
Well that's what I get because i could have had some good Korean food or Indian food giving the location..........
I would actually give this place 3.5 stars!
I came here yesterday for my birthday dinner #2!! :D My college friends treated me out here for my bday! ^^ So nice of them! Surprisingly, it wasn't super packed here on Saturday at 7pm! Maybe more people are eating at home?
We ordered...
- Honey pecan prawn!! (the shrimps were HUGE. i would only come here for this!)
- Mu shu veggie pancake (yumyumyum)
- Chicken lettuce wrap (pretty good)
- Orange chicken (not your typical deep fried kind that I was expecting and therefore wasn't super impressed)
- Vegetable show mein (it was bland. and not worth $7.25. get meat next time for just a little more)
The tea was luke warm and not HOT! The food felt very salty because I was constantly drinking my tea! They say they don't put MSG, but there's something that made us all thirsty. Very quick service and they are extremely friendly, especially if you have a baby with you! haha :P
I will try the dessert here next time that everyone keeps talking about.
Called in to order to-go, when I got there no one felt the need to ask if I needed help or whatever, ended up waiting 15min for my food that was already ready when I arrived, but no one felt the need to tell me. The chicken fried rice wasn't that great. The Chinese salad was decent. The mongolian beef was good, but not the best. The cashew chicken was ok, never tried it before so I didn't know what to expect. LETS JUST SAY I'VE TASTED BETTER AT PANDA EXPRESS...With that said I probably won't go back because the food wasn't that mmmazing and the service was crap.
LETS JUST SAY I'VE TASTED BETTER AT PANDA EXPRESS....
hehe..... one of my college romance started here in this restaurant.
The only time i frequent this place is for to-go orders - I've never actually eaten inside...
Lunch specials are pretty decent $6/plate which is a pretty good value - to go values are pretty good too since you get a freebie when you hit $17 or $27 - pretty good stuff from fried rice to egg rolls to chinese chicken salad - good stuff...quality is good, portions are decent and the staff is friendly
Recently they started this 5% back program - if you keep something the size of a business card, they track your purchases and you get 5% back from the pre-tax price - pretty neat.
Now this review is only for dimsum on weekends and special occasion food. I've been here once for a wedding reception and another time for a baby's b.day. The special occasion food was tastier than I'd expected from a Chinese restaurant in a dead plaza. They don't serve typical banquet food. They have unique twists to possibly traditional foods. For example, I loved how they baked a pumpkin with meat inside. The presentation was great as well as the taste. Even the sweet rice cake dessert is different than other Chinese restaurants. It's not as sweet but light and almost fluffy.
This place has become one of my favorite dimsum places. Why? They don't add MSG to their food. Woohoo! Okay, the ingredients may have MSG already in it, but at least they don't add extra. (I can taste MSG from a mile away.) I love how they have warm soy milk (love the sweet kind) as part of the dimsum. They also serve traditional Taiwanese breakfast foods like the fried bread. That's what makes this dimsum unique. They also serve small cold platters that go well with porridge. Their dimsum can be quite comforting food when your stomach's empty. The traditional steamed dimsum is equally amazing. They don't skimp on the ingredients. The gai-lan isn't swimming in grease, thank you very much.
One important thing... hot sauce on the table. We never have to bug the servers for more hot sauce every 15 mins.
Now I would've given them 5 stars, but I simply don't like the decor (needs an update) and restroom. I always try not to go to restroom when I'm there since it's the typical Chinese restaurant restroom. Just keep your eyes up and don't look on the ground. If not, it's hard to continue eating. Well, that's just me.
At least three completely different sets of elders in my life all come to this place to have their banquets, so my guess, just as with Su Hong in Palo Alto, is if you know what to order, you get authentic and delicious chinese food, and if you don't, you get...chop suey. I've generally enjoyed the food here. It's not particularly fancy, but pretty good. I think having the banquet rooms are a huge plus if you have a big party, so that is the big draw.
At the last banquet I ate here recently, we had:
Minced fish in Lettuce cup (decent)
Peking Duck (decent)
Honey Pecan Prawn (very good)
China Stix Short Ribs (very good)
Assorted Vegetable with Kabocha Squash (very good)
Steamed Virginia Ham and Chicken in Lotus Leaves (very good)
Hunan Family Style Tofu (good)
Stir fried Snap Peas, Yellow Chives and Assorted Seafood (very good)
Sweet Rice in Pineapple Bowl (decent)
Mango Flan (good)
This is easily one of the worst Chinese restaurants I have ever visited. The rice was crusty. The noodles were mega greasy and barely heated. The meat was mega chewy and it was barely warm as well. Did they microwave my meal?
Everyone at my table seemed pretty disappointed, except for the damn person who brought us here. And well, by the conversation, she did not seem to eat much outside of American and Mexican food. So yeah, she is a bit sheltered when it comes to Asian cuisine.
The place also smells terrible. I could not pinpoint it. Maybe there dim sum is the selling point, but they had some really creepy dishes on the cart that they were offering us. One looked like it was molding or something.
So yeah, this place looks, smells, and tastes bad in every possible way.
Why would anyone come here? Maybe the price? Who knows.
Basura!
Surprisingly bad Chinese food despite being a busy place with good lunch deals. Went to lunch here and $7 will get you get soup, Chinese chicken salad, fried rice, noodles, and a main entree. In addition, there are 1-2 dim sum carts going around in case you are in the mood for dim sum instead or a hybrid meal.
Egg drop soup - bland and unexciting
Chinese chicken salad - comes on the plate with your hot food - lettuce was warm and dressing was unmemorable.
Fried rice - just there
Noodles/chow mein - bland, just tasted like noodles w/soy sauce
Kung pao chicken - no pow at all in the kung pao
BBQ pork rice noodle dim sum - probably one of the worst non-authentic tasting I've ever had
Bottom line: Good prices and cool to have both Chinese menu options and dim sum but gives Chinese food a bad name. Makes Panda Express seem like gourmet Chinese food.
I ate here last year for a friends wedding. To be honest the food was not really that great I came for the entertainment and support for the wedding. Also i came a little late as well So i guess all the left overs were on the plate as well.
everyone always like to eat the good parts and leave the left overs for the fat people to eat because they eat everything. and I'm one of the fat people.
The food here is great. I just cannot believe how long it took me to eat here. I mean I lived in Santa Clara not too far from here for so many years and I always just drove by like it did not exist to me. I love the beef chow fun and mu shu vegetable. I always, always order those. Their sweet and sour chicken isn't bad and the crab wontons are different but not bad either, if you like cream cheese you'll like the crab wontons. Everyone there treats you like family. I noticed that they have dozens of regulars that the owner knows by name. Its kind of like those mom and pops places that you see on TV where everyone knows each other and has great food.
I wanted to go to dim sum with some friends who lived in Santa Clara, and they recommended this place, so we came to eat here on a Sunday around noon. We waited for about 20 minutes before getting seated. Not bad at all for a dim sum place. Anyway, onto the review.
Since there were 6 of us, we got to try quite a few dishes, including one I'd never had before. Pretty much everything is average dim sum fare, though. The pork buns were good, I'll admit, but the har gao were steamed a little too long, but that's true for quite a few dishes (the chicken feet actually benefit from this). The new dish I had seemed to be a variant of the shrimp in fried bean curd, and was more like a spring roll, but with that tofu skin texture and powdered lightly on the outside. It was quite good, and I've never seen it at other dim sum restaurants.
Anyway, there's not much exceptional about this restaurant, but the prices are pretty good. It was about $13 per person, which is generally good. I'd probably come back here if I was in the area and wanted that one dish. Though, one of the down sides about this restaurant is that it's the only thing left in the plaza that it's located at. There used to be a Mervyns and Albertsons, but now that they're gone, it's really like China Styx is alone in a ghost town.
I was looking for some good dim sum close to home and this seemed like the best rated one in San Jose, so off with some friends!
When we got there it was super busy, we waited about 20 minutes to get a table. We were promptly seated and given a pot of tea and waited for the carts to roll our way...and waited....and waited... Perhaps we had a bad corner?
We went with a lot of the traditional dishes, shrimp dumplings, rice noodles, chinese chive dumplings, marinated pork, bbq pork buns, pot stickers, chicken feet, daikon cake, etc. All of it was very good, I was impressed! We also ordered some edamame, which I wasn't sure why they had there in the first place. It was horrid! The edamame was cold and seasoned with white pepper. Yuck.
Anyways, despite the slow service (waited for another 15 minutes to get the check), and their edamame, the resturant is overall a good spot for dim sum. I'll be stopping by again when I get another craving.
One of the best Chinese restaurants I've been to. The Mandarin beef, Pork Fried Rice, Broccoli Beef and Cashew Chicken are my favorites. Chow mein and Pecan Prawns are also delicious. Mu Shoo Pork, egg rolls, fried won tons also some of my regular items ordered. Everything is fresh and the quality is consistent no matter when you order. If you buy enough during one order, they give you a free item which is very nice.
The only downside is that they don't make sweet and sour pork or lemon chicken the right way. They cook up the battered pieces of meat alone and give you the sauce to put it on it separately. That is a bummer. But I still go here anyway and just order other things -- so that tells you something. Because normally I can't live without sweet and sour pork.
Mediocre Chinese food.
I think of this place as having hole in the wall, greasy Chinese food in a "nicer" setting. Don't get me wrong, you won't feel like you are in some 5 star French restaurant but by typical Chinese restaurant standards it is above average.
Anyway went recently for Dim Sum. Some of the basic appetizer dishes like the seaweed and peanuts look like they are 6 months old. From shrimp dumplings to pork buns the common theme was mediocrity or "I've had better." It is just average northern style dim sum food.
On the positive side service was actually pretty good. There was a constant stream of people with their carts peddling the food. I never had to ask for drink refills as a waiter would quite reliably come to check our water or tea. Price wise it was pretty good as well, considering the amount of food we ordered. I came with 15 people and including tax/tip the total was only about 13 a head.
I cannot say I won't return because over the last 15 years I have been here probably a dozen and a half times. I just cannot really recommend it.
Never ordered off of the menu with English on it. I suppose the negative reviews are related to that.
We ordered off of *the other* menu. Definitely bring someone who reads Chinese if you want to eat there. Otherwise be prepared for the mundane.
Good place and value for wedding and family banquets.
Yummy Chinese Food
My mom dragged me here because she loves to eat here.
We had the pickled veggie fish clay pot which was really good. I love fish and seafood so it was super delicious.
We also got the loofah with the clams. Not very many clams were served but the loofah is good!
And the shrimp lettuce wraps are very good:) I had a good time eating here.
For dessert we had the sticky rice soup. It was flavored with fruit... I haven't seen that before ... very unique but a little too sweet.
I really like the place and I can't wait to come back to try more dishes.
This place is packed! We came here because Kobe was closed on a Sunday. The dim sum is just okay. However, they did have some different items not at every dim sum place.
This is the place that usually caters lunch at work for us when we order Chinese.
I had white rice, china stix chicken, cashew brocolli, and honey pecan prawns here (not really a meal I'd order for myself).
The china stix chicken is not bad but I do not like the sauce they use on it. I also do not appreciate the hidden chili peppers they throw in there either.
The honey pecan prawns were actually pretty good. You could taste the honey sauce in the pecans. Really tasty and addictive.
The cashew brocolli was pretty good. Maybe a little too much sauce but not bad otherwise.
Also I would like to note that this place always has the lamest fortune cookies!!!
I would definitely like to try other food at this place, it's a lot better than some other Chinese restaurants I've tried.
Great place for a banquet. But it is as good as you come with your family or friends. The seafood is so fresh. Fish in lettuce cup is a must try for appetizer. I tried the fried squid, it wasnt too oily and it's all crispy. The crab in ginger sauce was delicious, you can tell that the cab was fresh. Although I dislike the resturant's setting for lack of private booths, the food and the service were excellent. I've been here 5 times and definitely will come again.
Wow, I haven't done a review in a while. Time to review some place. That some place will be...you guessed it: CHINA STIX (Yeah, that wasn't too hard to guess).
My friend just had his wedding reception/dinner there. Pretty good food with lots of different flavors. The dish that stuck out the most from the set menu was the "spicy" pork spareribs in a squash. It stuck out for two reasons:
1) IT WAS IN A SQUASH! Crazy cool look and not too bad in the flavor department.
2) it wasn't spicy at all. MASS disappointment. NO SPICE AT ALL...not even a touch of heat.
The tastiest was the seabass. I forgot how it was prepared, but MAAAAAN that was good eats. Cha-ching, so I'll only eat if someone else buys for me, but I MAY splurge on that one again since it was REALLY tasty.
Difficult finding the place since it's in the back behind Boston Market and hidden away in the shopping center where Mervyn's is, but its worth the hunt.
I was gonna give this place a mere 3 stars, but like Mario Party, I give bonus stars. A bonus star for the help there. The guy saw me and my wife with our baby stroller and he helped move it out of the way by giving us a high chair and folded up some table cloths to support her in the back since she's really tiny still. MAD PROPS to that guy (whoever you are).
Another one of the fallen...
Their dim sum menu has shrunken considerably, including the loss of a few of their classics (like the zhua bing/thousand layer pancake). Dinner quality has fallen off dramatically, with lackluster taste and presentation and waitstaff that just don't seem to care. (We asked twice for a glass of water, which didn't arrive until we were almost done eating).
While I'll probably be back as a part of family gatherings, I can't actually recommend this place anymore.

Beware of bait and switch!
We ordered the 6-person "Chinese New Year" special. After 3 dishes were served, they told us that they were out of lobsters and had to substitute them with crabs. Then a few minutes later, they had to substitute the fish too. What a crab! They should let customers know up front what's not available so we could have ordered something else.
As a person living in the Bay Area, I know there is more "authentic" Chinese food around.
But, as a white person who likes things like broccoli beef and crab rangoon, this place is damn good.
The atmosphere is off though, it's in the back of a tired strip mall that time apparently forgot, the upside is there is plenty of parking. The interior is well lit, and spacious. Service is friendly. But it's dated.
It's a tiny bit on the pricey side, but inflation keeps on trucking, so I am not sure my expectation there is fair.
We like the garlic chicken the best. The fried rice is always good. The Chinese Chicken Salad is a favorite of my Father In Law.
The portions are well sized and the quality of the meat in every dish I have ever had is excellent. Not too fatty, well cut, well seasoned. They do not "fill" their dishes with the cheap vegetables and skimp on the good stuff either. The veggies are always well prepared, firm and not over cooked.
They have a deal where if you order a certain amount of takeout, you geta freebie, and so even though it's 20 minutes away from where we live, we get take out from here instead of the convenient place 5 minutes away.
The leftover always reheat well, and so I get several meals out of what I order.
I'd consider this place a staple. You always know the quality, and while it's nothing "fancy" or impressive, it's always consistently good.
What? so few stars? I don't think so!
China Stix is so good! The food is always extremely fresh and so tasty! And they're always coming out with new special dishes that amaze and awe.
I usually go for dinner and big family banquets, so we order special stuff like their steamed pork in a pumpkin, the virginia ham sandwich (really quite special and different from what you might be thinking), sometimes we get the fried dough pancake (zua bing)...and then the pork, fish and vegetarian dumplings are also a favorite.
They also have special appetizers and desserts for these occasions and any ol' day. Also, my dad is vegetarian, and the chef is great at creating new dishes just for him...that everyone enjoys cuz it's so good.
One of their special desserts is the sticky rice with red bean paste in a pineapple...mmm, it's SO good. ahh, yes.
