China Express Take Out
2 reviews for China Express Take Out
I love finding good solid chow at vacation destinations. China Express will serve you a healthy meal that you won't regret for around ten bucks each. It's a slightly rundown restaurant with a standard Chinese menu. The dinner plates were a mishmash of cheap Corelle from the seventies, paper place mats with the Chinese zodiac looked up from under the glass table tops - so you get the idea. There are about 100 paper lanterns with red tassels hanging everywhere.
We had the mushu chicken, war won ton soup, and orange glaze chicken. We all loved each of the dishes. The mushu came pre-rolled - big fat ones loaded with fresh veggies. My daughter raved about the orange chicken. My favorite was the soup.
The Yelp map is wrong - it's on the mountain side facing the main street in Kings Beach, in the last storefront of a strip mall. Not fancy - but a good $30 meal for three.
This is the very definition of a hole in the wall. Or maybe its the fact they do have holes in the walls (two wood, one brick, and one...I'm not sure) with a hodgepodge of tables and chairs with some old standing video game completely out of place in the corner. You'd miss it if you blinked or even thought of blinking.
Lydia, the owner, barks at everyone. "Amigo" if you're remotely Latin, barked out in her broken English.
The menu of Chinese food is extensive and heavy on the veggies. The hot and sour soup has lots of peas and zucchini, which was a nice touch but I'm not sold on it as an addition to the traditional recipe.
The garlic chicken was very spicy, with lots of chili paste and less garlic than I'd like. The chicken fried rice was well done and pretty standard. However, the veggie egg rolls were excellent.
If you can deal with an eccentric owner/chef/waitress, this is a great place to fill your belly after a long day at Northstar.
