6 reviews for China Cafe
Excellent lunch specials for a very low price- $6 for a HUGE container of food. Yum yum!
Big menu, as you find as most Chinese places. I usually order the meat (shrimp, usually) in spicy garlic sauce. I ordered the Mongolian beef once and won't do it again- it tasted good but it was pretty greasy and I did not feel delightful when I was done. I am a little weary of Chinese chicken, so I generally won't order chicken until I get to know the place a little. With the good reviews of the sesame chicken, I guess it's safe to try it now. :-) It is my favorite, after all!
Two stars for the food (and I'm being generous, here)
I really wanted to like this place. Unfortunately, after I took a bite of the Kung Pao Chicken, I knew I was going to regret coming here for lunch. First, the egg drop soup was passable. However, they should have left the grayish-green peas and cubed carrots out. Sometimes less, is more.
The waitresses timing was off; I took four slurps of the soup and my entree came out. It wasn't like there was a "lunch rush" or anything. They had a couple of other tables but she spent most of her time behind the counter.
The Kung Pao Chicken looked appetizing. It was aesethically pleasing, no problem there. Lots of veggies, colors, chicken and peanuts. One major problem: THE SAUCE WAS NOT GOOD. At first, I could tell they added too much vinegar; I could taste the pepper flakes too and then some garlic (I like pepper & garlic); However, it was pretty flavorless, overall. I've had more flavor in a frozen dinner. Bleech. I added a little soy sauce to make it more palatable and it just ended up making a salty dish more salty. I drank the entire pot of tea.
The cream cheese/crab wonton would have been better if the cheese had melted inside.
Lunch was a deal $7.03 and the portions were generous. I tried this place about ten years ago, upon the recommendation of a co-worker and to my dismay, nothing has changed. I didn't enjoy it then and I did not enjoy the food today.
In the strip mall, by Tar-shay.
I don't get it. Why is it so GD hard to find a decent place for greasy counter-type chinese food in Denver?!
I'm a South Jersey transplant and can't get over the utter lack of moo shu, cold sesame noodles in this town. While I am happy to discover that China Cafe has edible offerings (after six years of living in the hood, convincing myself that it was unsuitable for consumption), I am still very disappointed in the Chinese offerings in the Mile high city.
I've yet to have a decent egg roll and do not recommend these. In fact, they were so yucky, neither of us finished. The hot and sour soup was passable on Day 1, but made us sick on Day 2 after reheating.
The "fried rice" served as an accompaniment has NOTHING else in it - no veggies. nothing. I have never seen such a thing in my life.
Kung Pao Chicken - passable.
Shrimp Lo Mein - passable.
Spicy Curry Chicken - good.
"cheese" wontons - where the h*ll is the cheese? euw.
I'd get it again in a pinch, but was hoping for so much more.
Please allow me to begin my review with a soapbox manifesto.
Although I'm by no means a fast food teetotaler, there are some chains that really do make me wonder why the public is willing to sacrifice TLC for cholesterol and convenience. Panda Express is on the top of the list. It's a mystery to me why people are willing to part with their hard-earned cash for uniformly bland, sugar-overdosed Chinese food...when there are wonderful little spots like China Cafe that deliver much more tantalizing food for practically the same price.
I love this place, and I can't pick out just one reason why I keep coming back. It's one of those places that doesn't do a couple things extremely well, but they manage to do EVERYthing with reliable skill and consistency.
The menu has wide variety, and the food has never disappointed me. Like similar mom n pop restaurants, they've got pork, beef, and chicken dishes out the yin-yang, but plenty of veggie dishes, too. Their appetizer menu--particularly their crab wantons--are the stuff of comfort food heaven. Their entrees are equally appetizing, and seriously satisfying. The chicken dishes are my favorite, and if I sense a cold coming on, I've learned that their chicken curry is the fastest way to boost my immune system.
I have a friend who swears by their Sesame Chicken. We once had a Christmas Eve dinner at the China Cafe, and she raved about the dish for literally weeks afterwards. "The glaze, John...I mean, that GLAZE....."
The service here is friendly and attentive, and although they do pretty good business, the dining room never gets too loud. I always elect to dine in here. The wait staff is courteous as hell (well, a very accommodating version of hell), and I've never had to wait more than five minutes after placing my order to receive my food. See why my Panda Express rage is at least partially justified, people??
The only knock I have against China Cafe is it doesn't have much in the way in ambiance. In high school, I worked as a dishwasher at a local Chinese joint a lot like this one, and I can say that the level of cleanliness and 'mood' in China Cafe is about on par with my former employer. I hope their kitchen is a little cleaner than ours was...but it's not like the safety inspector should be keeping tabs on them or anything. Just not the kind of place you'd take a first, second or third date. Home run dates are gonna love it here, though.
So if you've had your fill of sugary, styrofoam-based orange chicken from Panda clad chains...make tracks to China Cafe.
I'd love to find out if this place is as good as the reviews, but it seems every time I call, they aren't doing deliveries. Annoying!
This place is good if you want something quick and satisfying. I like their Sesame Chicken, very good and I'm sure it's not waist friendly but it's very delicious. Yum!
