Growing up, one of my favorite savory treats was my Nana's empanadas hot out of the oven.  Hers were spanish style-thick, hearty and charmingly practical.  To be honest, I haven't had an empanada in years since she stopped making them.

While nobody can make empanada's like Nana, the empanadas at Chile Lindo are damn tasty!  She has a number of exciting types with a delicious crust and savory fillings.  I got one thinking it would be only a snack but was full-as-a-meal after I ate mine.

I'm excited to check her out at el esperpento which just happens to be my favorite tapas place in the city (because the tapas are amazing and they also serve my favorite beer, estrella galicia).

I had my first (delicious) authentic Chilean Chile Lindo empanada in Dolores park last month and LOVED IT! It was beef, but was surprised & delighted to find it also had hard boiled egg, olives, raisins & more, all sauteed in a delicious spice.

Lastnight I had my second at her new location, next to Esperpento on 22nd & it was just as delicious as the first. Possibly even better because I was able to enjoy it with a cold Spanish beer & enjoy the cozy atmosphere of her new space!

Here's the Yelp page for the new location:

I haven't eaten an empanada since I was in Argentina 11 months ago. Very sad. I've been craving one for so long. My boyfriend's Chilean roommate told me about this place, which is hidden on the corner of Capp and 16th. He said it was very good, which means I had to try it.

Finally had the chance to visit the place today! $5 per empanada. This time there was a meat one and a cheese/jalapeno one. We got two meat empanadas that had just come out of the oven. They were still piping hot 15 minutes later when we got back to our apartment.

The empanada is about 6 inches long on its longest side, so pretty big (good for a snack or small lunch). The outside pastry is made very well. Tasty, browned, flaky, yet with some firmness. The meat inside is also very good, with beef, onions, some olive and raisins, and egg (that's all I saw in it). Be careful with the juices; they're burning hot. The flavor as a whole reminded me of Argentine empanadas. Yummmyyyy!!!

We got to talk to the owner a little bit, who is very smiley, friendly, and nice (she also washed her hands before handling the empanadas, so it's a clean place!). This location is their "factory" where they make the empanadas. You can buy them here but they're only open here on the weekends. They have another location on 22nd St., open Thursday-Sunday from 6:00pm to 11:30pm (or something like that...basically in the evenings/nights) where you can have empanadas with beer and wine.

Of course these empanadas are more expensive than what you can get in Latin America, but I don't know of any other place in the Mission that sells these so fresh and tasty. The size is larger than any empanada I've had in Argentina, so I don't mind paying $5 for a tasty tasty empanada in the Mission. =)

Will come back for more!!!!!!

Stopped by randomly  at the new location on 22nd--- it was around 11pm on a Thursday. It's a cute little place, and they only had meat empanadas left. They were a little cold, but i think they would have been better piping hot though the makings were there for an exceptional empanada had it been hot --- tasty seasoned beef, hardboiled egg, raisins and tasty but solid dough encasing the whole thing. Also, the service was a bit off kilter, but it may have been that they were closing up for the night, but wasn't sure. We asked for hot sauce, but were offered the remnants of the hot sauce on someone elses table. it was a little odd, and at 5 bucks per empanada, I feel like our own new hot sauce would be a given.

I had heard the NPR interview they did with Paula (the owner) and decided I needed to check out the chilean empanadas.  My date and I went to Chile Lindo's new digs on 22nd. Street. It was about 11:00pm on a Saturday nite.  Soooo glad we found the place.  It's tiny, but so full of warmth. The place is beautifully decorated with simple Chilean artifacts and paprika-colored walls. We had a meat, and a cheese empanada.  Both very good and just enough for a late night snack attack.  Paula offers wine and beer-small selection, but all tasty.  Pricing info: 2 empanadas, a beer, and a full glass of good, smooth merlot: $19.  But more than the food was Paula enchanting smile and relating her stories of struggles and triumphs on her empanada journey.  You go girl!  We'll be back!

Really good, authentic empanadas!
Only open on weekends, so stop by and stock up for the week.
They need to put their name on the storefront, but till then, just look for the 2nd door from the left of the building, on the north side of 16th.
