4 reviews for Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine
I visited this museum with a group of girl friends and we had the greatest time. You think this place is just for kids? Well, you're right. It's great for kids both big and small! We had an awesome time playing with all of the interactive exhibits ourselves while little ones ran around us. We felt right at home among them.
My favorite part of the museum was the Camera Obscura show. I don't care how old you are, you will enjoy this show, period. The museum has a massive camera lens at the top of the building that shows you a live view of the everything going on outside of the building. I honestly cannot do the show justice with words here. If you find yourself in Portland and can make it down to the museum, please find some time to take in the show, okay?

This place is wonderful - one of the highlights of our trip to Maine. There is a theater downstairs complete with kid-friendly 'sound board' - dubbed in applause and other sound effects take playing dress-up to a whole new level. The Farm and Grocery store are partnered in one section and makes it natural for city kids to grasp where supermarket food comes from. The outdoor pirate ship and drums, the rocket ship, and the We Are Maine exhibit made for hours of endless exploration. We added to the "pig pile" (donation) and can't wait to go back.
We visited about a month ago with our two year old. I think I would give the museum a higher rating, except it was super crowded that day and our toddler was a complete grump. It had been raining non-stop earlier in the week, so I'm sure that was the reason for the museum being overrun. Anyhow, there are a lot of different kid areas. I personally loved the globe. My son loved the outdoor picnic area with the ship and the musical instruments.
And did I mention that the admission fee was a little steep? Portland is getting VERY precious.
As an out-of-towner, we've been to a couple different of these types of Children's Museums in the north east and this one is definitely the best one we've been to so far. Three floors of activity and a pirate ship outside (which was a HUGE hit with my three yr old boy). We stayed for almost three hours and he would have stayed all day! There may be a better "museum" of this type out there but we haven't been there yet!
