If you're the type of diner who judges a book by a cover, or a restaurant by its storefront, I challenge you to make the exception for Chilangos. Inside a relatively nondescript building in Olneyville sits a festive Mexican masterpiece.

Adding to its charms are Chilangos' bright colors, beautiful wood detailing on the booths and tables, warm service, and delicious food. Also, funky little features like a family table that manages to be intimate (with plants and a half wall) despite its position in the middle of the restaurant on the second level. Also on the second level, at the bar, some of the coolest stools I have ever seen: SADDLES!

You have to have a BEERGARITA! Yes, a beer margarita. My dining companion couldn't finish her drink, and I wouldn't let it go un-drunk.

Great mixology, fast and attentive service, immaculate open kitchen, and the food! Delicious! Go there! Tonight!

I went to this place sometime back and had a terrible experience. I decided to go again this evening to see if it lived up to it's current and near 5 star rating on Yelp. This time I ordered completely different menu items than the last time (5 years ago). I ordered flautas, nopalitos, a torta, and a perro salado and NOPE this place has NOT changed a bit - this place is the WORST food I have EVER eaten not to mention the worst MEXICAN food I have ever eaten. Heck, you could have a better Mexican meal at the Cheesecake Factory, Whole Foods or even Taco Bell for that matter! Even the chips were bad - I should have taken this as foreshadowing a bad meal!

I think the people who have reviewed this highly with near 5 stars are compensated to do this or even bribed while at the restaurant (i.e. "Hey, free drinks on the house if you give us high reviews."). There is absolutely NO way this place stands near close its high ratings.

I live on the border to Mexico and Mexican food generally isn't very gourmet - truthfully, it is very poor food. Places like Chipotle, Boloco, Qdoba, Cheesecake Factory, make it gourmet. In saying that Mexican food tends to comprise of poor ingredients, I am suggesting that I did not go to Chilango's with the highest of expectations as in I did not expect it to be gourmet, of anything, the ingredients should be at a higher level than what I am use to in my poor border-town city. This place was just the pits. The flautas were not made fresh, they tasted worse than the microwavable kind that you can find in the frozen section. They tried to garnish it with black beans, and pico de gallo - sorry guys you weren't able to mask how bad this was. My fork could not even cut into it, the chicken in the inside was so dry, the tortilla was so hard. Perhaps the chef, or alleged chef, should learn how to use the microwave better! Geez! The nopalitos were cold, yes I understand this is a salad as per your menu, but you do have to cook nopalitos for them to be edible, and there was evidence that it was cooked before and then just refrigerated. It was just bad! Nopalitos are typically eaten hot, right off the pan, and these were cold and labeled as a "salad". I ordered the torta with fried steak - the fried steak was approximately 1 cm in height - I've seen sliced ham thicker than this! The torta was decent but still sub-par. As for the perro salado that was suggested on Yelp, overwhelmingly sour and salty, not drinkable unless maybe already wasted, does not make me want to have a second sip. I'm confused about what kind of food that drink would go with because it was so unsavory. Typically, no matter how bad a drink is, I will finish it because of its cost, this drink was the first time I could not even get close to finishing. It was so bad. All in all, the only good thing in this place was the bottled Mexican soda.

Take my advice, I went to this restaurant completely open-minded, setting aside the bad experience I previously had, I expected good quality food or even savory food based on these reviews. This place is just so bad, such terrible food. I truthfully think everyone who has listed this place with good reviews was bribed. Look at how exaggerated everyone's reviews are! Steer clear of this place!

Chilangos is by far the best mexican food I have ever had. The owner told me they would be serving breakfast so my boyfriend and I decided to give it a try even though we normally just get tacos or burritos. It was so unexpected and incredible. The combinations were so unusual. It seemed like they really care about the menu and their customers.

I usually get the Chilangos burrito. It's a big pricey for a burrito but you get black beans and rice. The burrito will definitely last two meals. Although the last time I got one it was a bit on the dry side. Usually it is so flavorful and juicy. I think it was just an off day.

Best Mexican in RI.. ya heard....  No Really...  BEST MEXICAN IN RI... That being said.. I don't know how I haven't reviewed this place yet.. it is GREAT.  And I hate when people use all caps.... so that alone should tell you something here.  I have been to Chilango's half a dozen times and every time I am so satisfied and happy with the food, decor, service.. everything.

To start off.. "it's in the ghetto".. ughh... so annoying.  It is down Atwells at the beginning of Manton, it is well lit on a busy street across from a busy gas station.  Relax people.  Don't be scared to wander out of your gentrified neighborhoods.. its ok.. the food is worth it.

The carved wooden tables are the first treat walking in.. followed by the friendliest staff.  We had the cutest little waitress tonight who seated us ASAP and before we knew it an older gentleman brought us our chips and salsa.  Home made salsa is so good... spicey and full of cilantro.. perfect start.. screams to be chased by some tequila.  In the past, I have dabbled in their Margherita menu, but they can be on the sweet side. so I was happy to see the new menu tonight with the Perro Solado on it.. tequila, lime juice and grapefruit soda... it was perfect.  Tart, some salt on the rim, and not too sweet.. my new go to drink.

Now the food...  I call this Authentic Mexican, but I have never been to Mexico, so I could be wrong, but it is genuinely good.. not covered in sour cream and monterey jack cheese.. so I am going with it.  I got a sope.. which is a thick flour cake sort of thing covered with pastor (marinated pork) lettuce, and queso fresco...  with a little house salsa on top... so good.  Next had the Enmolados.. which was enchiladas with shredded chicken.. covered in there amazingly tasty, spicey, chocolatey mole sauce... so effing good..  with some queso fresco and creme fraiche.  Comes with a side of black beans and rice.  Tasty, flavorful, well prepared.. delicious.

So yeah, the food is great... who am i to say whether or not it is 100% authentic.. I know it is 100% good.. made with care.. and that is what is important.  The vibe in this place id friendly, and warm.. and can be wrapped up in a short phrase.. as we were finishing up eating.. the older gentleman who brought out our chips and salsa came over to clear our plates and asked us how it was.. we were all smiles... and said great... he responded with an even bigger smile and beamed with pride.. as he said "mi casa es su casa".. and thats what is all about.  People who are proud of their food and their restaurant and it shows.

The food is excellent, and the selection is incredible. My only problem is that they use MSG in nearly every dish, and based on my physical reaction, they use a lot. I got really sick every time I ate here from the MSG, which is too bad, because the food is amazing. As an FYI, Tinka, who gave it one star, gave Red Lobster 4 stars.

Update! They are open again! I called and they said they had some plumbing/electrical work and shut down for a while. My girlfriend and I were just preparing to work our way through the 'Mexican Mile' in Central Falls but I needed my Villa Burrito so we headed straight over. Now, onto the food.

Food was great as always. I had the villa burrito and she had something I cannot pronounce that was like an open face burrito. We also got some tacos and she got one of the newer soups from the menu.

The tacos are on par with Taqueria Lupita and for my money the burrito is untouchable. My GF loved the soup and her entree.

We were especially excited to get our favorite drinks, Perro Slado(sp?). It's grapefruit soda, lime juice and tequila and it's awesome. If you usually go for the margarita at a Mexican place, give this a try instead. They also do a beer margarita which my GF swears is amazing.

Holy Guacamole!   This is the place for Mexican!  Tonight was my first visit and what a first impression it was!  The decor was beautiful, inviting, and unique.  You are immediately blown away by the wood carved and painted tables and benches, while beautiful brightly colored art line the walls.

The immaculate open kitchen adds to the intimate feel as the staff walk around with huge smiles.  The service was attentive, sincere, and friendly.  We received fresh chips and salsa as soon as we sat down.  Our server checked back often and kept our waters full the entire time.

And the food, oh the food!  Fresh! Delicious!  I had the chicken enchiladas with green sauce with a red wine margarita.  The enchiladas came with black beans and rice and were topped with crumbled queso fresco.  The margarita was not only refreshing, but made with house-made tequila.

We peeped saddle bar seats at the bar and we will definitely be back to grab a couple of drinks on the saddle!

Chilangos is just the jam! This place is one of the best spots in Providence because the food is great, the drinks are even better and the service is awesome.

I took my friend there for his birthday and we started with the Perro Salados. This is such a tasty drink. The tequila and grapefruit juice makes a refreshing drink. The juice is fresh squeezed and the tequila itself is so smooth. Believe it or not, the owner's family has a agave farm in Mexico. That is just one of the many reasons why I love this place!

The food is pretty good. The salsa is spicy and I like that. I got the tostada and the pambazo. The tostada had pork, cheese, beans and lettuce and it is a steal of a deal at $2.50. The pambazo is a sandwich priced at $4.50. I had it topped with the tinga, which is nicely spiced pulled chicken. My friend got the enchiladas verdes. For $10 it was a BIG plate!

The service is so great there. The servers are smiling and everyone looks like they are having a good time. The food comes out promptly and we were checked on frequently.

Also, there is a $10 minimum credit card purchase.  So bring cash if you just want small bites.

Definitely not a fan, but was hoping to become one because so many people love this place. On the plus side, the margaritas were good and strong; apparently they make their own tequila in-house which is pretty cool. The atmosphere is interesting.

The downside could basically be summed up in one word: bland. So bland. I ordered the enchiladas, flavor was MIA. It was literally meat, cheese and a flour tortilla with some kind of oil thrown on top... whatever happened to that red sauce that was supposed to be present and accounted for to accompany the enchiladas, I cannot say. The sides were no different, just oil, rice and beans. Yuck.

Also, the salsa... yikes! I have a very tolerant palette for heat and love spicy salsa, but theirs was over the top, which was surprising considering the lack of flavor everywhere else.

I'm disappointed because a lot of my friends love it here, and apparently a lot of other folks on Yelp do too.

I live right near this place, but for some reason I have definitely not visited enough times. My two encounters have given me an overwhelmingly positive view of the restaurant though.

The first time I went, I tried horchata (a rice-based milky beverage with cinnamon/vanilla-y flavor) and it was delicious. I was dying to have it again when I went back but they were out! Instead, the waitress suggested a beverage I didn't catch the name of. It had something along the lines of a raspberry/iced tea flavor, but probably not anything like you would imagine by reading that description. Though the flavor was hard to place, it was refreshing and perfect with the salsa and other spices in the meal. We got guacamole to go with our chips and it was great and really fresh. Only thing I would change is that I wish we got more chips with our salsa/guac. The waitress didn't offer more when we were clearly out, but we didn't ask figuring if they were free she would have offered.

On my first trip I tried the enchiladas mole since it was something I had always heard of and found intriguing but had never had the opportunity to sample before. Frankly, I didn't like it and had a hard time even finishing it. However, I really do chalk that up to individual taste, not the quality of the meal. I don't have the background to judge the authenticity of it or any other items here, but other people I was dining with tasted it and were surprised I didn't like it.

I was unable to find a current menu online to see exactly what I had the next time I visited. But I did a create your own burrito with rice and some sort of beef, sour cream, and a couple other ingredients. It was really good, especially when I added some of our leftover salsa. Without the salsa, it had no real kick it it, but I believe some of the other meats are prepared in a more spicy fashion.

If you're looking for cheap, authentic Mexican food, then Chilangos is the place to go.  I've been here a few times and each time, the food is served cold, so I can't really rant and rave about the eats.  They have very strange hours as well; so your best bet is to call ahead of time to make sure they are in fact, open.  The only thing I really love about this place, are the saddle bar stools and their homemade tequila.

Came for dinner with the roommie.  The chips and salsa came fast! The chips were bland (definitely needed more salt) and the salsa was nice and spicy.  We got margaritas, quesadillas, and a chicken gordita.  I got the guava margarita which was SO delicious.  It was served on the rocks, whereas I prefer mine blended, but it was still very good.  It was also HUGE! Great value for $7.  The chicken quesadilla was bland and the beef quesadilla was much tastier.  They were huge, and cheap, and had lettuce in them.  They really looked like giant soft tacos; not really sure what makes it a quesadilla. The gordita was very bland and not at all what I was expecting.  It looked like a roll made out of the corn stuff you use to make corn tortillas.  The filling was super bland.  If I were just rating the food, it would be a 2 star place.

However, the margaritas were AMAZING, the food was cheap, and the workers were super friendly! I think the owner came by a few times to thank us for coming and making sure that we were happy.  It was such a nice change from the crappy service I'm used to getting here in Providence.

I think I may have just ordered wrong =( I want to come back and try again!

For Providence? Amazing. Best place in the city, easily. Casual, but not dirty taqueria casual, has tequila, and isn't very expensive.

Grab somebody who appreciates the awesome things in life and who's company you love. Walk there. Enjoy the evening air. It's not that bad.
Go up to the cramped little bar, awkwardly straddle a saddle, spin around a little, reach slightly farther than is comfortable to keep your face over your plate so that your food doesn't fall on the floor if you miss your drunk mouth.
Their margaritas are pretty good, the people who work there are friendly and the food is authentic, tasty, and fresh. It's much better than a bunch of white kids sloppily wrapping up a mediocre burrito for you on the east side or trying to deal with the idiots that crowd that stupid shithole Tortilla Flats.

If you want to forget you're in Providence for an hour get over there. Just not when I'm in town, please, because I hate to wait in line.

    Love Chilangos!
The service is a bit slow, but the food is SO good.  I like to get a margarita when I'm there, they usually make them really well and have some interesting flavors. Unfortunately, I feel like sometimes they just use a mix, so it's hit or miss (I just check to see if the bartender is there).
Speaking of the bar, you can literally saddle up! They have 4 or 5 saddles in front of the bar that you sit on while drinking.
There's always room to sit, the waitresses are always so nice, I've never had ANYTHING to complain about here!

So as I posted in my quick tip the salsa is really spicy and while this is usually a turn off for me, for some reason I couldn't stop tormenting myself with it. My burrito was also a little spicier than I expected, so when I left my mouth defiintely had a work out.

I was happy to see that the burrito was not the American version of the burrito, though since I've never been to Mexico, I'm not an expert on whether it was the Mexican version - either way it was yummy.

Overall it was good, but I'm still on the lookout for my favorite Mexican place in Providence, and I don't think this will be it in the end.

Hmmmm... so the guac was good...as was the marg... we started Cinco de Mayo off right.... however the entree I had was pretty bland... I couldn't tell you what it was called, but it was a foot long and some sort of massive chicken taco type thing...it needed sour cream and salt and pepper... and... well, you get the picture. Also, our server was lovely, but we had a difficult time communicating with her as it did not seem English was a language she was fluent in...

We followed a friend's suggestion when we went to Chilango's and please don't let the neighborhood discourage you. The place is noisy and friendly. I liked the kitschy decor.

I had a berry cactus margarita, the best $7 I've ever spent. Be warned, you don't need appetizer WITH a meal, the portions are huge. We had a chicken taquitos for starters, we were surprised by the cheese and the delicious quacamole, we've never had anything so authentic.

For meals I had a Chilangos burrito, stuffed with a god insane amount of meat, cheese and lettuce. Husband got the mole, nice yummy spicy sauce over the wrapped chicken.

Needless to say we were very very happy with the food, the place was loud and the service was slow to start but picked up quickly.  I have nothing bad to say about this evening.

Also, how do people give a review for a place saying that people from Mexico don't know Mexican food. Granted when food is served in another country it's always changed to become more suitable for the people who you are serving but there food is excellent and don't listen to stupid reviews that are written by asshats.

Authentic cuisine and atmosphere.  Kind of sketchy, completely wonderful.  They make great margaritas, freshly produced in house. You won't see a trace of mix here -- fresh juices [lime, tamarind, etc] and tequila produced by the owner's family back in Mexico.

I am not sure people with the negative reviews know much about authentic Mexican food. I don't know what they are looking for, be it big CA style burritos or tex mex style food but that is not what Chilangos does. They serve up extremely authentic Mexican with good meat and good style.

I have been extremely spoiled on good Mexican by living just north of Pilsen/Little Village in Chicago and being inundated with fantastic Mexican. I always considered the northeast a dead zone of good Mexican (I have lived in NYC, Maine, and now RI). Chilangos and Cafe Lupita in Central Falls have changed my opinion. Definitely worth the visit.

Being a Southern California native, I am used to high quailty and really great Mexican food.  When I got to Providence, I searched and searched..and searched.

Finally, I found Chilangos.  Chilangos is a bit harder to find than the other competitors (i.e. Tortilla Flats, Don Jose's, Gordito Burrito), but it's definitely worth getting lost a bit.  The food is really fresh and tastes great!  (I usually get the Enchiladas Verdes, but the burritos are gigantic and really really cheap).

The staff is super friendly, and they have a full bar which is great.  It's a bit "cozy" (aka SMALL) inside, so it can fill up really fast and the waiting line can easily begin to grow very quickly.

Chilangos is the secret restaurant that everybody you meet seems to know about.  It's also the kind of place you could easily drive by without a glance, never imagining that carved wood tables and saddle bar stools lie inside!

The menu is long and offers many inexpensive, small items.  If you're feeling indecisive and hungry, the chicken mole enchiladas are fantastic and filling, served as a full meal with beans and rice.  But a great way to experience Chilango's is by ordering a few small items. The one I am always drawn to is the chiccharone gordita - how could you go wrong with corn dough stuffed with fried pork rind?

They also have a number of drinks.  I have to give my boyfriend credit for introducing me to my favorite, the salty dog - it's very refreshing and a perfect match for the food!

After reading everyones reviews on here I decided to check this place out last night.

When we pulled up I knew my b/f was having second thoughts about dining here..... lets admit... it is in the ghetto.

We walked in and were completely surprised, it is so cute and quaint! We were quickly seated. It was about 6:30, we looked at the menu for a good 15 mins to make a good decision. I had a mango margarita on recommendation from our server, it was really great - very fresh, there were chunks of mango, and the tequila didn't give me a headache. For an appetizer we had the the tamales, one red, one green and one mole. The red one was my favorite, it was super spicy and really great. By the time we finished the tamales, chips and our first round of drinks we were already full.

Our entrees came out and looked just divine, I had the Michoacan enchiladas... I think that is what they were called. Deep fried corn tortillas stuffed with beans, shredded chicken, lettuce, sour cream and avocados on top served with more beans and rice. I really enjoyed my dish. The chicken was great, very fresh and very hot. Unfortunately I still have most of my meal in the refrigerator.. next time I won't order an appetizer.

My boyfriend had the mole enchiladas. According to him they were just okay, not great like he had hoped. To him his dish was flooded with mole sauce and he couldn't taste anything else. He was not a big fan of the mole because all he could taste was molasses. I tried it and liked it, but I think I would only like it in small doses. The flavor I thought was great I could really taste chocolate, coriander and ginger. (His is still sitting in the fridge... I don't think he will finish it.. :( )

We were there for about 2 hours. Our server was really friendly. I enjoyed the long dining experience, my boyfriend not so much. It took 40 mins for our tamales to arrive and then another 25 for our entrees. I didn't mind the wait at all. For a Friday night they were not that busy but I think they had a lot of take out orders.

The prices were great, my giant margarita was $7 my boyfriend's negro modello was $4, the tamales were $4.50 (and plentiful) both of our entrees were $10 each, so with the extra drink the bill was about $54 including tip.

If you are on a budget and want good authentic Mexican food and no alcohol then this is a great place to dine.

Probably my favorite Mexican place in Providence, but not the best I've ever had, not really close.  Good in comparison to other RI places though.

Outstandingly authentic, inexpensive, hip and soulful.  Urban scaredy cats stay away... this is the neighborhood your parents told you to avoid.  I love it.  Not good for a big group, better to seat four together.  Don't miss the bar in back.  Get your fingers all limey.

Stopped by Oct 2007 and they were closed... for good?  Not sure.

The menu has changed somewhat since I visited last year before the temporary closing.

While the food items are high quality and very tasty, the number of choices has been reduced and the prices are slightly higher.   Now you get a plate of 5 enchiladas for $10-12, which is still a good deal.  I'd recommend the tamales appetizer - 3 for $4.50 and quite filling. The free chips and salsas are world-class.

On a Saturday night, my group was 6th on the queue and told that the wait would be 20 minutes.  We were finally seated an hour later.  The lesson is, either a) don't go on a Saturday night or b) with only 11 tables in the restaurant, make your own estimate about the wait time.

This used to be our goto place in providence for mexican food, but unfortunately approx 3-4 years ago it got too popular.  Along with popularity came a less authentic menu, higher prices, and longer waits.

It is still a great place to get inexpensive mexican food (though not cheap like it used to be) and good sized drinks.

Unfortunately, we have not been lately as we have become more loyal to el rancho grande and taqueria lupita.

Really authentic Mexican food, the sopes and the tongue tacos were really good!

I was so disappointed about my visit here.  I had very high expectations since so many people recommended it to me.  In addition, I read such rave reviews here on Yelp! that I was shocked at how dissatisfied I really was.

I ordered the Carne Asada which is one of my favorite Mexican offerings.  The accompaniments were just okay, which was unfortunate because my steak was absolutely crucified.  It wasn't burned, but was totally dried out and CHEWY like jerky.  The flavor was so-so.  I was truly stunned.  I was with someone that I don't know terribly well, so I didn't want to make her uncomfortable by sending my food back.  So, I can't speak for how they would have handled the situation as I didn't give them an opportunity to remedy the problem.

    The salsa, was delicious, however.

The restaurant itself is pretty small and fairly dark inside and definitely loud.  The location is in a so-so area and there is only street parking, which was not easy to come by.

The margaritas are fantastic. They're really more like cocktails, with liqueurs, tequila and pureed fruit. I had a mango margarita and she had a raspberry margarita. We ordered these while we were sitting in the bar's saddle seats waiting for a table to open up. The seats are fun and mildly intimidating at first; I can't lie. I sat sidesaddle like a proper lady; my girlfriend sat like a real cowgirl. The choice is yours.

We ordered a queso fundido appetizer, very good.

I ordered the mole enchiladas and loved them (plenty of leftovers). My girlfriend ordered a chicken gordita which she liked, but said next time she'll order the chorizo gordita because the chicken is a little blander than she likes (not that it was made wrong; it's just the nature of chicken).

The service was great; the restaurant was comfortable; parking wasn't difficult.

I don't want to know why other reviewers have called it "sketchy"; it felt fine to me.

    Great find; we'll go back!

Awesome margaritas and delicious food.  The service can be a bit slow and times but it's well worth the wait.  Authentic Mexican.

My take is they were good for a while, got really good reviews on yelp and word of mouth, then bumped up their prices and added a bunch of BS to cash in.
I went recently and it was pretty disappointing. Really not worth investing the time to discuss.

    Really good, original Mexican food.

This is a small restaurant, and parking outside is sometimes quite difficult to find, as there's no real lot for this place. But it's worth the hike to park a few blocks and still go.

From what I can recall, they bring you two salsas for your chips, both varying in degrees of heat.

My only complaint is that soda is served in a can, which always annoys me a bit because it means ordering several cans to quench your thirst.

Reminded me of a dinner I might find going out to eat with my family in AZ or CA. It's a busy small restaurant that's worth checking out.
