I'm upgrading them to the best dive bar in the area.
The staff is super friendly, they treat you like "Norm".
There is usually free appetizers such as hot wings or pizza from round table.
They have lots of TVs great for watching football on Sunday and you can not beat their killer prices.
We are always pleasantly surprised when we get our bill. Yippee.....Arrgh Hail to Chico Club

It's the best Pirate Bar in all the land.
My friend and I were getting a lil' thirsty after a day of… Read more »
Ive been meaning to try this place out again but I just can't get over last time.
Drunk fugly cougar dancing her heart out and falling flat on here face. Only to get back up and do it again. Yeah she "got low" and did her little "I used to strip at centerfolds before I started collecting social securty" dance for a couple goofy guys in the corner. Whatever old timer brought her in didn't mind. Actually I didn't really mind either; gave me something to take my mind of the terrible music.
The DJ was playing music so F* loud that I couldn't really hold a conversation. Normally I wouldn't mind but the setting of this bar seems to chill for club volumes. The music was really random so I'm assuming the DJ is related to the owner, is the owner? I'm sure he has talent but this is the WRONG venue...
The prices are reasonable and there is a cool pirate at the door. + 1 star for the pirate and empty pool table.
Maybe the two nights I went were off nights. This place definitely has potential. Make your own opinion, Chico's is close so I'm hoping I'll be back with a positive review one of these days.
Since I do happen to live rather close... I frequent the Chico Club pretty often... The big ass beers used to be $2.50 now they have been raised to $3.25... BOO on the recession- BUT still reasonably priced. The bartender, Maria can usually be seen there on Thursdays- she's cool, friendly, and nice to look at :)
The owner, Mike is super chill and usually serves Nachos with the football games- HECK YEA- like last night when I happened to swing by and watch the Pre-Season game of Eagles vs. Colts...
Anywho... A fun and relaxed atmosphere with 2 pool tables, darts, popcorn! and video games that you wouldn't see anywhere else... Come and have a beer or cocktail NOW. :)
This place is what it is and doesn't try to be something it is not.
What it is...very old school La Mesa watering hole with an eclectic mix of white/blue and retired-collared folks, plus the occasional SDSU kids drinking beer, watching sports and playing pool/darts/strip video poker. Live music that is varied and often surprisingly good. Karaoke, which is often surprisingly bad (which is the point).
There is almost always free grub (wings, etc.) and during football season Mike's mom makes special dishes for the faithful fans. 10am away games are awesome with some spicy chorizo but night games are well-coordinated with carne asada!
What it is not...a bar in the Gaslamp. No glitter, glam or ropes. It is also the only place in the vicinity of 5500-7500 El Cajon Blvd. where I feel safe drinking and don't worry about less-savory patrons.
If you are one of those people who only opens tabs at bars and never brings cash, this is not the bar for you. Unless you want to be forced to drink more and/or give away shots when you're already hammerblasted.
There is a $10.00 minimum for all ATM/credit card transactions at the Chico Club. No big deal, right? You'll spend that in an hour. WRONG. See how long it takes you to spend ten bucks here, I dare ya!
The beers are gigantic, and cheap. When you go to close out your tab, the bartender will probably say something like, "You're at 8 bucks buddy, what else can I get you?"
I don't know, maybe I'm just a lightweight, but my suggestion to the non raging drunks (if any of you are out there) is to bring some cash. If you have some left over, brush up yer shootin' skills on Big Buck Hunter.
Ahhhh, how I love a good Pirate bar. Grab a Big ass beer for 2.50 and toil away at golden tee or one of the pool tables or just communicate with the la mesa locals who have opinions on everything under the sun.
Maybe I haven't been to many dive bars but I don't recall many who offer $1 jello shots at 1 in the afternoon. The bartenders are always super friendly and they pour a stiff drink.
a regular told me that back in the day (its been there since 1940) it was known throughout San Diego as the hustlers pool hall. He said the best of the best used to hustle there. i always like drinkin' in a spot that has history, no matter how useful that or entertaining that history may be.
Oh, they have had free munchies there the couple of times I have went.
Pirate Bars Rule!!!
OK, I have a few biases towards this place. One of my girlfriends works here. And two, it's a frickin' pirate bar!!!
Double WHHHHHHHHHHHaamiee!!
I'm still buzzed from being there today. I got off work and thought why not watch the San Diego Chargers whoop some ass?! Well the Chargers tried but the Chico Club delivered! The Chargers may be out of the super bowl this year, the Chico will be scoring you touchdowns year round. With Ms. Mercedes and Ms. Valerie behind the bar, you can't go wrong.
Everyone feels like a regular. Mike's mom even makes charger gear for raffles (how cool is that?).The bathroom is super clean. They have free food for the games and tons of big screens to watch the game from.
They get a solid four stars from me.
I just regret that I didn't take a picture with the pirate!!
Okay, I'm not into going to bars and drinking...heavily. But when I'm in the mood, I go to the Chico Club.
The place is comfortable, old school and the drinks are good. The bartenders are all very sweet and friendly too. Great food, great music. Just an all around fun place. It's one of the oldest bars in San Diego, and does have a history pertaining the Chico Marx. And the owner, Mike is a pretty cool guy too.
Pool Tournaments, Dart Tournaments, Karaoke 1st and 3rd Wednesdays, Chill DJ's on the weekends.
Great Prices!
Awesome atmosphere!
Good place to just chill. Definately no "downtown" dress code.
Chico's is a good bar to check out when you aren't fooling around and just want to get shit faced in La Mesa. I like the somewhat cheesy island pirate theme and the Big Buck Hunter game is great when you are tipsy. It's always fun to cap innocent animals in the face over a beer or vodka tonic.
There are certainly some characters at this place. I occasionally hit Chico's up with coworkers after working graveyards at my job and you see some pretty down and out old drunks here- dudes with the morning shakes who mellow out the more they drink. Yeah, this is THAT kind of place. I think some of the regulars from Pete's Place head here when they are slumming it up...
I still really like this bar for all it's seedy charm, and will always grab a drink here given the chance. The barmaids are always super cool too and I always get a good poor. Cheap booze, cheap old drunks, video games and pool = solid 3 stars.
Time 3:35pm on a Wednesday afternoon in August.
Scott: You guys wanna go shoot some pool at the Chico Club?
Adam: Ross?
Ryan: I'm down
Scott: Sweet.
Ryan: Driver? NOT IT!!!
Scott: I'll drive.
We get to the Chico club and nothing has changed. The bar is lined with blue-collar workers sporting company t-shirts or shirts they bought on boats, while fishing. I purposely don't wear my fishing shirts to avoid unwanted conversation. We enter the bar and my buddy Scott offers to buy the first round.
Scott: What are you guys having?
Ryan: I will have what you're having.
Adam: I think I'll start with a sex on the beach. (Adam walks over to the pool table in the back)
Bartender: What can I get for you guys?
Scott: Two pirate tattoos and a sex on the beach for my faggot friend playing pool over there.
If you ever feel like you might have a problem with alcohol, visit the Chico Club at 6am.
Chico Club happens to be where Santa spends the other 364 days of the year. I know... I've seen him there. You will like Chico club if you like pirates and/or alcohol. I fortunately like both. There is a strange mix of old drunks and young blue-collar folks on the weekends. The weeknights and afternoons are mostly low key. I wouldn't recommend picking someone up at this bar unless you want an illegitimate child or a VD.
A new owner has taken over this Caribbean pirate themed bar and his name is Mike. He's the coolest duderino ever. He hooked up my party of SIXTEEN with free shots!....

ok ok ok, enough is enough. this place rocks!
It's a crazy drunken pirate's life for most chico club goers.
This is a shitty little hole-in-the-wall dive where you decide to stop in and drink for one of three reasons.
1. You know a bartender and they'll get you hammered for about $10.
2. You want to giggle at old drunks who have been there since 6 am.
3. You decide you could use a beer to wash down that taco shop you just had from down the street.
It's fun. It's shady. It's a pirate-themed boozing hole.
Stop #3 of 5 on a bus bar tour last night. Never actually got a drink here, but there were no surprises on the inside. Dive-y. Of note was the door man, who was not only very welcoming to our busload of degenerates, but handled an intoxicated patron (luckily, not with our tour) with tact and respect. So often, door staff overreact and escalate situations, but this guy was cool as a cucumber. Props on the door staff. Next time, I may actually get a drink.
i only remember seeing a go-go-girl dressed for on broadway dancing on a crate near the pool table.
classy!
ps. the mayor of la mesa, art madrid, was last seen here. booyah chico!
