Review from L T.
Bethesda, MD
Three of us just tried the 1/4 dark platters with sides (coleslaw, potato salad, yuca, plantains, and fries). I think this must be the best rotisserie chicken around. Everything was delicious -- more than we could eat -- all for less than a meal at McDonald's ($5.99/platter)!
As someone mentioned - watch out for the green sauce -- seriously hot! -
Review from Maya B.
So I was pretty hyped when I first ate at Don Pollo (just a few blocks away from Chicken on the Run), and to its credit, I would still say it's pretty damn good. However, Chicken on the Run blows Don Pollo out of the water (and would definitely stomp Don Pollo in street fight!).
Reasons to go to Chicken on the Run:
1) Juicy, flavorful chicken with subtle herbs
2) Crispy (non-greasy) yuca
3) Sweet platanos sliced thin
4) Rice and beans that don't taste like they came from a can (even if they might have)
5) Cole slaw with the right balance of veg, creaminess, and a touch of sweet
6) Delicious chimichurri-type sauce with a kick (great on everything!)
7) Thick and creamy pink mayo-type sauce (heaven with the platanos)
8) Great (and loud--you can hear it in the parking lot) music!
Downsides:
1) No alfajores--a bummer, but let's be honest, alfajores aren't Peruvian anyways, they are Argentinian
2) The place is pretty small, so it's not great for a crowd and is much better for take-out -
Review from Daniela K.
Washington, DC
Nothing gets me and my work buddies going like a whole rotisserie chicken for 4 on the menu at lunchtime.
The skin is crispy, the meat is moist, and the music puts you in the frame of mind of a latin american dinette. The price is perfect, and doesn't get much better than this.
If you're going single, I recommend the 1/4 dark for the best flavors which comes with two sides (I love the rice and black beans with fried plantains). -
Review from Ruth C.
Tucked into a small strip with a tiny lot and some seating inside. Efficient service at the register by a girl who couldn't help but dance to the top 40s playing in the background. The Chop Chop ($6.50) was a super filling salad that lasted me two meals, I would definitely get this again. Saucy amount of pulled chicken mixed in with decent white rice and black beans. The small side of yucca ($1.99) was actually a pretty generous portion compared to other places I've been to, and chopped into chunky nuggets for quick and even cooking. Both green and yellow sauces were acceptably tasty, but the salad dressing was a bit of a turn-off.

Bethesda, MD
It's good Peruvian (I think) style rotisserie chicken. The chicken's good, but I really look forward to the sides. I love cole slaw and yucca; if this place would sell halfway decent biscuits, I'd probably swear off KFC and Popeyes. Also, the dipping sauces are pretty good, especially the green chile one. As is, I usually figure out another way to have biscuits on the table.

Quality chicken, fast service, great sides, all for a great price! What more could you ask for?

Review from Deidre D.
Bethesda, MD
There are plenty of places in the DC area that serve up this tasty chicken plate, but few do it better than Chicken on the Run. The tiny shop is tucked next to a parking deck on St. Elmo Avenue and holds only a handful of a seats for diners. Most of the space is taken up by the large rotisserie ovens and counters where the whole chickens are cut up to order. It's dimly lit and filled with the smell of spices, vinegar, and plantains crisping in the fryer.
Dark and light meat are both tender and juicy and the chicken skin is crisp and flavorful. The combos generally come with 2 sides and a container each of a spicy mayo and a green salsa for dipping. The fried plantains, yuca, and rice beans are the best offerings by far and make building a delicious, inexpensive lunch or dinner a breeze.
chickens, white or dark meat, with two sides run from $6-$7, while a 1/2 chicken combo comes to $9. The ever-popular Chop Chop (rice, beans, and shredded chicken with a side salad) will only set you back about $7. In downtown Bethesda, finding a more filling and delicious meal for under $10 is going to be tough. The menu is minimal but when the centerpiece is the perfectly-cooked chicken, the selection is just perfect as it is. -

Excellent Peruvian chicken! My favorite for a quick lunch or dinner in the Bethesda area. Love the chicken and the chow-chow...sauces add some spiciness without overshadowing the delicious chicken.
Drive by too quickly and you'lll miss it! -
Review from Cindy C.
Bethesda, MD
I'd probably say more like 4.5 stars.
What everyone says is what I've found to be true. Chicken is tender and tasty. Sides were even better than expected. The coleslaw is excellent. Very crunchy. Platanos were good. Rice & beans nice and moist. I prefer it like this, rather than dry. Yuca is fried extremely crispy. I actually prefer soft yuca but if you like it crispy and crunchy more (like my bf) you'll def like this. Overall, just great. Not much to complain about here.
I noticed most ppl just carry out as the place is small, small, small. -
Review from Sahar R.
By Bethesda standards, this place would be considered a "hole in the wall". Located in the section of Bethesda (St. Elmo) where there's a bunch of small ecletic shops (like a french video store), heretofore referred to as "Old Town Bethesda" by me to enhance the city's character. This place is easy to miss.
So if you read over the prior reviews, you may notice that people describe the white sauce given with each meal as a "cream sauce" or "mayo" or just "white sauce". You guys have no idea what it is right? If I wasn't in polite company I would offer some ideas on what it is, but it's amazing how many people will eat white stuff in a cup that's offered to them without knowing what it is. It's described on the menu as " salsa, mild or picante", and the green sauce falls under that definition too.
Rest assured, it's mayo mixed with jalapeno (I had to ask) and absolutely a great dipping sauce for the fried plaintains, which are excellent here. I love the sweet and spicy combo, but I might be weird in that way cause I put mangos in a plastic baggie with Sriracha sauce and eat them all day.
The chicken itself had a great rub on it. Peppery and spicy, I found my 1/4 white meat to be flavorful and juicy. The plaintains stole the show and the yuca was ok. They do have a wide variety of sides (beans, rice, salad, mashed potatos). The best part: I got a Jarridos and dinner for under $7, that's cheaper than 2 hours of parking in this meter friendly town.
You're a wonderful addition to Old Town Bethesda, Chicken on the Run place. -
Review from Brian Y.
Los Angeles, CA
A solid 3.25
The 1/4 dark chicken here is not that bad. It was well prepared and the skin is cooked just right. It was flavorful, but I don't think it is as good as Sabroso Grill which is packed with even more juicy flavor.
The yucca here is surprisingly really really good. Even better than Sabroso Grill. It must be in the oil they are using cause usually with yucca the smaller pieces are fried to the consistency of charcoal. They got their yucca frying down to a science. Every piece is constantly well done. Next time I stop by for lunch I will just get 2 orders of yucca with my 1/4 chicken or just yucca by itself.
This place goes down in my book as the place for really good yucca, but not the best chicken in the area. -
Review from Cy K.
Good Peruvian chicken ad a low price. If you're not in the mood to cook for a while you can buy a chicken and some sides here once in a while and keep yourself fed for days. Its really not much of a place to sit and eat - most of the clientele is takeout (bachelor chow).

This place is amazing, within our office of 5 people, I would say there are at least 2 of us ordering from here 3 times a week! And living close, I come on the weekends too :) The chicken is cooked perfectly and the sauces are delicious! I just got a rotisserie for home....but I don't think anything I make will come close!

Review from Kojak N.
Washington, DC
This is the way Peruvian chicken is supposed to taste. Seasoned to perfection, chicken cooked on an open flame, outside of the chicken crispy, inside tender and juicy. I used to think there was no Peruvian chicken place in the DC area better than El Pollo Rico, but this place is just as good, if not better. And their beans and rice is awesome. It has a hint of citrus in it or something. Yucca was out of this world. Green sauce was spicy but not so spicy that your taste buds would have been killed. The creamy orange sauce was perfect.
The restaurant is very small and has like 5-6 tables, but I went at 9:15 at night on a Friday, so I had no trouble finding a place to sit. I was able to sit and take my time chowing down.
This place is hole in the wall by Bethesda standards but I didn't care on this particular night. All that mattered was the chicken and I didn't leave disappointed. -

Call me loco, but I'd trade my mother for a plate of the chop-chop pollo.
The green sauce and the cream sauce are too legit to quit.
Also, you can't find a better bang for your buck in Bethesda. -
Review from Lissa B.
Washington, DC
This is the newest of my favorite restaurants in Bethesda and I'm so excited to have found it! I first tried it when it was the top rated on Yelp in Bethesda and with that price, clearly I had to check it out! I was very pleasantly surprised.
The concept is so simple yet the food is so good, and the price is even better. I always feel like it is more of a home cooked type of meal and it feels cozy in the restaurant even though it's pretty normal and nothing too special in the atmosphere.
There are so many sides to choose from and they are all great. My favorites are the plantains and mashed potatoes. The portions are huge and you certainly wont leave hungry. -
Review from Tori M.
Washington, DC
I'm going to give this place a solid three stars. I found Chicken on the Run on Yelp and I wasn't disappointed with the serving size or the taste of the 1/4 dark meat chicken. It's in an awkward location if you're coming from the Metro and I wouldn't have found it with out Google Maps on my iPhone.
Other Yelpers mentioned they have two sauces. I got three difference sauces: green, yellow, and orange. Maybe one was salad dressing? (I'm not a connoisseur of dressings.) I usually don't eat food with condiments (except salt!) and this chicken was no exception. I tried all three sauces and IMHO it didn't even need any.
If I'm in Bethesda again I'd go back for sure. Solid three stars. -

Great food!
Great portions!
Great value for Bethesda!
Great spicy green sauce!
Much better than "Chicken Casket". -

Washington, DC
Delicious Peruvian chicken, great spice rub on the skin. Unlike many other a la brasa chicken spots, they make awesome sides. The rice and beans, plantains and mashed potatoes were all great. The decor and the oven (in particular) reminded me of the place I ate at all the time in Cusco.
However, I think it is a tiny bit overpriced and the chickens could be meatier. El Pollo Sabroso in Mt. Pleasant is definitely better but this comes close. -

This place is amazing. The chicken is delicious, and the soccer on TV assures you that it's authentic.

Yes this place is like the other "peruvian" chicken places out there but this place is special. They have plenty of sides to choose from. The seasoning on the chicken just hits the spot.
Cant go wrong here with the price. -

Delicious Peruvian chicken that comes with sides, tortillas, and both red and green sauce! It's a great deal, and it tastes very good. This is a great place for your everyday takeout.

Review from Chris D.
Washington, DC
Chicken on the run is such good value.
Here's the run down for a perfect experience:
Order the quarter chicken - white meat, sides of mashed potatoes and plantains. Done and done. (You may be tempted to get a half chicken but it really is not necessary - I'm a grownass man and I am full after a quarter and two sides).
The plantains are crazy good. The chicken is, in a word, succulent (seriously that's the only way to describe it - its brimming with juices and flavor). The mashed potatoes are heavenly good with plenty of butter but not too heavy.
I wish there were a Peruvian chicken place this good closer to me in DC, but I'll gladly drive to Chicken on the Run (or Don Pollo - let's be honest, they're the same thing) to fulfill my Peruvian chicken desires.
It's so cheap and good. -

I love the chicken here especially when paired with the green sauce (I always ask for extra)!
The sides are delicious as well, especially the fried plantains! This place hits the spot whenever I'm in the mood for rotisserie chicken! -

Good chicken, good chicken, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when Su comes for you? Oh, Mr. Chicken...you can run but you can't hide. I always get my bird!
Not to be confused w/ chicken that gives you the runs, Chicken on the Run (COTR) serves up one delicious bird. Like Ina K., I'm so over the original El Pollo Rico - they "re-opened," I feel like Angelina Jolie in Changeling. I haven't seen the movie, but I have seen the previews, which means I pretty much watched the movie, right? Anywho, my child (EPR) was kidnapped and they try to give me what they say is my son, but I know my own son, and you, senor, are no El Pollo Rico. Back to COTR. I reserved the final 0.5 stars for Sabroso Grill (SG) for after trying this place, and here's the tale of the tape:
Price: SG +1 ($4.71 & $6.60 vs. $5.50 & $7.99, for the 1/4 & 1/2, respectively)
Skin: COTR +1 COTR is full flavor; Sabroso is more subtle. Full flavor = equals delicious but also results in nizasty burps. COTR is probably the best skin next to Super Pollo - a side-by-side test taste will have to be carried out by an independent 3rd party to determine the superior chicken dermis.
Flesh: SG +1. White meat at COTR was amazing - but the dark meat was dry. What's going on in the world today? These young chickens Mr. Perdue is raising, they're just not the same anymore.
Sauces: COTR +1. If you believe in a divine being, the green sauce here is milked directly from said divine being's bosom, i.e., nectar of whatever god(s) you believe in. Hence forth, please call this sauce the green nectar god sauce. Also, neither place nickles and dimes you for extra.
Sides: SG +1 (barely) COTR's no punk - the yuccrack is amazing, cole slaw is fresh and delicious, and other sides aren't 1/2 bad either. But the yuccrack at SG is amazing and they have a secret weapon wrapped in a flaky crust: saltena.
Drinks: SG +1. like Bobby Boucher, I prefer high quality H2O when dining on Peruvian chicken. SG has a fountain w/ free water; COTR requires you to pay for a bottle. And $1.96 for Honest Tea? Is that a tad high?
Interior: SG +1 central a/c is a must when devouring lots of green nectar god sauce. COTR has hole-in-the-wall charm, but I like A/C. SG also has more seating.
Parking: Tie. SG = crappy parking in DT SS. COTR is teeny, tiny lot in front plus battling yuppies for street parking.
Service: Tie. SG is more formal. I like. COTR makes me feel like I'm at a Peruvian chicken joint. There's something about "medio pollo" that makes my eyes well with emotion a little, just before they CHOP the chicken.
So if great chicken skin and green nectar god sauce tickle your fancy, and you can excuse the occasional hit-or-miss dark meat , COTR is your best bet. For an overall tastier experience, I think Sabroso wins!
Note: you may have a hard time finding both SG and COTR chickens as they are now on the run from me. And remember, I always get my bird.
P.S. A lil something something to consider when figuring out how much to order: the Yelp DC Tapeworm scale
If you...
...do not have a tapeworm, you are
Average American Joe M. & can fill up at COTR for ($5.50: 1/4 chicken + 2 regular sides)
...may habor one or two tapeworms, you are
PC W. & can fill up at COTR for $19.99 (Fiesta for four: whole chicken + 4 large sides)
...may harbor a tapeworm and it's immediate and extended families, you are
Lester K. & can fill up at COTR for $39.99 (Fiesta for eight: 2 whole chickens + 8 large sides), and should probably drive to Sabroso Grill immediately.
So see where you lie on the above tapeworm scale, and choose your meal accordingly.Listed in: Why did the chicken cross the…, Su's ROTDs

I'm giving COTR a slight edge over EPR because they have a way better choice of sides, the chicken tastes just as good if not better, and it hasn't burned down.
I'm reserving my fifth star for juicier dark meat the next time I go. Otherwise, high marks on both the value and tastiness scales! Chicken, stay right where you are! -
Review from Stephen W.
Bethesda, MD
Quarter chicken (that must have been a part of a really BIG chicken) with succulent white meat.
Plantanes with the perfect crisp on the outside, and just right in the middle.
Delectable rice and brown (that's the technical term) beans.
For less than $10 bucks. You should hopefully be walking to Chicken on the Run, or hell, running, while you read the rest of this review.
The service here is always extremely friendly greeting you with a smile. You just place your order - quarter or half a chicken, white or dark (haven't had the dark yet), and pick 2 sides. The plantanes and rice and beans are my favorite, although they also have Yuca, potato salad and others. Your order will probably be ready by the time you've walked 5 feet from the register to the end of the counter.
Make sure you get some of the chipotle mayo and green sauce. The mayo is very tasty on the chicken, as is the green sauce, which has great flavor, and you think it's going to burn your mouth, but then the heat goes away. I love it. You will too. -
Review from Paul M.
This has been our go to Chicken place for family meals when we cannot be bothered cooking. Takeout and go is the better option as the seating it limited.
Dinner for five for $20? Fantastic. The chicken is absolutely splendid and there is a wide wide choice of sides.
Of the three or four pollo a la brasa options in Bethesda this one id the absolute best - definitely in the same league food wise as El Sabroso Grill in Silver Spring - but El Sabroso is a far far better place to coem to if you want to sit down and eat. -

Many reviews, so let's have fun
When describing, Chicken on the Run
Green sauce - refreshing, scoop 'til there's none
Portions are ample - elation
Peruvian roasted, sapid bite
Quarter white meat - OMG, so right
Moist inside, I'm as high as a kite
Mouth's having a party - blissful delight
Current "crack": Yuka - new discovery
Inside is tender, yet outside's crispy
Doesn't need added flavor, leave it be
Will purchase this solo, definitely
Fried plantains - like all sides, generous
Tangy-sweet, nicely fried, appeases us
Potato salad - meh bland, not much fuss
Coleslaw's fresh not drowning - minus nor plus
Back to the green sauce - worth mentioning twice
Jalapeno? Pepper? Lively - entice
Overall, if you want my advice
Their food - good eats, for the portion and price

It's good - and I'd definitely go back (which is really rare for me). But it's not as good as Sabroso in Silver Spring.
Though more generous with their servings and having very different seasonings, I think it's about on the same level as El Pollo Rico in Arlington. The packaged meals (or fiestas) for 4, 6, or 8 people are amazing deals for the amount of food you get. I seriously don't think I'll ever cook dinner again with this place so close by. -

2.75 stars
A couple nights ago I was in the area and hunted down something that I had tried before. Being that I wanted takeout, Chicken on the Run sounded perfect. I got the 1/2 chicken with rice and beans and coleslaw. the chicken was huge and would provide nice leftovers.
When i got home the chicken was still hot, but I wonder if it would have been better to eat it in the restaurant. Regardless, i was not impressed. The flavor of the skin and the chicken was good, but in all honesty, it was nothing special. It wasn't that crisp at all, but hey, the coleslaw was good.
I will probably give this place one more try, eating the chicken in the restaurant, but with all the other chicken spots in Columbia Heights, Silver Spring and VA, why bother. -
Review from Mariko F.
Good place for lunch. I got a craving for greasy, unhealthy stuff and decided that it would be a perfect time to try out Chicken on the Run.
This small joint is very easy to overlook. The inside is just as small as the outside. They only have 5 or 6 tables to sit down at. But the chicken is really good. Granted, it's greasy and fatty, but that means that the chicken dissolves on your tongue.
I had the yuca and the salad as my sides. The yuca tastes like breadfruit, for those of you who know what that is. Let's say it's a cross between a potato and stale bread. I know that that doesn't sound that great, but it's actually very good. The stale bread is more the texture than the taste.
The salad was very normal. Lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers. I was actually happy that I got that because the rest of my plate was very greasy and fried. The green gave the illusion of balance.
A very good part were the salsas that you get. The picante salsa is very hot. It was very good. The mild salsa is almost like a yogurt sauce. It's almost sweet and goes very well with the yuca.
All in all, two thumbs up. I will come back here next time I am in the mood for grease.Listed in: Best of Bethesda

I'm writing this in the midst of a food coma... for a miserly $5.83 price tag nonetheless!
One generous quarter of dark meat, rice & beans, and a HUGE serving of fried plantains. Toss in two nondescript, yet acceptable sauces for good measure and a Jarritos tamarindo. Why did I even try to eat you all?
Best I've ever had? Probably not. But when the mix of salty, herby chicken meets sweet fried banana, ask me if I care? At that moment it is the only one that matters.Listed in: Katrina M. Goes To Washington

This is going to sound so bizarre, but I'm a vegetarian and I still love this place. I go for two things: 1. The coleslaw, because it's fresh and delicious. None of that American style crap which has more mayo than cabbage. 2. The mild "salsa" sauce they sell in the mini fridge. Made "in house" for $2.50 a bottle? Awesome. I put it on everything.
1 star off for the plantains. Not so good. -
Review from Jerry L.
Berkeley, CA
Very simple: $5.83 for a delicious 1/4 chicken (dark meat) and two generous helpings of your choice of sides ranging from above-average rice & beans to tasty fried plantains to to corn on the cob (outstanding when drizzled with a mixture of the creamy mild and green spicy sauce they provide).
Throw in:
*A wide array of beverage choices (Honest Teas and Coke products alongside Jarritos and Inca Cola)
*A staff that is generally friendly and amiable (although as Bingo E. points out, the new cash register lady needs an attitude adjustment)
*Extremely efficient service - usually in and out at lunch time in 2-5 minutes for takeout even with a small line
*Free (albeit, usually crowded) parking, a rarity in Bethesda
And you have a winner.
I'll let the foodies debate over the merits of this chicken vs. the likes of El Pollo Rico and El Sabroso, I just know this stuff is very tasty. Even with the myriad of other dining options, you'd be hard pressed to find many better or cheaper spots for a quick lunch (or dinner for that matter) in Bethesda.Listed in: Insider's Guide To Bethesda

VERY solid rotisseria. Their blend of spices is delectable, they get the skin nice and crispy, and their sides are very good. My only knock on Chicken on the Run is the price. They're about a dollar or two higher than they should be (depending on what you get). Also, their yuca isn't quite as crispy-on-the-outside/tender-on-the-inside as I like mine.
Oh, and I don't often disagree with my esteemed fellow Yelp-ers when it comes to what-to-try, but steer WAY clear of the "chop-chop". Sure, it's convenient, but for the same price you can get way more chicken by just ordering a quarter or a half dark. With the chop-chop, you miss out on the spices, the skin, and you get a ton of rice and beans, but not much meat. -
Review from Catherine H.
Oakland, CA
A terrific Peruvian chicken counter joint. The spices make Chicken on the Run stand out from average rotisserie places-- the skin is super tasty, and the meat is always moist. The sides are all decent, but the chicken's really where it's at.
Also... conveniently right next to Nail Designs! Pop in for a yummy, inexpensive lunch and then take your greasy chicken fingers next door for a nice manicure!
