I think the Sun-Times is a really good paper. Yes, sometimes I wonder about the front cover headline, but once you start paging though the paper you will see some good stories.
The Sun-Times seems to keep the local political officials on there toes.
The Sun-Times sports section is far better than the Trib.
I also like the format, because it is much easier to read.
The Sun-Times tells it like it is, and is NOT politically correct (especially compared to the Trib.), which is awesome.
Also, they have Roger Ebert, who is a living national treasure and one of the greatest writers alive. He called out Vincent Gallo, made the man his bitch using nothing more than words, and then made amends with the man. A class act all the way.
I'm a longtime reader of the CST's!
Love the magazine style format!
The newspaper business has been in turmoil for many years.
I'm a business owner and been in Corporate America in a leadership role for many years.
This is a classic case of taking folks who are great news persons and promoting them into a leadership and management roles that make critical decisions on the strategic direction of the company!
Big Mistake!
The format changes are terrible, the content changes less than appealing, the business section is as bad as it's ever been.
I've attempted to advertise in the paper and found the experience one of the worst I've ever had with a vendor. Customer service is unheard of, pricing is so out of line with comparable forms of advertising.
One continuous mistake after another WOW! Fasinating!
Sometimes I think the Sun-Times is on an anti-Latino crusade. They were consistently and rabidly abusive to Elvira Arellano, and constantly pit Black writers against Latino immigrant subject matters, and their letters page broadcasts a lot of racial hatred, mostly from white readers.
This is also a paper that likes to pretend it gives a South Side and/or Black voice, but I see op-ed after columnist giving views that I don't hear from those sectors. And some of those pieces read almost like classic attempts to cause divisions between Blacks and Latinos, or within the Black community.
So sad is the slow demise of this paper. I think that I have seen Chinese restaurant menus that are bigger than this paper now. If you are taking the train into work, read it then and if by chance you find something that interests you, go ahead and check it out on the Internet when you get to work.
The paper is reading more and more like a tabloid magazine all of the time. You will get all of your scandal updates and celebrity news in full detail. If you are looking for a bit more depth and detailed reporting than another publication should be in order.
On a brighter note, they still do a very good job of Sox and Bears coverage.
God bless the Sun-Times. It has news I care about. How come the Tribune didn't report on the fire put out by a woman's "XL undies," the cops who "went ape trying to find diapered monkey," the man who "did dental work in dirty garage," the man who was mugged while proposing, the robber who stopped to lick his victim's toes, Illinois' worst toll cheats, the skunk with its head stuck in a salad dressing bottle, the "naked truth" about the man who stripped a burglar nude, the couple who performed surgery in their "filthy home," the kidnappers who tortured their victim with burns from fresh baked cookies, the minister who stole the wedding rings, or the 3+ page feature on the city's worst parking ticket scofflaws?
Every time I get a free issue of the Tribune, or momentarily lose my senses and buy a copy, I regret it immediately. It's boring and unwieldy--half a pound of dull news and egghead columnists. Give me Robert Feder and Ask Ellie!
I have to deduct one star for Dining with Pat Bruno, though. This guy's palate and writing style seem to be stuck in 1985. Enough with the fancy Italian places! Stick with the Reader for restaurant reviews.
This paper may outsell the Trib. ,but is second in it's journalism. I prefer the format of this paper however. I like the Fri. pullout section called Weekend Plus the best.
My favorite columnist for the Times is Richard Roeper.
I appreciate the Sun-Times 'cause they know what's interesting, namely shock and scandal, and put it right there on the front page. No acting all non-chalant with some boring foreign policy story on the front page like the Trib.
As my dad observed, "I like the Sun-Times because it's more of a working-class paper." I concur.
Now if they'd just get a better comics section, I'd subscribe!
Honestly, I like the tabloid format of this paper. It's easier to read on the train or whatever. But the stuff they tend to report on is shit. For real, articles about Brad and Jen breaking up onthe front page? What are you--Fox news?
They moved into new offices located in the Apparel Center (Merchandise Mart). A beautiful facility. What I love about the Sun Times is that they had the good sense to hire some outstanding people like Richard Roeper, Roger Ebert and Robert Feder. I have loved Richard in particular for many years. I am impressed by his intelligence, excellent writing, wit and charm. (By the way, pick up his recent book, Schlock Value. It's so funny and a "must have" for all movie fans). Roger is the best at what he does, a wonderful man (and world famous) and Robert Feder is the one I turn to and trust for the inside scoop on radio.
THe Tribune is definitely a better paper with more detailed information but I love the Sun Times based on their horoscopes! For some reason, my horoscope always fits in perfectly....
The content of the Sun Times tends to be lighter/fluffier than the Tribune, but I appreciate it's easier-to-handle tabloid format. Really, both the Sun-Times and Trib are lightweights compared to a paper like the New York Times, but I tend to like the Sun-Times' coverage of local news stories, and I personally prefer to be well-informed about what's going on in my backyard rather than buying a paper just for its snob-appeal. The Friday edition is a must-read for me as it includes the Weekend section with Roger Ebert movie reviews. The only day where I much prefer the Trib is the Sunday edition.
If the tribune had a suntimes format, no would read them. Sun times is much easier to read and has a better down to earth tone to it. Tribune is more on the edumacated side. Ill switch daily between the sun times and red eye for my news reading.
I would read the Sun Times if they were out of the Tribune and Red Eye. I don't like the way it is formatted and it reminds me of a paper I worked for in Minneapolis which is not a standard news paper. I can't really pull the sections I want to read out of the Sun Times, which is annoying. However, the reporters I work with there are excellent and they get all the stars as they are worth it!
An okay newspaper. I would definitely prefer the Tribune over the Sun Times any day. But this paper does provide some good coverage of local happenings and local business advertisements.
Okay, if you want real news, don't buy this paper. Get the trib. BUT, if you're into US weekly as much as I am, this is your paper. I would much rather read about Brangelina than some financial firm going bankrupt. Come on people, I have priorities.
My favorite thing about the Sun-Times is the format and layout of the paper. In a city where a decent amount of people take public transportation, it's a more ideal format. Now, format aside, it's a terrible paper. I grew up in Indianapolis, and would frequent Chicago and read the Sun-Times because that's the paper my aunt and uncle subscribed to (and still do) so I got used to it. But now that I live here (and was here when they most recently changed the look) and I read it almost on a daily basis, I have grown very disgusted with it. Especially the front pages. I completely agree with another reviewer in the the Sun-Times looks more like a tabloid rag than it does a well-respected Chicago newspaper. The Chicago Tribune (although not in the more convenient reading format) excels where the Sun-Times leaves off (cover page) and is more fact-written than it is opinion-slanted based on the writer. Every writer should have their own style, but in a news piece the news should be reported and not a two-bit opinion (that's what the opinion section is meant to demonstrate.) However, the Sun-Times is the number one paper in Chicago for a reason (although, the Chicago Tribune is the 6th most-read newspaper in the United States.)
this newspaper is getting thinner and thinner...what is going on?
