I have a 1993 325i with 257,000 miles -- it's tight and runs like a top. I do most the maintenance work but, lacking a proper garage and tools, I have long suffered at the hands of various service departments for bigger jobs.
Chicago Import Service is the epitome of what a car service center is suppose to be -- helpful, knowledgeable, collaborative, trustworthy and fair. I've used them now for an air conditioner recharge and a muffler change and received great service, quality advice all at a solid price. Alex and his colleagues are patient, personable and know their stuff. When I balked at paying BMW's parts prices for a new muffler, Alex worked with me to source an OEM alternative of the same quality at almost a third of the price. And, he graciously humored me when I asked him to put her up on the lift so we could do a once over on the state of the systems and parts underneath.
In a sector where people have grown accustomed to being ripped off and misled, it is so refreshing to come across an approach to car service that delivers an experience so different from the expected.
My check service engine went on in my 03 BMW m3 so immediately went to Yelp to find the best BMW service shop (I refuse to get ripped off at a dealership). Previously,I took my car into Midwest Performance after reading reviews but the service was just ok (they never got back to me after I left several messages), let alone when I had my Service II done there since thats originally what i thought i needed since my service engine light went on, the light went on as I drove away from the shop. So, I went back to yelp to go somewhere else to get it resolved. I tried CIS out for the first time and it turns out that Alex and his team is as good as all the reviews say.
Midwest Performance said I needed 2 huge parts which now make no sense since if I had that issue my car wouldnt be in driving condition.. so I took it to CIS and their diagnosis was completely different - which fixed the problem - a cam sensor issue, not an issue with the fuel pump relay and something else. Alex showed me the computer diagnosis, walked through what the issue was, showed me where it is and gave me a very reasonable quote. I'd recommend anyone with a BMW to go here to get their car serviced/fixed.
One other thing was that when i was picking up my car, I got into a conversation an elderly couple who was waiting for their car - they've been going to CIS for 5+ years and apparently the old man refuses to go anywhere else to get his car fixed. Says something about quality and service.
Florin and Chicago Import Service is a true Chicago gem! Seeing as I am a female who lacks all basic knowledge of cars, it's intimidating and nerve racking to find a service garage who a) won't take advantage of you and b) won't charge you an ridiculous amount of money for all they talked you into.
I experienced nothing short of honestly and professionalism with Florin at Chicago Imports. My 2006 Honda Civic had begun smoking and making a horrid screeching sound. After reading the Yelp reviews, I found Chicago Import and decided to have AAA tow my car there. After inspecting the car, Florin determined that my engine block was cracked and I needed a whole new engine!!! After I nearly fell over from shock, he explained to me that according to my owner's manual I was still covered by my Power Train warranty. He instructed me to immediately tow to a Honda Dealer. (To be honest, I would have never thought to look for that...after all, my 3 year/3K miles warranty was up!)
I've never been so thankful for such an honest and reliable service garage. The icing on whole experience is they didn't charge me a dime for their inspection and evaluation. I wish I could've had them service my car then. I assure you, they will be the first people I take my car to if I ever have problems again.
I picked up the car and towed it to the Fletcher- Jones Honda Dealership this morning. Some how I have a gut feeling that the service won't be as golden...
Note: I only got an estimate from these guys.
They seemed knowledgeable but did not do as thorough job
inspecting my VW Jetta as Accurate Imports or European American Motors did.

Alex and his crew are great! I can call at anytime and get advice on how to deal with an issue with my car or bring it in for a quick light bulb or oil change. If you have an import car that is not under warranty, you must give Chicago Import a try. Their prices are reasonable and they don't try to replace entire systems when one part is bad! If you have a BMW the dealers are nortorious for that...!!
Great staff, services, and prices!
Typically I do all my own work, so I am very picky about the independent shops that I take my BMW to.
I called CIS recently regarding a simple problem that two other shops were not able to remedy... primarily due to their incompetence. (Stay away from Midwest Performance.) I spoke with Alex who, after informing him of what needed to be done, told me that it would take about a half an hour of labor. Here was the clincher, he told me that if I brought the car in that afternoon he would take care of it then.
Not only did CIS finish the repair correctly, they did it on time and for only $50. (WOW! The BMW dealership was going to charge $310, and another shop quoted me between $150-200.)
I will use CIS again. They also let me thoroughly inspect the underside of the car while it was on the lift, which I really appreciated. I should also note that other customers came in while I was there, and they seemed very pleased as well.
Service: Courteous
Price: Excellent
Quality: This was a simple job, but they did it correctly which is something I can't say about many other shops.
Timeliness: Excellent
This is the definition of a highly capable indy shop. I took my 2003 BMW 330i here and they immediately solved the problem for a very reasonable rate. I'm a BMW enthusiast and know when I'm being fooled with and this is an incredibly fair and reasonable shop. My car had the SES (check engine light) on and I pulled the code. The mechanics at CIS knew exactly what the issue was and even had the part in stock (a thermometer). 2 hours later, my car was ready and running like new. Other shops quoted me ridiculous diagnostic charges and even made up work that they thought they'd have to do. Bill pointed out that the part is a self contained unit so you just swap it out - no need for other tests as the part only comes one way. Now that's knowledge!
Excellent service and honesty. Labor rates are average, but they charge you fairly.
This place is the best for any import car repair. I trust them more with my BMW than any dealership. Their pricing on parts and labor are reasonable and you never get any BS from them.
This place is great. I called because of the yelp reviews and explained what was wrong with my car. They told me that they could fix the broken flex pipe, but since they would have to order a part, it would be expensive. Instead, they recommended another shop, where the shop owner could just patch the part I already had. This saved me $500. I so appreciated their honesty and will definitely be going here in the future..
I've been going to see these guys for years and I'd trust them with my own kids. They fix what is needed, they do it on time and at a reasonable rate. Two weeks ago my wife's car was at the dealership for warranty work and they suggested new brakes for nearly a grand. I took it to Chicago Import Service and they said I have over 6 months of brakes left and when I do need brakes they said it should only be 60% of that price. These guys are reasonable and practical that's why I'll always go to them.
i'm new to the area, and my VW's driver window got stuck in the down position. i looked it up online and knew what the problem was, and set out to find someone to fix it. i called several of the mechanics recommended on yelp, but they either didn't work on european cars or told me to see a glass person (which is totally not the problem).
called CIS, and alex knew what the problem was straightaway. he was down a guy and couldn't work on it for a day, but let me bring it over so it could be locked up overnight since the window was still down. just picked it up, and although the bill was painful (aren't all car repairs?) it seemed totally reasonable, especially when i learned that some dealers were charging two or three times as much for this problem.
i've found a reliable and honest new mechanic for my volkswagen!
