I'm late in the game to the wonderful world of comic books... I think I'm about a year deep into my new vice. Though I usually shop at another location that's on my way home from school, I stopped in The Vault' because I was getting dinner with a friend in her new hood.
I was happy to see the shop while we were walking to the restaurant and I drug my friend in to see if I could pick up a few back issues of Red Robin. Well, all they had was issue three, but the store is pretty swanky. I love the lighting and the organization and even though it's small, it's the perfect local comic book store.
A guy who works there was out on the floor talking to a couple kids about the Blackest Night story and if my friend wasn't with me I would have eavesdropped a little longer to hear his opinions of it (I'm a fan, myself).
When I went to purchase the issue, the dude behind the counter was really nice! We talked about Red Robin and how we totally dug Chris Yost a whole bunch and we squealed about our love of Tim Drake (Tim Drake greater than Damien). And he even recommended a few comics that he thought I would enjoy (I do enjoy violent comics, thanks!).
I wish I lived closer to this store! This will have to be my seasonal comic book shop (when I can bike the 5 miles, without frostbite on exposed skin)!
Comic Vault is you're regular neighborhood comic shop. What sets it apart from all the other friendly neighborhood comic shops is the amount of events that this place has. Thus far, there have only been a handful of comic release parties but they have shown that they will continue to please customers with more hot dogs, poozer punch, and free raffles for the newest issue of Green Lantern, Captain America, or Batman. Not to mention the hospitality each worker gives to their customers.
the only downside to Comic Vault is it's lack of back issues. Usually when I'm browsing the comic, I try to find something new and then want to start the entire series from one to whatever. Although, their lack of back issues lead to a simply laid out and clean store unlike other comic shops in Chicago.

A solid neighborhood comic shop. I'm not close by enough to drop by often but I keep up with them on Facebook and they have semi-regular special events like a 3rd Anniversary Sale and fun gatherings that keep things interesting. They're small - my only complaint would be they should try to carry more back stock, since I like to dig through lots of comics when I can .
A little background information: my experience with comic books to this date has been seeing my dad's piles of old ones at my grandma's house (Daffy Duck, anyone?), the movie "The Watchmen", and a night spent reading "Pride of Baghdad" (which is truly amazing, even for an inexperienced comic book gal such as myself.)
This store is super nice. It's very clean, very organized, and the people working here could not be more friendly.
Case in point: I came in by myself one day, with a teensy little post-it note with the name of two specific trade paperbacks (look ma, I know some of the lingo!!!) I must've looked lost because the guy working that day was as sweet as pie to me. While they did not have the specific books for which I had come to the store, he did very enthusiastically pick out several substitutes that would fit the bill. We also had quite the rousing conversation about the Watchmen movie (hey, I knew one thing, I had to talk about it!)
I also was able to put my name down for the other books and he would call me when they came in. Sure enough, a week and a half later, he calls, lets me know that the books I wanted were in, and in fact, there were the next two volumes.
While I'm not an experienced comic book reader, I do know good customer service, and I appreciate people who are passionate about what they do.
Check it. Right at the corner of Montrose and Ashland.

This really is a great LCBS (local comic book shop). It's not real big, but it's organized and clean. They offer a discount if you become a member with a pull list (Pull list: you give them a list of every book you collect, and every month when the book comes out, they automatically pull the books and put them aside for you to buy whenever you come in). The bigger the pull list, the bigger the discount. They also bag and board every book in the store.
I used to go to another store (hint: it has several locations is the city and suburbs) but was only getting a 10% discount. I made the switch to this store, not only did i qualify for the 15% discount, but all my books are always bagged and boarded.
It might not be a great store if you're looking to buy back issues. They don't have tons of boxes for you to dig through, but they will try to order anything you need, and call you when they come in. Also, the TPB area is small, but again, they'll order it for you. Also, if you're not a member with a pull list, there's a good chance that if you go in a couple days after an issue comes out, they will be sold out.

Ah, my first review in a looong time!
I've been going here for the better part of this year after a friend brought me here, and it's become my favorite shop in the city. The biggest reason is the owner Matt, wants to make it a community. He offers discounts for the more issues you have on your current pull list, and Thursdays are "ladies night". You get 15% off just for being a lady, ladies.
Matt just had the big event celebrating two years, with a huge sale and comic industry artists showing up. Earlier this summer he hosted a customer appreciation BBQ. He organizes movie events, getting big groups together to see comic movie screenings like Dark Knight, or Iron Man. And once a month he tries to host an after-hours stand-up comedy show.
Matt Sardo has some big plans and great ideas for this place. The store isn't huge, like a Graham Crackers, or Chicago Comics. But you don't need all that when you've got a good community of people.

Absolutely love this store. Exactly a year ago I got bedridden for about two weeks and needed something to do. I had never ever been into comics before in my life but I knew this store was right near me. I was very hesitant until I went into the shop and talked with the owner.
Now, I am buying comics left and right solely from the Comic Vault. The reviewer who talked about how friendly it is hits the bullseye.
If you think comic books are for geeks or losers, test out the Comic Vault and the owner will find something to get you into it. He's very knowledgeable without being a snob about it. Great deals on membership too!

I saw the full page ad Comic Vault took out in the Red Eye for their 2 year anniversary bash they were having and thought this would be a good time to go check the place out. They have a really nice, clean store, and I especially like the ingenious racks they have along the wall for recent comics. Since it was a special day, most of the back issues were put away so I can't make a judgment on the selection, but I did enjoy myself and I will be back to check the place out on a normal day.

I'm not a regular comic book reader, so I can't compare this place to other shops. But I sometimes hear or read about something I'd like to checkout and I can go here and ask for it without feeling like an idiot. Always friendly and helpful and willing to order something if they don't have it.
i used to come here all the time when i lived down the street. matt the owner is a good guy, great prices on comics and carrys a good selection of your typical comic shop stuff. i miss going there so i might go back soon as i have some $$ to spend
The owner is a very nice guy and is always helpful. I wasn't very knowledgeable about comics to begin with, but Matt will take his time and explain what you need to know.
