I absolutely adore the Chicago Botanic Gardens. When living in Chicago, it was a wonderful escape and respite from the city.

When I had a baby, we would strap him in the stroller and it became a wonderful respite from the house.

Now that my kids are preschoolers, we still love coming here. During the summer, we come here to smell all the different roses, splash our hands in the fountain, walk along the wooden walkway along the water and spot the huge fish.

In the fall, we come here to see the leaves change color, walk up the hill with the waterfalls and look at the view from the top and, of course, go to the vegetable garden to see what they have grown and check out the HUGE pumpkin.

In the winter, we come for the special holiday train display. Actually, the train display is good any day but the holiday one is extra special. We come to enjoy the snowy walk and the enormous lights on the lawn.

In the spring, we take in all of the amazing tulips and walk up and down the paths. We search through the English garden and along the way, spot the different flowers blooming. Also, the array of fountains throughout the gardens are such a soothing experience.

When I have a moment to myself I go to the Japanese gardens -- my personal favorite. I also walk the prairie and the entire garden layout for exercise. Is there any place better for a power walk?

The Botanic Gardens is an amazing gem for the entire Chicagoland area and is a must for anyone who lives in the region as well as visitors.

My husband and I came here in August on our 3rd wedding anniversary.  We took the day off work and decided to do something different than the usual and boring going out to dinner.  I also thought it would be a nice backdrop to take some lame and cheesy pictures of the two of us.

Just as we were arriving, it began to pour rain and continued to do so for the next 3 hours.

The admission was free but it was like $20 for parking!  Just for me, psychologically, I would feel a lot better paying $20 admission with free parking.  I guess their way works well when you have a carload of people and can split the cost since the charge is per vehicle, not per person.  But still I get annoyed when I have to pay just to park my car somewhere.  Anyhoo.

The first thing we did was purchase tickets for the tram tour.  We figured that would be okay to do in the rain.  Wrong.  The water was blowing in on us from the sides and we couldn't hear a word the driver was saying.  So that stunk.

So while it was raining, we wandered around the little visitor's center and the gift shop about 20 times.  We also ate the slowest lunch possibly in their little cafe/restaurant.  I also toyed with the idea of purchasing a membership which the husband eventually talked me out of.

So when the rain finally stopped, we began to enjoy the grounds.  We took a lot of really nice pictures but my hair had frizzed so bad that I decided against getting any of them blown up and framed.  We'll have to go back on a non-rainy day.

I think I liked the English garden the best.  It reminded me of Alice in Wonderland.

There was also another one, the Circle garden maybe that had these really cool flowers that were very bright in color and the centers of them almost looked like little plastic stars.  I even came home and figured out what they were called and have since forgotten.  They were way cool looking though.

    We will definitely go back.

I came here with my gf to see Wonderland Express. Tickets were $10 each, BOGO if you use Discover.

Their trains were very neat, as were many of their building models. However, the entire exhibit only took about 20 min to walk through. They had some lights outside, but I was expecting a lot more.

They also had free hot chocolate if you complete some tasks with SCVNGR, which was pretty cool.

I came here with my bf to see Wonderland Express. I love Christmas lights, so this would've been a cathartic experience for me if it wasn't so cold (which wasn't the botanic garden's fault). The trees outside were beautifully lit although I kind of wish there were even more lights.

The exhibit inside was okay (my bf said that the bean looked like a butt, and I was disappointed that the Evanston representation didn't have NU as a landmark) although it was shorter than expected when you consider the price of admissions. Overall I had a good time, and I would definitely like to see this place again in the spring to see how beautiful it can be outside.

Acres of beauty for just $20. What a great deal!

The Chicago Botanic Garden was one of the highlights of our trip to the area. I can't say enough good things about it! The Japanese garden in particular was truly breathtaking. Make it a point to stop by if you're in town. Five stars.

How can you not like this place?!?! Beautiful. Period. This is by far the largest botanical garden I have ever seen. We didn't even see most of it, and I was thoroughly impressed. They have amazing plants and flowers (obviously?) and landscaping, incredible sculptures and art, and fabulous waterfalls and fountains. They have a whole map full of different gardens to visit. There are plenty of paths to walk on, benches to rest on, picnic areas, and educational buildings. We happened to be there during their harvest fest (or something of the sort), and we got to try all sorts of apples and apple related products. So good! They also have a few cafes to eat at and a tram that gives you a tour (costs some money) of the center.

The only downfall is you have to pay $20 to park, but you can walk or ride your bike in for free. I'm guessing this is how they make some money to keep the place up (besides donations and memberships). You can park  in a few places around the area and walk in, so no big deal. We are definitely going back!

Beautiful in all seasons.  How they get things to bloom in Chicago in winter is beyond me, but they've got it.  It's gorgeous.  I love all the bridges, and the Japanese garden, in particular the island that is inaccessible to mere mortals but somehow remains neatly mowed and pruned at all times.  Great for seeing all kinds of nature, from plants to flowers from all over, to birds.  The conservatory area is beautiful as well.  It's probably too late for this year, but the Christmas lights were beautiful, and the Wonderland Express exhibit was really cool.  A gift shop and cafe make for a pleasant afternoon visit.

My go to place in every weather. If you're into nature walks, watching the seasons change and exploring the outdoors (without camping equipment), this park is for you. I'm a member, and although it is about 40 min drive from my house, I come here at least once every 1-2 months, and each time it's a new and pleasant experience.

I make it a point to visit the Botanic Garden in each new city I visit. Chicago's garden, while not the biggest (that honor goes to the University Botanic Garden in Moscow, Russia), is exceptionally well designed and allows you to experience it almost in private even on most popular days. I would skip Mother's Day though.

When I was a kid, my mom dragged me and my brothers here. I thought it was boring--walking around looking at plants and trees? Yawn! Not for me! We brought our bikes!

But now as an adult, I understand the beauty of it. There's a lot for everyone here. If you want to walk around and look at plants and trees then CBG is totally for you. But, if you want to sit and find a relaxing spot with your Kindle or book, CBG is for you too! If you want a morning spot to walk with other stroller moms, CBG works for that as well.

The grounds are immense and beautiful, no question. Everything is well-maintained, helping all the greenery stay in perfect condition. There is nothing over the top or trendy with the landscaping, this is nature for all to enjoy. Admission is Free, but there is a fee for parking. CBG Members do get free parking. Check the website often as there are special offer deals as well. I'm not sure about the biking now, but the website addresses that as well.

I could easily spend several hours here. There's a nice cafe if you need a snack. The gardens are wheelchair accessible and there are rest areas (public bathrooms at different points and they are very well maintained).

Fucking. Rad. I adore this place. At first, I was like...NO. I'm not that old yet...then I read signs like "Japanese Gardens" Sensory Garden" Spider and Evening Islands"..."FRUITS AND VEGETABLES".

Being a Cali-girl, you can guess what perked my interests right away. This place is incredible .I could spend a day (more!) here.

    Tips?

-Have someone drop you off...parking is 20 bucks. Its free to stroll right in
-Bring a water bottle....there are drinking fountains everywhere encouraging you to refill
-For land's sake, bring your camera! Its worth lugging around
-Be prepared with the kids. Mine is four..and very patient, she loved
-Take it in...really do. I imagine the different seasons bring a different experience. I loved going around this time!

    A Chicago jewel!

One of the great things about living in Chicago-land and the north shore in particular, is the botanical gardens. One would need to travel to Butchart Gardens in Victoria, BC or Brooklyn, USA to find anything as beautiful!

I so love this place since my children were young and now with my grandchild. Although the summer time is the best time to go and my favorite time is when the tulips are in full bloom, it's an all-season destination. This winter was extra special as the Wonderland Express was free courtesy of Grainger on Tuesdays and the evening is so delightful with all the trees lit. I am still amazed that I will miss a few buildings along the way each time I have gone. The craft room is nicely done and kept clean constantly with the children who come to play.

This place is amazing.  I would recommend it to anyone who wanted to spend some quiet, quality time with their friends or family, while doing something fun and relaxing.  My big tip - park at the public parking lot at the metra station down the street for $2 and save yourself $18.   On a nice day, you won't mind the 10-minute walk too much.  Entrance is free, but you have to pay $5 for the model train exhibit for adults and $3 for kids over 3.

Once inside, we strolled around (literally, with two strollers), enjoyed the beautiful day and took a peek at some model trains.  What I loved most - the natural beauty of the place, the bonsai garden, the great views and the quiet.  My preschooler loved the model train exhibit and my 4-month-old appreciated the well-equipped and clean family bathroom.  So everyone was happy at the end of the excursion, except my husband who had to trek back to the car to save us all some time because we stayed too long and delayed lunch! But even he had to admit that he would do it over!

I ended up back in the Botanic Gardens for the first time in a good five years for my friend's wedding reception. We were lucky enough to hit absolutely perfect weather (highs in the upper 70s and sunny) and a beautiful day for being in this location outdoors for a wedding. We had to walk a ways (a pain in dress clothes!) to the reception site, but it was totally worth it!

The reception was on the Botanic Gardens lake, with beautiful views - my friend and her husband got some great pictures kissing by the lake - a covered patio for eating, and a non-covered extension of the patio for the beer and wine bar and space for mingling. For wedding food, the food was good, and the DJ kept us entertained throughout the whole night. I had a great time with all of my old friends and think this was a great choice for a wedding reception. Like any other outdoor venue, you never know what the weather will bring, but when you hit a nice day this location is a jackpot!

I was slightly surprised that I hadn't reviewed this place earlier.
I've been a couple of times, once with work to help with some volunteer work, I got weeding duty. I didn't get much chance to fully explore the gardens that day but from that initial visit I was sure I would go again.

Couple of visits later (to see the vast gardens) and it was pretty much a no-brainer where some wedding pics would be taken.

It's easy to get to near the highway and you have to pay to park in the garden but that is basically the entrance fee. Pack in more people in the car and it gets cheaper!

N.B. You need a license to be able to take pictures at the Botanic Garden for weddings. You don't need one as a tourist/visitor though. It's hard to go round getting pics taken in a large group with your wife wearing a big white gown and go unnoticed!

There's plenty of interesting things to see and walking round on a nice day is very calming.

Worth a visit - if on a budget, park outside and walk in.

I've been to this spot many, many times over the years, but recentlyy I had the opportunity to attend a kite festival here. This is a group of local professional kite flyers who over a recent weekend gave demonstrations and instruction, and most interestingly kite "performances" with one or multiple kite flyers, doing this wonderful choreographed-to-music kite flying displays. Kind of the kite version of the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds, all synchronized and done to music. All I can say was what a perfect venue for this. Even though it was interrupted on Sunday by a big one-hour thunderstorm, we all took cover and came back out when it passed. Thanks to the on-site  cafe.

Chicago Botanic is an incredibly impressive collection of gardens, trails and flowers and a real local gem. Free to enter, there is only a charge for parking, which shared is really quite minimal. You can spend a half day or a full day wandering the many acres, and during any season, it's a great escape from the urban pressures. There's a cafe, a gift shop, and many special (seasonal) exhibits, classes, wine tastings. Whoever is paying for this place, thanks, ey! Nice of you to let me in.

Worth the price of parking.  I love plants, but had put off going here because of the amusement-park pricing for driving.  There isn't a good transit option, so I just put it off.  I finally got a coupon for half-priced parking and loaded up the car to check it out.

It is very big.  If you have wee kiddies or others who cannot walk much, you will need multiple trips to see it all.  Also note they have a few indoor buildings, so if it starts raining you have stuff to see.

I appreciate all the signage labeling plants and offering gardening tips.  Though I wouldn't mind more.

Very impressive gardens - everything is well planned/designed and impeccably maintained. Beds are weed free and plants appear to be pruned and deadheaded regularly.

My personal favorite areas are the Japanese gardens, the walled garden and of course the rose garden. Something is always blooming no matter when you go. And, of course the ice cream at the Rose Garden Terrace makes for a nice break on a warm day.

It does get crowded on weekends, but the garden is so big you'll be able to find a peaceful spot or shady bench with little trouble. There is free WiFi in Regenstein Hall & the Visitor Center - nice touch!

Be sure to check the events calendar, as it seems there is always something going on. Today (a beautiful, sunny day perfect for a garden visit) was the Midwest Bonsai show - very cool. We also got to see a Japanese Taiko drumming demo which was impressive.

FYI - admission is "free" but parking is $20 per car. Given the care lavished on the grounds, it's money well spent.

I was impressed by this place.  My wife is an avid gardener and outdoor lover and she had wanted to go to this place.  It is huge and has gardens of just about any variety.  I especially loved the Japanese themed garden and the English Country Garden.  They have a building with a "green" roof made up of rooftop garden and solar panels.  It is pretty amazing to see.  We spent 2 hours walking around and didnt even see half the place.  They have a very interesting botany collection on display.  The place can get busy but you can find quiet spots to enjoy some amazing views.  If you come to Chicago or live here - you need to go see this place!

    Absolutely magnificent!! Beautiful, Beautiful gardens.

I've lived 15 minutes away from this place for years, and had never been. Went last weekend and really enjoyed it. It's a photographers dream! The lush grounds sprawl long and wide. It was quite a bit larger than I'd ever imagined, and it's so serene. You'd never guess you were within a bustling city. You'd probably need to come several days to see it all. And I bet with each visit, you'd see something that you didn't see the previous times, just because there's so much to take in!

This is really a treasure in Chicago (suburbs). With a $20 parking fee, it's free to get in. It seems to be broken out into sections by style of plant / flower. It's nicely marked, by signs that are not too obtrusive. Nice paths to follow, and water fountains all around. There's a nice little pond with a fountain. There are benches to relax on. There were a few families there with blankets and picnic baskets. There's a cafe / souvenir shop. The grounds are meticulously clean.

Bring your tennis shoes, cuz it's a lot of walking! And don't forget your camera.  This is a must-see attraction. I can't wait to go back.

I went for the Holiday Express exhibit, which is in-doors so I didn't really get to tour the entire grounds.

The trains and the exhibit itself was wonderful and it really put me in the holiday spirit!  Very good for kids and adults.

Watch out for strollers and running children as the exhibit room is winding and can get cramped and crowded.

Definitely bring your camera because there is alot of detail to take in.

I plan to return to the Botanical garden on my next trip to the Chicago area, and really want to check this place out when the weather is warmer because I hear the Japanese Garden is amazing.

While there is so much good to say about this place, there are some eeeh's and meh's as well. How you take this is up to you and or how much money you want to spend.

Admission is $20.00 to park a vehicle. Doesn't matter how many people are in the vehicle, its $20 per vehicle. It may be a better deal to have four or five people in a vehicle than say go by yourself or two people in a vehicle. With that said. purchasing a membership makes economic sense, given that this is a place you want to visit several times a year.

We wanted to visit the garden with the model railroad BUT that was another $5.00 admission. These kinds of gardens for the most part are really cool, but decided our money would be better spent elsewhere in the park. That's like charging $5.00 to cross the long ass wooden bridge to Spider Island. Forget it.

The food and drink at The Garden Cafe. Democrat and Republican politicians would feel they're in competition with who would screw the Americans with high prices. Seriously, the food and drink (both alcoholic and non alcoholic) were terribly overpriced. The "rustic pizza" slice I brought tasted pretty good (roasted veggies were just about right on), it certainly was NOT worth $3.50 per slice. Now has we known about the outdoor grill, which made burgers, brats, other meats, then at least I would've gone for that. Yeah, that would've been overprices like a burger at the B-Spot (think Iron Chef Symon from here in Cleveland area) BUT I bet their grilled food was so much better than the stuff they served inside. Smelled really good, that's for sure!

Last but not least, dealing with certain tourists who have no sense of manners nor American culture, not to mention the guests who think they own the place or think their body order doesn't smell. Of course that's a given in most places with a lot of visitors. Funny story- just as I was about to leave my parking space, a car loaded with tourists stopped right behind me, and stayed there for at least a minute or two. One of those knuckleheads rolled down the window and asked if I was leaving the parking space. My response was " well how could I when you're blocking the way!?!?!?" Sure enough they figured out what to do in order for them to get the parking spot.

Overall, this is a beautiful, awe inspired, relaxing place to get away from it all within the big metropolitan area. If I lived in the area and planned to visit this place at least six times a year then Id definitely consider buying a membership. Certainly a place worthy to visit and where you don't need to have a PhD in Botany to appreciate it. Id come back again, but this time as a wiser, more informed consumer. OH YEAH.

A beautiful, peaceful, HUGE place to enjoy being outdoors.

I have always enjoyed visiting the Garden, just hated paying the $20. parking fee (it is free if you bike in, on the North Branch Bicycle Trail, or walk in...) so I finally bit the bullet and bought a membership - so now I can visit, with as many people as can fit in my car, or alone, and not pay for the next year. Yeah!

So big, you cannot walk all the paths in one day. I like to go on weekdays, when it has less people, and find shady nooks and benches to sit and meditate upon the views. I always feel calm and cleansed, afterward. Beautiful, well laid out gardens, including my love - vegetable and fruit gardens. Music in the evenings, special exhibits that are often free, woodlands and prairie gardens and natural areas, as well as many formal flower displays. The food is expensive, so bring your own (just take all your garbage with you, please!).

Most people do not realize that the Chicago Botanic Gardens are owned by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, (and is on Forest Preserve land) and that almost 2/3 of its operating budget comes from Cook County property taxes. So - be glad that your tax dollars are helping to support a world-class garden and research center!!!

Extremely well-organized, laid out garden.  Plenty of shaded benches where you can escape the humid summer day.  Lots and lots of nice water views.  Tons of tables lying around where you can have a small lunch with your sig other.

I do wish that they would charge by person instead of by car, although I guess if you have a large family that could come in handy.  Unfortunately, since it's just the two of us, $20 is a bit pricey.

I absolutely love the Botanical Gardens! I go there almost every day every summer! The only thing I would love to see change though is the Japanese Garden, but i do understand that a lot of the traditional Japanese plants could not survive the harsh Chicago weather and the DO have some plants that are supped to be on the island in the green house due to the climate problem.
Regardless my absolute favorite part of the garden is the Dixon Prairie! i go there to sketch, medidate, or just zen out. I like that they have at least one big chunk of the garden wild and unorganized, thats where people feel nature the most!
It's great for walks and if you ride your bike there its free to get in! (you only have to pay for parking of any vehicle bigger than a motor cycle).
Great atmosphere and great place to be!

I've been a member of the Botanic Garden since 2005. In fact, it's the only membership I've consistently renewed year after year. You only need to visit the garden 4 or 5 times a year for the membership to pay for itself. Having been to various botanic gardens in the US, I can honestly say that the Chicago Botanic Garden is one of the nicest. The fruit and vegetable island, the English Walled Garden, and the Japanese Garden are particular favorites of mine.

Although most people probably visit in the spring and summer, winter can also be beautiful here, especially after a snowfall. Special events, like the Spooky Pooch Parade for Halloween, are also really enjoyable. All in all, the garden provides a lovely respite from the city.

Perfect place for family time and time with my husband.  Nice to see all the plants from my garden represented in various displays and gardens specific to purpose.

Planning a bike trip over there soon.

    Dear Spring,

    Please come soon!

    Love,
    Heather

On a crisp cold Saturday, we drove out to the gardens.  It was supposed to be sunny, but instead we were treated to a cold cloudy day.  The sun peaked out maybe a few times.  Glad I brought my hat, scarf and gloves.

Wait, what is that?  Is that Spring Meadow Saffron in bloom?  Why, indeed it is.  And holy crap!  The Katherine Hodgkin Orchid Iris is beautiful!  There's hoards of them popping up as well!  Oh Fukujukai Amur Adonis Buttercup... how I love your Spring yellow happiness!

Turns out, Spring answered me, and yes, it is here.

How many updates can one have? Well, I'm updating y'all on the Chicago Botanic Garden again, because this was my first winter visit, and it was a great one. The annual Wonderland Express exhibit is now closed for the season. But bookmark this, and put it in your Blackberry calendar for next year!

More than 90 miniatures of Chicago landmarks such as the Pritzker Pavilion, Soldier Field, the Sears and Hancock Towers, "the Bean", and many others, are made with all natural materials such as moss, leaves and gourds, and set amongst winter greenery. Trains wind their way amongst the landmarks and also along an elevated trellis made from branches. It truly brings out the wonder and merriment of the Holidays!

The Arid Greenhouses were great to gather a little warm, see some cactii and topiary sculptures, before heading to the great outdoors.

Normally, this place can be really crowded, but although the Wonderland Express was slow going, only a few brave souls ventured outside to the Gardens for some incredible views of snow-covered firs, the English Garden with nary a footprint in the snow, and the Japanese Garden looking very Zen, covered in white. I've heard one can rent snowshoes here, and the long Prairie Paths would be perfect for that activity. It's a true Winter Wonderland, and one of my favorite nature haunts around.

What can you say about a field of fire- the tulips blooming on the esplanade was so vibrant that I swear it was flames licking the sky.
The cafeteria is full of upscale healthy choices and it is the best display of Bonsai anywhere.

Chicago Botanic Gardens is a must stop in the Highland Park area. This is one of the most beautiful botanical gardens I have seen and it is completely free (except for $20 parking). See if your hotel or friend will drop you off, or, if you are a local become a member which gives you free parking. Wander the gardens, photograph the beautiful plants and flowers, or go for a power walk/run around the circumference of the park.

    Enchanted heaven on earth!

I never seem to manage to walk through the entire place...so much to see and enjoy.

Great place to take anyone who enjoys being outdoors, flora, afternoon strolls, etc.

I'm sorry I visited on a blazingly hot 90+ degree day last time, but I still had a great time.

I'm going to try to go once a year.  I should go once a season- things always change!

    can't wait for this summer.

Japanese gardens here are my fave.

this is a nice place to get away and enjoy nature. the only gripe i have is that parking is EXPENSIVE! take the train, take a bus, walk or get dropped off! Admission is free and there are tours you can take at an added cost.
you can really see how much time they take to make their gardens beautiful. i cant wait to go back and walk around and go to their fruit and veggie garden!

I absolutely love this place!!! It's a nice way to relax and kind of get away from everything. It's funny how the garden is so close to the highway, but it feels like you are in a totally different world. You can spend the entire day there just walking among the flowers and trees. It's great exercise! They have so many different kinds of plants there to enjoy. My favorite trees are willow trees and I've never seen so many in one place! I also love the bodies of water there. They just make such spectacular views. Areas I love the most have to be the Japanese Garden and Evening Island. Hands down one of my favorite places to go!

I only saw a fraction of the garden but it was enough to be charmed.  It's open late (and open super early at 7 AM) with free admission, green meadows, several lakes, nine islands, and of course all manner of flowers and plants in 24 formal display gardens (rose garden, Japanese garden, English garden, a bonsai section) and 4 natural areas.  You may spot some adorable garden creatures - like tiny chipmunks and bunnies.

I heard that it's stroller friendly.  If walking isn't your thing, you can catch a tram tour (not free).  If you get hungry or feel like shopping, they have a gift store and café.  The Garden Grille offers wine, beer, grilled specialties, salads, soups, and free wi-fi (!)

    * Ale-Braised Sheboygan Bratwurst ($8.75): A soft pretzel roll, juicy bratwurst, and soft, very sweet apple kraut.  You can add mustard and ketchup to it.  The kraut was too sweet for me and I prefer a warm bun.

Three hundred eight five (385) acres of peaceful paths and scenic views make it a place you're unlikely to ever tire of and one worth of frequent visits.

Parking is expensive ($20) but free for members.
