Not that I would go there on purpose, BUT if you are
1. At the North Beach craving for some casual vietnameeze
2. Want to have a good deal for lunch
3. Like delisious sliced pork sandwiches
4. Want to sit in the place that's not too crowdy
5. Wanna take-away some.
I assure you by my multiple lunch experience, that you will like it.
YUM. After reading the reviews here and realizing this place is only a few blocks from our apartment, we mozied over one Friday afternoon to try lunch. What a treat!
We started with some spring rolls as an appetizer. They came with a delicious peanut sauce. They were cooked to perfection, and thank God, although I spied green inside, that green was NOT cilantro (the most despised and vile herb on the planet).
My husband had the beef short ribs, which were delicious. I was expecting them hillbilly-style, slathered in disgusting sauce. They weren't. They were crispy and delicious.
Although it was on the appetizer menu, I had the vegetarian crepe for my lunch. It was definitely the perfect size for a lunch. The crepe was light and fluffy and filled with delicious vegetables.
The service was great. In fact, she knew we hadn't been there before. Hmmm, a server who remembers faces. Smart woman.
In short, the food is inexpensive, the restaurant is clean, and the service is very good. A very good deal for lunch. We're going back again this Friday, and though I tend to be a "rut" type person when it comes to food, I will force myself to try something new and will update this review accordingly.
When my boyfriend was living in North Beach, this was one of our no-fail places to grab Viet grub. I usually had their sandwiches (banh mi ga) or the pho. Never failed to hit the spot!
I have to say, I always wondered about the name...why isn't there a "k" or an extra "o"? Chick-n-noodle-doo? Is it copyrighted? Trademarked? As a result, I always referred to the place as "Chic...do!"
My mother works in Chinatown and frequents this place when she needs a break from your standard dim sum/ rice plate fare, usually ordering their chicken noodle soup (go figure) or their Vietnamese sandwiches.
For this year's Chinese new year parade I graciously volunteered to video tape her organization's trek in the dark from downtown to Chinatown and in order to assure none of us passed out, a group of 15-20 of us grabbed some of Chic-n's chicken Vietnamese sandwiches and rice paper rolls to chow down on in our trek to the parade start from the orgs headquarters.
In terms of eating something on the run, they sandwiches were perfect for us to grub on, drums/other parade necessities in tow. And were, although eaten quite quickly, great.
Service was clean, fast, and much easier to access than other Vietnamese-Chinese places in the area. ( I used to work in Ctown during the summers, and had I known this was there I would have opted out of battling my way to the counter at other such viet-nese places like Little Paris..). I have yet to try anything else here, but next time I am in the area and searching a meal, I'll have to check out something else from the Chic-n's menu.
I hereby give this place a negative rating based on the following:
1) Owned and run by chinese. Nobody there was Vietnamese
2) Only white people eating during rush hour lunch
3) Where is the Hoisin and chili sauce? That brown and red thing is definitely not asian. The chili tasted like ketchup. Without proper condiments, this place is a joke.
4) The pho had too much MSG.
The broth had not settled in. I do not comprehend where all these positive reviews come from. Obviously, you guys and girls do not know what authentic is.
The tripe was plain nasty
5) The coffee tasted more like Hong Kong Tea than Viet sua da coffee.
6) Again, a Viet restaurant run by Chinese. The menu in English&Chinese is the first give away. The chinese music is the second. The third give away was how they mispronounced "dac-biet"
The fourth giveaway was the puzzling face when I asked for "Xe Lua" which means Extra Large.

and #7
When you have to go to the potty 20 minutes after your meal.
i give this friendly, clean and mouthwatering dive five stars anyday ... the best part of it all .. it's cheap and very good! a total bang for your buck...
especially on a cold, gray, and melancholy afternoon, if you find yourself in north beach and suddenly have a craving for pho .. you won't miss the brightly painted yellow awning of Chic-n-Noodle-do ..
:: the pho ::
among others, they serve authentic vietnamese pho for less than the price of a fancy pizza .. pho is around $5.95 for a large, and a dollar less for regular ...
::the grilled pork chop::
yesterday, their friendly and family-style wait staff insisted that we try the grilled pork chop instead of their Shanghai noodles; the pork chop she claimed was their flagship dish .. we succumbed to her suggestion .. and ooh! orgasmic delight! the cut was just right, marinated with perfection, the pork chop was tender and melted in our mouths ... price was i think under $6.00 again .. gotta love the cheapness factor! ...
at the end of the meal, you don't get the heavy feeling that your stomach is bloated, then a pang of guilt promising, i'll never eat like a pig again ... the food is definitely not oily, on the contrary, it is light, the portions just right, generous but not abundant.
among the available drinks, include fun asian sweet drinks: egg soda with condensed milk, grass jelly, and three color coconut milk ... the grass jelly reminds me of the filipino halo-halo sweet ... but this version is lighter, healthier and equally tasty ..
yesterday, a lunch for two cost us a whopping total of $12.45 !! can you beat that?
disappointing...while the interior is cleaner and nicer than most joints in the area...no flies buzzin'...dandy little vietnamese joint...yet....the food left me with a frown....clearly the brown sauce they have (mis)labeled "hoisin sauce" was far from it......and the hot sauce....definitely not sriracha...there are some things that should never be skimmed in a vietnamese pho restaurant....authentic sauces...a must:
1) lee kum kee hoisin sauce
2) huy fong sriracha
Definitely a great Pho (curry chicken), at least everything except for the chicken. If you like lots of bones and having to pick the meat off of them, then order the curry chicken pho. If not, then just order the chicken noodle...
This place kicks ass. I was turned on to this place by a few people i work with, now I'm addicted. Things not to miss are the fresh rolls, wonton soup , and grilled pork sandwich. Great food, clean, cheap and super nice staff.
I should know better than to go cross culture. I ordered the wonton noodle soup (it's a Vietnamese place) and drooled over what my lunch companions got. Next time!
eh.
nothing wrong with the place. it's a fast food asain place. nothing special. what can you expect.
grilled pork sandwich wasn't really like the vietnamese sandwich i was expecting.
no mayo, no pate, weird large chunks of lettuce, somewhat pickled carrots. ok it was a half-assed effort at a vietnamese sandwich.
but it was $4. but then again cafe dolci has the most amazing sandwiches for $1 more!
2 stars overall.
3 stars if you're only judging it within americanized asian fast food places.
If you are in North Beach and want some Pho in a relatively clean place then this is the spot. I just had some Pho ga'(chicken) and was very satisfied. The chicken sandwich was OK but convenient to take n go. If you go here just stick to what other reviewers approve of. Some dishes they offer are not too great.
Cute name, cute sign, great food. This little family run place has solid pho and goi cuon. That is as far as my review really goes because I have never gone past that. The pho tai is just about the best in town and I have eaten enough greasy pho broth to know. It is rich and aromatic and if you eat it there (they also have take out) it rivals some of the best places around. This is another one of this little hidden gems buried on a back street (if the intersection of Stockton and Vallejo qualify). Pair this up with a nice Sauv Blanc or Gerwertztraminer and you are off to the races. Great food, great prices and friendly owners. Bring cash because they do not take any cards.
In between bustling North Beach and over crowded Chinatown is this simple Vietnamese joint. It's nice to have a clean, non-greasy, fast service, friendly service place! Not a complicated place, just good food. Inexpensive, too! Noodles and rice plates about 6$, pho about 5$. Enough to get you full, but not stuffed and feeling sick.
what is this place doing in north beach and what the heck is a chic-n-noodle-do? regardless, the food is really cheap and quite tasty, so check it out if you have a hankering for pho!
I just returned from lunch at the lovely Chic n Noodle Do. I love it not only for the name, nor for the fact that there is always a puzzle being worked on on one of the tables (which in its finished product is sealed and hung proudly on the wall) but for the vittles. Today I thoroughly enjoyed a curry chicken pho-squeezed a bit of lemon on it and sprinked some bean sprouts around and voila! A big bowl of heaven for $4.95 (large is $1 extra)All the various condiments are labeled for easy reference on the tables-fish sauce, hoisin, soy sauce, chili sauce, etc. Lots of vermicelli, potatoes and carrots and the chicken (once you fish it off the bone)and the broth is gorgeous and just salty enough and not heavy with the flavor of curry- the cilantro flavor really shines through! I ate the whole thing (left the bones)and felt absolutely right with the world. On another I had the chicken sandwich ($3.75), a delicious Vietnamese standard with lots of carrots and daikon, mayonnaise and grilled chicken on French bread. The spring rolls were also good. I still love the name though, and it has inspired me to someday open up a chicken-related restaurant and call it "Do You Like Chicken" that would read as a statement, not a question.
