finally. ive passed by chez henri about six million times and i never went in for dinner until a couple of weeks ago. my and my lady friend went for dinner on a very cold night. the hostess smiled at us and took us to our table. this place is dark and cozy. romantic, if youre into that shit.

our waiter came by immediately with a couple of menus and went over a few items they did not have available because of NYE. we got the tartare and the ceviche. both excellent in flavor and presentation. for entrees i got the sea scallops which rocked my world. comes with shredded oxtail which was delicious. miss P got the swordfish which she did not even let me try cause she doesnt love me all that much. it looked good tho.

we paired this fancy dinner with a bottle of wine and the total was around $150 including tip. not precisely the cheapest dinner of my life but it was well worth it. perhaps i was just happy to be having a  great time only steps away from where i once got dumped via telephone.

This was my first time at Chez Henri, and last.

Similar to other reviews, my low opinion is based on poor service and quality for the price point. I would recommend Sandrine's in Harvard Square, Randezvous in Central, and Grill 23 in Boston for superior ambiance, service, and drinks selection for similar price - especially if you're entertaining.

    Food:

    Blanquette de Lapin ($12)
Excellent on a cold, windy day. Enjoyed the well cooked vegetables and rabbit with pasta (like a glorified, creamy mac and cheese).

    Bistro Salad ($15)
My guest ordered and ate it, but didn't enjoy it much. Quantity over quality for this dish.

    Steak Frits ($29)
Cooked to a perfect medium (usually one has to request medium rare to get the right medium, but this was just right). Taste was interesting, but the cut itself wasn't that great. I've had better quality beef elsewhere.  Frites were a little too soft, leaning toward limp, and comes in large quantities. This dish also comes with a small salad - redundant after the appetizer, which we should have skipped.

    Pan Seared Flounder ($29)
Flounder itself, uneventful. With the sauce, very good. Lobster-coconut nage and aioli on the flounder was just right - doesn't overpower the fish. Kale complemented the softness of the fish.

    Orange Creme Brulee ($9)
Too sweet; warm in some places, cool in others, and a little on the watery/soft side - yogurt consistency; I prefer firmer creme brulee.  I couldn't quite taste the spice with the overpowering orange flavor. I've had better at restaurant chains. The pistachio biscuit that comes with it was nice.

    Earl Gray Tea
Tea is not served with a tea strainer/rest. By your second cup, the tea is over steeped.  Earl Gray was ok - but not as satisfying as I've had elsewhere. Cup used is thick, like a soup cup at diners, which I abhor when drinking tea.

    The restaurant/staff:
I used OpenTable to make reservations for 5:30p on a Saturday night.  We were late, so I called in advance - not a problem.  When we arrived, we were seated immediately.

As you enter, you face the bar area, which, during a cold night, means cold air will blow into you each time the door opens. Luckily, we were seated in the dining area, where it was warm. That's where the relief ends. The tables are very close to each other; lighting is dim and furniture dark - great for mood lighting, if that's what you prefer. Paintings on the walls do not inspire. The floor shook each time the wait staff passed by, which was often, and my bag, which I hung by my chair, was pushed and shoved at each passing.  I nearly got elbowed a few times by the waiter serving the table next to us.

There were only 3 or 4 occupants when we arrived, and the noise level was low.  This changed rapidly as dinner progressed, and by the middle of our meal, the noise level was grating. You had to lean across the table and speak loudly.

Patrons seemed to be mid 20s to 30s (grad students), parents with their children (college students), older/almost or already retired Cambridge professor types.

The experience wouldn't have been so bad had our waiter not been uptight - not quite rude, but didn't get the feeling we were welcome. Similar to other reviewers' comments, the waiter did emphasize the difference between the bill that incorporated a discount vs the usual amount. I showed my discount via a smartphone screen, and the waiter made a fuss - claiming he's always had patrons use paper and not digital discounts (reiterated his confusion four times) before finally offering to go to his boss to consult. I would have been more sympathetic had he not said it in a way that seemed pretentious. All that was required was to copy the ID/order number down and type it into the register, which I had suggested at the beginning.

I generally tip 20% at any restaurant on the original amount, and higher if I've had a good experience, but not here.  I would have preferred spending my last weekend in Boston anywhere other than Chez Henri for a $100+ meal.

Very disappointed, and will never come again.

Chez Henri is hit-or-miss. My favorite bar menu item is the conch fritters. You can't get those at many places around here, and Chez Henri does them well. The cuban sandwich is also quite good, but I don't think it deserves the ultra-high praise that lots of people seem to give it. I mean, it's a decent cuban -- nothing more, nothing less. The french onion soup is a perennial disappointment -- watery and flavorless every time. Last time I was there, I had the wood-grilled pork chop entree that was tasty, though the pork was overcooked (dry). My dining companion had the trout meuniere, which I tasted and liked much better. I really like chocolate desserts, and I've never had a good one here. Most recently I got a chocolate espresso pot du creme. It tasted old, like it had been made awhile ago (moisture droplets were on top of the chocolate), and it was served WAY too cold -- it was very refrigerated but clearly would've tasted much smoother and better if served at room temperature. The chocolate mousse tastes dietetic/sugar-free, presumably because it's made with bittersweet chocolate (not sweet enough for me). I branched out and tried an orange creme brulee, to see what it was like, and that was a disappointment too (was really loose, even for creme brulee, and not very flavorful).

So, to summarize, I'd go to the bar and order the conch fritters and maybe a cuban sandwich. Then I'd go elsewhere for dessert.

I think other Yelpers accurately described the food/cocktail and atmosphere situation. In summary, Chez Herni's menu is great; however, painfully overpriced.

My issue after coming here last night is with the waitstaff. During our meal they were very attentive, although we were here early on a weekday evening and were one of maybe 6 or so tables dining at the time.

When it came time to pay the bill, after leaving our credit card and a Groupon voucher, our waiter returned with the slips to sign with our bill adjusted for the Groupon, along with the Groupon voucher folded into fourths, with the fine print about tipping on the total pre-discounted bill amount circled in BIG RED CRAYON. Not pen. Crayon. Yup. He did that.

This is the third and final time I will be going to Chez Henri. I can deal with pretense, but I cannot deal with offense.

    Hey waiter, go fuck yourself.

I do not like this place. I didn't get the famous El Cubano that everyone raves about, but I did get shuffled around the bar like a cheap whore at a saloon.

Customer service in this place is non-existent. I told the hostess and the bartender that I was waiting for a friend. The bar was lousy with overweight women preaching the gospel of Jane Austen, and college professors talking about wheat grass and carbon footprints. These people apparently have priority over the lone woman who is actually drinking at the bar. I was told to move three times to accommodate those wearing horn-rimmed glasses and sweater vests.

When my dining companion arrived we were ushered to a table BEHIND A CURTAIN. Seriously? Yes. Seriously.

The food was good, no doubt. The service belonged in the bathroom, swirling in the toilet bowl.

Chez Henri was distinctively unimpressive to me - mostly because of the waitstaff.

I came to meet a friend for dinner and arrived slightly before her. I approached the hostess, noting the predominantly empty restaurant.

    "How many?" she asks.
    "Two," I say.
"Is the other on the way?"
No. I made the second person up, so she is not on her way. I am attempting to scam you by sitting alone in a table for two in your empty restaurant. "She's walking here, and is right up the street."
The hostess pauses while she passes judgment on whether or not I will be permitted to sit. After weighing the options for a moment, she moves me to a table. I move to the bar shortly thereafter because the table was right by the door.

Later in the meal, she props open the front door, enveloping the bar area in chilly air. She leaves the room for a few minutes while the cold November air courses through the restaurant. I can see my nail beds beginning to turn purple, and can't help but wonder why she felt the need to make the room so uncomfortable.

That's enough on the hostess for now, I'll get back to her later.

The bartender was our server. He was tasked with serving all the bar patrons as well as the tables in the area, which led to very slow service. He checked in every so often, but when we earnestly asked for just a minute more to decide on our meal, we were abandoned for 15 minutes while he served other tables, restocked the bar, and disappeared for a few moments. At one point, he asked if we wanted more bread and vanished after we said yes, the bread never to be seen.

The food was above average overall. The Autumn salad with "squash croutons" had a few pieces of soft squash, so that was strange. And the bread before dinner was cold. On the other hand, the mussels with curry and the trout were delicious.

At the end of the meal, bartender disappeared once again and was replaced with hostess behind the bar. Oh joy. Two couples next to us received their checks after we did and were able to pay and leave about 10 minutes before we were. We sat waiting with our checks and credit cards sitting blatantly in front of us, all the while being ignored by hostess. Both couples had groupons, and so did we.

Finally, hostess grabs our groupon and payment. Another patron at the bar loudly exclaims how cheap people are for using groupons. Hostess loudly agrees, standing 3 feet away from us, groupon in hand. That sealed the deal - I will never be back to Chez Henri.

We met a friend at Chez Henri before a concert on a Saturday night and the first thing we found was that the online menu and the actual menu were very different.  It was ok because we were all certainly able to find something we wanted but we all commented on the fact that it was different.  We all noted that the menu was not very French at all either.  But we started off with the special appetizer which was a corn cake topped with grilled shrimp, cilantro, goat cheese, pineapple and some greens.  It was good but a little spanish.  We all enjoyed it.  I don't think it really needed the shrimp as they were over-powered by the strong flavors of the dish - or perhaps bigger shrimp for a more seafood punch.  We also shared a simple green salad topped with shaved radishes, blue cheese and nuts with a pomegranite vinaigrette.  It went nicely with the fresh french bread served to the table with nicely salted butter.  For dinner, we got the cod which was tender and moist and nicely accompanied with lobster chunks and fingerling potatoes but the greens were a large mass of green and not very appetizing.  I got a scallop special.  The scallops were also cooked perfectly, seared on the outside, tender and moist on the inside and sitting in a reduction of oxtail with slivers of oxtail meat which were delicious and a nice accompaniment to the scallops.  In the center of the plate was a yucca cake topped with fresh greens, tomatoes and red onion.  The dish was excellent.  I even asked for more bread to sop up the reduction sauce and the little bits of oxtail.  Cleaned my plate!  The last dish was a Cassoulet (bean stew) with lamb, duck confit and wild boar sausage.  The dish could've had a bit more moisture to it.  A spoon was given with the dish but it could've easily been eaten with a fork.  The flavor of the meat was infused throughout the dish so it was quite good.  There was a lot of lamb but the duck portion was small and the wild boar sausage was quite big.  By the time we were done with out dinners, we waited and waited for our waiter to come back to the table and even asked the table clearer for him but he still didn't return.  When we were finally able to get his attention, he brought dessert menus but we felt we didn't have enough time for dessert and still be able to make our concert.  We chose to have coffee instead and even that took another 1/2 an hour.  We allotted 2 hours for dinner and travel time (15 mins) to the concert.  It took all of 2 hours for dinner without dessert.  We were 10 minutes late to our concert and hence lost our seats!  So, if you want non-French food that's really good, allow at least 2 and half hours to enjoy it.

I have mixed feelings about Chez Henri. If I were rating the place on food & drink, they'd get a 5. But a bad first experience colors things a little darkly for me.

Chez Henri was recommended as the best of the best for a cuban. That was spot on. I haven't had a tremendous amount of cubano experience, but it is the best I've had so far.

The bad stuff occurred during my first visit and Barbara summed it up nicely so I won't rehash. I will say that I did send an email to the owner about my experience and I never got a response. That also leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Even if you don't agree, at least acknowledge my email.

This visit was lovely. Was it the company? Might have helped. Did the cuban overcome my concern that they'd come up with another reason not to accept my Groupon? Well it made me feel all warm and fuzzy. But the niggle was there. Well so was Miss Wonderful the manager so that was a reminder I couldn't avoid.

All went off without a hitch. The waitress/hostess seemed maybe a bit more attentive this time. We also knew better than to get the cheese plate.

So chicken empanadas as an app were quite nice. The drinks were also well made. Barbara had a Periodista and I got an Italian something or other. We both got the cuban this time. Divine. Extra pickles added just the right vinegary-ness.

My cappuccino was cold. Not quite sure how that happened since delivery didn't take long enough to make it so. But it was quickly replaced.

I'd have to say that if you really wanted a great cuban, this is the place. Just don't expect much out of the rest of the offerings.

Okay, we had a Groupon and we needed to use it. I tell you this, I was concerned about what would happen based on recent reviews, and I wasn't sure I wanted to even use my discounted Groupon. But I did, and I'm glad.

My husband and I opted to sit in the bar area for our 6:00 p.m. dinner on a lazy Sunday evening over the Columbus Day weekend (tonight!). Based on what I'd read here, I was concerned about them not taking our Groupon. That concern melted away as I told the hostess that we had one and she said, "Great!"

Rob was our server (and apparently also the bartender), and he was professional and kind. We ordered the Cuban (of course), the Duck Tamale and the Conch Fritters. We let Rob decide in which order he'd bring them so we started with the fritters. A nice, light bite to start things off. I'm not a big eater, but even a nibble or two was sweet enough to get things moving.

The Cuban was wonderful, and that's coming from someone who's had the privilege of having pork sandwiches from Paseo, Seattle's most amazing Cuban and pork sandwich establishment. The Duck Tamale, on the other hand, left something to be desired. The corn tamale was too thick and overpowered the poor duck (which we love). When Rob asked if everything was to our liking, I took it upon myself to be honest about the tamale. He seemed very interested in knowing exactly what was wrong, and he finally understood that the tamale was too thick and the ratio of corn to duck was off. We ate it anyway and finished off the salad it sat upon as that was good (if not a bit too dressed). Rob even offered to get us another dish to replace the tamale, but we didn't feel the need.

Anyway, we ordered tea and dessert, a delicious apple-caramel bread pudding, and then got our bill. Rob told us that dessert was on the house, courtesy of the owner, to make up for the tamale. Now, I've read lots of reviews on Chez Henri, and one thing that kept coming up was the service. I'll say this: Rob wasn't going to get points for warmth, but he sure did everything I expect a server to do: he was professional, concerned and informative without hovering.

I will say this: they need to learn to clear dishes away when diners are finished eating. Too many times, our empty plates sat on the table when it was clear that there was nothing left to eat. And remember, we were there at a quiet time on a Sunday evening. Those plates should have been removed much more promptly.

Overall, I'd say we'd eat there again. We'd like to try the main menu and I don't think we'd wait for a Groupon to go back.

Man, I wish I had read the other reviews before ordering the cheese plate!

Anyway, the bf and I went to Chez Henri on a Sunday night and sat in the bar area. We ordered the chicken empanada, the cuban sandwich, the cheese plate and the duck tamale over spinach. The chicken empanada was pretty good, 3 pieces that also came with black beans, salsa, and sour cream. And a super lemony side salad.

The cheese plate though! Ridiculous. I expected a little more effort from a restaurant if they're going to offer a cheese plate. Instead, what I got were 3 pieces of cheese (decent sized) with a handful of dried cranberries, one dried apricot, and a small bowl full of peanuts. Oh yeah and some bread that was overly crunchy. The cheeses were all pretty mild, showing zero range and the guy who brought it out didn't bother telling us what cheeses they were. Honestly, Chez Henri, don't put a cheese plate on your menu if you aren't going to at least try.

The cuban sandwich was pretty delicious although I think Publick House's cubano may be better. I wasn't a huge fan of the fried plantain chips although the salsa is good. The duck tamale was pretty good as long as you ate it along with the spinach underneath with its bacon strewn mustard dressing.

Final thought: Not really worth the price even with a groupon. And isn't that sad...

Walking into Chez Henri for the first time had an instantaneous effect, I had found one of the few restaurants/bars I would call one of "mine". I was delighted by the dark décor, low lighting, and cozy bar area. The intimacy for me is important as large restaurants feel so impersonal. As I saddled up at the bar I was happy that out of the few choice draft selections Guinness was one of them...Phew. Wait....do I hear the Smiths playing over their music system? Is that My Bloody Valentine. Wow, now I am definitely at home. I wasn't all that familiar with the concept of French Cuban fusion so I asked the extremely helpful  bartender to put herself in my shoes and guide me through the dining experience. "Say no more" I was told. Six minutes later and a few sips into my second Guinness I was met with an appetizer of what I can only describe as slightly orange and in a ball shape. "What is it? " I asked. "Don't worry, just try" is what I was told. Try I did, and it was simply delicious. The plate lasted all of 30 seconds as I devoured what I learned to be Conch Fritters. The inside of a shell is awesome.. who knew? Anyway, within 10 minutes my entrée was there. She had chosen Steak Frite and she couldn't have chosen better as the portion was huge and I was hungry. The steak was cooked just right and their fries were great. Nothing like indulging in a great steak while listening to more of the great music they played. He comes old REM, here is Doves, and now they are playing Biggie Smalls? Am I at home? I was met with a dessert that I can't remember the name of but it was chocolate and it was fantastic.
As it usually happens I ended up bumping into a few friends while I was outside taking a smoke break (yes I know...gross) so we ended up staying at Chez Henri for quite some time after I had finished eating. At the end of the night hunger crept back in and I gave the Cuban sandwich a go.  If you haven't eaten one of these yet put it on your bucket list, you will thank me. Great food, great atmosphere, great service, I will be back soon.

So remember my woeful experience at Bergamot?  Chez Henri occupies the same spot in a class of restaurants wherein it is completely standard to boast $14 starters, $29 entrees, $9 for the cheap Chardonnay, and bring you bread about 20 minutes after you sit down.  The discrepancy, however, between the food you get here and the food you got there is a right scandal.  In short, this is exactly what I wanted Bergamot to be, what it wasn't, and what it needs to aspire towards: a beautifully balanced, delightfully detailed, splendidly savory Fancy Night Out right in my backyard.

The decor manages to be both hip and homey, aglow in European warmth and luxurious reds.  The service managed to be both efficient and genuinely friendly.  Ah, mais non, but the food.  The fooooooood.

I started with the Maine mussels with saffron-garlic cream and smoked cod, and all I could crow on about the entire time was how downright BALANCED it all was--you could taste the cod AND the mussels, and still want to drink the broth with a straw.  My boyfriend, the more adventurous soul amongst us, got the unconscionably savory goat cheese arapas with grilled shrimp.  And then the steak frites.  Which might have killed him and sent him directly to heaven, no passing go, no collecting $200.  The frites were light and savory, and the steak was perfectly charred, big as your head, sitting in a bleu cheese bourbon sauce and lightly dusted with a delicate chimichurri.  AND YOU COULD STILL TASTE THE STEAK, YOU GUYS.

I, in the mood for comfort, opted for the roasted chicken, ham-laden mashed potatoes, apple puree, and sherry mushroom jus.  Simply put, this was what every wedding/corporate holiday party plate of chicken wants to be and never is.  This is no mere question of improving upon a classic--this is calling up chicken to play in the big leagues, and respectfully slapping its butt after its first triumphant home run.

Finally, and call me a philistine if you must, but the portions are generous without being gluttonous, and I appreciate that.  Nothing worse than stressing that each bite has to be properly savored and then hoping to stop for a cheeseburger on the way home.

Chez Henri, mon petit chou, tu es magnifique.

    Fin.

Went here with a reservation for the dinner area. A friend had recommended the Cuban sandwich, which was unfortunately only on the bar menu and you cannot order it in the sated dining area. We were also crammed into an area where one person sitin at the table is on a shared bench and the other a chair, unfortunately those on the shared bench are basically elbow to elbow with other people and you have no privacy in your conversations.

We moved back to the bar and ordered off of that menu which was far more reasonable and offered the items we actually wanted. The bartender gets an A for being knowledgeable and very attentive to the customers sitting there.

This place is pretty pricey for what it offers, and for that price I would expect some intimacy to my meal which is totally not available.

Everything I had heard about this place lead me to believe that I would love it.  I'm sad to say that I was sorely disappointed.

Our service experience was sort of strange - the hostess was our waitress, sort of.  But she was a little frazzled and disoriented with all of the things she was juggling.  She was lovely and nice, but not the best waitstaff.

The food was "eh".  For some reason, I was not thrilled with many of the offerings.  The variety was not really there for me.  And the menu items sounded good, but seemed unnecessarily complicated.  There were 2 items  listed on the chalkboard.  And they were out of one of them.  Here's a thought - ERASE IT FROM THE BOARD!!!

The menu was also a bit pricey - $31 for salmon seems a little much for me.

The place was packed, which did not surprise me on a Saturday night.  However, it was pretty loud - so much so that it was hard to talk without yelling.  I'd expect this from a bar or pub, but not as much from an upscale bistro.

and so, my review is "meh".  If i go back again, I'll try to do so in a different season so that hopefully the menu will change and not on a busy night, so i can participate in quiet, uninterrupted conversation with my fellow diners.

Boyfriend and I got the prix fixe so that we could try each of the two appetizers and each of the two entrees.

    Appetizers:
-mixed autumn greens: good, but felt the "Herb Vinaigrette" was too heavy and creamy, overpowering the other toppings. The squash croutons weren't so much croutons as they were some squash cubes...
-PEI mussels: loved this dish. Larger-than expected portion, and the lemony and orangey-curry broth was delicious. Tasted light for a curry dish! However, who doesn't serve bread/crouqettes with mussels? We had to request it...

    Entrees:
-Pork chop with "ginger-sweet potato puree" -- omg, one bite of the "ginger puree" tasted like I bit down into an entire ginger root. I couldn't eat it. I had to switch with my boyfriend. He seemed to like it (huge fan of ginger, I guess), but that with the bits of raw onions in the "pineapple mango salsa" was just too much... Every spoonful of that puree was like eating a piece of ginger root.
-Trout: served with "haricot verts" (aka, string beans) served in a creamy brown butter sauce. The fish was cooked perfectly, beans were nice and crunchy, and the rock shrimp was a nice touch. However, the sauce was a little too heavy to be served without something to cut through the butter. I asked for slices of lemon to balance it out, and it was perfect after that.

    Desserts:
    -Creme brulee: good
-Apple bread pudding: delicious. Recommended dessert.

This was our second time back. Portions for all dishes were generous and the atmosphere was nice. First time, our server was a little snobby, but this time, server and host were both very friendly, as were their back servers. The runner was a bit strange as he set down the dishes with a slightly confused look on his face each time. Maybe he was new. I'm very "eh" with this place... Nothing special, but it's a good option to splurge on locally.

I have been here once for Restaurant Week about a year ago and was disappointed with my meal. It was definitely what I ordered because everyone else enjoyed their meal. I hate judging a restaurant based on Restaurant Week but at the same time, it says a lot. I've heard a lot about their Cuban sandwich and was finally able to try it, if it wasn't for Groupon.

My boyfriend and I trekked over one night. We decided to sit in the bar and luckily there were seats available. Service at the bar is nothing to rave about but was a little slow. To start my boyfriend ordered a lemonade cocktail and myself a mojito. I can't seem to get enough of mojitos lately. So refreshing! The lemonade wasn't bad but I really enjoyed the mojito. For our meal, I settled on the Cuban sandwich and my boyfriend settled on the red snapper filet that's steamed in a banana leaf with coconut rice and shrimp-mango escabeche.

I haven't eaten enough cuban sandwiches to really make a comparison to but I really enjoyed it. It was meaty and the bread was flavorful. Nicely pressed. I think it could have used a little more pickles for contrasting flavor but definitely a good sandwich. It came with a side of fried plantains and some greens. The fried plaintains were awesome. Lightly salted, thin, and crispy. I could eat a bag of those!

The highlight of the nice was the red snapper. While the fish was good, the coconut rice was amazing! Rich, creamy, citrus-y (lime juice), and full of coconut flavor. I couldn't stop eating it. The flavors went together perfectly. A wonderful dish. The only thing that bugged us was that a woman next to us ordered the same thing. Ate everything BUT the rice. The server asked if she wanted to pack it up but said no. I nearly flipped out. I would've taken it home myself. What a waste! But since then, I've tried making the rice at home without success. I'm going to keep trying!

Without the Groupon, it would've been a pricey dinner. However, because what we ordered was good, I think I'll be back. I could definitely go for another bowl of that coconut rice!

Chez Henri is so so.  Atmosphere was really nice, somewhat Tardis-ish looking quaint and small from the outside, rather large on the inside, this added to the charm I thought and was one of the reasons I chose it for dinner.

Overall though, I don't know that I would return, I may return to the bar and and get the mythical Cuban sandwich others have recommended and perhaps the cuban fries, which were spiced just right and very good.  But with other options in the Boston/cambridge area I just didn't feel the restaurant made the grade and a mid-high priced restaurant.

The atmosphere makes you think of a nice restaurant, with quality food that would leave you wanting a little more.  I felt that they shot for quantity not quality, which would be good at a lower price point in a chain place, but the food did not match the ambiance and that was a major turn off.

The food was definitely priced higher than it's quality, but you do get a lot of it.  I had the Steak Frites, and didn't finish the fries.  This could be because you do get a lot, or it could be that for my appetizer I had the cuban fries which I highly recommend.  But either way, large portions, mediocre quality certainly not worth the 31 dollars.

I would stay away from the salads as well, definitely not worth the price and the lettuce was soggy and bland, as if it had been sitting in it's sauce for quite a while.

Also, and my largest complaint, is the fact that Chez Henri has the worst by glass wine menu I have experienced in a long time.  I hate to be harsh but the wine list was horrific, and what they had by the bottle was so overpriced that I almost just stuck with water.  I did however try the pinot noir, which was tasteless and bitter.  So if you want to get a good meal either be prepared to pay a massive hike on a bottle, or prepare to drink well wine by the glass.  As an example, someone at our table wanted a Riesling, it was 50 dollars a bottle.  For a mid-low range Riesling this is just distasteful, or perhaps preying on people that may not know they are getting a 10 dollar bottle of wine for 50.

When I commented that the wine list was somewhat horrific and asked if they perhaps had other by the glasses they had listed, the waitress commented that others had complained of the same thing and that no, they had what was on the menu.  Big fail for a place like this in my opinion.

    My likey likes:

Great atmosphere, and great staff.  Our waitress was as attentive as she could be and very friendly.  And the Cuban fries were excellent.

My two biggest complaints would be:

    1.  For the ambiance and price of the place you would expect great food.  This just didn't happen, I kept thinking to myself that for a third of the price I could have done twice the job with my foreman grill and mini fryer sitting at home.

    2.  Overpriced wine by the bottle, and no real selection of it by the glass.  So if you want wine with your meal prepare to be price gauged or prepare to swill back table wine.

Too bad, the place really has charm, I would have loved to have found a nice place to bring out of towners.

    First experience at Chez Henri.

Started with a mojito, which was excellent -- best I have had since Gato Negro in New Orleans.

We chose to order multiple starters in place of any entrees: the mussels, the ceviche, the corn chowder, the oysters, and the arepas.

Interesting how so many things we ordered noted specific ingredients or elements, yet those exact elements were buried in the dish, and in some cases completely unnoticeable.

The saffron mussels tasted mostly of smoked bacon -- they were quite good, but there was no saffron to be found.

The Honduran ceviche indicated it contained coconut, and while we thought we could see some in the dish, it was completely indistinguishable.

Again, not to say the food was bad in any way -- it just seemed odd that such strong flavors were advertised but not present.

Overall, the food was good, but overpriced for what they delivered on. We had no complaints, but nothing that truly wowed us.

Service was average -- when we asked for bread to go with the mussels, they explained that their daily Iggy's bread delivery failed to arrive. However, they could provide us with sandwich bread. We obliged -- but did not understand why they wouldn't mention this to all patrons, as we looked around and saw none had bread on their table despite it being customary.

The waitress also decided to circle the "tip on the total cost" note of the printed Groupon -- one of tackier moves I have seen in some time.

We hope to return someday -- but only to the bar, for more mojitos and to try the famed Cuban.

Chez Henri is overpriced given the quality of food, level of service, and overall dining experience.

Our dishes were ok but not great which I think is unacceptable given they were more than $30. I ordered the Steak Frites and received a terrible cut that contained a significant amount of gristle.

There was no pacing to the meal. The appetizers arrived less than 2 minutes after we ordered. At least fake it and give me the impression that things are made-to-order! A busboy then attempted to clear the dishes away while we were still eating (about 5 minutes after the appetizers arrived). We had to firmly tell multiple servers that we were not done yet. Conversely, after we finished our entrees, no one arrived to clear them away until a solid 10 minutes after we'd placed them to the side.

The main server was friendly and did remove the steak from the bill given that the cut was terrible. However, she couldn't describe any of the items on the menu and just kept saying "it was all good" when we inquired about different characteristics of the dishes.

The saving grace of the meal was the excellent bottle of pinot.

I won't be going back to Chez Henri's given that there are similarly priced restaurants which do offer excellent food and dining experience - AND places that offer similar quality for 1/3 of the price.

I know nothing of the menu in the restaurant. I'm sure it's pretty good.

I came here with a mission, however.  Well, a mission and a Groupon and my awesomely spectacular girlfriend.

My focus was on one thing and one thing only: The Cuban sandwich.  Until I saw the ceviche appetizer, which I focused on enough to scarf down and thoroughly enjoy.

Good drinks as well.  The mojito was a bit too limey for my taste but still went down very smoothly.  Too smoothly in fact, which is exactly what a mojito should do.

The only downside was that they had soft-shell crabs on the specials board.  Somehow we did not see this giant chalkboard as we walked in and no one in the restaurant mentioned it until we heard a waitress talking about it as we were eating dessert.  My girlfriend without a doubt would have been feasting on crab.  She was disappointed about this.

Back to The Mission.  This plays knows how to do a Cuban.  Any sandwich that is crispy, porky, pickle-y and leaves my fingers smeared with a think layer of butter is a giant bundle of tastiness.

The steak frites were unreal.  The steak was prepared medium *perfectly*; such a beautiful cut of meat.  And the chimichurri sauce on it had such a unique flavor.  There were a few different flavors going on on the plate, actually, and it made for a truly delicious meal.  I absolutely have to come back here; although the menu is somewhat small, the steak made such a lasting impression on me that I can't imagine being disappointed with a different choice.

Just got back from our first meal at Chez Henri and I am very very angry at myself. I'm angry because having lived in Porter Sq. for 3+ years, we have always intended to try out Chez Henri but have not until now.

The food is spectacular. Spectacular! And the wine and cocktail list are a great addition. The service was also very smooth, non-intrusive and friendly.

The menu changes regularly but we mostly stuck to seafood. The mussels with Serrano ham were some of the best I've had for a while. The sweetbreads over a salad with nuts, apples and a perfect vinaigrette were also delicious.

I had a cod fillet on a bed of swiss char, zuccini, lobster, poletna and onions. It was perfect. Everything tasted tender as if it were braised but had a finish of the grill. My husband's artic char was also executed just right, with a crispy skin and moist meat. I will definitely come back! Heck, even the butter served with bread tasted extra creamy.
Portions are ample and did not leave room for desert but I would love to try some desert later as they sounded great.

See you soon Chez Henri and sorry for not stopping by earlier.

This place has no parking.  I drove around for 15minutes there was no parking on the street or parking lot.  I have no choice but to park at the permit parking around 8:30pm.  I spoke to woman at the place she doe not know if they giving ticket that late at night.  She said the parking ticket is $20.00.  So, I did not move my car and I got a ticket for $30.00.  My niece told me She could not find any parking space last time when she ate at Chez Heri and that was her last time.  This is my last time too.  The food was good the service was a C.  We had to wait 15minutes for the bread and the wait staff to take our order.

I took the old ball and chain to Chez Henri during restaurant week (I open up the wallet for my Brazilian mistress) because many claimed this spot is overpriced. I figured I would give this place a shot at a discount. And boy, I'm glad I did.

The night didn't start off well as the host had a very classy sweater on. Actually, his whole outfit was classy. I am used to being the best dressed male wherever I go, and this man clearly saw the name on the reservation and showed me up. Well played, Mauer. So, I was a bit salty as he sat us down and made some kind of comment that suggested he was probably gay. Matheus +1. In any event, our waitress was extremely pleasant. I sensed she was attracted to me and gave her my most seductive 2 second gaze, which I followed up by ordering the most manly drink on the menu, a whiskey smash. It ended up being a poor choice to pair with the entree, but she loved it and it drove my battle-axe girlfriend loco.

But lets take a break from my sexiness and talk about the food. It was phenomenal. The appetizer was some sweet and salty sausage that blew my socks off. The entree was a second whiskey smash and a lamb stew that I would've drank out of the bowl had I not been seducing my waitress. The desert was a chocolate something that caused me to literally fist pump, very wildly.

The one thing that sucks besides that well-dressed clown at the front is the location. We had to park about a quarter of a mile away on a Tuesday. But make no mistake about it kiddies, this place worth the little extra you shell out.

I write this with a heavy hand and struggle between and 2 and a 3!   I wanted to like this place so much more. I really did.  I went to dinner with a friend around 7:00 on a Tuesday evening.  I will say our server was incredibly friendly ( Monique) and very helpful.   I got the price fix meal and my friend had a great appetizer and Steak. I will say the food was very good. However I thought it was incredibly over prices.  Neither of us had any alcohol and our bill was over $100.

The decor was old and clearly needs to be replaced.
We sat at one of those tables that was a chair on one side and bench on the other. all around me were holes that were covered up with RED tape.
The entire row as all taped up.  It looked like an hold couch in a college dorm.  Then the back of my bench which was against the wall, The entire top was COVERED in DUST.  I felt like I should have gone in back and gotten a damp cloth to clean it.  It might be worth the investment to get new chairs!!

Its food. the place should be clean.  I was very disappointed. If you are going to spend over $100 for 2 people- you want to know its a clean spot.

Now the server was great as I mentioned and no one likes SLOW service but the service was so super fast that we actually felt rushed. we had our appetizers in less than 2 minutes and our meal in 5.   I just felt like it could have been spaced out a little more so we can digest.

Eh.  I came in with a groupon and was immediately seated in the dining room on a Friday at 6 pm.  I love the atmosphere.  It's very comfortable and chic.

The service was attentive at first.  We ordered the quail appetizer to start.  The app was definitely big enough for two people and was absolutely delicious.  It gave me false hope that my entree would be just as good.  The quail was so flavorful and it paired well with the beets and grapefruit in the salad.

I ordered the sea scallops special for my entree.  The scallops were cooked perfectly, but the sauce it came in was overwhelmingly citrus-ey.  And the glass noodles it was served with were kind of a bizarre addition to the dish.  I wasn't a huge fan.  My fiance ordered the steak frites.  The steak was really fatty and the "frites" were serviceable.

On top of the average dinners, our entrees took about 40 minutes to come out and the food was too expensive for what it was.  I probably won't be back.

I came here last night with a friend for dinner.  She had a Groupon that was set to expire in six days and so we decided to go.  She had been there before and said it was really good so I had high expectations. However, for a $30 dinner I expect it to be cooked perfect.  we both ordered steak.  i ordered medium and she ordered medium rare.  Unfortunately, both of ours were more well done.  In addition to the steak, the french fries looked like they were going to be delightfully crispy but instead were kind of limp.  Now, I order steak medium because I know restaurants tend to cook it a little extra and I don't mind medium well to well.  My friend, however, actually prefers medium rare.  She didn't complain because she had been eating it for a bit so I suppose we could have tried to fix.  Th sauce on the steak was tasty, however.

I wanted to be impressed and was prepared to be wowed but if a dinner for 2 costs $100 I want really delicious food that is prepared the way I asked.

Great meal every time. I've been before for their famous and delicious Cuban sandwiches in the bar area, and the goat cheese arepas, which sell themselves, and live up to expectations.

Last time I went and wanted a light meal to escape the heat.  We started with the ceviche which was cool, refreshing, plentiful and pleasant along with the corn bisque.  The soup was not too hot, it is on their menu during the summer after all, and was creamy and tasty.

For the main we split the scallop special with quinoa and asparagus. WOW were those scallops good! everything was fresh and delicious accompanying the dish.

Very good service as well.  Great restaurant.

I woke up the morning of our reservation, and it was with sudden relief that I realized that it was a Sunday.  Hopefully with the possibility of resident permit only parking spots, EXCEPT for SUNDAYS, we had a chance at an easier parking experience than many of their customers have had...

Chez Henri is located on a small cross street from Mass Avenue, between Harvard Square and Porter Square, where there's a Starbucks on the corner, same block as the Berryline on Mass Ave.  It is on the left side, when you are heading away from the Charles River.

As a large party seated at two tables served by different waiters, we had varying experiences.  My table was pleased by the service provided by our server, well, until it came to dessert.  The other table felt a bit rushed by their server.

The bread service consisted of cold chewy slices of bread with pats of chilled butter - spreadable, and the bread was able to handle it, but still...

I was considering the $39 prix fixe.  I immediately noticed that the menu presented to us did not match what I had spotted online.  Yes, while the fish entree was still available, the french onion soup was MIA.  I considered the mussels, and asked if the red curry would make it spicy.  I was told not really, but once I revealed that I was a spice wimp, our server decided that spice was relative, so let's call it spicy.

Yes, he scared me off of ordering the Sautéed P.E.I Mussels with Red Curry-Coconut Milk & Grilled Crôut myself, but fortunately my tablemates had no such fear.  The mussels were great - tender and meaty - and the sauce was yummy and not considered spicy even by me.  We even dipped bread into the sauce to further enjoy it.  The day's special clams and chorizo app was good too, but the clams were tougher than the mussels, so I preferred the mussels by a wide margin.

I had the Pan Seared Long Island Duck Breast with Wild Mushroom Spätzle, Winter Greens and Orange-Pomegranate Glaze $30 medium rare as recommended by the chef.  While tasty, unfortunately the meat was chewy and the skin not crispy the way I like it.  However, while mushroom-lover I am not, I really liked the wild mushroom spätzle accompaniment.  The flavor and the textures were enjoyable as it was soft yet chewy where the dumpliings had been browned.  Those who ordered their duck medium were happy with their choice, while the other who had medium rare decided that the quality of the duck wasn't high enough to handle this preparation, and found the dish too sweet.

As for other dishes ordered at the table, I enjoyed my taste of the Trout Meuniere with Shrimp Beurre Noisette, Haricot Vert & Pomme Puree ($27 a la carte), and regret not having ordered it in place of my duck, but the protein of the other entree offered in the Prix Fixe - Skirt Steak a la Plancha Orange-Ancho Chile Jus, Manchego Potato Gratin & Green Bean-Jicama Salsa - was deemed flavorless by the diner, with the best part being the scalloped potato.

For a bit of something sweet to end the meal, I ordered the Vanilla Panna Cotta with Mango Coulis and Coconut Macaroon $8, which arrived in a pool of raspberry sauce and was missing the macaroon.  Our table agreed that if a listed ingredient was replaced that the kitchen should really let us know.  What if there was an allergy involved!  Or what if we just plain didn't like raspberry?

When we had the chance, we pointed out the clearly missing cookies from our two orders of the panna cotta, and were appeased by the presentation of an entire plate of the treat.  The macaroons were chewy sweet and yummy, although they were in the oven a touch too long, resulting in a very deep tan.  These were enjoyed by the entire table.  Props were also offered for the coconut ice cream.

The menu on their website could do with some updating, as not only was the prix fixe inaccurate, but the prices were a little off too (ie. the duck was $30 but was listed as $29 online).

The group concensus however was that the bar knew what it was doing - great mojitos! - and we should go back to order the famed cubano sandwich off the bar menu sometime.

Don't come here for just drinks! Chez Henri is NOT a cocktail bar.

It's Tuesday, March 15, 2011. My roommate wants to go out for a few drinks with friends at Chez Henri. It's his birthday. We're a party of 7. The time is 9:30 pm.

After our arrival, the hostess seats us at 2 tables and provides us with both a dinner and cocktail menu. We inform her that we're there just for drinks. She frowns at us and insists that we must order food. "Chez Henri is NOT a cocktail bar," she says. We must order food if we wish to sit at a table, and if food is ordered it can't just be a mere "two empanadas." In addition, she says that we prevent those waiting in line from being seated and ordering food. (There were only 2 people in line at the door. They were seated within minutes after they arrived. Also, we would have sat at the bar, but it was full).

We protest. I tell her it's my friend's birthday. We then compromise. She reluctantly agrees to "violate restaurant policy" and let us occupy only one table if we are to order solely drinks. Two minutes later she returns with a waitress and reneges on her word. She says that if we wish to stay seated, we must order food.

We all look each other, grab our coats, and leave.

Chez, you make my heart go pitter-patter and my stomach go, "SCREW THE GYM, there's bouillabaisse on the menu!".

The mojitos here are like David Beckham gazing at you from the pages of Vogue in Armani underwear. So deliciously satisfying. I would bed it. They're that good. And a perfect compliment to the flavor-packed dishes.

I started with the ceviche, which was incredible--I think I licked that bowl clean. Moved on to the bouillabaisse--chock full of savory shellfish and spices. It's hearty and does quite the job on the taste buds. Finished off with a trio of refreshing sorbet. I pretty much devoured every crumb and sugar on all three dishes and left feeling like a major fatty (the good kind).

Three words shall conclude my review: NOM NOM NOM.

YUM YUM YUM. It my and my friend's first time dining at Chez Henri and we were thoroughly impressed. The service was great - Jason took wonderful care of us! The food was incredible - we had the crab special appetizer, the gnocchi (YUM!) and the scallops special. The drinks and dessert were fantastic as well. We couldn't stop talking about how terrific it was and we tend to be pretty picky/critical.

Chez Henri is one of my favorite places to go on a late night in Porter Square. I have gone twice (both times to the bar) and will definitely be back. The Cuban was highly recommended and is a definite must have. It is very easily the best I've had in Boston...though I will admit I hardly ever order sandwiches for dinner or at restaurants. Still, it is worth the special visit to Porter Square.

On our last visit, we were also pleasantly surprised by the mussels---specifically the red curry-coconut milk they were served in. We could not have enough. We dipped our mussels, bread, and Cuban in the soup until almost  every drop was gone.

Though a little dark, I enjoyed the casual atmosphere at the bar and was delighted with the service. Prices are about average for Boston, but are      pretty fair given the large portions.

What a disappointing evening. I'd heard such great things about this restaurant, and after struggling to find parking on a rainy Tuesday evening, I was hoping for a nice, enjoyable, relaxing meal. Unfortunately, our service was so slow and the food so underwhelming that I left thinking this Cambridge establishment was both overrated and overpriced.

I started with the pea soup, which was both bland and too hot, ensuring I'd start off my meal with little promise of things to come. I'd truly hoped the soup would set a good tone for the evening, considering the cold rain that had fallen all day. Instead, I regretted wasting the $10 on such a disapponting item.

Next came the pan-seared duck breast. The duck itself was excellently-cooked, flavorful, and moist. Upon tasting the duck, my regret lessened, if only slightly. Unfortunately, the items accompanying the duck did it no favors. The wild-mushroom spätzle was wholly devoid of flavor and added absolutely nothing to the dish. The attendant greens, including arugula, swiss chard, and a spicy green pepper, added little of note (including flavor) to the meal, so much so that I couldn't be bothered to finish them. The richness of the duck breast simply rendered useless the remaining items in this dish, a severe disappointment at $29.

As I mentioned, the extremely slow service we endured only accentuated the poor experience my meal provided, prolonging the agony of this evening. Tired after a long day at work, I simply wanted to go home and relax, but our absent waiter was determined to keep us long after we'd finished our entrees and declined dessert. After paying, I was left wondering how much of the bill covered operating expenses for their Mass. Ave location, and how much went towards food; based on my experience, the former severly shortchanged the latter.

I've been to Chez Henri probably 7 or 8 times, and always sat in the bar area. Why? The Cuban sandwich is so good that I'm afraid to miss out on it by sitting in the dining room! Yes, I have ordered the Cuban sandwich every single time I've come to Chez Henri. It's that good. It combines thinly sliced ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and a delicious mustard sauce on crunchy yet soft bread. It's accompanied by crispy and sweet plantain chips and a tasty salsa. It's just perfect.

Incidentally, I have a Junior League of Boston cookbook with Chez Henri's Cuban sandwich recipe in it, and once spent an entire Saturday roasting pork in the hopes that I could bring this masterpiece home. Alas, my version was but a shadow of the real thing.

I have tried other dishes here as well, mainly as a consequence of having friends and family less terrified of a Cuban sandwich-less meal at Chez Henri. The grilled chorizo, and particularly the creamy mashed potatoes with which it's served, is pretty darn good.

The cocktails are also standout. The mojito is easily the best version of that cocktail I've had, and it's very consistent in quality. I've also tried the Periodista (Triple Sec, Apricot Brandy, Rum, Lime Juice, Shaken and Served with a Twist of Lime) and a tequila cocktail whose name escapes me; both were good, but don't compare to the mojito. The wine list at Chez Henri is also decent, with bottle prices averaging around $30. A selection of beers are offered on draft, but I've never had the beer at Chez Henri and can't speak to the quality of their offerings.

Oh, and finally--I have never had a reservation at Chez Henri, but I've also never waited more than 10 minutes for a table. Now, I tend not to pop in on Saturday nights or times I know they'll be busy, but even so, I'm impressed at how quickly I am usually able to find a seat in the bar at this small and popular restaurant. It makes me like the place that much more.

One day, maybe I will sit in the dining room at Chez Henri and try something other than the Cuban sandwich. But I doubt it. It's just too good.

Overpriced and pretentious (been there twice and won't be going back.) The Cuban sandwich is pretty good though.

We went there last Saturday night for my birthday, at the recommendation of friends who love the place. It was our first time there. There was a wait even for bar seating- but we were seated at the bar after about 25 minutes. Every time the door opened and closed- we were in a direct draught; a heavy curtain would go a long way as the small tables near the door were experiencing the same issue. We had the cerviche, the swordfish and the boullibase. The food was excellent BUT the service was terrible. There was one bartender for the whole place- which was full- and he didn't have any personality. We were not served bread until we requested it & our dirty plates sat before us for quite some time before they were cleared. Honestly- the lack of servce and interaction ruined the experience and we left right after dinner- when we typically linger and drink. I wouldn't rush back.
