5 reviews for Chevy's Fresh Mex
In an area where there isn't a wide selection of Mexican restaurants, Chevy's is a great option. Yes, it is a chain restaurant but it's a good one. When I lived in Lawrenceville I'd go here quite often for happy hour or for dinner. During my recent visit to NJ I met a friend here for happy hour which was great because they had just started a new one which consisted of select $3 appetizers and $1 off drinks which aren't very expensive to begin with. I got a small margarita which was not small at all. We also shared some appetizers; wings, fajita nachos and my personal favorite, the spicy flautas. They were as delicious as I remember them and for $3 they tasted even better. ;)
Another one of my favorite things about Chevy's is their salsa. I'm not a huge fan of chips and salsa but their's are great and if they weren't free I would actually pay for them
The service here is always good and there isn't usually a wait unless you go there on the weekend.
After shopping today, Kevin and I went to Chevy's for lunch. We usually sit in the bar and always enjoy the personal attention the bartenders give us. The food today was especially yummy and very well priced. We love their chips and salsa. I know Chevy's is a chain but we always seem to have a good experience here. I'm not sure why all the bad reviews but I've never been disappointed by the food or service.
This is one of the worst dining experiences we've ever had. We actually left mid-way through the meal after having a conversation with the manager, who told us we didn't have to pay because the service was so atrocious.
First of all, the hostess was incredibly rude and led us to a table that was dirty. She very huffily wiped it down and stalked off.
Then, the waitress came over and very rapid-fire went over the specials. We could barely understand her and she was definitely not pausing to answer any questions or have any discussion beyond her surly recording of our orders.
After that, I tried to flag her down several times about refilling my drink (or at least getting the order for my drink right, since it wasn't) and I couldn't get her attention to save my life. I finally got up and went to the kitchen to try and get someone to help me. I asked someone else to help us and told her we were having a lot of trouble getting service.
I also noticed that other people in the restaurant were having an equally hard time -- no one would come take their orders, their food was being slammed down on the table by surly servers, etc.
After waiting for a very long time, the food arrives and it had obviously been sitting under heat lamps -- it was limp, lukewarm, and the rice was dry as a bone. That was it for us. You can put up with a few things not working out, but when you get that many strikes, that's it. Get up and leave. We saw the manager and had a conversation with him about what we had experienced, and he told us not to worry about the bill, and that it was okay to leave.
I wish we had a better tex-mex place in the area!
I went here once, about a month ago, for a co-worker's 10th Anniversary luncheon. When he picked Chevy's as the Restaurant of choice I was looking forward to it, as I used to go to a Chevy's in my old neighborhood in San Diego on occasion and always loved it.
So a group of about 20 go for lunch, and the place wasn't very busy. The interior was the typical Mexican restaurant decor, but almost to the point of cheesy. I didn't care, I was there for carnitas, which is my favorite dish at Chevy's, or at least was until this day. Normally the pork is served very tender, very juicy, and makes for great fajitas. It's one of those things where you say "it just melts in your mouth." What they brought out to me was charred, tough pork. Charred, meaning black-burnt-to-a-crisp charred over at least 40 - 50% of each piece of pork. I couldn't even eat it all (something you never hear me say) and enjoyed none of what I did eat. I almost asked the waiter about it, except I noticed two of my colleagues ordered the same and got the same char'd-nitas, so I figured that must be how they do it here, or if it was a mistake, they sure didn't mind serving this mess to all of us. I might have complained, but I didn't want to make a big deal about it and ruin my friend's luncheon.
I'll never go back. It was more than a poor representation of authentic Mexican, it was a poorly prepared meal by any standard, and that's being nice. Nothing saved the meal, the beans were blah, and the scoop of sweet corn goodness that I always love at the end of the meal wasn't even as flavorful as I recalled from past experience. Maybe the char'd-nitas severed my taste buds.
On this day, I truly missed San Diego.
Prefer the chain restaurant "On the Border" to this restaurant any day.
I was a HUGE fan and frequent customer of the previous establishment Casa Lupita's..
If you're looking for Mexican go just a bit further North on Route 1 or go to Princeton.
Chevy's not so fresh and sadly not so good either.
