Bay Area
I like the quietness.
I like how I can feel invisible and just do my work. This isn't a place where you feel self-conscious, like at Blue Danube.
I like the beautiful wood bar, which is never crowded.
I like my cappuccino, which has foam you could sleep on.
I like their Republic of Tea tea.
I like that Kara's Cupcakes is a short walk away. I'd like a morgue if it were near Kara's Cupcakes.
I like the free wifi, no code, no nothin'.
They are frequently out of toliet paper.
I don't like that.
There's a stocked closet nearby, I just get it myself.
They have a credit card minimum.
I don't like that.
They seriously enforce it, too.
I had to buy something I didn't even want, just so I could have my cappuccino.
A hostage situation in a coffee shop.
I didn't like that.
I think the employees are nice, not very friendly, but good enough. One woman seems consistently unhappy, but she's not rude. -
Review from Peter C.
Solid coffee shop! I'm a black coffee guy so have little appreciation for most coffee shops' laundry list of -iato's and -esso's. The Roastery had not only the specialty blends, but also dozens of roasts to choose from which was pretty cool (though I doubt I'm connoisseur enough to taste difference!).
The venue was super chill and the service was terrific. Has a very local feel to it. Definitely exactly what I want from my neighborhood coffee shop!
Cool sidenote: the bean press in the back looks like it's 100 years old but still works! -

Vanilla latte!!!
i was a little early to work, and decided to leech wifi from a coffee shop. starbucks just did not look too inviting and they have been not giving me enough caramel in my caramel macchiato, so i decided to come back to this place.
i ordered a vanilla latte with regular milk per staff recommendations of "something sweet." they were so friendly and very helpful in my coffee-naive decision. i can tell they make their customers feel like family. they know the regulars by name, and they call everyone brother, sister, or in my case: little girl.
THE VANILLA LATTE WAS AMAZING....perfectly sweet and soooo smooth. i enjoyed it for that full half an hour. i was totally wired when i went to work though. my hands kept shaking, i kept dropping things, and i needed to use the facilities a lot. thats how you know how awesome . their coffee is definitely stronger than that watered down stuff served at starbucks.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Huge space. Too quiet for me. Coffee was good quality. I would take a cup of Peet's over this place any day.

I used to like this place but when they had to increase their prices during the Christmas holiday I had to start going somewhere else. I feel they are greedy to raise their prices when they really didn't need to. Plus having to spend so much to use a credit card is all about greed too.

I may be white, but I speak Chinese. Don't be ignorant, and respect the local people that support your business and give you jobs and money to feed your families, and prevent you from collecting cans on the streets.
I just had a VERY rude Asian woman tell me " we already close", 10 minutes before closing time, and then one of her Asian friends who is sitting in the store say something derogatory about me and my guest in Mandarin, not knowing that I speak Chinese.
I will not support any disrespectful, racist business owners and neither should you! I'll be sure to tell everyone I know...

Came here after a race a few weeks ago and was absolutely impressed by the coffee. My sis and I love our coffee and lattes and this place didn't disappoint! The staff were overall nice, but the owner is who made the lasting impression. He was very friendly and took time to explain to us about the various beans and the roasting which is done on-site. Sure wish this place was closer to us, mmm good!

Review from Cherie S.
This café is quiet and it is easy to get a table because the coffee sucks. Yes, Coffee Roastery is big and spacious. The ambiance is nice, but the coffee simply isn't good.
I admit, I'm a coffee snob--but if you claim to be a roaster...don't serve burned coffee to your customers. I tried a few different coffees and they were all blah. I expect this level of coffee from a crap diner, not a roaster. Skip this coffee shop. (But if you do come here, check out the old grinder in the back.) -

It is my local haunt. They have great breakfast foods and pastries. All of which are pretty damn tasty and hard to choose from. I love their hot coco and my friends say that they make good coffee. So what If i don't drink it, I ask!
Free wi-fi, great seats and old school feel with a very chill atmosphere. A great place to study and in the quieter part of Chestnut. They have a good coffee bar that I love the smell of. Best of all the people are really sweet. -
Review from carlos a.
Honestly, I go here because it's the only place on Chestnut where you can go at ANY time and find a table, free wi-fi and it isn't a scene of people looking to mingle and be seen.
Food and drinks are decent but come here for the space and peace and quiet. Wifi is free for 2 hours. -

This is the best all-around coffee spot in San Francisco, hands down.
Not only is the coffee always bold and tasty, but the customer service is top notch. In particular, they're very nice to squatters (like myselft) that go through a big stack of newspapers and check email while I drink my coffee.
They also have a nice selection of healthy (and not so healthy, but super tasty) side dishes. My wife and I always share a giant oat bar while I supplement with fresh fruit and hard boiled eggs.
Lastly, it's one of the few coffee spots with a high quality bar area, perfect for people like me who prefer to stand. -

Wow. Even with the other reviews, I was not prepared for how bad my coffe was! I ordered a cappuccino, but ended up with 1/2 a cup of burt tasting watery espresso and 1/2 super thick milk foam that was sitting on the top. It was pretty un-drinkable.
Would be a one star, but I had a decent breakfast burrito, it was reasonably priced, and great to use the internet without feeling like I was taking up space. However, I think I'll look for another cafe next time I'm in the area. -

Solid local haunt, lots of space, used to come here frequently.
Lots of people moving through, table layout is not super good for meeting, but really enjoyed it one my way to work and back.
Coffee and pastry's are average, its more of an easy place to crash with a laptop then a place to go out of your way for.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I'm still new to the Marina District, so I thought to myself... what better way to get to break the ice than to grab some coffee?
It was busy on a Sunday afternoon but there were plenty of seats because the space is bigger than most cafes. I ordered a house coffee with one of those oatmeal chucks of who-knows-what's-in-there and sat down with my brand new book from Green Apple. The service was great. The workers are friendly and although they have an order every minute, they greet every single person with a smile.
I sat and read in the corner for an hour, and it was so nice and relaxing. Being that it was huge, I wasn't distracted by side convos or other people talking to one another. The only con is that they have one restroom to accommodate for men and women, which means you always have to wait in lines.
Aside from that, Chestnut offers great coffee in a warm, inviting cafe! -

I swung by this place while waiting for Simply Cuts to open for my twice a month buzz cut. I haven't had coffee for almost a year, but I busted my nut again about a week ago. Hence Chestnut Street Coffee Roastery was another great place for such great pleasures. I forgot how yummy coffee tasted, especially when it is done right. And dab nabbit - Chestnut is really goodIII Very chill and lots of tasty treats :)
If you are chillin in the Marina wanting a coffee fix, swing by and enjoy a great cup of joe and free internet!!! -

Since I work remotely a lot, I'm always on the lookout for good coffee shops to work from. I've been getting tired of going somewhere only to discover there isn't a table to sit at, a place to plug in my laptop, or if there is, the wifi is spotty, there's strange music playing, or the coffee / food is disappointing.
Thankfully, there is Coffee Roastery. Let's review the perks:
Free wifi
Decent coffee
Snacks and larger munchies (e.g., burritos)
Not too crowded
Friendly staff (they let me bring in a cupcake from That Takes the Cake just down the street to have with my coffee!)
Plus, there's this really cool big red old-school coffee roasting/brewing/grinding (?) machine by the window! -

I LOVE this coffee shop and it is one of my favorites in the city! I have been coming here for over six years and those who know me, know I am obsessed with good coffee shops and will hunt until I find my favorite!
They have great coffee, really good spicy chai, a wide variety of food (sweet and savory), free wi-fi (major perk!), plenty of seats and they are super accommodating -- if you tell them what you want, they will make it! I love coffee, but if you like chai, ask for a mocha-chai (white or dark)..chocolately and spicy - they used to make amazing ones!
Most importantly, San, his wife and the staff who run the Roastery are amazing! They know everyone who comes in and greet you with a smile everyday...After leaving the city for three years, I couldn't wait to come back here....and again, they welcomed me with a smile and by name - I was so surprised!
Would definitely recommend the Roastery and making it your staple if you live in the neighborhood! -

I stopped in twice to grab a quick cup of coffee.
The atmosphere was relaxing and the house coffee was delicious (French Roast, which I've never considered myself a fan of, was amazing) and their pumpkin cream-cheese cupcake put Starbucks's muffin to shame.
Plus it's not expensive- an awesome change-up to the slew of coffee houses in San Francisco. -
Review from Diane B.
Now that I got my power outlet to work, the 2-star "meh" is about right. Partially because I have to use an insecure open network as Roastery doesn't provide any. And there's more.
I stumbled upon this after needing to flee the bizarre rock noise at the usually peaceful Grove Cafe down the street (plus, they only apportion wifi based on what you spend - what's up with THAT? Note to append my other review...). All indications *seemed* good at The Roastery: I found a power outlet, it was airy & open, the accommodations were basic but ample... however, I was instantly greeted by an overly-concerned, smothery housekeeper warning me to "Be Careful!" with wide eyes as she was mopping the floor. I somehow felt this was more for their liability benefit than my personal security after this came a 2nd time, and later when she showed me the women's room but with great fear interjected that "someone is in there!!"
This all took me back to a bizarre sense of being scolded and didn't really get me feeling in the right space to hammer out that contract.
When I at last got set up (and finally figured out the power outlet), I inquired about my latte. Guess the gas-fills-up-the-space-available concept applied to the service, as the cashier totally forgot about my order despite there being 2 other (already-served) patrons in the establishment.
At least there's Mozart playing. That pacifies me in a better way than wifi, I s'pose.Listed in: Cafes: Offices of the 21st…

Good regular spot for coffee. They are open early and have plenty of seating. There are a variety of pastries to choose from, as well as Odwala drinks. This is a nice spot for a cup of good coffee while supporting a local business, instead of those other two brand name places down the street. Lots of regulars. A friend tells me that Robin Williams hangs out there. Too bad I didn't see him. I'll be back next time I am in the City.

Stopped by while on a shopping spree. Surprisingly large space with artsy ambiance including antique roasting equipment on display. Lots of laptoppers soaking up the wifi.
My macchiato was perfect, with just enough caffeine to wake me up for the drive home. If I lived closer to CSCR, I'd be a regular. Why even bother with the chains when you've got this gem in the heart of Chestnut? -

I was looking for a nice cafe in the Marina to get some work done.
I'd really enjoyed this place. It's huge for a cafe!
There are a good amount of tables, free WiFi, and yummy coffee.
The coffee was fairly well priced, $1.80 for a small cup.
They did give a to-go cup for your coffee even if you were staying, which I thought was weird. Save the paper!
WiFi was fast for a while, but then I noticed after a while it started acting up a bit. Not sure if it was just a coincidence or what.
The staff was fairly nice. They kind of just kept to themselves. They weren't too engaged while taking your order. This is the reason for the 4 star rating.
Other that that, I was very happy with my visit.
I will go back to this cafe and would recommend it to anyone. -

I came here waiting for my bf to get off of work around the corner....
I got an apple tart and a bottle of water.
I don't ever recall eating an apple tart before but it was kinda like eating a cold sliced apple with cinnamon on it...then shoved in a eggy type thing.
The bottle of water was one star and the warm protection from outside was the other star. lol. Coffee smelled good? -
Review from Gloria H.
3.5 stars but rounding up because it's not over crowded w/ the Marina crowd.
It's big, spacious with very tall ceilings and wall murals. It's comfortable but the seating in the front near the window is a bit odd. Service was friendly.
Hubby got a cappuccino and I got a latte. They were both served in this huge round mug. The foam on his was thicker than mine but surprisingly we both had just as much liquid. Mine was pretty good, better than many places but we still like Trieste best.
We also got a slice of the sun dried tomato quiche and crumb cake, The quiche was not bad with lots of veggie, would have been a lot better if it was heated up evenly - some bites were cold while others warm. The crust is a little soft. The crumb cake was a bit dry and the crumbs on top were too hard. -
Review from Cathy K.
It seems etiquette is a vanishing breed these days, so when I receive genuinely kind service with a thank you, it's especially memorable.
Coffee Roastery on Chestnut Street is one of these places. The staff is friendly, appreciative and helpful. Good vibe environs - high ceiling, nice aroma, lots of tables & chairs and wi-fi.
They offer robust coffees, Italian sodas, and other beverages. A tantalizing array of quiches, pastries, and other savories. A great place to spend a lazy or productive afternoon. -
Review from David B.
Huge and spacious!!!
My god, you could fit a whole army of coffee roasters in here. Not that you would of course but you could. I mean they have their own roasting machine in the back as well!
Soft music plays, you can surf the net for free, enjoy reading the paper and rest your feet from shopping on Chestnut. What more would you like? Ok, well they also have snack and pastries of the yummiest type as well. Every imaginable muffin, croissant, bagel or scone your tastebuds could possibly desire!
Temptation rears its tasty head!!!! I was bitten by it...will you be?Listed in: Coffee

I was excited about going here from seeing all these great reviews and it is right around the corner of my new, the first, SF apartment!
1 star for the ambiance. 4 stars less for, horrible attitude of the bitchy staff bitches, old/half rotten broccoli quiche, too pricey for the quality and the snobby vibe all around inside.
What the fuck was wrong with those bitches? Why serve half rotten food with attitude? The ham and cheese croissant was OK, but how hard is it to mess that up? Not so clean tea cups.
Everybody else seems to get warmer greetings from them bitches here. Was it because they have never seen us before? Thus, contributing to the snobby somewhat "you don't belong here" attitude? Forget you.
Guess another search for nicer cafe on Chestnut. I have to say that I'm liking that street. Washington Mutual in walking distance, sweet! -

I came here to study for finals and it's great. it's nice and quiet, and the wifi is great. I feel pretty comfortable just grabbing a coffee and using the internet. It wasn't like starbucks or peets where I feel like I'm hogging a seat just to use really slow internet.
Employees are really nice-- the asian guy is super adorable. -

Wonderfully cute coffee shop! Many locals here, the coffee is fresh and smells absolutely delicious...and taste pretty damn good too!! They have a large selection of coffees and teas for you to choose from, and small tables for you to choose from. The best ones are of course, by the window if your lucky enough to snag one. There is alo outdoor bench seating for those nice city days and people watching.
The service here is pretty great too!! Super friendly, i came in here for some coffee & to use their FREE wi-fi, snagged a seat and ordered my latte...and as I was at my table powering up my laptop, the cashier walked my latte over to me! Super nice. The people in here are friendly, smile at one another & the atmosphere is nice & unrushed. You don't feel like they are giving you the evil eye to pack up your shit and go.
Only thing i would say is a negative is the power outlets for the laptops are few and far inbetween...and they have the old school outlets where if you have the 3 prong power plug, your screwed. sorry =( -

San Francisco, CA
Contrary to what some people say I believe their service is always good (well, at least to me) and their coffee is pretty strong.
I used to have three jobs in the Marina/Presidio area, so picking up a cup of medium cappuccino was at Roastery was on the first thing I did every morning of weekdays.
Although I am not working in the area 16 hours a day like I used to, I go there pretty much every day to have either latte or cappuccino. Everybody remember I get either one of them! And yes they do remember my name. It is always good to know that they know me, because I feel like I'm a part of the rich Marina residents... (yeah me and my buddy pretend we live there) Anyhow, I love you guys!
Like I said I always get either latte or cappuccino. I mean, I'm addicted to strong espresso! Caffeine! But their coffee - different beans everyday - is very strong as well. Personally it feels much stronger than espresso from S-bucks. I tried their teas, too. I dunno which company they get those bags from, but they are good, too!
Although they don't have meal-meal except for bagel/creemcheese, they have a great variety of baked goods including quiches. I often get pumpkin cookies - lots of chocolate chips! Yummmmm.
When you are a coffee addict, imagine how you would feel when you walk in a nice neighborhood cafe and smell coffee beans just being roasted right in front of your eyes... AH! Can't wait to go back there tomorrow. -
Review from Bryan B.
One of the best coffee shops in the city, the staff are super friendly and the coffee always tastes good. The outdoor seating is great since you can bring a dog (if you have one) and just chill out.
I like that this coffee shop is close to the Presidio since it rarely gets too crowded compared to places further down Chestnut towards Fillmore. -
Review from Jamie L.
My boyfriend's friend's uncle owns this little piece of heaven in the Marina district of SF. Spacious and friendly service, how could anyone not want to come here?
Since there was no coffee for me to have, I settled for the Hot Chocolate Fantasia (Hazelnut flavor). To-die-for!! I could definitely come here everyday if I lived in the area. Now it's up to me to afford the million dollar SF homes to do so. -

AMAZING! I love the family that runs (owns?) this place. So friendly and cheerful no matter how early in the morning you get there. The coffee is so good that I generally always just get black coffee as opposed to the flavored lattes and what not I get from Starbucks, Peets, etc.
Good selection of pastries and baked goods too! -

Post dinner coffee time. Came here and loved the quiet feel of the place. They had classical music that echo'd the building and had a great ambiance in the room. I asked the lady what she liked making and she said " I don't know!" in a joking mannor. So! I ordered a regular mocha. Coffee was good, place was nice, and overall a great coffee shop! : )
