A very nice selection of cheeses ranging from about 10 kinds of cheddar to 15 kinds of gouda to lord only knows what. You can definitely smell the place a block away!
They also have a nice array of specialty products (spreads, godiva chocolate, fancy crackers, nuts, olives, etc). 4 stars just for the service which was incredibly friendly. I think we ended up trying at least three kinds of cheeses, and we didn't even get an exasperated sigh when we asked for a recommendation without giving any bounds or description of what we like!
YUMMY. I like the selection and the feel. The young man who prepared my order though was young and therefore not too familiar with the specifics of the cheeses. I got some lovely Morbier but he cut it such a way that the ashes were excluded. For those of you who like Morbier you know they are essential for the experience. (Jeesh I sound like a snob!) Well...its true.
I got Gruyere and some nice IOWA made Bleu cheese (Maytag) that stank to high heaven! Love it! Nothing is overly refrigerated so that it can't be eaten for hours. They handle the cheese the right way.
Lovely place to visit and try a bite or spend your paycheck.
aha! I went here yday on a beautiful day looking for some french cheese I sampled from the Old City Cheese Shop the day before, but of course I had no idea what the name was. The employees were very helpful and let me sample the goods and I wound up buying an equally tasty french cheese which was just as good. Still on the search for the queso in question, but I guess i'll have to keep an ongoing memo of my cheeses of choice!
Ahh...the cheese shop...one of the places I miss most since I no longer work in CH!! My favorite...some urgelia or parrano, a little spicy salami, a few olives and a crusty roll and I was in heaven!! Of course, Adam and his twisted sense of humor ('zactly like mine) made it all that much more yummy!! FYI, they make really wonderful gift baskets as well for the holidays. Really great selection of snacks and specialty foods as well!
Generally, if you walk into a wine store and you ask the clerk for a wine suggestion, he'll probably ask you a couple simple questions like what kind you like, what you're eating, etc. I love cheese, but if you ask me what I like, or what flavors I enjoy, I regrettably shrug my shoulders because I can't describe cheese like I can wine or beer or other fine eats. And surprisingly, when I shrugged my shoulders, they just started handing me samples of cheese, with no grumbles or stares, they were just happy to please! I tried a few, found one I liked, and went home and had fantastic cheese! (I think it was a gouda. Sheep's milk. Maybe.)
