What if they built a bridge and no one came?
And then they built another one right next to it, with a gift shop containing stuff that has nothing to do with the attraction?
And if you could take it from Virginia Beach to Cape Charles, thus leaving one of the crappier parts of the East Coast for one of the better ones?
And the drive consisted of skimming over water on a low girder bridge so you could look over the side at the waves, freighters waiting to enter the Bay, and wonder if the seagulls drew straws to decide which one sits on which lamppost?
If you had all of that, and paid somewhere around 12 USD for the privilege, then you'd have the CBB & T.

My partner wanted to take me to this 17-mile bridge & underwater tunnel while on the way to North Carolina.  Even though it was slightly out of the way, it was worth the trip.  Such beautiful scenery of the bay.

There's even a gift shop that you can pull over on the bridge or just walk around and get some fresh air.

Expect to shell out $12 (for a regular-sized car) at the toll.

Never a fan of bridges and tunnels, I had to cross this to get from Chesapeake to Cape Charles.  I have to say that it was pretty amazing.  You really get a sense of how big this bay is.  You should go.  Save your receipt for a discounted toll on the way back.

[Odd things I tend to notice.... ]
While the usual VA roadside seems to showcase the carnage of squished raccoons, this bridge featured former seagulls.  And then, as if to make up for it, there were butterflies flitting around everywhere, especially as I got closer to Cape Charles.
