This gem lies nestled in the gentrified embraces of east Austin. Don't let the tiny parking lot, or crowd of mac-book toting students dissuade you from stepping inside for a bite or a drink.
I was told everything on the menu is good. So I had a turkey sandwich, the cashier's go to sandwich. Moist turkey, fresh veggies and just the right amount of mayo. Striking the perfect balance of sauce and sandwich is an art that few sandwich places get right.
Good food, quaint atmosphere, can't lose. -

Sad to write a one star review but this place deserves it.
Terrible coffee beans to begin with, and the baristi aren't consistent with the preparation of drinks. Maybe spend more time on training/caring about making good drinks.
Worse though was the attitude from the staff. I cannot think of a ruder staff anywhere in the city or anywhere I've travelled outside of Austin.
** If the owner or staff read this, I would suggest changing to a bar if you don't want to spend time/money making better coffee. Or, encourage your staff to be more polite and maybe even friendly. If the people working there were nice, it would be much easier to overlook the bad coffee. -

Their food beats their coffee by an arms length - which means their both great. Cheese Steak Toco's surprised the hell out of me, so tasty.
Good place to work from. Oh, and they have beers on tap. -

Liked this place very much--took us a few minutes to realize it used to Pato's Tacos back when we still lived in Austin. Breakfast tacos are obviously their forte--I agree with the folks who recommended the thin strings of potatoes as an ingredient. Very good.

I really love Cherrywood Coffee House. The staff and owners are are excellent and friendly. The food is not what I expected from a coffee house, it is excellent!
I jumped out on a limb one day and had the gyro sandwich, it knocked my socks off, been back several times for that item alone. The po-boys and hamburgers are really great too.
Great place for weekend brunch, expect a crowd. Crawfish omelette, biscuits and gravy, migas, and huevos rancheros are a delight.
Definitely a place you will frequent after trying once! -

This place is owned by New Orleans expats, and they show Saints games every Sunday during football season. AND THEY'VE GOT ABITA TURBO DOG!
Which is enough for five stars right there, but what really puts Cherrywood over the top is its friendly, slightly raucous vibe. The staff is always nice, they've got a great comedy open mic on Tuesdays and lots of seating. It feels like a bar for smart people (or pretendo smart people... but, you know... it's Austin.) -

Love love love Cherrywood! A great food selection, with breakfast menu available all day!!! SWEET! Nice people.
If youre planning on going there to spend some time on your electronic device, make note that outlets are NOT abundant at this place. But they're there, just gotta look around.
FYI Limited parking. You can always park across the street. -

While I've yet to go here for a legitimate meal, Cherrywood Coffeehouse is a great place to get some coffee or a beer and hang out with your friends. They have a decent selection of beers on tap, all of which are reasonably priced ($4 for "premium, $3 for Lone Star) and are a dollar cheaper during their daily happy hour (3-7pm). Besides being a chill place to gather or get some work done, there are also frequent concerts (this is Austin after all). The only major downside is the tiny, rather awkward parking lot they offer, although there is plenty of street parking in the surrounding area. I will definitely be returning in the future and hopefully offering a more food-oriented review.

It's nice to eat a burger made with meat that hasn't been resting in a deep-freeze for eons *and* that has been properly seasoned. One of the better burgers in town, although I would want to eat a few more before I make a definitive judgment. The side salad was pretty decent, too, although they were a little pinche with the salad dressing.

I have to be honest and say that "Looks can be deceiving", especially when it comes to this place. I was meeting up with a study group on a Sunday afternoon, and this was the only place around so I got dropped off here beforehand. At first glance, the patio was filled with what I perceived to be hipsters, but since I was dropped off, and I really needed coffee, I went inside. The people at the counter were surprisingly nice and knowledgeable about coffee. Being the coffee snob I am, I like to find out the usual characteristics of coffee before I drink it. (Dark, medium or light roast, local, organic, bold, acidic, etc.) I looked for a seat, and because it was pretty crowded, I ended up sharing a table with a woman who was studying. We got to chatting, and she was really nice. It ended up she was studying linguistics, and since that is a topic I'm interested in, we chatted for a bit. She moved to Austin within the last year and half for grad school, and she said she liked Cherrywood for studying. By the time I was halfway done with my coffee, and chatting with her, I had to leave. The music playing in the place was pretty mellow and to my taste, and the coffee was easily one of the best cups I've had in Austin. I went back up to the counter and a guy behind the counter gave me a to go cup within a few seconds of me asking him. He even gave me a smile. Everyone here that I came in contact with was polite and attentive to the customers. I will definitely go back, especially because it's right down the street from my study group. :-)

Decent food, excellent staff, beers on tap, quirky live music some nights.
I would have given them 5 stars if they would get rid of the dang giant flat screen tv. -

People who complain that this place is "too hipster" need to get over themselves. Cherrywood Coffeehouse has a lot to offer.
You could call it a bar as it serves up a great selection of local beers on tap, has flat screen TV's and quite the crowd for football during game days. It also has free wifi and is a great place to get some work done. The coffee is really tasty and can be made a hundred different ways (I get mine made with almond milk). Their food is OUTSTANDING. This is a great place to come and just eat a meal whether it be breakfast (their breakfast tacos are some of the best I have ever had) or lunch (salads are made very fresh and come with a wonderful house dressing).
There is plenty of room such as a big outdoor patio, inside main room and even a side room with tables. The vibe is very laid back and cool. What's not to like???? Oh, yes. parking. My only complaint. -

The pros:
-Awesome breakfast tacos, especially with the haystack potatoes and veggie chorizo!
-Ample table space and privacy if you're there to study
-The tables don't wobble
-Good beer selection, great HH prices
-I enjoy the comedy open mic and pun-offs
-Good vibe
The cons:
-Parking. Whatever man. Do you need a taco that bad? Then you can deal, but I won't
-Large coffee is served in a mug wider than it is tall. Dislike.
-The thimble full of salsa issue for the tacos, yes, I'd be happy with a bottle of cholula
-The wait for food or counter service can be long. Nice to know you can call ahead
-What's with the football on the big TVs?
The puzzling:
-What's with the taj mahal cupola in front of the door? I keep waiting for it to blow away in a bad storm. -

This place earned extra points in my book by playing Jesus and Mary Chain. What better way to get motivated in the morning than listening to "Head On" and sipping a cup a joe.
The coffeehouse is spacious inside and out. The outdoor area is shaded by a huge tree and the indoor has ample seating.
They offer a happy hour and serve wine, bubbles and beer to include some local brews. Surprisingly this is a great place to watch a game. They have several flat screens showing the games and they set up a back room for viewing with ample tables and chairs.
Tip: Watch your head, stuff falls non stop from the tree.Listed in: Hello Cherrywood, your secrets…

While I realize I am older, un-cooler, and more Type A than the majority of the folks that frequent this coffeehouse I liked the nice, relaxed feel that I had experienced during a previous visit. But that relaxed feel and mellow vibe halted during this visit when my friend's lunch order came out wrong. My friend ordered a burger- I was standing next to her as she ordered and distinctly heard her say without cheese and with avocado. When the burger came out covered in cheese and sans avocado she nicely sent it back and explained that this is not what she ordered (and yes she was nice about it).
10-15 minutes passed and no replacement burger. I was picking through my lunch - waiting for my friend to be able to join me. When I went up to the counter to inquire into the status of the burger, the man who took both of our orders began to argue that he had given her exactly what she had ordered (despite the cheese and avocado issue) BUT that he was willing to fix it.
3 minutes later the burger came out and a woman who worked there walked over and stated that all the burgers at Cherrywood come with cheese and you need to request that they hold the cheese. That is fine and good - BUT my friend did ask for them to HOLD THE CHEESE (oh and she asked for avocado, nudnick!). Aarrrgh! My friend and I shrugged and went back to our lunch.
Then -in the midst of our lunching and chatting - the same man who took our order, then argued that my friend was mistaken about what she had ordered came over AGAIN to our table to tell us that all burgers come with cheese and that she needs to do a better job of ordering when we come back. Come back? Yah, I don't think so. -

Oh, put them on your good list. You can make a dozen cheap jabs about this place - "The Eighties called, they want their organic décor back" - but in the end, why be a dick? If you're in this area and need a pleasant respite, it's a pretty cool place.
The inside is big and roomy, and the outside patio is big and roomy too. At 8:30 on a Friday morning, it was a colorful and diverse crowd of scrubs, mommies with strollers, yups in designer shirts, and a handful of peeps that you can never tell if they're bums or Dellionaires. I thought the Americano with an extra shot was a tad more bitter than I like, but my Cubano was such a nice round-eye counterpart to a Sua Da that I wound up having two of them. You order at the counter here, the staff is friendly and efficient, and I thought the barista that morning took her job quite seriously.
My All-American breakfast taco was decent, they use a stringy hash-brown style of potato in the tacos here. The pumpkin muffin was good. Everything on their menu is an all-day affair. The weekend brunch menu limits some things, but does add French toast, biscuits and gravy, omelets, and Eggs Benedict for your pleasure. Coolio. They also have beer and wine, but I have no idea when they serve it. No one was drinking at 8:30am.
The bottom line for me is Cherrywood likes to say they're a coffeehouse with a food menu on steroids, but I kind of see it as another local restaurant with good coffee and a taco, sandwich, and burger menu. I just think there are a lot of other places offering pretty much the same stuff, and some who do it a little bit better. But are any of them located at this particular spot just East of I-35 and 38 1/2? Nope. And if this is where you're at, it's a pretty cool place to be. -

I loved the "wife's favorite cheeseburger" you know when the bun is so good you don't honestly care what else is on the burger? That was exactly thr case here! the wheat bun was perfect the patty was so fresh you could tell on the first bite! Loved it and even told strangers in line go try it! By the way it's the perfect size for the ladies ... Hints the name I'm sure. My freidn is from lousiana and she said that the seafood poboy is the best she has found in texas ....

Love Cherrywood for a quick, inexpensive, healthy lunch. I've had a handful of meals off the menu, and they were all delicious. When I'm in a hurry or busy at work, I'll call in my order for take-away.
My only complaint is that it's hot inside the coffeehouse. Maybe install a few fans? Otherwise, two thumbs up. Glad to have a fresh, local option on the East Side. -

I'm a coffee snob. I drink black coffee and if it isn't good, strong, flavorful, I'm really, really grouchy.
I didn't dare try the brew coffee here because after being up all night, I didn't want to be grouchy. So I challenged them with my back up - large Americano with an extra shot because it needs to be strong.
This was the biggest and best Americano I've ever had. And that's saying something. I had already had a venti from Starbucks. I was flying high and properly caffeinated all day. Thank you Cherrywood. I will be coming back. -

I love the chill atmosphere that Cheerywood gives, an Indie hipster that isn't trying too hard. Very relaxed.
The lighting is a little dim and the music a little loud to study, but if you're okay with that, then it's an awesome location. The food is fantastic for a cafe and the desserts are pretty yummy. The coffee was decent but didn't stand out too much in my mind.
The only thing keeping this from 5 stars is that I once saw the cashier killing a cockroach on the wall with a broom. I'm not really quite sure what to make of that, but it only occurred once. Sometimes there are spiders in corners, but the kind cashiers come by and kill it if you ask.
Still, I really like this place and I come by all the time. Just a warning to those who are a little insect-phobic. -
Review from Ashley S.
Is this a coffeehouse or an amazing diner with booze? Whatever you are, I like it. The entrance reminds me of the Taj Mahal with its coney ice cream top. The inside and outside are enormous, the drink AND food menu has so many options it takes too long to decide on one choice. I tend to not believe that a coffeehouse could possibly have decent food, but I have been proved wrong (yet again). The food is fantastic, and there is something for everyone at any hour.
I am a bit biased, because I love this area. The cafe is more than just your typical cafe. It is not a place to study or work, you won't get much accomplished. FYI they have free Wi-fi if you so desire to be in public alone & unsocial. Being more of a neighborhood hangout, with random events always taking place (think comedy happy hour at 10pm), yoga in the mornings, artsy events, eclectic music, poetry, karaoke (or so I've heard)....and you know what else? Its even got a pet friendly patio.
With plenty of vegatarian options that I have never heard of (soyrizo, fried tofu), and their eco-friendly signs near the napkins asking not to take more than you need, I think this place has topped my coffee shop list for all my random wants & needs. I mean, what esle could you possibly want for weekend brunch other than a crawfish omelette?Listed in: Eastin' it, Coffee addicts step up!, Sportin' it, Migas!

I'm giving a '2' because until last night, I'd had decent experiences there - not amazing, but certainly nothing to complain about.
I go to coffeehouses to either: talk with friends, study, read, or just grab a coffee. I do NOT go to coffeehouses for sports, drunks or people screaming obscenities - which is exactly what I got last night.
Apparently the owner of Cherrywood is a huge LSU football fan. And apparently that person thought it would be a good idea to gather a bunch of buddies, throw in a bunch of booze, and then proceed to fill the coffeehouse with screams, curses, and admonitions to 'Break his femur!' and 'Get him [expletive deleted]' etc. I don't think it was the owner yelling that, but I can't be sure, since we weren't even able to stand being in the same room as the folks who should have been at a sports bar or in their own house.
All I can figure is either: (A) the owner is clueless about why most Austinites go to a coffeehouse or (B) doesn't care a whit about their customers. When the serving staff (bless their hearts) took the complaints of no fewer than 15 of us huddled in the back room to the group, they were yelled at.
All I can guess is that getting drunk and watching football is more important than the comfort of the customers at Cherrywood. If that crowd had been anyone other than the owner and the owner's friends, they would have been out on their keisters after the first few minutes of drunken shrieking. As it was, all the paying customers were driven out. The place was practically deserted when we finally gave up.
I will NOT be going back. And I'm going to suggest that the coffee-loving group of 20 or 30 of us who pick an independent coffee house at which to congregate once or twice a month (and spend a lot of cash) no longer include Cherrywood in our rotation. -

Wow! I have been going there for a few years now... Won't be going back. The loud drunks screaming obscenities at the football game on the television. Then when a server brought the patrons complaints to the table, one of the owners (a member of the aforementioned football screamers yelled at him). That is how you treat your customers and employees? Well you will be doing it without my patronage from now on.

Cherrywood Coffeehouse is a wonderfully hidden location in East-ish Austin. Went here a couple weeks ago to watch a friend perform (Sam Arnold woo!) and the ambiance of the outside seating was delightful. They have the best fish tacos I've ever had in all of Austin and the gyro wasn't bad either.
Only bad thing was the palm tree we were sitting under decided to start dropping limbs onto our table and friends, which resulted in lots of laughs and sore bumps on the head.
This is a nice little coffeehouse and I'd definitely go back here if I had a reason, but not a whole lot really stood out to me as being extraordinarily unique. -

The first time I went to Cherrywood, I had a burger with fries and it was super delicious. It was convenient to just place our order and a waitress brought our food outside to us when it was ready. The second time I went here though, the hubs and I ordered coffee and weren't given a number so we had to wait around for them to call our order....and it took a good 15-20 minutes. It seemed like they forgot about us since it wasn't that busy at the time.
But all in all, I enjoy this place. The outside patio area is great and it seems like the table service is pretty quick. Most of the service people seem friendly, but the one girl who was making our drinks just seemed like she didn't want to be there, wasn't too friendly. She could've just been having a long day though.
If i lived closer to this place I'd probably hang out there more. -
Review from Kat L.
This isn't your chemistry lab partner's coffee shop.
In fact, the "coffee" part of "Cherrywood Coffeehouse" seems to have become a bit of an afterthought--there's too much other excitement going on! Don't get me wrong, they do have coffee . . . I've just never tried it because I'm rarely here for coffee. (As part of that, I wouldn't really say this is the ideal place to hold a major study session).
I always seem to end up coming here for beers, because they have a pretty great variety on tap. Of course Fireman's and Blue Moon, but you've also got Spaten and ... uh... other stuff I can't remember right now. (I really need to take notes when I plan to Yelp!) The food is also deeeeeeelishuz! The Boyfriend and I split their pork and fish taco plates last night, and I was really surprised in how good the fish was (a lot of places can't pull that one off very well). Just a warning, the pork and the salsa for the chips, was SPICY! Ai, caliente!
But the real reason I suggest you don't come out here for studying past, oh, 4 PM, is because there is ALWAYS. SOMETHING. GOING. ON. I'm not kidding. The first night I came here they had shadow puppet theater going on. PUPPETS! Last night they had some sort of an accordionist. This isn't to mention their regular comedy happy hour, and their free yoga in the mornings. Whew! Is this a place of business or the East Austin Community Center? Well, I don't mind your identity crisis Cherrywood Coffeehouse; it just keeps you interesting, and it makes me want to keep visiting you to find out what crazy antics you'll do next. -
Review from Tracey S.
When the Epoch Coffee parking lot is almost full and all the tables are occupied, I go to Cherrywood Coffeehouse because it is open until midnight and not too far from me. They have Wifi and plenty of small indoor tables. I wish more of the tables along the wall had electrical outlets next to it. So in terms of electrical outlets, Epoch Coffee beats Cherrywood.
Unlike the typical Austin coffeeshop, Cherrywood has a wide variety of things on their menu, ranging from salads to catfish poboys to burgers. There's even a section of the menu for Seafood. I had the catfish poboy and it was fine but nothing memorable. A guy next to me in line was raving about the burgers there.
They have cheap prices for Austin coffeeshop/restaurant standards. An iced tea is $2.41 and includes free refills. They also have a nice selection of beer.
Other unique aspects of Cherrywood Coffeehouse are that they have yoga on Mondays and live music on Saturday nights. They have a huge patio with lots of outdoor seating. Hanging out at Cherrywood relaxes me. Cherrywood is like a community hangout spot. From the conversations I overheard, locals run into each other here a lot.
I love Cherrywood Coffeehouse but took off a star for the compact parking spots in its parking lot. The two times I've been here I was fortunate enough to get a spot in the parking lot. There is a neighborhood to the south where you can park. 38 1/2 street is pretty slow and mellow--there are speed bumps on the road and people crossing the street in no hurry. -

I love you.
I love your quirkiness and your weirdness and how you still handle your business.
I love that you are laid back chill yet you are full of fun, hidden finds.
I love your genuine bubbly persons and the way you handle my business.
I love your location and your sexy library setup complete with do-me nooks.
I love your lighting and your choices of deck or inside.
But damn it, I don't love your parking.
Still. I love you.
I so love your food and your drink and your yummy-ass choices of each.
Most of all, I love this incredibly creature who introduced me to you.

So I decided to return here after a really bad experience 2 years ago (an unbelievably rude staff member who was belching loudly while people were trying to eat).
The food seems pretty good now, I've tried both the Eggs Benedict and the Gyro sandwich. The staff seemed fine, and no sign of the "belcher", hopefully they got rid of her.
One complaint remains though. My coffee drink of choice is an iced latte with skimmed milk. I get this all the time at Thunderbirds on Manor, and at Starbucks, and its always good there.
I ordered the same thing at Cherrywood Coffeehouse, and I don't know how they made it, but it was DISGUSTING. It was much darker than it should have been, and tasted bitter and gritty.
I make these myself and its not hard, a shot or two of coffee, add ice, then add milk.
However they make iced lattes, they need to do it differently.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Maybe they were having an off night, but it seems like this place has gone downhill since last time I was here. The Mom's burger was still good, but it seems like the patty was thinner than last time. The fries were also cooked inconsistently, and there were (yes, I counted) FOURTEEN flies on the windowsill where I sat. Yikes.
Still a good burger & beer place and their wi-fi is consistent, but they need to do something about the fly problem.Listed in: Austin's Javas

Some of my friends live close to Cherrywood and Coffeehouse and I'm looking forward to going there every time I visit my buddies. The place is just cool, they have beer, really good coffee and some great food and everybody who works there is very friendly. The inside is nice and cozy and there is a large patio outside. My personal favorite for breakfast is the Luna Taco and they also have croissants for breakfast that are quite good. The only tiny suggestion I would have is the salsa for the tacos, would be nice to have a bigger variety of salsa and some really hot salsa, everything else about the place is perfect :)

You know, when you have a business transaction, you expect the person at the register to hang around long enough for them to hear and acknowledge that you said "Thanks a lot! Have a good one!" You don't get that at Cherrywood. I mean, unless you're the personal friend of the owner or one of the employees.
Also, every time I go here someone is hacking and sniffling. Yum!
Their breakfast tacos are good enough that I don't mind calling in ahead of time (the wait is really long), but every time I come back I am shocked by how awfully rude their employees are, especially in an economy like this where a lot of people would love to have a job. Any job. Even this one. Sigh.1 Previous Review:

Pros:
-The food is good. The breakfast tacos are tasty and the fish tacos are the best I've had anywhere in Austin so far. I like that for the side they let you choose from several options, and don't just go for the standard french fries. I personally recommend the cucumber salad side.
-You get 10% off with a go-local card. This is awesome.
Cons:
-The prices are naturally a little high. With the go-local card, it helps bring them down a little, but definitely more expensive than it should be.
-It can get a little cramped inside, especially when the weather outside is not very inviting.
-No proper bike rack. Considering how much of their clientele rides bikes (a lot), I would think they would do something about this. Everyone just locks their bikes to the fence, which work, but is definitely less convenient than a proper bike rack.
Edit:
Been here a few more times now and I'm progressively more happy with them. One time, they forgot two orders of fries of a large to-go order, and gave us a free six pack to make up for it. That's pretty sweet. -

I'd probably up my review to 4 stars if their coffee wasn't so darn overpriced. $2.75 for a large cup of coffee is pretty out-there, especially since the coffee isn't very good. Its more like a caffeine-delivery medium instead of a hot beverage to be savored and enjoyed.
Since I've been going to Cherrywood the food quality has taken a marked dive. I used to be able to count on the quality construction of their burgers, but since a few months ago, they've taken on a soggy-sad appearance. I can usually still count on their pork tacos as old trusties though.
Most of the employees and baristas are actually very nice. -

I went for brunch last Sunday at the suggestion of a friend. I'll tell you about the two things I ordered that day that you should avoid.
1. I got a mimosa. I ordered a large, which is served in a pint glass......over ice. ICE? Who puts ice in a mimosa? I'm from New Orleans too--we're not all like that. When the lady handed it to me, I immediately handed it back asked for one without ice. The chick next to her seemed offended and, in a defensive tone, told me it would not be in a glass that big, and blah blah something else. I threw my hands up (I didn't mean to hurt you, sister!) and said, "I don't care, I just don't want ice in a mimosa." I got what I asked for in a smaller glass, but further advice for you: just get a beer. Cherrywood, for $5.50 y'all can afford to put more Andre in it than that!
2. When we got there, I noticed the "voted best affordable, delectable burger" for the Chronicle's b.o.a. 2010. I went for it....but trusting the winners of the best of austin list to deliver the goods is like asking your grandmother for a movie recommendation and expecting to like it.
I ordered "the wife's" burger--a single patty (I expected two patties would be way too much meat for me) and my husband got the house burger--two beef patties. I may honestly say that it was THE WORST burger I've ever had. It was a @#$%ing bread sandwich with cheese! The sticky-gummy-sweetish bread was too thick and totally took over everything else. I asked for mustard and mayo only (they usually also add ketchup) and when I opened the burger to check out the goods, there was the tiniest quarter-sized smear--why bother putting it on there at all? The patty couldn't have been more than about 4 millimeters thick and it just disappeared in all that bread. The only good parts of this burger are nice, thinly sliced red onions, good lettuce, and a good amount of cheddar. I filled up on fries (decent fries--could be crisper) and left the bread sandwich for the grackles.
In my man's double patty burger, you could at least see the meat, but he didn't get through half of his either--these burgers just aren't worth it. I don't know where you b.o.a. voters ate before you experienced this burger as the best, even as a "value" burger, but y'all need to get to some other places around town with cheaper burgers that beat the heck out of this one.
TO CC's CREDIT: On a previous visit, hubby and I shared a seafood platter, a salad, and a bottle of wine. It's a nice little salad, they do the seafood right, and they have some tolerable bottles at pretty fair restaurant prices (as well as some gross bottles also at decent prices) -

Cherrywood has a great vibe and surprisingly good food for a coffee shop. I am often disappointed with the quality of food at cafes so I typically stick to java drinks. Their breakfast tacos are more like burritos which is fine by me! I love the patio and stage they have out back.
