9 reviews for Cheng's Fried Chicken
I love Cheng's. At first, they're a little untrusting, but after a few visits this couple, who runs their station underneath the roar of the red line trains, actually really warms up to you. When I am walking in the neighborhood, I wave to them inside and they actually smile now.
Listen, for any idiot who wants to call this place filthy, you should maybe take an honest look at your own stove before trying to own this place as dirty. Filth is a perception lent to you by the fact of the roaring trains. The Chengs (I'm actually not sure if that is their real last name) do a wonderful job of keeping their place as clean as they can. They make food ready in record time, with an amazjng price, and their fried chicken is about fifty times better than the normally underpar crap served at the Popeyes near Devon, on Broadway. If any of you stuck up yuppies think it's worth it to order from Mei Shung or Ben's Thai or that horrible overpriced craphole Wing Hoe on Sheridan, rather than taking a well advised chance with this Humble looking but outstanding little place, have at it.
You can bankroll your ridiculous decision, while the rest of us will be at home ten minutes after ordering our food, enjoying everything while you barf out your overpriced "ethnic" happy meals into your condo sinks.
I just have to say I'm repulsed by a few of the reviews so far. If you are that much of a snob, don't bother to slum it and write your nasty slander. Get to Wing Hoe and let them treat you like crap over there! Or better yet, go to Argyle and later complain about the service. It's not like anyone actually wants to hear your stupid harping anyway.
Great little hole in the wall to get some fried chicken. I have never tried the Chinese food here as the chicken is so damned good! Didn't have any issue with the employees/owners. Yes it is a hole in the wall. The dirt you see is buildup from 30+ years of business and no true Chinese restaurant ever cleans their windows. In their culture it is bad luck to clean your windows! Yay CULTURE!
Great cheap, little whole in the wall. Don't even get any Chinese food from here and its a Chinese restaurant!!! Get the wings, ask for them fried hard, you will have to wait 10-15 minutes, believe me its worth it, been coming here for years!!!!
Weirdly not that bad, for cheap fried chicken from in a filthy hole in the wall located underneath the El tracks. (Is that a qualified enough endorsement?)
Haven't tried the Chinese food, and probably never will, given the proximity of some very good places.
But if you're down to your last nickels and dimes and still don't want to cook, you could do worse.
Sitting directly underneath the Red Line (Bryn Mawr station), this small Chinese restaurant sells tasty fried chicken, and other helpings. The selection of Chinese food is on par w/ the neighboring places, but I love their rendition of General Tso's chicken at about $5 which is cheaper than the neighbors. The sauce is thick and sweet, but underlined w/ enough heat to push all other flavors forward. You will be eating out of a plastic plate and utensils on a cafeteria tray, but the sauce does the tricks w/ the pork fried rice and breaded chicken pieces, though they may be a bit heavy on the breading side.
You won't find much else however, in the way of decor, ambiance, lighting, or friendly smile. Still, this hole in the wall that vibrates every 5-15 minutes does it for my cravings for simple pleasure at a price that's hard to beat.
Totally disgusting stinky little boite under the L stop. This place smells really bad. And for ME not to reco' a simple little joint, it's got to be BAD.
I love Cheng's! I eat here on a weekly basis after work. What it lacks in ambiance and decor it more than makes up for in awesome food for an awesome price.
I had a co worker tell me about this place, him going 3x's a week. I always avoided it due to it's lack of lighting and strange vibe (which usually hints to me that the food might acutally be good). But since it makes a easy dinner to pick up on my way home, I tried it. And it's frickin good and a cheap dinner. I tried some fried rice of the menu, and wasn't impressed. I'll just stick to my two fried chicken thighs, thanks.
Rude, gross, stinks and terribly bad food (I wasn't expecting much for the price but it was horrible!). I saw a 300# hoodrat getting a take-out of "chicken wings". I believe that is their specialty.
