Ok - first! I should mention that I am not a princess when I travel so I'm not really interested in luxury. Most of my time is spent out exploring and enjoying whichever town I'm in. My concerns, in order of importance are: safety, cleanliness, ... that's it. That being said, I had no problem with Chelsea Star.

I stayed with friends in a tiny 3-bed (one was a bunk) room. The room was small, had no fridge or tv -- as a matter of fact the only "extras" were a lamp, a side table and an A/C unit. The staff were nice and helpful, the room was right over 8th and 30th so, Yes! it was noisy but you can chalk that up to Guliani's "No Honking" rule being repealed. Still, I (and my travel buddies) slept well.

There is a shared bathroom but there are 2 private toilets and one shared sink outside of a full bath behind door #3 -- so you shouldn't have a super long wait if ya gotta "go".

You can't beat the location -- step out the door and you are right in the thick of it -- no long rides home to a Brooklyn or Queens hotel after a late night out on the town. I love both of the other boroughs but if you're gonna do MIdTown, I would say Chelsea Star is a seemingly safe (no place is totally safe -- use common sense and discretion) and clean. I did the bed bug inspection immediately after entering the room and found no issues.

So it began badly when they took out money out of my account above the 10% that they had advertised. When I phoned them to inform me of this discrepancy, they told me it would go towards the cost of the room. However, when I arrived this was not the case and they refused to refund it. They wanted me to pay the 10% + the room price + the money they had already taken out. They were rude and did not explain why they took that amount. I ended up walking out and am pursuing legal action.

I'm from Miami. I went on a small 3 day vacation to NY city. I read reviews online but they were somewhat misleading.

    PROs:
Super friendly staff. They even had sowing needles and thread available. It's straight forward on pricing. $45 for a shared room/ shared bathroom, $119 private room with shared bathrooms and a private room with a private bathroom will run u about $209. The hotel is in a great location. Everything is about 10 minutes walking or 10-20 minutes subway.
Also, John from the front desk was very helpful. He showed me where to go sight seeing. He helped me understand the subway systems and the map of the city. Did I mention the staff was cool?
It is maintained very clean. And it has this small terrace where one can sit and enjoy a read or a 5 min break from the city.

    CONs:
When I called to make the reservation I could swear I was told the room had a private bathroom. It did not. I felt super nasty having to share a bathroom. Though it felt like I was the only one using it. It was mostly clean. Although, sometimes after someone took a shower, the floor would be wet and I would nasty it up with my shoes.
The room is TINY! And it has no A/C! These were things I was not told when I made the reservation over the phone. Moreover, the person who took down my credit card info heard it wrong and it did not call me back to resolve the issue. I almost lost my reservation. I got lucky because I called back to confirm.
Did I mention there's no freaking air conditioning?
The room I stayed in was literally a cozy hole in the wall. Pretty ridiculous.

    Conclusion:
All in all, I wouldnt return to this hotel unless I was on a real tight budget. It isn't a piece a crap.  It's ok if ur on a budget. If your going to share bathrooms or rooms, make sure you prepare by buying a bag where you can keep all your personal hygiene stuff (ie scrub, soap, shampoo, etc...) and a pair of sandals for the shower in case someone has athletes foot. Try looking for better rooms for the same price. $119 is the lowest o found for a decent room online. Make sure you check to see if it has the amentities required for decent living( like FREAKING AIR CONDITIONING!)
I gave it 3 stars because it is what it is and for the price you can't expect quality like at the "The W" or some fancy place like that. So it serves it's purpose in a real basic and simple manner.

I'm surprised to see so many bad reviews. OK, this place does not provide you with the utmost comfort. But hey, if you're looking for a hostel it's probably because your budget is tight, right? You're probably part of a group of student on its first trip in NYC and don't really want to spend $150 per night in a luxury hotel, right?

So, in the end I'd say its not perfect but better than OK. It's well located. Not perfectly though: if you spend a couple of days up north visiting everything around Central Park, and if you like to do everything by foot, you'll probably have to go through Times Square each time you want to go back to the place, which is exhausting given the density of the crowd in this particular spot. But there's little place for complaints here: you're very close to the Madison Square Garden, very very close to Pennsylvania Station and there's a nice deli on the other side of the 8th avenue if you wanna grab a couple of beers to relax at the end of the day. And, again, if you plan to take the underground as little as possible, your located in a kind of central position, with Chelsea Market (a place you definitely have to visit) a few blocks in the South for instance.

Regarding rooms I cannot complain either. You know what you're supposed to expect here, such as dorms if you go for the cheapest option. In my memories, they were very clean. No problem here IMHO.

I know the simple fact of being in town with my very best friend might "corrupt" my judgement. But as I said most of the people who would look for cheap nights are probably in the same situation: they're here to enjoy the city, not to sleep in a king size bed.

First off when you're writing about budget lodging, I don't think people have the right to complain that it wasn't the Ritz Carlton. As for me, I really don't expect or need much and looking for cheap places to stay online I feel like I've learned how to read between the lines pretty well, but with the Chelsea Star I missed the mark.

For starters my room hadn't been vacuumed in probably a week or two with obvious debris everywhere. Lint, threads, cherry pits, loose change, clothing tags, crumbled up bits of paper, hair, I mean when I walked around in my bare feet I kept stepping on stuff that hurt or stuck to my feet. Yeah, not what you want in a hotel. I mean come on, vacuum.

As for the bed, I didn't mind that the mattress is wrapped in plastic. New York City has a bed bug problem and you should be in good shape to not be fed upon during your sleep or take the critters home with you with a plastic encased mattress - but here they wrapped something like a hefty bag over the bed, a noisy one that crinkles every time you move, then threw a single thin sheet over it. Mattress, crinkle plastic, thin sheet. Like c'mon - put a mattress pad over the plastic at least. Since it was warm I decided to strip the bed and put the blanket I didn't need underneath the sheet, only to find the plastic was majorly torn in places which ultimately led me to a night of bed bug paranoia. Didn't see any - but knowing that they've had a problem (hence the plastic) and that they aren't addressing it properly didn't add up to a restful night's sleep.

If for some reason you're going to stay here anyway (good location) then go with less rather than more. The shower stall in the public restroom looked better than the shower in my room I was paying the extra bucks for - and the extra room to move around in my room was useless really when the wi-fi only works in the basement anyway.

Well, I sprung for the single room, so I got a tiny room with a tiny bed with flimsy sheets.  I certainly hope they bring out some heavier blankets in the colder months.  The room also smelled like hot dogs, yet there were no hot dog vendors within a block.  It was pretty clean, and you got clean towels every day.  Bathrooms were pretty clean too, and when I left my glasses in there after a shower like a god damned idiot, they were indeed still there on the sink where I left them.

My biggest problem was that there were no available electrical outlets.  WTF?  It's a friggin hostel/hotel!  What about people with cameras & iPods?  There was a TV and a lamp, so I followed those cords to an extension cord stapled along the side of the bed, and unplugged the lamp to make room for the iPod & camera charger.

It wasn't a bad experience, though it was quite a ways from the East Village (there are some bars immediately around here, but they were pretty meh).  If I had to stay here again, I could deal, but I definitely intend to go elsewhere next time I go to NY.

Stayed here for a few days when I was on vacation.

From the outside, it's nothing to look at if not sometimes hard to find if you've never been in NYC before. But once you're in, up the stairs, it starts to show off it's goods.

The receptionist was very nice to us, and provided a variety of amenities to ease our long day of flying and carrying our luggage throughout the city.

I was warmly surprised to find the rooms very quaint. I understood they had different set ups based on how much you were willing to pay. They sort of work as a hostel, but also provide large enough rooms to meet the needs of a family of 5 or so.

Our hotel room was clean, smelled nice, and had some nice touches to it involving a metal grilled door which led to the bathroom.

They have a common area outside, works sort of like an atrium. Very cool, with a nice array of plants to ease the vibe of any major metropolitan city. Plenty of seating and patio furniture to relax after a long day of traversing through NYC.

It's location is also very convenient, with easy access to public transportation and some of the city's landmarks and tourist areas.

By large and all, it was a very pleasant stay.

i think they have recently remodeled (doesnt look like the pictures at all). IT IS VERY NICE RIGHT NOW despite the complaints that people gave. I was at big apple hostel for one day and moved to chelsea star. I am VERY satisfied with the service and the public shower/bathrooms they have. FREE WIFI!

For $115 a night and a block from Penn Station (where the DC bargain buses stop) this place is hard to beat. It looks a bit dumpy from the outside but is nice on the inside, especially considering the price. The rooms are clean, decent size and all have different decor. Our room did not have a closet or wardrobe just a bar where you could hand a few pieces. But we were just there for a few nights so it did not really matter.  Our room (#403) had a nice big bathroom. You can borrow a hairdryer at the front desk. A bit lame is that they charge you $2 if you want to leave your bag there after check-out even if only for a couple of hours.... Oh, one more note... the place has not elevator so be prepared to climb stairs!

So all of this would get this hotel a 4 star for a bargain hotel and remember we are not looking for a W Hotel style experience but an affordable hotel room in Manhattan that leaves you money for a show and some cake from the Black Hound (-:  And here comes the big BUT or HOWEVER..... our room faced 8th Avenue and the windows have zero noise insulation... we felt our beds were on the street. Sooo loud - and I sleep through pretty much everything. There is also a grate or metal place on the road so everything a car or truck passes over it it makes a lot of noise. So do NOT get a room facing 8th Avenue....

They also have rooms without in-room bathrooms and have dorm-style rooms (I saw one that had around 20 bunk beds in it but was nice and clean, much better than your average youth hostel)  which are even more budget.

Just what I needed for my one night stay -- a clean, safe, inexpensive room 3-5 minutes from Penn Station with free WiFi.  The Chelsea has a lot of great features, but there are tradeoffs, and you should consider what you're willing to compromise on for price and proximity.

Despite the unimpressive outside, the Chelsea's interior is clean, cheerful, one of a kind, and well maintained.  The staff at the front desk were extremely helpful, offering maps and the opportunity to buy an all-day subway pass during check-in.  And while I was three hours early for check in, they had a room ready for me.

The shared bathroom turned out better than expected, with two toilets and a shower, all handsomely done up.  The murals in my room -- the Esther Williams -- weren't exactly high art, but the swimming pool styling, with a tiled floor and stairs leading up to the bed, was perfectly executed.  The free wireless was plenty speedy, and the small TV sufficed.  While there is no freestanding furniture (see below), the space is extremely efficient and offers ample storage space, with open closet, a shelf overhead, and two smaller shelves alongside the bed, plus a large mirror on one wall.  Noise from other guests was virtually nonexistent, and the temperature on this chilly weekend was just fine.

There were parts of my stay that had me gritting my teeth, chief among them no chairs or real desk space in-room.  There is a small communal kitchen where you can microwave meals, brew coffee or tea, eat, and access the Internet, but it's a pain if you're looking forward to takeout and websurfing in your lovely, private, WiFi-equipped room.  The only in-room electrical outlet I found was a two prong plug a few feet from the bed, which can be problematic.  If you don't find the sound of nighttime traffic lulling (and don't plan to be awake all night) bring earplugs.  Finally, if accessibility is a concern, I'd suggest contacting the hotel and seeing if accommodations can be made.  But if your only concern is getting your luggage upstairs, rest assured -- the staff can help with that.

Everyone has different non-negotiables when it comes to their comfort.  If you're a single traveler on a budget whose top concerns are a clean, safe room near a major transportation hub in the heart of Manhattan, with free in-room WiFi Internet access a major plus, the Chelsea may well be for you.  I'm definitely looking forward to another stay, and think it's worth considering -- but DO visit their website, read reviews here and elsewhere, and figure out what you're willing to compromise on.

This hotel/hostel is ok.  They claim to have recently renovated the place.  I'm glad I never stayed before the renovations.

I was booked in the "Madonna" room.  It had cheasy albums hung on the walls with pictures of Madonna glued onto them.  Very small tv, beds were ok except for the plastic underneath the sheets.

It was pretty clean and the staff was accomodating.  It has a nice patio area out back and also has two computers for internet service ($2 for twenty minutes).

The location is good - just a couple of blocks from the C train and about 5 blocks from Penn Station.

    I would stay again.

Perhaps it is because one may consider me a spoiled American, but I just didn't vibe with this place. Sure it is cheap, and when in New York, you don't really sleep, but I still can't figure out why this is called a hotel. The cool factor is that Madonna once lived here, and that this is where Sid Vicious killed Nancy.

There are three flights of stairs, and no elevator. There is one bathroom- one toilet, one shower- per floor of 10+ shared rooms. Only one computer for email- if that is important to you.

The room was super tiny for being over $100 a night. Some rooms I noticed had a little dresser, mine did not. If you are a light sleeper, don't stay in the King and I room. The blinds and flimsy half curtain do not block out morning light. The linens resemble fine paper that belong on your table, not your bed.

On the up side, the bathrooms are super clean and fresh towels were provided each day. There is a nice patio area for hanging out and enjoying a nice warm day or evening.  It is centrally located to the subway and many great areas of Manhattan.

The staff was so so. On the website it states that they would be happy to arrange transportation when you arrive at the airport. When I called I was told to look at the website and I would find how to get to the hotel. Not exactly friendly service.  I was overcharged for my stay,  I did mention it the first night I came- but I skipped it thinking I underestimated the tax. Thankfully a super smart and kind staff member discovered the error.

I have had much better luck staying at a youth hostel.

(Note- according to a high power yelper, I have been informed that this is not the hotel where Madonna lived, or where Sid did the evil deed. HOWEVER, if you call the hotel they advertise that Madonna did live there. Like it all really matters)

I am a supermodel and I am staying in a motel!
On a serious note, this place was dirty. I was with a group of friends from Portland, OR. Someone in our group got a good deal on the place. We got one of the apt suites. At least we had our own bathroom even though I had to share the bathroom with others in the room. I am certainly glad that I did not have to use a hallway bathroom just like a hostel or flophouse like the rooms upstairs.
In the past when I went to NYC I managed to get a good deal on http://hotels.com for a room at the Milforfd Plaza.
I would not stay at the Chelsea Star again. It was dirty. It was difficult to get extra towels.

I booked a room almost a month in advance  from California for the Art Expo and when I arrived in the evening ready to unload and rest, the desk clerk told me that I did not have a room that they were full and that I was a no-show in their computer system.

Furious without a place to stay now, I asked, "Why would I call in the evening from California and book a room for that same night? I tried to make sense of it all and I was told to speak to the manager the next day after 3PM. I was pissed and I even recognized the clerk's voice as the person who helped me over the phone and told him and by the look on his face he knew, he couldn't even deny it and I spoke to him more than once while making my plans and booking the hotel room.

In the end, they charged my credit card-the bastards!! And booked me for the same night that I called in to make me a no-show?

I was initially attracted to the place because of its pictures and low price but in this case, you do get what you pay for...the front entrance is vague and the entrance and office is dirty and cheesy decor. I could live without the cockroaches I started imagining while getting a better look at the place while the desk clerk jerked me around.

I ended up staying in a nicer hotel and at some friend's loft. I heard the Chelsea was a nice neighborhood but this motel wasn't.

after reading several of the post prior to the trip, i was a bit worry about how clean and sanitized the place is.  but regardless, my room was booked and the biz trip was happening and it's the cheapest closet place we can find to the convention that we were attending.

yes, the outside does look crappy.  there is a flight of stairs before the lobby.  they upgraded me to a deluxe becuz they were out of the superior room i had book.  not sure how many deluxe rooms they have in the hotel but the one i stayed in was on the top floor so i had to walk up two more flight of stairs with my luggage but if you need help, they will help you.

when I called to book my room, the guy who answered the phone sounded annoyed.  but we i arrived, i recognized the guy who checked me in is the same guy on the phone and he was really really nice.

the deluxe room was very comfortable.  my own bathroom, closet, couch and of course the queen bed.  i even have a blow dryer (hidden in the closet), safe (didn't use) and an iron.

There was housekeeping but i heard that they don't change your towels which i do believe it's true.  what kind of annoyed me a bit is that while i so happened to be in their patio enjoying my noon coffee, i noticed some guy was sticking a water hose out of what seem to be my room window to another staff to clean the roof.  I don't mind housekeeping going in my room, but any staff going in and out as needed, i wasn't very uncomfortable with that especially when you check in, they make you sign a thing that said they are not reliable if you lose any personal belongings.

overall the room seemed clean.  the bed is lined with a plastic lining so when moving around, you will heard it but at least there won't be bed bugs.  and if you are a light sleeper, make sure you bring earplugs.  there is a microwave and hot water pot in the lower level.

the location is very convenient.  3-5 minutes walking distance to Penn station, drug store, wholesaler/retailer shopping, korean town.  but if you are a female, i wouldn't recommend walking back to the hotel by yourself late at night.

this has been a good experience, I enjoyed my stay.

I would give this place one star but I think part of our bad experience was we were unlucky and got a particularly bad room. The Chelsea Star is a cheap place in a popular part of town- it is really close to a lot of attractions. However, some of the rooms are terrible, and we got one. It was truly a closet- barely enough room to get into bed or for our luggage (and we booked it as a double). Even worse, we were overlooking 8th avenue and we HAD to leave the window open or we were sweltering- and this was with 50 degree weather! I hope they don't use that room in the summer or someone would die. Even with earplugs it was impossible to sleep as 8th Ave is extremely busy and noisy. The shared bathrooms weren't terrible but they weren't great either, and you share them with at least 6 other rooms (so in the morning you're often waiting).
Now, I caught a glimpse of some other rooms that were double occupancy that were bigger and nicer-looking that ours, so again, it may be a matter of luck with which room you get. Basically, this place should bill itself as a hostel, and NO WAY should our room have been $100 a night (as a comparison, check out the Belleclaire Hotel on the upper west side, which is the same price and much, much nicer). I would not stay in the place again- if you must stay here, try to request a room that is NOT facing 8th avenue. Maybe you'll have a better experience then.

(transferring from old account, lost password)
I GOT BED BUGS FROM THIS PLACE! staying here was kind of a nightmare. the first thing that happened was the shock of an added 60 dollars to the bill because there was no mention in my online quote of the 18% room tax. I stayed in a single with an Africa theme, which for some reason means that all my furniture was made of plywood and my night stand was a bar stool. I was told I couldn't get an extra towel for my hair, so in the morning I just took one out of the housekeeper's bag of clean laundry. I couldn't breathe at all in the room, besides getting a little claustrophobic from the fact that the room was only 8 feet long and 5 feet wide, the heater ran the entire length of the 8 foot wall and didn't turn off all night. It was extremely hot. I had to open the window to relieve myself from the heat and be able to breathe. The wireless did not work, I managed to pirate from a neighboring signal that sometimes worked. The only reason I stayed at the Chelsea Star was because of the advertised wireless access and cable tv. The tv didn't have a remote and it didn't have cable, it only got 3 channels and only one was clear enough of static to watch.
Because I had to open the window....in the middle of January....just to be able to breathe, I had a really hard time falling asleep because there was a grate on the street directly outside of my window and because of the hotels location between Penn Station and Port Authority the traffic NEVER stops. There was a taxi or truck or car hitting the grate every few seconds which made an incredibly loud banging noise every time. I used to live at the same level of a main interstate and a half mile away from an airport at the same time and I never had problems with the noise from that, I even found it calming, but the noise from the grate was horrible. I put my headphones on and blasted my music to drown out the grate noise..kind of. Once I finally fell asleep I would eventually be woken up a number of times in the night because the window didn't actually have a frame, it was just kind of somehow staying in the wall and would slowly close. I would wake up choking and drowning and sweat from the heat in the room and would have to open the window again. I didn't have anything to prop it open since the only piece of furniture that wasn't screwed to the wall was the lone barstool that I was holding my laptop, alarm clock, lamp and phone. I probably could have used the trash can now that I think of it. The second night was not quite as bad since I had already figured out how to deal with those issues, I still had to wake up and open the window throughout the night though.
The room however was very clean and i was really impressed with the cleanliness of the shared bathroom. I felt pretty comfortable walking around in the shower with barefeet which is good because I couldn't find my flip flops when I was packing to leave for NY that I only own for new york hostel showers....there have been some pretty horrifying shower stall experiences in other hostels.
I'm a regular traveller to New York and I haven't been back to the Chelsea Star. I split a hotel room with friends and I'm planning on trying out another budget hotel that is about 30 bucks more expensive, but I have a feeling it will be worth it, however because of the comparative cleanliness of the Chelsea Star to other hostels I've stayed in I would consider staying again in the future if I couldn't find a better deal elsewhere. But I absolutely will not stay in the Africa room again, and I'd recommend you avoid it as well.
Oh I also did not feel that the luggage storage for after check-out was particularly safe....they just keep it on the side of the desk which is not always manned since there's often only one person working there. I opted for buying a rolling duffle bag at the k-mart a few blocks away and repacking all my belongings into it so I wouldn't have to carry them all on my back rather than leaving my bags unattended at the hotel all day.

OK., I said I might stay here again if I couldn't get a room at the Pod, I found out I had to come back to work in New York with short notice and surely enough the Pod was booked and so I got a room here again. I can confidently say that I will never stay here again. I'm writing this at 6ish in the morning after not having had a solid 20 minutes of sleep for the last 3 nights. After requesting in my reservation that I not be placed in the Africa room because the afore mentioned problems they upgraded my room from a single to a double. Great, right? Except for when I went to the room I quickly noticed that it was right next door to the frickin' Africa room, pretty much the same location. Screaming crack heads on top of the traffic noise now that it's warm in the winter. Thank god I was able to reserve a room in the Pod Hotel for tonight, my last night. PS, I'm pirating someone else's shoddy internet, hotel's doesn't work

Staying here was my first experience in NYC and hostels.  I went cheap and got a 10 person bedroom.  The place is small but cute and in a great location.  It is about 12-14 blocks from the heart of Times Square which is very walkable if you're interested or only 2 or 4 blocks from a train (depends on which one you need), 5 blocks from Macy's and 3 blocks from Madison Square Garden.  They have 2 computers with the Internet, a place to store luggage, and a patio with tables, chairs and umbrellas.  On a suggestion from a co-worker, I brought with me my own bed sheet which I did not use but I did use my own pillow case.  They did not provide towels in the dorm rooms.  The person who checked me was very nice and helpful although a bit slow.  She left me to wait while she finished typing an email so by the time she started to check me in, she had a line and I'm glad I was not the one waiting.  The dorm room had it's own bathroom although there was another bathroom out in the hallway.  Our bathroom had a nice shower but it took awhile for the hot water to kick in and the door didn't close very well so you had to pull it really hard which made a whole lot of noise.  I'm glad I brought ear plugs because the street outside is pretty noisy.  There were plenty of outlets in this room so I never had to wait for an outlet to charge my phone/camera batteries.  The room was pretty small and with 5 bunk beds, it was very tight on space.  I would probably stay there again for the location and price.
