My husband's fav weekend brunch spot before and after he met me cuz he loves the casual atmosphere, consistent food but most importantly because he can just read the paper here while eating.
Food made just the way you like it! I always get the CORNED BEEF HASH & EGGS (over-easy) with brown toast and ask for no butter or it will be soaked... My husband gets his ham and eggs sunny side up (not to dip toast in but to eat the white part first and then gulp the yolk at the end just like his dad does ;)) I have had the western egg sandwich when I wasn't as hungry. It's good too!
Not the best but bottomless coffee.
See ya there one morning! ;)
Oh, wouldn't make a trip to come here as there's likely a good diner in every neighborhood but if you happen to be in the hood or live a block away...
Btw, saw Deborah Harry (Blondie) there! So cool...she apparently lives or comes there often?!
Thanks for reading =)
I completely agree that this is a really comfortable setup. There were some people reading and eating alone, just chilling. However, I was pretty unhappy with the food and some aspects of the service.
The service issue is that the meal came with a soup, which was large. I was about halfway through it when the entree arrived. Great. Thanks for that.
Sounds like this place is a decent bet for breakfast based on other reviews, but I had the misfortune of ordering a more lunch-oriented dish and let us say that it left something to be desired.
I would give it another shot based on the cool layout and the number of other positive reviews.
Solid!
We came in yesterday, a HOT, STICKY, disagreeable day. I won't lie, I was already in a bad mood. Had a small altercation with some idiots at the Apple Store.
But as always, because I usually crave food I see on TV, I was in the mood for spaghetti + meatballs. And Chelsea Square had a very reasonable special for just that plate with a soup or salad.
Being on a tight budget, my girl and I agreed to split the plate. Once we alerted the waiter to that, who was very friendly, he got us a larger split pea soup than normal. He brought us bread [with NON-FROZEN BUTTER!! WHOOO HOO!] and a pitcher of water after I requested it. The spaghetti had THREE meatballs, as opposed to the traditional two. The noodles tasted recently prepared, not too mushy, and just needed a dash of salt and some of the provided parmesan cheese.
Why not four or five stars?
It had a funky smell of sorts when we walked in. Definitely a food smell, but not the expected smell. Also the waiter took way too long to get the ball rolling. Water should've been brought to us IMMEDIATELY.
And even though he DID give us everything we needed and wanted, he didn't come back to check on us. Although he was very nice, and for 11.95, the two of us ate very well.
Stopped here for lunch while cruising around the Chelsea area. Pretty typical ole-timey NY diner/casual restaurant, with worn furniture and homey decor. Kinda like going to grandma's house. I got their fish cakes and spaghetti lunch special, which came with soup (I got the chicken noodle with matzoh ball), and the hubby got the tuna melt special with just chicken noodle soup. We both really liked the soup, very homemade-tasting, which real hand-shredded chicken. My matzoh ball was a bit bland, but it was still pretty good. They gave a basket of challah and raisin bread. The challah was good, but that raisin bread was so dry around the edges I didn't even want to touch it. When we got our main entrees we were both shocked by how big it was. You get a lot for your money, but it's definitely a case of quantity over quality. I liked the hubby's tuna melt a lot better than my pasta. The sauce was too sweet, the noodles a little too al dente, and the fish cakes were very bready. The tuna melt, on the other hand, was perfectly fine tasting, if a bit overwhelmingly large. Overall, 2.5 stars for the food but the friendly efficient service and reasonable prices push it up to 3 stars.
Went there for a late night meal, after a concert.
Food-terrible
Service-ok
seating-ok (bathroom needs some attention.)
Price-average.
Seems to me a lot of reviewers like this place. Bad luck for me? Breakfast may be good?
Prob won't go back--there's a better diner across the street for my late night post-club hunger!!
This is a really cute place for weekend brunch. The restaurant surrounded by windows, perfect for people watching. I don't find too many diners in the neighborhood that have windows and scenery, so this is a nice change. You can't sit outside though, unfortunately. The food is good and comes quick! Prices are very good for the area and really the only thing I don't love about this place is the service. Some of the cats there can be a little slow, even if the place isn't too hopping, but what can you do?
Went in here at 2:30 in the morning on a Monday, and had a fantastically unhealthy fries/bacon/ham and cheese omelet combo. In short, this place delivers on being exactly what it is: an all night, classic New York diner. It's authentic, tasty, and open all the time. Win.
Is it just me, or is a diner with good food hard to find around this town? All of them seem really dumpy with awful food. It's like I can't even get a good omelette anymore. But this place really hit the spot! The service was great, too.
Not even good for a diner. I am dragged to this place with a group of friends quite frequently, and may I say, THERE IS A BETTER DINER ACROSS THE STREET.
The only reason I give it 2 stars and not 1 is because it can't be that bad, if I've eaten there dozens of times, even if every time, I hate it.
The service is sub par even for a diner. I've had a waiter argue with me about how my soda was Diet, and I was Drinking it! Suck it dude! I hate diet soda.
Like I said, I've been dragged there against my will many times, however, if I can ever persuade people to go somewhere else I do.
The veggie burger isn't terrible. It's actually okay. I'm not angry at the food at this place, just the service. I can honestly say that now that I've thought about the veggie burger, I'd eat one right now. I'm pretty sure it's a microwaved pre-fab veggie burger of some sort, but secretly some side of me loves to eat crappy food and bitch about it I guess.
Also, we do take this place over in mass quantities some times with parties of 20-30 screaming obnoxious idiots. Can't really blame them for hating us.
Then again, I can, because this is MY review. 2 stars. None higer.
So I decided I needed to come her sober to determine if those waffles were as delicious as I thought they were.
The prices shocked me at first, but like I said.. the waffles were delicious! And my friends had the chicken fingers ... really good! I love that honey mustard sauce..
I need to go back and determine if this is reality :)
There's something about the atmosphere of this place that is inexplicably appealing. It feels old-timey American, and if it weren't for the traffic/sirens of 23rd St., I'd feel as though the place could be found in a small town. A menu you'd expect of a diner and a generous flow of coffee, which you'll like if you don't prefer it strong.
We went to Chelsea Square Wednesday around 10am. The place was empty - as well is should have been. The server was a bit slow. Perhaps he was waiting on all six of the tables in the place. But the busboy/helper guy kept our coffees full.
We sat next to the big windows and watched the people walk by. Which I really loved.
I always order the same thing at these places. Two eggs over easy. And mine were. However so were my friends who had ordered his over medium. The shot of juice was yummy. The coffee strong. The potatoes crispy and the bread toasty.
I'll definitely go back. Although I alternate with Moonstruck Diner across the street just to change things up.
Update: I was walking by today and noticed a sign in the window. "We serve grits." It was enough to make this Texan girl swoon. I think I'll be hitting up this place again sometime REAL soon.
This is New York diner at its hangover, stress eating, or splurging best. I love their grilled cheese (hangover), the crisp salty fries (stress eating), and the fish and chips (splurging). Services is solid, and the menu is extensive. Down the street from me, this is a great place for New York diner food.
Seated right away and large yummy portions. Excellent service. I love brunch here!!
hmmmm, there's something about this place that made it very attaching to me. i can't explain what it is, though. i just like the old school vibe and the older couples or individuals enjoying their meals. and i won't claim this review to be thorough and extensive because all i've really had there is their burgers, and i love'em!
in my humble opinion, they have some of the best burgers i've had in town and their portions are huge and very decently priced. and somehow, though some of their burgers tend to be greasy, i don't feel like i've just dumped a pile of concrete in my stomach and like i'm about to have a stroke (which is how i felt after eating paul's burger). service is decent too.
i heard that shake shack has the best burgers in town, but still haven't tried them. will they dethrone chelsea square's burgers? to be continued...
My friend and I would come here a LOT to get cheeseburgers at like 1am. They were a tad bit pricey, but realllllly good.
Chelsea Square has a huge and varied menu, and the portions are huge too. Their menu includes a large number of Greek specialties and fresh fish as well as your typical diner food. They have a variety of declious looking cakes on display which I have sadly never gotten the chance to sample. Pleasant atmosphere, and a nice view of the busy Chelsea streets. Was once featured in a Law & Order episode.
I love this place because of its cozy atmosphere! The food is nothing outstanding, but it is very good (I usually get the veggie burger and fries). The atmosphere is old-school diner, not 50s kitsch but nice and somewhat dimly lit with windows on all sides - very good people watching! The servers are always very friendly and attentive. The service has never been slow for me, and I'm usually there late at night.
We go here probably every other week for grilled cheese and french fries. (Though we have gotten other things!) There are many things to pick from that will suit anyone and it is relatively fair priced. The portions are large, with a side of fries being enough for two people. The cozy atmosphere and windows all around are really nice. The only thing bothering us lately is that we never get water refills quickly enough!
