Neighborhood: Manhattan/Chelsea"You don't know what you got til it's gone", isn't that the truth! I was a member of the Sports Center for over 8 years, until a few months ago when I decided to quit and workout at Equinox for free (no details..., but it's all about who you know in this world, isn't it?). During this time, I also had the experience of working out at David Barton Gym and had been to several NYSC's in the past, as guest of friends. With all that in mind, I can say that there is no gym like The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers! This place isn't even a gym, it's a sport complex and I didn't know how good I had it, until I gave it all up for something newer and hipper.
The Sports Center is perfectly located overlooking The Hudson River at 23rd Street. The space is the size of like, three hangers! It is full of natural sunlight and offers stunning views of the water and passing boats. The staff is extremely nice and there is no attitude anywhere, which I found out is a common thing at other gyms... The equipment is state-of-the-art, and there is so much of it you never have to wait. There is no other gym that has the space this gym has!!!! Besides offering the best cardio and lifting equipment, there is an indoor track, sand volleyball court, boxing ring, rock-climbing wall, 3 basketball courts, swimming pool, 2 sun-decks.... the list goes on. You can also get a massage at the spa and have lunch at the cafe. You can literally spend hours at this place. In the summer the sun-decks are an amazing place to take in sun and can be very social at times. The gym, itself, sponsors events on the decks, during the summer. They bring in local restaurants to host the events, and it's free and fun for all. This place is truly like no other!! I love this place and am happy that I will once again, be able to call it home! Check it out!!!

I've mostly been here for bowling. It's a fun place to go, especially if you go for glow bowling. The lanes are pretty wide and clean and they have some cool balls. To me the only drawback is that it's on the pricey side.

Last I went bowling was $60/hr per lane and $25 for parking. Ouch. I have yet to try their rock climbing wall ($20) but have been meaning to. Too bad no tennis courts. A bit out of the way getting there via subway but if you are going to spend half the day there it's worth it. Now get off your lazy buns and go do something! Andale!

Dear Chelsea Piers,
Do you have any idea how much money in potential therapy bills (also not to be forgotten laundry and toiletries) I have saved because you are in my life?
If it wasn't for you, your big high ceilings filled with climbing walls, clean treadmills and the oh so important steam room with unlimited towels I'm not sure I could go on, plus I'd have to actually buy towels and shampoo.
You make living in my closet sized west village closet all so much more bearable.
Now if only you would lower your smoothie prices down from $8.00, I might just propose.

UPDATE: the sundeck is now open and it is the shitttt. right on the water, there is always a nice breeze so even though it was really hot and the sun is beaming on you, you dont really sweat. when you close your eyes, you can really imagine ur anywhere like the beach or something. and the chaise lounge chairs were sooooo comfy!
Also, great for networking and random celeb sightings. PM me for the hookup.

Chelsea Piers to me is what Chucke E. Cheese is for a 6yr old. It's my playground. I joined about 3 weeks ago despite the high cost.. However, i decided to go with it bc i got hooked up w the friends n family deal (waived initiation fee). I don't think i would've afforded it otherwise. So here goes:
i love it bc i play ball there and since i hate shooting and rebounding by myself, a staff member will practice with me for approx 25-40 mins on their break and run drills or play games - thus my game is getting ALOT better. not sure if they would do this with everyone but i made friends with them. playing in the middle of the court i have scenery - ppl playing at the sand volleyball court, runners on the track being trained by their coaches, full court game on 1 or 2 courts, and ppl boxing either by themselves or getting lessons. yeah, i see all this standing in one spot shooting foul shots. Then there's a cafe/lounge in the main area where you can eat good sushi (trust me. it's good, i'm picky with sushi), sandwiches, salads, and my fave - edamame. You can rest, eat, read the paper, and then go back to working out. When you sign up, you get 2 free personal training sessions, 2 specialty training sessions (swimming, pilates, boxing, or rock climbing), and a fitness evaluation. i can't even list everything they have here bc then this review would never end. What i look forward to is them opening up the sun deck where i can chill, lay, and tan. Afterwards i can jump into their 6-lane 25yrd swimming pool! This place is like a mini community where random people say hi and talk to me. Seems like an easy place to make friends. Every evening on my way out to the bus stop (towards 23rd st), I take a slow stroll along the piers looking into the huge windows where there's organized bball and soccer games going on and then a huge gymnasium of little girls training doing flips on balance beams and whatnot. Best part - taking in the beautiful view of the sun setting along the river. Priceless...

Great gym. Enormous yet cozy. And it's not crowded most of the times.
I love the great varieties of sports(e.g. boxing, rock climbing, basketball, volleyball, swimming) you can actually do at the sports center and you will never get bored.
Plus i love their swimming pool! its of 25 meter size and is surrounded by a great river view. You also can chill out at the jacuzzi.
The locker rooms are clean, spacious, and have all the toiletries you need (shampoo, conditioner, razors, cotton balls). Steam room has cool lighting and is relaxing.
Feel free to contact me as I have some extra one week passes.

Chelsea Piers if about 5 tennis courts short of being paradise, but given that it is actually built on piers and that it is in Manhattan, it is all forgiven. Pricey, but you get what you pay for. Excellent service, clean locker rooms, soft towels, huge showers (I think you could easily have a foursome in one of those), clean sauna/steam room/pools - EVERYTHING is really clean and well maintained. The gym is exquisite and massive. New equipment, nothing is out of order, no lines anywhere. Eric P. and I went rock climbing here and boy oh boy that was FUNNN, not to mention that our heteroflexible instructor was quite the hottie. They have an indoor track, in Manhattan... CRAZY! A beach volleyball court, multiple basketball courts, a golf driving range, skating rink among a variety of other facilities, amenities and services - you name it! They do need to upgrade all the cardio machines with personal televisions though, but they have plenty of tellies all over, so it's not so bad. I love this place and the day I move to Chelsea/West Village, I will join it, hands down, while NYSC, Crunch and Equinox can go to hell. I would give Chelsea Piers a 6th star if it had tennis courts.

This place is fantastic! Went here (Pier Sixty, that is) for a company dinner, and WOW, they pulled out all the stops! Everything from the cocktail hour to the reception after...any and every detail was looked after.
I don't know much about the sports center here, but I love the Sky Rink! I'm actually thinking about taking up skating lessons here (i'm not going to even think about how expensive that'll be).
Loses a star because this place is just plain ole' far...not near a damn subway, taxis are seldom, just an odd but beautiful location. Oh well...

For those of us who have dared to complain of being tired of living in the city, there's Chelsea Piers. Fun and singular activities so you won't need to spend that much time at home. Easy-access by mass transportation.
Great family-oriented and relaxed environment.

I'm just reviewing the Sky Rink and the batting cage. Haven't been to the Fitness Club yet.
+1 for a nice indoor batting cage.
-1 Way too pricey for the FS session. I did save a little by paying for packs of 10, but I feel funny about doing that given that I only visit NYC once a year and I only skate at CP when I have a lesson there. (Thankfully the FS book of 10 NEVER expires!!!) :-)
+1 for wonderfully smooth ice
+1 for my wonderful coach in NYC! He's the main reason I come back to the Sky Rink year after year. Very technical, detailed, yet not physics "over my head" type. LOVE the guy!!!

I am not wealthy, but I want my money's worth. I've only worked out at Chelsea Piers once so far (at the time of this review), but that was enough to encourage me to join.
I love that there are machines for any body part you desire to develop. I also like the 'country club' environment which is ripe for networking.
The towel service and huge showers exceed my expectations. There are bath towels AND wash cloths at every turn. The shower is huge and super private. I can take my clothes into the shower and change there without my clothes getting wet. It is awesome.
I also love that you can work out, lounge, eat, and work out more. It really is a place that you can stay at all day. I saw one gentleman napping on the sofa upstairs.
Minus one star for distance. The bike rack is not secure so getting there can pose a challenge depending on the weather. Even on a sunny day, windy weather can make a skate or scooter ride difficult. This gym is more ideal for people nearby or with cars/motorcycles. I joined anyway. Oh well. I hope getting there doesn't prove to be too great a problem.

I have to take a star off for how expensive this place can get (and very quickly at that) but overall, rock on. Anything you want, you can do! They also have corporate event services, which looks like a cool thing, although we haven't taken advantage yet.

A wise chinese man once said to me "Let's play golf at chelsea piers." So we did.
Granted neither of us really play golf. And it was a frigid December day. But we worked up quite a sweat smacking those golf balls towards the hudson (echoes of seinfeld, anyone?)... I even managed to hit the ball collecting cart 3 times, for an overall success rate of about 2% -- hopefully I'll improve with more practice. The driving range stalls even have conduction heaters to keep you toasty warm. i was initially unhappy about paying $25 to hit a bunch of balls, but I had a REALLY fun time. (btw, if multiple people are going, you can save money by having one person rent all the golf clubs needed for the group rather than renting them individually)
I've also been to chelsea piers for a birthday bowling party, and my college senior prom. Both events were fun. A great place to spend some time (and money) when you're looking for something fun to do during the day besides visiting museums.

It was a clear black night, a clear white moon, Lisa was on the streets, trying to consume...on a mission trying to find, the perfect (boxing) gym. Sadly, I don't really think this is it, but since Chelsea Piers offers so much more, I'm highly thinking of joining.
A typical boxing workout:
A round of jumping rope
A round of shadow boxing
3-4 rounds of focus mitts with the instructor
2-3 rounds of bag work
2-3 rounds of Focus mitts with some other guy who is only so-so at holding mitts
1-2 rounds of focus mitts with the instructor
3x30 jumping back and forth over a ball
Leg lifts
Technique wise, it's a fine class, though I see plenty of other students with bad habits that were never corrected (stiff shoulders, non-extension of punches, etc.) though can you really blame the instructor for that? I guess just a different level of priority.
As for the facility itself, I don't really think it's that swanky. The interiors of Equinox are much better, but I'm always seeing this place getting cleaned!
I'm still on the fence about membership...In comparison to boxing gym membership rates, this place is really not that expensive.

I moved to New York last November, and as a swimmer I was a fish out of water without a place to swim. I found Chelsea Piers Sports Center extremely accomodating given my pool snobbery, but was disenchanted by the amount it costs! The facility itself is wonderful and it houses everything! 4 stars for it's awesome'ness, minus 1 for the overpriced factor.

This place is swanky. I could never afford it, but I was here for a company retreat, and really felt like I was in a different place. This doesn't even seem like it'd be in New York. It almost feels like Southern California, Florida, or maybe even Navy Pier in Chicago.
It's an experience. Too bad it's way on the westside. A bit hard for me to do. (Not that it matters, I'm poor). Even the bathrooms are phenomenal! Admittedly I'm simple, so seeing mouthwash and lotion dispensers wow'd me. They even provided hair gel!
We participated in a series of team building events that included everything from bowling to rock climbing.
The amenities here are insane, and I only scratched the surface.
This place opened just as I was starting my career in NYC.
I could never afford to go on my entry level Nonprofiteers's salary but blessed be it's beautiful.
I enjoyed just walking over here during lunch and sitting at the water.
I laughed as they opened up a fee based sun deck during the summer, I appreciate a place that knows how to work the gays for their precious dollars and at this point in NY history Chelsea was the place to be.
On a recent trek back I found that they have maintained its crisp feel and I think that's a great accomplishment. Unless a place maintains a diligent renewal it easily falls into a has been status.
There have been promises to bring a Chelsea Piers or Chelsea Piers clone to SF ever scone I arrived here over 6 years ago but something tells me I'll be gone before this ever gets close to going.

If I could afford it, I would def be a member; the facilities are great, the locker rooms are super clean, it's just a great atmosphere, you don't even feel like you're in a stuffy gym

Their adult gymnastics program is the best in the city. They have classes from entry level through elite. You can also take ice-skating classes, rock climb, learn to be a trapeze artist and more. They even have a spa. This is the sports enthusiasts dream!

Ever see that episode of Seinfeld where Kramer hits golf balls into the Hudson? Yep, that's Chelsea Piers Golf Club. A four-tiered range that overlooks the grimy waters of the Hudson.
They take advantage of the fact that they're the only driving range in all of Manhattan, and price accordingly. A $20 ball card will fetch you a mere 118 off-peak balls or 80 peak-time balls. Everything is automated (which is a blessing for lazy people, not unlike myself) so you insert your card in the machine, and one ball at a time comes out of the adjustable-height tee. Every stall also has heat, which keeps this place open year-round, and your hands from developing frostbite. They use Srixon range balls, which aren't V1X's, but don't feel like you're trying to swing at oddly shaped rocks either. The pro shop here is well-equipped for its size, and they did a great job re-gripping my clubs a couple months ago.
Oh, and if you were really thinking about hitting golf balls over the ridiculously tall netting, think again. It's not a walk in the park.

In my opinion one of the best adult hockey leagues in the city. I've been playing there for 3 years now and it just continues to get better and better. They've recently expanded and upgraded their facilities to include more parking. Extremely accessible, very affordable, and the view is awe inspiring.

A manhattanite can find any source of activity here at Chelsea Piers. From rock climbing and bowling to dancing and drinking. Chelsea Piers offers up a wide assortment of activities for all ages. The one drawback, it is very expensive to do pretty much anything here.
I've been a member for a year now and must say its fucking luxurious. Yesterday I didn't even work out. I tanned on the deck overlooking the mighty Hudson, then had a pedicure in the amazing spa, then had fabulous sushi and watched the world cup final. At what other gym can you do all that? Its more like a country club.

When you are at Chelsea Piers, it doesn't even feel like you're in NY. Which could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your mood.
They have 3 or 4 snack bars/restaurants. I like to order a batch of chili cheese fries and sit on one of the benches in the sun and watch the boats.
So here's the deal: You don't have to be a member to go, unless you want to go to the Sports Center gym. The gym has a monthly membership, OR if you spend 75 bucks in the spa, you get a free day at the gym, including use of the rock wall, pool, and sun deck.
Even if you don't go to the gym, the rest of it is nice and surprisingly inexpensive. Batting cages: $2 for 10 balls, driving range: $20 for 118 balls (4 levels!). There's a bowling alley here too, and dinner/drink cruises and an ice skating rink.
In conclusion, Chelsea Piers is fun.

This is a fun place. If you are into sports this is the place to be.
I love Chelsea Piers! I went here recently for a "corporate team building' outing and I had so much fun. We played beach volleyball on a court that was filled with sand, did jousting with the giant q-tips, and had a rock climbing relay. Their climbin wall is probably one of the best I have been on! One of the most impressive things was the locker room- which was incredibly clean, modern and provided a lot of little things that made a big difference (hair dryers, diffusers, hair gel, moisturizer); the ladies locker room even has a little vanity table section where u can primp yourself post-workout!

Ahhh Chelsea Piers. If you are ever bored on the weekend, call a friend and come here. I would recommend you just pay the membership fee. If you work out a lot, this is the place for you. Swimming pool, lifting room, machines, private classes, personal training, beach volleyball (with real sand), track, and a rock wall. They have lots of places to get great, healthy (or not healthy) food. They also have a nice driving range and golf classes. If you don't like to work out so much (or your girlfriend doesn't), you can just relax at the luxurious spa. The public skating is great at sky rink, but can get extremely crowded with terrible skaters on the weekend. If you have never been the chelsea piers, your missing out on one of the best perks of living in New York.

CP is a great place overall, and you can really have a great recreational experience there.
However, I must say it is not really a good place for a SPA experience. Honestly, the noise from the gym is really distracting, as well as the conversations outside the treatment rooms. Although the staff is good, they cannot make up for the level of noise you are exposed to while getting your message, trying to relax.
