Please note that the prior reviews are a bit outdated.
The Tasting Room is located in the heart of Newberg, right on highway 99, and is open daily from 11:00a to 5:00p. You have two options for tasting: a basic flight flight for $5 or their reserve wines for $10. Like most of the places we visited, they won't charge you a tasting fee if you purchase some wine.
We decided to sample their reserve wines and while I would have preferred to be at the vineyard, the tasting room is a beautiful modern space. The wines are excellent and unlike most other wineries in the area, they are known for the quality of their white wines as well as their pinot noir. I particularly enjoyed the pinot gris which isn't cloyingly sweet.
The winery itself is only open for special events.

Chehalem Winery has just opened this new tasting room off the 99. It's a must-stop for those tasting along the way. The room is large, spacious, and warm, with abstract art paintings gracing the red brick walls (I think they were red brick...at least, that's the warm feeling I get in my mind's eye right now about the whole place in general).
The wine bar is somewhat small, but there is plenty of room to stand around. The staff is very knowledgeable, kind, and gracious--enjoy this before W Valley gets Napafied!
The parking lot area could use an upgrade, as can the area around this tasting room. You could easily miss it because its surrounds will look to you like a junkyard, especially if you're an out-of-towner like me driving BUZZED on the 99. But, the building itself and the ambience within is urban-grunge-chic. Awesome combination.
And the wines? First-rate. Taste for yourself....and ask the servers for the difference in the terroir of their vineyards, and see if you can taste the differences yourself...or just nod your head in polite demi-understanding as the nice warm haze of Oregon pinot takes over.......
Stop teasing me you tantalizing salmon colored Rose! One minus star because while they had a Rose on the shelf... it was sold out! Damn you all in the know who bought it before me. I want it even more now.
Call ahead for an appt... It's really easy, I left a vmail on Friday (the morning we went down to Portland) and they called me back on Sat morning - and scheduled an appointment for 3pm that day. so convenient!
we had a great time, the guy manning the store gave us lots of delish crackers to nosh on - probably bc I was nearing the point of being slightly buzzed..

I loved the Pinot's and the whites here! Some of the better Pinot's i tasted on our Northwest wine tour. Please call ahead and make an appointment though.
Wine tasting was cool as we just sat around a metallic table, listened to some trippy music, and got crunken...

You must make an appointment if you want to do a tasting. Their tasting is free - the only free one we've been to in our 2 day wine tasting tour. Jason was the one who did the tasting with us and had a table set up with glasses ready for our arrival. It was nice to be able to listen to him explain the wine and have the whole place to ourselves to enjoy. We tried 6 or 7, almost 1/2 white and 1/2 reds. We liked some of the wines, particular the pinot gris and reserve pinot noir so we got a few of each. You should check this winery out if you're in the area.

This is my absolute favorite vineyard anywhere! They are not usually open to the public. However, the day after Thanksgiving is a big event in Oregon wine country and they are open then. I make a pilgrimage there every year when I am back home. My mom also joined their wine club so she goes to pick up her shipments a couple times a year. The fact is their pinot noirs are fabulous and not at all overpriced. I frequently will taste very expensive pinots and go, "eh, Chahalem is better and cheaper." If you do visit when they are open on Thanksgiving weekend it is a rustic good time. It isn't like in California where everything is set up for hospitality. They basically have the a warehouse/barn open with wine barrels set up as tasting stations. Cheese and crackers. etc, are set out that pair nicely with each wine being tasted. The people pouring work there and really know their stuff. They have a real passion for the wine and the land and are happy to answer any of your questions. And boy do they make excellent wine. Like most of the Willamette Valley they specialize in pinot noir and pinot gris. They are great at both. If you see their wine in the store, I would highly recommend trying it out. You won't be disappointed.
