I travel for business and have had the pleasure of dining  in some of the finest steak houses in the country. Cheeves is one of those truly rare finds you wouldn't expect in little Temple Texas. It is a special occasion restaurant and not recommended if your a coupon clipper.  It's a steak house so order steak, the other dishes are great but like I said its a steak house.  The service is excellent and the staff is knowledgable about the products and the wine selection is what you would expect at a white tablecloth restaurant.

Have the baked Brie appetizer, a tenderloin any way you like it, and save room for the Bananas Foster and coffee.

If you want to spend the money and be fooled....

Decor and location is very nice. Great looking establishment. Service was mediocre. Expect more when I am paying these prices.

My wife and I made 7:30 PM reservations for a special occasion and arrived on time dressed for our evening. Was told that our table wasn't ready and that we would have to wait at the bar until someone came and "got us". I asked the individual what would the purpose of a reservation be if we had to wait? Her response was a blank look and an "I don't know". I should have taken this as an omen and left.

We waited at the bar sipping our drinks amongst Temple's finest in baseball caps, shorts, wife beaters, etc being loud and obnoxious. We should have left.

We were finally seated approximately 30 minutes later upstairs at a cozy table for two. And by "cozy" I mean a table for two elbows and nothing else. Jammed in a corner. Like a table setting of an afterthought. Next to a huge party of the same Temple's finest from the bar. We couldn't hear ourselves think. We should have left.

We started with the scallops which were rubbery. Not good, really. Most of you should already know the response this exact thing solicits from Chef Gordon Ramsey. We should have ordered something else. Wait. We should have just left.

We both had the rib eye. Ordered the same, medium rare. While I can never be sure, since I didn't bring it to the attention of the waitstaff, my "rib eye" wasn't a rib eye. It was very lean and very firm. You know how a rib eye is marbled and "softer to teh touch"? Not this one. Anyhow, both were overcooked. Dry. Didn't look seasoned. Flavorless. I guess the waitress asking if we needed any "steak sauce" should have been a HUGE sign. We should have left.

Normally at this point I send the orders back, but based on the entire evening going the way it was going, we just wanted to leave. Our evening wasn't what we imagined it to be. Between the loud, obnoxious party right next to us, the food,  and the service we just wanted to get the heck out of there.

Bottom line? I paid premiere Austin steakhouse quality and got something that I gave to my dogs when we got home. It was our first visit and our last. We will continue to take our money to Austin.

We should have never came here.

Expensive but worth the money. My brother came back from Iraq and the family decided to treat him for a fancy meal. The only problem was he just wanted a burger. Now when I say family I am just talking about us rowdy brothers and sister in law. My one brother he suggested this place  wouldnt take no for an answer and said "We must eat here! You came back from Iraq."
I put my two cents in and said "Well I cant afford it, I'm freakin' broke."
So it ends up that my brother who just came back from Iraq treats us to this place. Feeling like scumbag even more I order oysters for an appetizer and wine. Hey the war hero was paying.
He got the steak, I got the salmon, my other brother ordered, well I dont remember what he ordered...the food was wonderful the atmosphere was very relaxing. Its a pricey place for being in such a small town. But I recommend this place to anyone who wants a fine dining experience and does not want to travel to a big City for it. The staff are also friendly. And please plan to come here instead of last minute decision making as we did.

Great meal. Excellent service. When you pay for a high priced meal
The food better be good. They were spot on.
My only knock was the chairs were very uncomfortable. The seat bottoms need to be replaced.

Lovely dining experience in Temple! I went here with two friends and was pleasantly surprised with the interior and vibe of the restaurant. I ordered a Carribean salmon which came with a Mango chutney and the grape salad; both were simply divine. We went around 2 p.m. on a Wednesday and didn't find any rush. The food is a little bit pricey but worth it. The only thing which bothered me was our waiter who seemed eager to pick up our plates before we were finished eating. Other than that the service was great, atmosphere was relaxing, and food was delicious. I would come back here with a close group of friends very soon.

Now I know I'm a bit of an anomaly here in Texas, being a late-night diner, and grateful, I am that Cheeves Bros. serves up until 10 PM. But the prices are comically high, effectively discouraging all but the horsey set  (and I don't mean cowboys) from enjoying a nice meal out. The rest of Temple's hoi polloi are relegated to the slew of chain slop shops and obnoxious cookie-cutter theme restaurants, like Cracker Barrel, few of which do not mysteriously close down at sundown.

So Cheeves Bros. goes by the idea that their price structure actually keeps the riff-raff out (according to the bartender).

Anyway, The only steaks that weren't in the $52.00 range were the Steak Diane and the Steak...I forgot the name, but it was smothered in way too much cheese for the quality of meat they are claiming to purvey.  My steak was redolent of a $19.00 Carne Asada Enchilada, there was so much cheese and (sauce?). Ack...

The Caprese Salad, which was touted to be prepared with Heirloom Tomatoes, was in fact made with sliced Romas, then to add further insult, an altogether ghastly faux paus of drowning the Caprese with Balsamic Reduction succeeded only in murdering the subtle sweetness and natural tanginess good, fresh mozzarella and ripe tomatoes promise.

Someone should take the proceeds from a couple of their steaks and send their cook to chef school.

Cheeves Bros. is all smoke and mirrors, and I'd go so far as to surmise that their demographic consists almost exclusively of those  dead set on getting laid. That is the only group I can imagine would  fall for that dog and pony show.

    So much for the riff-raff.

Arguably one of the finest dinning experiences in Central Texas. The staff is friendly, the food is excellent, but you pay for it!

Some of the best steak I have ever eaten. I really like their lettuce wedge. I'm not a big blue cheese fan, but I really like this wedge.

I eat here regularly for lunch when interviewing.  The food is consistently excellent, my lunchtime favorites are the smoked salmon wrap and the bleu burger.  I am not a fan of the lobster bisque or French onion soup although they seem to be popular items...to each his own.  This is the finest restaurant in Temple and the steaks are certainly better than TXLC, Logans, Roadhouse, etc but I'm not sure they justify the cost - they are definitely not on par with Ruth's Chris, Capital Grille, Morton's and the like.  All in all, love coming here for lunch on the company dime but for MY money, I'd rather head down to Austin for a fine dining dinner.

Yum!  My husband and I are foodie steak lovers and this place exceeded our expectations.  The steak was tender, juicy and oh so good!  My hubby said it was second to Craftsteak in Las Vegas and that says a lot!  Go here if you want to treat yourself or someone you love.

I ate here while on business based on a recommendation from the front desk staff.   First of all, be prepared to dish out some dough for a meal here... BUT the meal will absolutely be worth the cost!

I think I had the best steak I have ever eaten here at Cheeve's brothers.  It was the Prime Rib, slow cooked for hours.  My mouth is watering as I reflect on this slice of tender, buttery, juicy cow flesh.  And the creamed spinach that accompanied it was beyond perfect.  I simply had no room for more.

The wait staff made my feel like a million bucks and the ambiance, though a little dark, was just incredible.  NOT what you'd expect from this town, but worth the search.

If you're in Temple and you have a hundred bucks(or more) to spend, stop at Cheeve's.

Finally got to check this place out, it's has a very nice ambiance and upscale setting.  The place was surprisingly busy for a week night, and since it's highly rated I will be extra critical and specific in my review and breakdown why this fell just short of a perfect (5 star) review:

Service:  was excellent.  Very friendly valet attendant, gets the door, greeted by the hostess and seated promptly.  Our waiter was young but very professional.  Filled our drinks accordingly and was prompt.

    Food:
    - Shrimp appetizer wrapped in bacon was superb.  Some of the best shrimp I've ever had - large and plump.

    - Lobster Bisque:  I was excited to try this after reading some of the reviews, I gotta say it was good but it's very rich as you can tell there's tons of butter in it.  If that's your thingy then go for it, but I could feel my arteries getting coated w/ every spoonful.  Still it was very good bisque, but I don't think I'd get this all the time.

    - Tenderloin w/ Peppercorn seasoning:  was unbelievable!  Literally the best piece of meat (*ah-hem*) that I've had in soooo long!  Cooked to perfection, the waiter asks you to cut into your steak as he shines a flashlight on it so you can see if it's done to your liking.  The sauce was superb, and not too buttery either - - a big plus.  Tons of kudos here.

    - Sweet Potato (baked):  was also excellent!  It's a huge potato, I got butter and cinnamon on the side, and it was perfectly cooked and great quality.

    - Greg Norman Pinot Noir: was a dandy for sure.  Greg hit a hole in one w/ this one, it's $12 a glass and you'll want more - get the bottle.

    - The Bill:  This is where I think they fall a tad short of a perfect score.  It was $132 for all that mentioned above (3 glasses of wine + 2 bowls of bisque + 1 twelve-ounce tenderloin w/ potato + 1 iceberg lettuce w/ blue cheese).  That tenderloin alone was $52 (WTF?), and I think that's about $10-15 too high, but like I said, it was a good piece of meat.

So if you don't mind paying the premium mark-up prices here, then this is your place for sure.  There's a nice crowd, very professional and upscale, it's not too noisy, great wine and service, excellent steak, and buttery bisque.  If you're watching your wallet then I'd at least try them out for lunch - the price is still somewhat high but no where near dinner's range.

I was wondering what they were doing with all these cows grazing in the Hill Country. After visiting Cheeves Brothers, I believe that the most tender one landed on my plate.

Opened in 2002 in what used to be a department store, this restaurant with high ceiling and original decor is a staple of Texas Steakhouses. The waiters wearing the traditional white apron provide an impeccable service and the food... oh the food!

The Cajun crawfish bake we ordered as appetizer was incredible.

Before continuing with the food, I would like to divert slightly on the pricing.
My Merlot Tenderloin was $43. I thought was was quite expensive for a 9oz piece of meat. Then I realized it came with soup/salad and 1 side!

I chose the French Onion soup. it was quite a generous portion and I also got to taste the Lobster Bisque. They were really good soups. Rich.Flavorful. But they were nothing compared to.. THE Tenderloin!

Perfectly cooked to my taste, so tender it melted in the mouth. The Merlot sauce was slightly too sweet for me but the amount was appropriate so it wan't bothersome. I also tried the wild mushroom tenderloin that was actually even better than mine.

The sweet potato was baked in Rosin which made it oh so tender and delicious. My dinner partners all went with the regular baked potatoes and loved them as well.

The down side of this meal is that we were too full for dessert so I have no idea if they are any good.

All in all a great place for fine dinning north of Austin. I hope to go back next time I'm in Texas because I've been drooling since I started writing this review!

    wow
So I'm not from Temple, I'm here doing an internship with the VHA, and I heard a lot of good things about this place.
Cheeves. Wow... this place doesn't even look or belong in a place like Temple.
    happy hour.. everydaay!
It was amazing. The atmosphere, the drinks, and of course... the food are superb.

I ate the prime rib sandwich with a grape salad. WOW. I don't know where to start. The grape salad is a MUST to try there. It was perfect and full of flavor.
The sandwich.. wowww.. WOW. I'm definitely going back for that sandwich again.

The drinks are good too.. I ordered my vodka and club soda with lime juice. It was good.
Although when I asked the waiter to bring me some lime juice with my drink, she proceeded to bring me limes and said.. " we didn't have any juice but here are some limes"
hmmm.. I just think it would have taken someone at the bar maximum a minute to squeeze a lime or two into my drink.

Anyway... other than that slight detail, i loved that place and will be returning there on friday! :)

What an experience of food in the beautiful Hill Country of Texas.

The location is in old downtown Temple, Texas, home of Scott and White hospital as well as the fine people of the hill country of Texas. The service was delightful with a wonderful host greeting us at the door and making our group feel more than welcome.

The menu selections were pretty larged with salads, sandwiches and entrees ranging from the 9 to 15 dollar price range for lunch and an extensive and expensive steak list for a nice night on the town.

The food was exquisite and quite tasty. I had the grape salad. They also offer up bread prior to the meal which is phenomenal. I had the caribbean jerk chicken which was tasty and the salsa side salad was amazing. I will definately be headed back for seconds.

Was a retirement party for one of our company VPs. Didn't hear one person from the group of twenty plus people with a complaint about the food.
We were more than a little cramped in the upstairs private room, but everbody managed.
Not that far to drive from Killeen for a pleasant meal in old town Temple.
Take a tip - use the valet parking.

I ate here for lunch around 2pm after an interview with company for a position in town. I got the ponchatrain chicken entrée which was very good I will say! Two perfectly cooked chicken breast topped with a mild cheese mushroom sauce. Came with rice pilaf which was just the right portion and cooked just long enough without being mushy as rice often is when ordering out. Not bad at all for 11 dollars in my book. Service was quick, friendly and very polite. Very upscale atmosphere with a relaxing vibe.

Went to Cheeves 1/13/11 evening with party of 9. All meals were superb. Steak, scallops, salmon, sea bass were all very well done. Side items were equally well prepared. Bananas foster and grape salad deserts were to die for.  Would recommend to anyone wanting a good meal and nice environment.
