This place is pretty awesome, a taqueria inside a mexican supermarket. So good! Makes me believe the food is more fresh =) The carne asada nachos are delicious and filling. My only gripe is they dont have black beans at all. I mean, all the taquerias i've been to asked me "what kinda bean?" so that was dissapointing. I'll have to go back and try their burrito, definitely a popular place to go to and if you want to eat here, you'll have to eat outside, after all its still a supermarket.
Some really bomb ass food here. Ordered the carne asada burrito with extra pico de gallo, and a squeeze of lime and it was PURE CRACK! so delicious.
Minus one star just because it's a tad bit on the expensive side. With tax and everything, the burrito cost like $7. Even though it was good, thats alot more then what I expected to pay at a small supermarket taqueria.
I really love how this place can sell you whatever you want from Mexico. Being brought up in a family of Mexico City residents, this really gives me a flavor of home. My only issue is that the prices are a little high, I mean - I know you had to drive this up from the border but come on!

They have a lot of Chavez markets in Redwood City where my gf lives. The Caldo De Res is AWESOME! Don't get it anywhere else.
While standing in line I noticed a posted picture of CARNE ASADA FRIES! I will be back to try them! Unfortunately So Cal has the best Carne Asada Fries. Hopefully these will be just as good!

My SO came back from school and decided that he was going to make his high-maintenance girl as down to Earth as possible.
I swear, I am very down-to-earth. I don't expect caviar and champagne!
Driving around the McKee area, he drops hints of pizza, burritos, Lee's, which I reply curtly, "No. I want real food, please?"
Not to say that those aren't real food -- I was just thinking Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and Man, Lee's again?
So we were at Kohl's buying a gift for one of our mutual friends when he said .. Let's go to Chavez Market.
Let's eat real Mexican food. So we enter through the door, where our security guard takes our shopping bags. We order. I'm given a giant fried fish. He, a shrimp burrito or so.
I'm glad I went. I can't describe the fun atmosphere or the cute fish looking at me, dead on my plate, but the food was delicious and I loved the friendly waiters.

My friend lives really close to chavez and after being seperated when we were little for 13 years my espanol has gotten better thanks to his mom ehem also my nanny. I was there with my sis for the cinco de mayo dinner. she forgot what "corn" was in spanish so I helped her out. hooray! Very very fresh meat. Some or the chicken is already marinated for you so you don't have to buy meat 1 day ahead (the marinate is a bit spicy btw and around $2.99/lb?). To your left when entering they'll have the panderia section with doughnuts and mexican bread. I like the ensanada because it's 99 cents. Suprisingly there's asian grocery somewhere in the store where they sell kimchee instant ramen, condensed milk and other stuff I forgot. On the veggie/fruit section cilantro is 3/ $0.99! What a deal! Cheese is vry expensive. The most expensive is $5 and $3 may be the cheapest. I wish my nanny would take me to chavez whenever she goes :)
I was introduced to Chavez by a coworker to swears by the food and the overall store experience. I went there during lunch one beautiful sunny day. I order the super burrito with al pastor (spicy pork that spins on the rotis). I requested that they grill the burrito (thanks Taco bell) to give me a firmer texture on the tortilla. I sat down with my super buritto and my papaya fresca. I peel off the foil wrapper and took a bit. I wasn't very impress at first. I then was informed to squeeze some fresh limes onto my burrito to bring out the spices of the al pastor. After this bit of information, the meat was well seasoned and tastey... i usually am a light eater, but that burrito was soo good that i ate it all... washed it down with that papaya ... what a meal...!?!?!
I also check out the meats they have... excellent choices, fresh and very clean butchering area. I would buy my meats here for the up coming summer bbqs. The eye candy isn't that bad either... lovely panderia section too...
I dragged my GF here against her will, she's a picky eater (Dunno why she a yelper =P).
I ordered a shrimp burrito, it didn't taste that great. But I'm sure the other items on the menu are better. My gf ordered some type of fish with rice, she said it was good. It's pretty expensive for a Mexican restaurant.
Overall: Average

My guy and I finally tried the infamous taqueria inside of Chavez supermarket and I'm glad that I believed the hype! I ordered a super carne asada taco and a regular carne asada taco and both were pretty tasty. I must admit that the super taco scared me because when I opened it I saw a humongous glop of guacamole on the top. Once I got it home I was able to disassemble it so it wasn't a problem for long. You definitely don't want to be eating this before you are about to go out somewhere- but I just wanted to get my grub on- and the super taco hit the spot! I will definitely be back to shop- the place is well lit and the gigantic security guard in the front made me feel safe.

If it wasn't for the taqueria in here-I'd think I'd die without my obsession and love of a damn good, wet burrito or some Pollo Asado cooked to perfection. Everything down here in East SJ where I work just a walk away.....Sucks....except for here and the Italian deli about a 1/2 mile away. The burritos are HUGE and they make everything the way you want it. They also have Caldo De Res-which is a beef soup with veggies. Get enough limon (lime) and you got the Filipino dish, Sinigan. I usually eat this if I'm sicky.
The pollow asado is better than any stupid pollo loco. It comes with rice (I asked for enchilada sauce on top and they totally worked it out!) and beans with a real, green salad. Not a piece of iceberg lettuce found at all. I inhaled that chicken today and I showed no mercy.
They also make fresh daily their agua fresca with real fruit and no corn syrup added.
Not too long ago, after coming back from Belize-I craved pineapple, because that was all I pretty much ate down there besides barracuda, Fran's Cheesecake on Caye Caulker, and stew chicken.
I wanted a big, gigantic, juicy pineapple seeping with sweet, tangy, ultra yummy goodness. I found it here.
I craved Oaxacan cheese one day-bang. got it in hand.
Chavez Supermarket is my savior for my San Francisco foodie tongue.
Feed me.

I LOVE THIS PLACE! :)
I first went to this supermarket when I read a review that said they had awesome al pastor meat. The first time I stepped foot in there, I noticed how CLEAN and organized EVERYTHING was! I saw the taqueria and how it looked like a lil restaurant inside a big store. How cute, I thought! I bought the marinated al pastor and chicken from the meat aisle because we were bbq'n but I swore to come back and try the taqueria sooner than later...and return I did! :) I returned to the Chavez market in Sunnyvale...so go to that store location to get the review! LOL

GREAT Market! The meat here is always fresh. Staff is always friendly. I haven't eaten at the restaurant inside but the food always smells great. I agree with my fellow yelpers that it is very clean.
I love love love ethnic markets! I gave Chavez a try today and I was super impressed. It smelled delicious as I passed the taqueria side. I am going to have to come try those famous tacos everyone keeps rating.
When I reached the aisles I was in awe. NEAT, CLEAN rows of food filled to the front as if no one had shopped there ever.
Produce section was amazing. Everything was perfectly piled and displayed as if the produce fairy had just left. Prices weren't too bad either. I bought a huge ripe avocado for $1.19.
Marniated Chicken was a hit! $2.69/lb. They exculsively carry Harris Ranch red meat! I will be back to try!
Salsa: You can never go wrong with some hot red salsa! $1.70 for a 1/2 lb. tub. Tortillas were super fresh too! Still steaming hot in the bag!
Although the market is in a rough part of town, I will definatley venture down and shop in this latin oasis! Move over Mi Pueblo!

Drove by this place more times than I can remember...why we never bothered to check this place out until today? No clue except we are lame!
We went in because I wanted a taco and figured their tacqueria can't e that bad...it ain't bad at all, actually it's quite the BOMB! Damn, the taco was fantastic! For $2.29, they piled a little mountain of your choice of meat on top of the corn tortilla along with the toppings you want - cheese, salsa, hot sauce, onion, cilantro, guacamole for $0.50. The horchata was so tasty - not watery like many other places. The strawberry fresca was very good too - my nieces loved it! We wanted to try other items but we were full.
The market itself it very clean with spacious aisles. When you first walk in, you are just mesmerized with the many many pastries that are displayed in the glass cases - everything looked so good and it's only 5 for $2.00...we just wish what some of the baked goods were...but my niece had her eye on the cheese cake. The baked goods are fresh...the bakery is in the back where there are more goodies from cakes to jello. The meat section is fantastic - I was thrilled to see the fresh salsa, ceviche, guacamole, yogurt...marinated meat (fajita beef, chicken or pork)...I already have a Mexican themed party planned in my head!
We had a great time - the nieces enjoyed walking the aisles and spotting interesting items, listening to music while spinning and spinning, laughing...just enjoyed ourselves like a mini outing.
Great place...we are looking forward to visiting the one closer to home in Redwood City.
I love that this place it's so clean.
This place is great, although I'm still a little sad that Hancock Fabrics is gone.. and Chavez has taken over, but that's okay. Their taqueria has helped ease the pain. Finally, a taqueria (near home) that takes cards! Like the store, the taqueria has lots to choose from.. and also, while I was waiting for my burrito, I noticed they cater..
Hm.. I've only had their burritos - I think it's time to explore more of their menu!
BTW.. good luck with finding parking. I've never had trouble bc I avoid the plaza's peak hours. But don't be too turned off when looking for parking - Come on now, Chavez shares their parking with Kohl's, an oriental store, and McD's, what do you expect?! Be patient, there's plenty of carne asada inside.
we only go for the taqueria but i'm sure the market is nice too.
the taqueria is SO GOOD and really cheap too considering how much good they give you. Try their shredded pollo (chicken) its delicious in anything tacos, burritos, flautas whatever its good!
update 7/31/07 i went to actually do some shopping and OMG this place puts safeway and albertsons to SHAME! It's the cleanest place. The product is stacked neatly i feel like if i touch it i'm ruining it because it's so neat. This place is awesome.

UPDATE!!!
BOYCOTT THIS MARKET!!!!
They have raised the prices and scaled down the size of their food items. Ridiculous. The carne asada was dry and tasteless. Super Taqueria is much better and by far cheaper.
Don't waste your hard-earned $$$. Try another taqueria...there's a ton of them all of the bay area.
What's not to love about a taqueria inside of a grocery store??!!
The store is so well kept. The employees are friendly and Mexican-American. The keep the flavor of their ethnicity, but manage to make this a place for everyone. Prices are in line with most markets. I too love the meat case. I like the time of yester-year when you can literally pick out your cut of meat. Fajitas de pollo and arrecherra preparada are my favorites.
It is a delight to grab some food from the taqueria and sit amongst the shoppers and people watch. Why the security guard is looming over everyone is weird, but considering where the location is it might be a bit of a deterrant.
Like everyone before has said--this place is remarkably clean. Especially compared to the surrounding stores and parking area. This is a must-try in East San Jo.
My place to go for quesidillas. A taqueria that takes cards, yay! This place is super clean and everything is made right in front of you so you know exactly what's going in your food. Also I love places that serve Arizona teas!!

Small but nice and clean market. I especially loved the music selection... wish Safeway would take some pointers from Chavez. The meat dept. was very clean as well, and from what I saw the majority of the meat was Harris Ranch. The produce is extremely cheap. 5 lemons for $0.99. That's like $5s worth of lemons at your regular grocery store. All of the produce looked very fresh.
The little restaurant they have here is pretty good too. I like their pastor style pork... They have a simple menu... just the way I like it.

This is probably one of the nicest Hispanic markets I have been to... it is definitely larger than most.. they have a large selection of meat and vegetables and pretty good prices. They also have a decent size taqueria where you can get some pretty grub..
I especially like going to the meat department and getting some chicharrone con carne.. think of it as pork rinds with some meat still on it..
Delicious!!
My favorite food store! Love the fresh bread and tortilla's! Store is exceptionally clean. My favorite thing about the store is the meat section - you can actually get just one chicken breast if you want it - nothing is pre-packaged. The restaurant is great too - love the carne asada tacos...yummmm!
Dont get me wrong. i really think that the food here is great, the al pastor super burrito is awesome. But 7.50 for a burrito that is alot smaller than anything from super taqueria is bad. The food is good but the price is awful.
the butchers are really willing to make sure that you're being helped unlike the butchers at ranch 99.
i also like listening to the mariachi music. it beats listening to 90's covers at seafood city.
even the people shopping there are nice. i wanted to bust out with my two years of high school spanish even though the workers spoke english well...maybe it's the mariachi music?
suprisingly (or not suprisingly), there's a security guard that just stands around. homeboy was hella close that he owed me a dinner at the taqueria.
the taqueria was dandy for the butcher to go to for some cooked carnitas.
yeah, catch my filipino ass shopping there just because i like ambience
